Doomerism is addicting and contagious. Volunteer at a hospital to feel the actuality of humanity. Or just listen to nature and people in a park
romulusnr@reddit
Sure, go to the hospital, see people die from not being vaxxed because of policits, from being shot or stabbed in a mugging or gang war, see the druggies in withdrawal trying to chew their restrains off, fight and injure the caretakers, shit all over the walls, see the patients panicking about their bills, or who didn't come until they were near irreversible due to medical bill and insurance undercoverage fears....
My wife works at a hospital and used to be an EMT. It quite definitely is not for anyone who wants to see the good side of humanity. I don't for a moment believe you've done that either.
wildey@reddit
I didn’t say you’d only see the good side, I said you’d see the actuality of humanity. And yes I have. I guess You’re a lost cause then, I only hope you don’t spread your misery to others

Going to a hospital to see humanity might be the worst advice ive ever seen on reddit
pocketgravel@reddit
I see it like the sacking of Rome. It had never ever happened in living memory. Not since the founding of the empire. And it marked the beginning of the end.
Although in this case I don't think it's because the US intelligence services were too incompetent to stop it... It was a war flag, or however you say that term... An excuse for the MIC to get fed millions of bodies for a few decades.
bremsspuren@reddit
That's the main reason, tbh. You have to remember that some of the biggest heroes/villains of the Cold War were defectors and moles. The lack of communication between intelligence services was a security feature, not a bug.

itchylol742@reddit
I think it all started in 1929. The Great Depression went on forever, with some breaks in between
I_Fuck_Traps_77@reddit
Nah, the US recovery from it was nothing short of miraculous and the postwar economy was a golden age more or less, it's only after Reagan that shit started going downhill and the shifting of both parties farther right over time (arguably the biggest contributor to the enshittification imo)
14mmwrench@reddit
Farther right? In which spectrum?
Authoritarian? Sure
Economically? No. Todays Republicans would be called communists by 1980s Democrats.
SilliusS0ddus@reddit
in what way are current day republicans further left economically than 80s Democrats ?
14mmwrench@reddit
Bush bucks, trump bucks, social welfare that doubles as corporate welfare, bailouts of big companies, buying stakes in companies, abuse of defence acts to compel companies to produce things they don't want to. Quantitative easing, deficit spending.
SilliusS0ddus@reddit
Do you count corporate welfare and bailouts as economically left ?
I get that it's state interference in the economy but it's not really a left wing policy
14mmwrench@reddit
Taking measures to control of the means of production isn't a left wing policy?
Quolley@reddit
Nope. Workers owning the means of production would be a left wing policy.
14mmwrench@reddit
So free market capitalism with no government interference is lefty now?
SilliusS0ddus@reddit
If the people who work at a company own that company and decide what to do through a democratic process then yes.
it is technically possible to have both socialism AND a free market
Quolley@reddit
That's not what I said at all
I_Fuck_Traps_77@reddit
Yeah both have gotten far more comfortable with authoritarian tendencies (expressed in different ways) but I'd say the social and economic shifts are just as big.
Socially, republicans were more centrist with iirc a lot of support for desegregation, and democrats had a hard split between liberals and dixiecrats. Both would be hated today by the loud sections of each party, the "I'm not racist but..." republicans and performatively woke democrats.
Economically, republicans back then were centrist, arguably centre left at certain points, and democrats were outright socdems with a demsoc fringe.
itchylol742@reddit
Actually I didn't go far enough. It all started in 1880

Derbloingles@reddit
It’s not that miraculous that a country that still maintained a lot of wealth and resources even at its lowest point was able to bounce back
I_Fuck_Traps_77@reddit
The miraculous part is moreso the fact that the american middle class became a clear majority and had a ton more economic freedom than before or since.
Derbloingles@reddit
I’d say that’s more because concessions were necessary to deter middle class Americans from the big scary socialism. Regardless of your political stance, society is better when the rich are scared
andooet@reddit
It wasn't post war. The recovery started with The New Deal, and the true decline started when Truman took over (he helped his buddy Churchill start the cold war with the USSR for real)
I_Fuck_Traps_77@reddit
Yes I know it started with the New Deal, but you're wrong on the rest. The post war boom made the middle class grow to over half of all Americans, it's not until Reagan and his consequences that you see huge declines and stagnation followed by accelerating decline
mooman555@reddit
It all started when Sargon of Akkad successfully conquered Sumeria as a whole

