GenX-plaining

God help me, I just coined a new phrase. To "GenX-plain" is to explain how technology and techno-enabled social interactions are "optional." Seriousness to sarcasm is discretionary to the user, audience, and situation.

Something happy happened today to a friend. So, naturally they (also GenX) blew up the phone text-group with their awesome news and the back chatter that followed.

To this one of our number angrily retorted with a few expletives and the news that in their time zone, they were having dinner.

What followed was a complete breakdown of how they are entitled to mute their phone, leave it in another room, join the conversation, or casually take off. When they balked at the pushback, I shot off that I would "be happy to GenX-plain the concepts of using a phone's various muting abilities and/or humanity's collective lack of psychic ability to know they did not want to be disturbed at that exact moment".

I feel that naming a thing is a powerful act. And that with this new found label we should all take caution that this activity is never seen in the same light as "man-splaining". But rather the unassailable truth that social fiat is an optional state of affairs.

With great power comes great sarcasm my friends. Use yours wisely!
