"Assuming they were at Glide speed" The attitude, path, stability issues, and lack of ability to exceed 1g at high attitude all suggest they were going distinctly slower than best glide.
in a car, with airbags and crumple zones and seatbelts and a crash structure designed to protect the occupants. 60 mph is survivable ^sometimes
in a plane that is designed to be a light as possible with NO consideration to crash survivability at all with regards to have zero airbags, zero crumple zones, zero crash cages and only lap belts, smashing it into a solid concrete wall at 60 mph, then falling 2 stories and living is a certifiable goddam miracle.
I know people in this sub are addicted to dramatics but the plane quite literally has a crumple zone. it's everything in front of you. "Crumple zones" are not magic, they are...lightweight materials that deform in a predictable way under pressure. And it is flat-out insulting to insinuate that aircraft manufacturers put zero consideration into crashworthiness.
I don't mean this disrespectfully, but are you familiar with how little protection there is in the front of a light aircraft? I agree in a modern car that might be survivable, but the likelihood of surviving a head-on collision with a building or wall in a light aircraft is very, very slim.
Having flown a decent variety of them, I don't think I'd have survived in any of them.
i mean it doesn't appear to catch fire (in this vid, i haven't seen others), but thats gotta be like 100 g's, if they survived they are likely critically injured
"The airplane's pilot and co-pilot were killed by the crash, the fire department said in a statement, while three passengers were rescued in serious condition and taken to the hospital. It initially reported that four people were on board"
Correct. B737-800. Only two survivors were the flight attendants in the tail of the plane who were seated backwards. The tail separated and they were extracted, I believe one was still conscious.
This one will always stick with me for some reason.
My joy when I moved to Canada, then the USA, and hanging things became a matter of buying a 3M claw thing and done.
EVERY SINGLE TIME I went to drill something in my apartment in Brazil it would be a structural member that my drill wouldn’t get through (obvious reasons)
The difference between an impact driver and a hammer drill is the impact driver hits sideways to add more torque while the hammer drill hits along the drill bit axis to help breakup the material.
No worries! I have drilled many holes in concrete blocks with drills and impact drivers. I finally bought a used hammer drill last year. I haven't needed to drill a hole in cement or concrete since.

The alternative is stalling the plane and spinning it into the ground. This is usually 100% fatal. Surprisingly more fatal than flying straight into trees or a sturdy reinforced concrete building.
I'm so tired of these comments that try to find something special or heroic in crashes where the video just shows... a crash. What motivates people to post them?
People cope in many ways. Finding a silver lining in a tragedy is one way. Especially if you are a frequent passenger in these types of planes or a pilot.
Since for some reason some of you all started talking american politics in this thread, weve turned the fastened seatbelts flair on. Your comments may be removed if you dont reach the karma threshold. Please be respectful.
Found another angle and although it's hard to say for sure, it does seem like they made the left turn you see in the video to avoid other buildings and was unable to make the right turn in time to try to line up with the road.

kunderthunt@reddit
The news article says two passengers survived that can’t possibly be true can it?
Abject-Unit-5352@reddit
There's already a video circulating of a relatively intact and conscious survivor. It's truly unbelievable that someone could have survived.
EvenMoreCoconuts@reddit
Imagine the g-force from decelerating. Holy wow.
Easy-Trouble7885@reddit
Assuming they were at Glide speed, that wasn't too bad, however the fall after the hit would be worse imo
r80rambler@reddit
"Assuming they were at Glide speed" The attitude, path, stability issues, and lack of ability to exceed 1g at high attitude all suggest they were going distinctly slower than best glide.
Easy-Trouble7885@reddit
"All suggest" well you are also assuming all those things. Based on video evidence alone :)
Gingievitus@reddit
Ever stop dead as you crash into a literal concrete wall at 60+mph?
Easy-Trouble7885@reddit
60mph front impact is survivable, of course with some injuries. I'm not making light of the situation however it could've been worse
Thebraincellisorange@reddit

Easy-Trouble7885@reddit
Yes i have. Bottom line is that was the worst possible area for an engine failure. No options over a city
zevonyumaxray@reddit
Saw a photo from above. You can't see it in this video, but the plane only dropped about two stories, ten meters or so, down to a parkade level.
Easy-Trouble7885@reddit
Ah ok I didn't know it was that low after they hit
NorthEndD@reddit
Might be someone really lightweight.

i mean it doesn't appear to catch fire (in this vid, i haven't seen others), but thats gotta be like 100 g's, if they survived they are likely critically injured
myurr@reddit
That's the primary impact. They then fell downwards four stories!
peteroh9@reddit
Maybe they flew through the windshield and landed on the couch?
Worshipme988@reddit
Depending on speed its basically a car crash. The front absorbs a ton of energy. This plane is not a 747 speeds can be surprisingly low.
Admirable-Apricot137@reddit
It doesn't look like it caught on fire, so that increases survivability by a lot.
Playful_Assistance89@reddit
"You didn't fire roast the tomatoes in this salsa?" matters not to the tomato, who is still salsa.

ElSedated@reddit
Two of the passengers survived but are in critical condition. A third passenger was taken to the hospital but died early this evening.
GayRacoon69@reddit
I mean if they're in the back they got a decent crumple zone
They hit straight on. I could see the front of the plane ~~and the pilots~~ absorbing most of the impact
Gremlin0@reddit
Well, that’s inconvenient.
JeffreyDollarz@reddit
How many dead?
Ph6222@reddit (OP)
2 dead and one survivor
steelmanfallacy@reddit
How? That's an insanely hard crash. Not sure a harder one is possible.

Thurak0@reddit

GrynaiTaip@reddit
Different materials require different drill bits.
C5-O@reddit
If you're drilling into concrete you might also need an impact drill, and it'll be a bit harder, but it's really not difficult.
The one thing I'm jealous of NA for is the relative ease of adding wiring and switches in hollow walls, that shit is just worse in concrete walls.
chicken2007@reddit
Hammer drills make it even easier.
The difference between an impact driver and a hammer drill is the impact driver hits sideways to add more torque while the hammer drill hits along the drill bit axis to help breakup the material.

Oh yeah that's what I meant, kinda just guessed the english word for it.