Idk man, the war on terror would have happened anyway, and there's no way that it could have gone so much better as to actually deliver a win. And the rise of internet was always going to create basically two parallel societies that no longer wished to intermingle, so what would it have changed in the grand scheme of things?
nomnomnomnomRABIES@reddit
Possibly under Cheney the 9/11 attacks would have been stopped
Quagtopia@reddit
We would have continued negotiations with Russia and everything going on Ukraine right now probably would not be happening if that were the case. Not to mention we would have continued our government surplus, with the US able to pay off all its debt in another decade or so.
GabagoolFarmer@reddit
Maybe the war on terror but idk if there would have been a prolonged war in Iraq if Bush / Cheney hadn’t been in power
the_capibarin@reddit
Iraq as a maybe, but Afghanistan is basically guaranteed to happen regardless, and also a guaranteed failure regardless, isn't it?
Dualityman@reddit
Ehh not necessarily the bush government nearly wiped out the taliban and al queda and set up a democratic government. The problem was during the formation of this new government the taliban were excluded from participating in helping to create it. Had they brought the taliban when they were at their weakest to the negotiating table there is a good possibility that a favorable peace could have been achieved. But the bush administration underestimated the taliban and thought them defeated so didn't need to include them. That and a shifting focus to iraq and pressure from Donald rumsfeld to use as few troops in resources in Afghanistan spelled disaster for a war that could have been eneded much sooner and on more peaceful terms.
SemicolonFetish@reddit
We wouldn't have gotten the PATRIOT Act without 9/11, and that is almost directly responsible for a lot of the shitshow today.

Nah mate, we got lucky trump is as incompetent snd stupid as he is. The real danger are the people that back him, and theyre not axactly going away any time soon
ReallyTeddyRoosevelt@reddit
As long as the Democrats don't go completely nuts (always a non-zero chance of that) they should easily take 2028. Pretty much all centrists and independent voters have abandoned Trumpism.
Trigger_Fox@reddit
The way Trump constantly ignores and wraps his way around rules i'd be genuinely fucking flabbergasted if he actually runs an election fairly. The only way you guys are getting out of Trumps nutty ride is by revolt i'm afraid
Marble05@reddit

I_am_lying_for_money@reddit
Democrats couldve easily won every election in the past 10 if the candidates focused on what matters: the economy. Yet the democratd refuse to do so because it would alienate their billionare backers. Even in 2028, any democrat would win, sure. But you put a fucker like Newsom or Harris up there and you will have trump #2 in a couple of years
DJDemyan@reddit
I’m terrified of Newsom tbh
fun_t1me@reddit
Same. He’s my governor and I really don’t want him to be the presidential candidate. I mean I’ll vote for him if I have to, but ugh, I really won’t like doing it.
ReallyTeddyRoosevelt@reddit
Ya I am scared of that. I am one of the few centrist Democrats on reddit who hate that the progressives have taken over the party. All we have to do is be like most other countries on immigration, not let repeat violent criminals back on the street 2 minutes after an arrest, and not call everyone who doesn't think penises belong in the womens locker room a bigot. I'm convinced if we did that the Republicans wouldn't be competetive for decades.
harebearr@reddit
you are literally just a conservative
ReallyTeddyRoosevelt@reddit
Ya the litmus tests of the left is a major reason nobody likes you. Only morons that treat progressivism as a religion believe in the 3 dozen different far left policies you guys think are clever by calling them human rights. JK Rowling only disagrees with the left on one issue and they think she is a fascist. That's not how you win elections. But I think you young progressives don't really care about elections and just want to circle jerk about how purely perfect your political beliefs are.
harebearr@reddit
no im saying that any of these positions are historically conservative and on the global scale, is right wing. “centrist democrat” is a nothing burger because the democratic party as a whole is already center right. the fact that you try to equate a political stance with religious fervor already says a lot. and no i dont identify as a progressive, and to lump any left sentiment into just one umbrella shows u have no understanding of leftism
ironiccapslock@reddit
Conserving what?
I_am_lying_for_money@reddit
Past immigration policies, tough in crime policies, current perspectives of gender
I_am_lying_for_money@reddit
Most democrats are for all of that, yet theyre losing to the progressive guys. This is just a pile of identity politics, and the obssesion with it is the readon Clinton, Harris, and tons of other democrats have become nothing more than unpopular losers.
UglyInThMorning@reddit
Literally all it would take is not being stupid about guns. They keep pushing bans on stuff that are commonly owned but not used in most crime and it just pisses off a ton of swing voters.

