GenX-plaining

God help me, I just coined a new phrase. To "GenX-plain" is to explain how technology and techno-enabled social interactions are "optional." Seriousness to sarcasm is discretionary to the user, audience, and situation.
Something happy happened today to a friend. So, naturally they (also GenX) blew up the phone text-group with their awesome news and the back chatter that followed.
To this one of our number angrily retorted with a few expletives and the news that in their time zone, they were having dinner.
What followed was a complete breakdown of how they are entitled to mute their phone, leave it in another room, join the conversation, or casually take off. When they balked at the pushback, I shot off that I would "be happy to GenX-plain the concepts of using a phone's various muting abilities and/or humanity's collective lack of psychic ability to know they did not want to be disturbed at that exact moment".
I feel that naming a thing is a powerful act. And that with this new found label we should all take caution that this activity is never seen in the same light as "man-splaining". But rather the unassailable truth that social fiat is an optional state of affairs.
With great power comes great sarcasm my friends. Use yours wisely!

Never heard of anyone complaining about getting texts unless they were boomers
Analogsilver@reddit
Boomers is no longer a term for a specific age range, but a personality failure. There are plenty of Gen-Xer's who are boomers. The funniest boomers are the one's in their 20s who don't see it in themselves yet.
doctor_machinegun@reddit
wow. how said is your life that as soon as this happened you thought; “i must declare this to all of my reddit friends!”
vinegar@reddit
Almost as sad as you waiting for the opportunity to unload that. wow.
doctor_machinegun@reddit
hahahahaha 😂 nothing is as bad at thinking “genX-plaining” is new or worth telling the internet about
theghostofcslewis@reddit
I promise that I read that twice. I have never allowed someone to put me in a group chat (Oh, they have tried), so the effect was completely lost on me.
Raumarik@reddit
I allow it then mute the group. If it's important they'll tell me next time I see them, or call me direct.
kam49ers4ever@reddit
I love it. I have repeatedly had to explain that no, I don’t feel the NEED to answer my phone just because it rang, or look at every text immediately, or even respond.
Koolmidx@reddit
My friend coined "Autofucktification" to describe many things like self destructive behavior, putting your foot in your mouth, or whatever you do to mess up your own day.
Autofucktify, and autofucktified also apply.
doctor_machinegun@reddit
how fuckingstupidfied
Ray_The_Engineer@reddit
I like the term, lol. With the example given..honestly, I HATE group text chats. I make apologies and remove myself from them, unless I have an explicit reason for being there. It's not "having my dinner interrupted", it's "having my dinner interrupted by a guy at 222-333-4444 in a group of 60 people that I got drafted into without my permission."
Available-Bison-9222@reddit
All my alerts are on mute. It saves me from unsolicited group messages at inconvenient times.
tango421@reddit
My phone is on permanent mute.
No-Lime-2863@reddit
my phone is on permanent mute as well. I was surprised to learn from my terminally online kid, that that is standard, and all kids these days have it permanently muted.
Ray_The_Engineer@reddit
I'm beyond even that, I think. I'm also muted, but for years I've lived in the Microsoft Teams/Outlook work world, and was bombarded with 75 new messages every time I'd glance at my phone, 90% of which were worthless. Now I'm shellshocked and ready for some peace and quiet lol.

Those X's with chronic sticks-up-their-ass-iness are re-catagorized as "boomer lite"

Let me GenX-plain: quit bellyaching, turn off notifications and enjoy your stupid dinner

Explaining anything requires that you care.
Whatever.
joeykey@reddit
I think the only group chats I’m on are with other Gen X
bazaarjunk@reddit
And here I thought GenX/planning was to explain to other gens that we exist and we’re here and it doesn’t just go: Silent Gen Boomers Millennials GenZ GenAlpha
Flababulous@reddit
FacePunchMonday@reddit
You put me on a group text and its getting muted immediately and we probably wont interacting with each other after that.
MajesticPickle3021@reddit
I (53 yr old Gen X Male, He/Him) don’t really freaking care. I look at my phone once in a while when I don’t have something better to do. If I don’t answer a text right away, most people who know me, are just like “well that makes sense “. The only social media I do is Reddit, because it doesn’t feel like social media most of the time. Life’s too short. Live it in real time.

Thank you for this textbook example of GenX-plaining!

Sorry, it's already been taken: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Gen-Xplain
petaline555@reddit
So they wanted to pull us into the generations war.
The best thing is that last line. They forgot GenX don't care.

I'm enjoying your new turn of phrase. Fits well, and also rolls off the tongue well. Kudos!
Isn't it funny how some people assume an obligation to participate simply because someone else made their phone put out a notification? It's optional, people!
Your friend probably gets mad at the sun when it rises before he's ready to get out of bed.

Can you don't? Kkthx

I frequently have to tell loved ones they do not have to apologize or explain why they were not available when I randomly call them. I am just calling to chat, if it was important I would leave a message and text.

I like it. Will promulgate this term to the best of my abilities :-)
EnjoyingTheRide-0606@reddit
It bugs me when people say dumb things in texts. I had a friend who regularly left their iPhone at home where it wouldn’t risk being stolen or dropped. (Wait, what?) Then when he didn’t get your text within a short time of it being sent, he replied, “I just now read your text” but never answered my question!!
ggibby@reddit
Whatever.
Guilty_Eggplant_3529@reddit
Gold star for you. My non-typical boomer parents and myself agree completely. Just because you have the means/ability to be connected constantly, in no way means that is expected of you. Moderation in everything.
