I found it ironic that there were screen savers with stationary graphics. They were the very problem that they were supposed to prevent.

That was After Dark by Berkeley Systems. It was originally developed for the Mac and then eventually released for Windows.

I kept using old DOS screensavers up until Windows XP. Either Razzle Dazzle or FireDots usually.

I remember the aquarium one! Once my mom started using our computer more, the desktop immediately filled up with icons—there was no room left. She’d have various spam search bars installed, and my favorite: those crazy, loud 3D screensavers.

We had speakers with a subwoofer back then, and I woke up one night to a MIDI tune blaring at 100% volume. I walked out in a daze to find flowers dancing on the screen while the bass was just thumping away in the dark. It seriously scared the shit out of me! The good ol' days lol.

I ran that back in windows 2000 I believe.

Now i use asciiquarium.

It will run directly from the command line, but i do run wayland or xorg on all my machines these days, even my home server.