Trump is just the symptom of a disease, it won't end after he leaves...
Fayraz8729@reddit
I don’t doubt we’ll survive a presidency, but the trajectory isn’t looking good chief. If it’s just a constant tug of war between the impotent and the deranged that make up our two party system as the rich continue to circumvent the legitimacy the people’s vote would have using lobbyists the divide between what the people’s desires are and our government’s actions will grow wider and wider until the thing snaps. We either need true representative leadership or something to return to civility, because the feeling of the state not being for the people is now hanging on us like a miasma
ReallyTeddyRoosevelt@reddit
Has there ever been a time the American government wasn't run by the elites? This has been going on since our founding. Well minus 10-15 years for the two party system but it still has lasted for a really long time. The exact argument you make would have fit in the Gilded Age too. We survived and thrived.
Fayraz8729@reddit
Yeah we had a true battle between the unions and the private police of the pinkertons and the army before Roosevelt introduced a socialist reform package in the “new deal”. I’d prefer we avoid a small battle of the people against the government and capitalists and just get the new deal but at this point I think the former like the battle of Blair mountain is needed for the latter
wavs101@reddit
It 100% is.
History doesnt repeat, but it sure does rhyme.
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
The country already crumbled. The liberals are trying to convince us that we can still avoid an oncoming collapse, but realistically we've been in the transition-late stage of American society since at latest the 80s
ReallyTeddyRoosevelt@reddit
lol, this is silly. Crumbling countries don't have tens of millions of people risking their lives to immigrate.
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
Yes, they do. That is the situation we're in. To be fair, due to unprecedented globalization (which is to say interdependence), we're after the point of one country collapsing at a time; the whole world is on the precipice. But we're in a situation where people are risking their lives to escape underdeveloped globalized states to more developed globalized states where they will have the lowest quality of life among the proletariat. Out of the frying pan.

How is making jihadist states crumble a succes for the jihadists? You guys don't make sense at all.
noor1717@reddit
Jihadists can’t fight the biggest military ever head on. Everyone including themselves know that. Their strategy is to suck them into conflicts that slowly bankrupt them and degrade their own society so that it falls apart from within. It’s a centuries old strategy
Ionisation1934@reddit
"Their strategy is to suck them into conflicts that slowly bankrupt them"
Yeah, conflicts against them? Lol
noor1717@reddit
Jesus I can’t tell if you’re trolling or just that ignorant.
Americas economy was stronger and more evenly distributed before 9/11. Just cause there’s some huge corporations that make the economy look strong on paper does reflect the actual people.
Now it’s in an insane amount of debt. Their wealth is so unequally distributed. And because of this problems like inflation and inequality are tearing it apart from the inside.
This is exactly how multiple empires slowly collapsed.
Ionisation1934@reddit
Inequality had already been rising sharply since the late 1970s, accelerating through the 1990s under both parties. Measures like the Gini coefficient and top 1% income share show that by 2000, inequality was already close to modern levels. So 9/11 is not a meaningful turning point for distribution; the trend predates it by decades.
What matters is not the absolute size but sustainability—things like debt-to-GDP ratio, interest burden, and the country’s ability to service it. The U.S. borrows in its own currency, has deep capital markets, and maintains high global demand for Treasury bonds. That puts it in a very different position from countries that actually collapse under debt pressure.
Recent inflation spikes were largely driven by pandemic disruptions, supply chains, and monetary policy—not inequality per se. Inequality can contribute to social tension and long-term instability, but it doesn’t mechanically “tear apart” an economy in the short term.
High inequality or debt alone has never been sufficient to cause collapse in a large, diversified modern economy.
U.S. GDP per capita, productivity, and real consumption have continued to grow over time.
noor1717@reddit
If you don’t think the war on terror and then Iraq afterwords didn’t help spark this insane debt your delusional.
Yes of course there are other factors, like in every other empire in history. But the strategy is the same. Get the empire to overextend itself to slowly weaken it and America did that after 9/11 with Afghanistan and Iraq.
And you’re right with the currency. But now that Iran is basically running a similar asymmetrical strategy against the states it’s putting the Petrodollar at risk and is another signal at them losing power. And the kind of inflation that will come in the coming decade will cause tons of disruption in the states.
America will collapse like uk. Slowly dwindle their power away with inner turmoil. We are already moving towards a multipolar world and 9/11 will be ever looked at by historians as a major turning point.
uncle_rooch@reddit
Jihadist states come and go but civilizations like Persia have persisted for thousands of years and there’s nothing America can do about it. America meanwhile can barely go 250 years without blaming others for their own crumbling society and ruining their global reputation in the process. The days where you can just spend more militarily and rape a country are basically over, and everyone else has realized, but the US will try again anyway.

