Shingles vaccine before 50? (young genx)
Posted by Darkwing873@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 131 comments
Has anyone taken the shingles vaccine before turning 50? Is there any reason why not to? My S.O. got shingles last summer on vacation and quickly had a virtual call with a dr who prescribed some anti virals. And my Mother in Law had singles a few years back, in a really bad way. It scared the crap out of me!
Starbreiz@reddit
I had shingles at 35 and it was awful. People in this sub encouraged me to ask if I could pay out of pocket for the vax, it's like $600. Our generation seems to be getting it earlier, so I wish insurance would cover it before 50.
ProfessionalField508@reddit
I got it about the same time. Insurance won't cover the vaccine for me, either, until I'm 55 (!).
Despises_the_dishes@reddit
I got shingles last summer after taking a month of steroids (prednisone).
I was miserable, it crossed the meridian and I had to take daily photos and send them to my doctor. I took the antiviral as soon as I google image searched the rash on my arm and called urgent care.
I was absolutely miserable for 2 solid weeks. It was all over my shoulder, down my arm, hand (palm, fingers) and across my back. All over my chest, I couldn’t wear a bra. And had to wear gloves in the house along with long sleeve shirts that were 3 sizes too big. You can’t have anything fitted against the skin or it’s super painful. It was over 100 that summer and I was sweating and had to be fully covered up.
The pain was unreal. Especially at the point of origin. I thought my arm was going to fall off. You can’t sleep because you are so uncomfortable. Soooo uncomfortable.
The pain is like a 1000 hot rubber bands all snapping at once. On your skin and in your muscles/nerves.
It’s highly contagious if you have oozing wounds that you can’t cover like hands/wrists/neck.
Anyway, get the vaccine!!!
Junior_Statement_262@reddit
I followed my doctors advice and got it around age 50.
keiths31@reddit
As others have said, just get it. My wife and I got ours last year. Didn't care that it was $200. That is something that I absolutely do not want to get.
Pleasant_Studio9690@reddit
I had no luck getting it before 50, but got it a few months after. I wanted to get it for the same reasons as you. I know several people who went through the wringer with Singles in their 40's or 40's and I wanted to avoid that. After the first shot, I felt terrible for about 3 days after.. Took a day off ahead of time and just spent a long weekend home chillin. Second shot I felt a little rough for 24 hours then bounced right back. If you can access it, I think you should.
Wildflower_76@reddit
you have to be 50 before they will give you the shingles vaccine?
NightGod@reddit
50 before insurance will cover it, under 50 if you're immunocompromised (or willing to lie and say you are) and are paying out of pocket
ConnotationalRacket@reddit
I got mine before age 50 and mine was covered by insurance. Just tell them you’re immunocompromised
Wildflower_76@reddit
Why isn't it free?
Despite recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) and advocacy for free access, the B.C. government has not included the shingles vaccine in its general public funding program, unlike several other Canadian provinces. [1]

Wildflower_76@reddit
ok I only have 3 months and 1 day left before I get it covered
anjacoeth@reddit
I tried to get it before 50 because I saw my husband and coworkers go through the pain of having shingles. I did not want that.
I could not get it because there was no reason that I needed it before 50.
PondoSinatra9Beltan6@reddit
i got the shingles vaccine early because I had chickenpox as a kid. Twice. The vaccine didn’t help. I still got shingles.
ConnotationalRacket@reddit
I got Shingrix early and it lessened the severity of the shingles I got last year. Do not delay, get the Shingrix asap
TheSwedishEagle@reddit
Shit. I also had chicken pox twice.
PondoSinatra9Beltan6@reddit
i thought i was the only one. It’s good to know there are others. I marine this must be what it feels like when you meet Charles Xavier and he takes you back to his school.
ConnotationalRacket@reddit
Just tell them you’re immunocompromised
Beth_Pleasant@reddit
In some cases, your insurance won't pay for it if you are under 50. I got it at 45 because I am on meds that are slightly immunosuppressant.
