Wikipedia should have ads
Lost-thinker@reddit
Unfortunately that's probably going to be a reality to keep it from shutting down.
Haha_LMAO69@reddit
It literally costs less than $20 a year for a .org domain. A homeless person could afford that.

lol - sparesomechange.org

It costs a lot more than that to maintain infrastructure to deal with web traffic on Wikipedia’s scale.

Nah, they spend so little of their donations on wikipedia
Laughing_Orange@reddit
The Wikimedia Foundation had $296,550,030 in net assets as stated in their 2024-2025 annual report. $72,028,717 of that being cash and cash equivalents. They're doing absolutely great financially.
If all income stopped today, and no cuts were made, they could operate for more than an entire year without borrowing any money.
StrongAdhesiveness86@reddit
Why they beg so much then?

The craziest idea here
sonicjesus@reddit
I wish they gave the choice to show ads in lieu of paying them directly. They'd probably make them small and tolerable.
Problem is, Wikipedia needs to be independent above all things, and that's impossible when you depend on ad revenue like Reddit does.
Gravy_Sommelier@reddit
How about Wikipedia with product placement? Just sneak shit like Alexander the Great was known for drinking upwards of 15 cans of Mountain Dew Baja Blast per day into articles for the right price.

"Hey, I know you're looking up the capital of Guantamala, but have you heard of Raid: Shadow Legends?

It can blow too.