If you need counterfactuals:
-There is a timeline where Billy Waugh got into bin Laden's compound (in a black face mask and Adidas track suit) in Kharthoum, beat him to death with a lead pipe, and dumped the body over the wall of the Iranian embassy. The plan was literally on Clinton's desk.
-There is another timeline where the Saudi royal family OK'd bin Laden's suicidal plan to take on the Houthi's on horseback. [People forget that the Houthis were initially backed by the Soviets.]

It “expired” in 2020 but it was all just integrated into new legislation like the Freedom Act. All that infrastructure is definitely still in use
Neomataza@reddit
Remember that there used to be no TSA? You just got on the plane and no underpaid security dude was trying to figure out whether or not nail clippers could kill people if used by a martial artist.
BanzaiKen@reddit
Ish. Obama changed much of it to the Freedom Act in 2015 which restored some privacies like phone and Internet companies own your data rather than the government. The original act expired in 2020. The main change is the government no longer had access to your data, so it couldnt wiretap your communications devices because you said mean words on the Internet.
lost_user_account@reddit
Interesting. But they can still access the data through a warrant though?
BanzaiKen@reddit
Yes but that warrant opens up everyone involved to legal responses so there's CYA involved. Previously the government could actively wiretap and No Fly List people it didnt like.
Pommeswerfer@reddit
Doesn't the same happen now via sanctioning? Eg denying someone the use of internet services/credit cards/any online account. I recall something like that happening not too long ago with a french diplomat.
BanzaiKen@reddit
The US government can do whatever it wants to other countries either as a private conflict that has to have parameters or the very rare declaration of war from Congress that swaps the entire country into total war mode. US privacy protections are only granted to US citizens and the Patriot vs Freedom Act primarily dealt with the overreaches against US citizens. Foreign citizens are open season. That's why there's so much concern over the CIA, they cannot harm US citizens without a public trial like all government entities yet they shipped citizens off to black sites under the Patriot Act.
airfryerfuntime@reddit
Technically we aren't. Most of the patriot act expired in 2020 and wasn't renewed by congress. A lot of the spying and stuff the government is doing against American citizens is now illegal because it isn't backed by the powers awarded by the patriot act, but no one seems to give a shit.

_Empty-R_@reddit

BanzaiKen@reddit
I dislike him because I cant stand neocons similar to how neocons dislike Carter but I have to be honest that the guy cut malaria deaths in half in the entire continent and forged AFRICOM. That's the same asspull Carter did with diseases and foriegn policy in central Latin America, and one of the reasons Mexico and Panama bark alot but never bite. If Obama didn't gargle NATO's worthless balls and ignore AFRICOM then ISIS wouldve been pushed out of Africa competently and US companies would be sitting on all of those rare earth dig sites instead of Chinese ones. Instead China is going hard in the resultant battery tech and shitting out drones and robots for consumer use left and right. Just the goodwill from the malaria and AIDS programs and the fact that Bush utterly dominated the African educational systems continent wide couldve twisted the entire continent into participation in a US led alliance. Instead Obama and Clinton whacked Gaddaffi, crushed the entire pan African movement and China came in for sloppy seconds and never left while blaming everything that goes wrong on Obama and Clinton's dumbass policies.
_Empty-R_@reddit
yeah obama was just a flat mistake as far as I'm concerned. but hurdydurdy it made peephole happy. 'change'. yeah man. not good change. I will never accuse Bush of being a good president, but people really need to take steps back and at least understand him. People need to also step back and hate Cheney wayyyy more than they already do.
Anything that allows even the slightest Chinese win is a net negative in my book. Oh the choices that could have been made.

100%, 9/11 was the result of Americans foreign policy from previous decades. We would have ended up in our current situation without 9/11, because 7/11 would have happened or 6/7 or 4/20. 9/11 was a catalyst to an already saturated mixture.