ConnotationalRacket@reddit
This is a good point, but my insurance covered mine no issues.
icedyoga@reddit
Had mine the month I turned 50 and the follow up on schedule. Scares me after a bad case of chicken pox at 19
and talking to those who’ve had it.
syzygialchaos@reddit
I had shingles immediately following chicken pox. I think I was 10-11. I’ve blocked the memory, but my mom tells me it was terrible
Darkwing873@reddit (OP)
sounds horribad
SeparateCzechs@reddit
My husband got Shingles at 32. From the back of his head to the corner of his eye. His Hair hurt. Twenty years later he still gets nerve pain on his scalp if the wind ruffles his hair. Also, our affectionate gesture of petting each others hair is no more. It hurts him if I stroke his hair😭
SeparateCzechs@reddit
Do it. You don’t want Shingles.
Also, get the shot without getting other vaccines at the same time. I got my second shingles vaccine with the flu vaccine and either pneumonia or Covid booster (can’t remember which) and I felt very sorry for myself for two days.
Otherwise_Object_446@reddit
I had ocular shingles when I was 43. It was miserable. But that made me eligible for the shingles vaccine once some time had passed (my doctor made me wait a year but that’s an outdated recommendation I believe). The vaccine gave me flu-like symptoms for a day but was nowhere near as bad as ocular shingles.
Novel-Vacation-4788@reddit
I paid out of pocket for it in my mid 40s.
tbodillia@reddit
"FDA-approved for adults 50 and older. However, it is also approved for adults 18+ who are or will be at increased risk of shingles due to immunodeficiency or immunosuppression."
Ghosthost2000@reddit
IME: You can get it early if you have a health condition that warrants it. Now getting insurance to pay for it (even if you have a qualifying condition) and getting a pharmacy to agree to administer said shot (even with doctors note/insurance agreement) can be the tricky part. It’s several hundred OOP if you forego insurance.
johnonymous1973@reddit
If you can get it, get it. I (and two friends) had face/head shingles during the earlier stages of the pandemic. I still have scars. Not good.
imzadi111@reddit
When my husband turned 50, his PCP encouraged him to wait until he was older. Currently, it is a 2-dose, once in a lifetime vaccine that lasts about 10 years. His doctor prefers to wait so there is vaccine coverage in the older years.
acatwithnoname@reddit
Why is it once in a lifetime if it only lasts 10 years? My mom got it well over 10 years ago and her doctor let her get it again recently. She's 76.
Roseliberry@reddit
His doctor is a dumbass
Independent-Pea5131@reddit
The set of 2 shots is designed to be one time, no need to wait to get older and currently there is no recommendation for a second set. Get it now! My insurance didn't cover it until I turned 50.
jayhawkwds@reddit
Same, insurance paid for it after age 50. Same with the Pneumococcal.
hardgrove1979@reddit
Partner got them at 43. I get the vaccine as I don’t want to suffer that fate if ai can prevent it.
Nicole_Bitchie@reddit
I had mine at a Kroger pharmacy in Colorado pre-50. It doesn’t hurt to ask the local pharmacy if you are eligible.
VintageFashion4Ever@reddit
I had shingles at 37 and despite have post-herpectic neuralgia for eight years, I still couldn't get the shot.
mjh8212@reddit
They haven’t mentioned it to me I’ve wanted to ask. I got the pneumonia shot that’s I think for life but I have health conditions that could make it bad for me. I’m 47 and my husband is 55. He didn’t get his vaccine and has had eye issues for three years turns out he has shingles in his eye. It’s only detectable when flared so his eye exams never caught it. When it flared the opthomologist his insurance suggested was 2 hours away and it might not be flaring when we got there. He went to mine in town when it flared last time and was diagnosed.
ConnotationalRacket@reddit
Yeah just tell the pharmacist that you are “immunocompromised” and you need to get it now. They will give you the series, don’t get any other vaccines within at least 2-3 weeks on either side.
If they ask (they won’t) just say you have an autoimmune condition and your rheumatologist told you to get it asap. Do not elaborate
Roseliberry@reddit
Thanks moms, chicken pox parties were the best! /s
ICanHasBirthday@reddit
If insurance covers it, GET IT! Shingles SUCKS.
