FedEx MD-11, N523FE at JFK. According to FedEx, they hope to have these airborne this month, pending FAA approval

She has been connected to ground power for months ever since they last repositioned her.

Did Boeing redesign the pylon assembly to get them airworthy again?

Orbis’ MD-10 flew 2 days ago

The one I saw at IAH today looked like the wing engines were completely removed, might be related to inspection/potential fix.
fly_awayyy@reddit
100% related to it or getting it ready

FWIW, work at an A300 FDX ramp.
One of our line mechanics has about 12 years of experience working on MD-11s.
He's been getting flown around to a ton of different ramps over the last 2 weeks.
No official news yet, but based on how personnel are moving around, it's pretty clearly getting close.

I posted this one at EWR last week. It’s still sitting there.

These machines never cease to amaze me. I know, let’s slap an engine on the tail for good measure.

That will die when either engine 1 or 3 fall of their mounts.
Jaggedmallard26@reddit
It was a very specific failure mode of the MD-11 rather than trijets in general, the jet engines of modern airframes do not detach from their pylons like that to the point the only times it has never happened to an airliner airframe more modern than the MD-11! They've already solved engine placement and design to make the risk of debris ingestion if engine 1 or 3 has an uncontained failure effectively a non factor at the energy levels that wouldn't just take out the wing hydraulics and be unrecoverable anyway.
The actual downside of the trijet design is that 3 engines is more than 2 and thus cost more to operate, the same reason quadjets died out in the airline space.

It’s just a big APU /s

I haven’t been keeping up.
Have we heard any details about remediation steps and FAA being open to approval, or is FedEX just dreaming with getting them in the air this month?

Boeing released a new bearing. Internal memo from FedEx was reported on by WSJ a few days ago. Just waiting on final paperwork but I don’t think FAA is going to make some grand announcement. The Orbis MD-10 flew to SAT the other day.
International-Pie262@reddit
Yeah, that's what most people think, once an AD has been issued. That's when there's a fix; there will be a public announcement. I always have to address to people that the inspection and approval stuff are done privately. It's like when all Airbus 319-321's were issued an AD from the FAA a few months ago. Was there an announcement of it being dropped? No, because once the fix has been done and inspected privately. I can fly again.

What have all the pilots done in the meantime? Did they quickly get moved to something else?

Recurring training in the sims
SirPoblington@reddit
Don't they keep falling out of the sky?
TigerIll6480@reddit
Not this shit again.
SirPoblington@reddit
Woah I was just curious, jeez
itstotesdennyyy@reddit
I miss seeing them every night at IND. Patiently awaiting their return.
Shodapop@reddit
Same, I work on the other side of the airport and once in a while they take off on 5L (23R) during the day
Catsloveairplanes@reddit (OP)
I hope I’m at work when this one finally gets to fly. I want to hear those CF6 engines roar to life.

The egg on the face of a certain Redditors is going to be glorious. Wonder if they’re in hospital.

Next I hope to see 10 Tanker and Orbis back in the air.
CT-1065@reddit
Orbis flew their MD-10 just the other day!
Far_Breakfast_5808@reddit
MD-10? Didn't they already retire theirs and donate it to Pima?
84Cressida@reddit
No. That was a DC-10
randomtask733@reddit
Amazing news, I did not know that.
XLB135@reddit
Whoa. I didn't realize these were still around. I just went through some childhood photos today and yesterday and digitized this one (cropped out my face). This was from 1992.