It will all be alright. With two Trump administrations the US public learnt a lot of lessons that will bolster the will of the United States. Donald Trump is gonna take the blame, rest of the US govt will be in the clear, times will change, wages and purchasing power will go up again, US Institutions will be trusted again. There will be a better America. Just like how 9/11 made the US Military change to also be able to fight insurgencies. Hear me out, yes, it was a tragedy, but the fact it only took just over 3,000 lives to absolutely change society, flood it with fear, more monitoring, more restrictions, less trust, increased racism and violence, strict security, and justification for overreaching laws, is nothing short of incredible efficiency in the realm of human cost.
Covid killed millions… hundreds of times more than 9/11 and many Americans just laughed at it. School shootings have killed more. Funny that when it’s brown people killing Americans, you’ll fight back, but not when it’s an edgy teenager with an AR-15 or simply putting on a fucking mask.
undreamedgore@reddit
I've said it before and I'll say it again. If America falls, we must take the world with us. It's our only hope of ever rising again.

That and millions of dead innocents.

Was it really the mastermind of Osama who calculated reaction to the 9/11? Or was it just a coincidence, or some group of people did terract?

Terrorists can attack freedom, but it takes the government to actually destroy it
YoungDiscord@reddit
They didn't even need to do that
All they had to do is to sit back and wait for it to happen
Jeff bezos doesn't exist because of 9/11
Elin musk doesn't exist because of 9/11
Trump is not president because of 9/11
epstein's island didn't exist because of 9/11

Literally the explicit stated goal of Osama bin Laden
AggressiveDot9403@reddit
He said that in 04 after Al-Qaeda camps were getting razed left and right. Not to defend American foreign policy too much, because it's often quite dumb. But his early writings and 02 letter to America made clear he wanted a Caliphate and thought Americans had it coming for being a nation of infidels, who pop pills, and rallied around Bill Clinton after his sexacapes.
Lv_InSaNe_vL@reddit
Bin Ladens reasons and beliefs for his terrorist attacks before and after 9/11 were constantly changing. Believe it or not a terrorist isn't a bastion of rational thought haha
AggressiveDot9403@reddit
I don't think this is really true, in the 90s and up to the mid 2000s he gave the same set of reasons. US troops being on Saudi soil during gulf war, US support of Israel, and general American debauchery were always the reasons. These terrorists attacks was supposed to trigger a wave of Muslim uprisings that lead to a Caliphate.
Then all of a sudden when it turned out US military is quite good at turning them into Al-Qaeda into mincemeat he gave a bunch of reasons that actually it was all about drawing the US into a long war. It screams of cope no matter your thoughts on the wisdom of the wars.
Much of their thought while evil I don't think should be dismissed as irrational. Random fact I find amusing is that engineers were massively overrepresented in Al-Qaeda and while evil thought I think if you were raised with a certain set of mores makes perfect logical sense.

Yes. It was 9/11. Not billionaires acting like robber barons.
Yes, the sand people did it. Go bomb them champ.

lol. lmao even.

I'd argue the lax stance on the south post-civil war probably had a bigger impact than 9/11.

PATRIOT Act, not to mention the GWOT burning trillions of dollars to accomplish nothing but enriching a few people

No, through trillions of dollars spent and thousands of lives lost we managed to replace the Taliban with the Taliban.

It's a lot to unpack but tldr. We gave up our civil libraries for "security," spent our international reputation for negative returns, drained our wealth, divided the country in ways that have only gotten worse since then, and made it so no one trusts the government or the media anymore.
Oh_yes_I_did@reddit
America meddling in the Middle East trying to set up puppet states and plant some form of influences. Ends up creating a lot of enemies in the ME, one of which organized the 9/11 attacks. America then started the arbitrary war on “terror” selling it as security since it was proven we can be attacked. This security was in the form of the department of homeland security and the patriot act, which allowed for digital backdoors the government can access on anybody’s personal devices. This war on terror also divided America culturally and politically with some people supporting the war seeing it as spreading liberty and freedom to developing nations, or seeing it as necessary believing that the enemy will never stop trying to hurt America. And the other group condemning America for acting as some “world police” by making the rules for this abstract war on terrorism.

Kinda seems like a bit of a stretch considering that the berlin wall fell 2 years before the end of the ussr, meanwhile it's been a quarter century since 9/11.

I used to see 9/11 as a watershed moment but the US was already doing its two Middle Eastern wars-per-decade diet before that attack.