HatesDuckTape@reddit
I tried to get it a few years ago. Insurance wouldn’t cover it under 50. I turn 50 next month and will get it soon afterwards.
My wife had shingles at around 40. Really nasty shit, and hers wasn’t anything particularly bad. A friend had it in his mid 30s. Same thing.
PurplePenguinCat@reddit
From research when I had shingles at 42, the younger you are when you get shingles the higher the risk of getting it again. Also, each time you get it, the worse the case will be.
Granted, I read all of that almost 7 years ago. Info may have changed since then.
CK_CoffeeCat@reddit
I think I’ve had it. Got three shots in one trip about a year ago. It was the only shot I’ve had to pay for in like a decade.
QueenRotidder@reddit
they don’t do all the shingles one at the same time, it’s 2 shots, 6+ weeks apart (I just got it done myself)
CK_CoffeeCat@reddit
Hunh. I must've got something else then. Weird.
Roseliberry@reddit
My insurance decreased the age limit recently. I did get the vaccine as soon as I could. One of my friends, her mother got shingles on the left side of her face and it traveled up the optic nerve into her brain. The mom lost her eye, the had to see the eyelid shut. She is gently befuddled now. Another friend also got shingles on the face but thankfully it didn’t hit the optic nerve, but still it was incredibly painful for her.
knintn@reddit
Insurance won’t cover it before 50. I turn 50 in 2 months and sign me up. My dad, grandmother and great grandmother all got shingles many times. I want it!
boybrian@reddit
If you are under 45 get the Gardasil 9 vax. After 45 they won't cover it.
FireLight4@reddit
Got mine at Kroger pharmacy at age 48. He asked if my doctor recommended it, I told him yes, insurance covered it. There were no other questions. I’m a cancer survivor and my brother had shingles at a young age…but the pharmacist only asked if my doctor recommended it. Done.
HelgaTwerpknot@reddit
I had shingles when I was 13. You can get it at any age.
Distinct_Magician713@reddit
Insurance is the reason.
Snarkymalarky80@reddit
To get the Shingle’s vax at 49, it would have to be prescribed off-label. It's not often done unless there is a preexisting condition that would warrant early vaccination.
akobie@reddit
Wife 48 and i 47 have both had shingles and could not get the vax. Begging and pleading and willing to pay cash. No go.
Snarkymalarky80@reddit
A lot of physicians won't prescribe before 50. When I’ve received orders for early immunization, but they were typically from specialists. I'm so sorry you've had to deal with shingles at such a young age.
akobie@reddit
Got it in my early 30s and terrified of getting it again. Wife got it on her face 2 years ago. Terrible. Will be so glad to get the vax!
NightGod@reddit
You can easily get it without a prescription, you're just very unlikely to have insurance cover it
Spickernell@reddit
i tried to get .vaccine 2 weeks before i turned 50 and they refused to give it to me. i had to return after i was 50
Crazy-Pound-8833@reddit
I went the day before and the pharmacist told me to come back the next day.
Spickernell@reddit
i have to admit, your situation was even more ridiculous than mine , so i feel better now. thank you!
Wildflower_76@reddit
I am currently 49 going on 50 this summer. I have had shingles twice I believe. I never went to the doctor, I just did home care until it went away.
When I get money I plan on getting the shingles vaccine
labboy70@reddit
I took the Shingrix vaccine when I was 48. My doctor suggested I get it because he had a few patients get shingles in their late 40s or early 50s.
I had no issues other than mild aches and a sore arm for about a day after getting the shot. Similar to other vaccines I’ve received.
TheRealFinatic13@reddit
I took the first shot, left foot went numb 3 days later. doctor called it peripheral neuropathy, and said dont get any more vax, that was a few weeks before covid shutdown. no shots since and outside the numb foot (pins and needles sensations right now!) ive been as healthy as can be.
iloveairportsushi@reddit
I got prescribed it earlier than 50 by a bit…49 because I’m on biologics. The drug company also paid for the vaccine
refuz04@reddit
Yes because I got shingles at 43
MrsNnz@reddit
I’m 42 and was just diagnosed with shingles :(
It’s the worst.
aGirlySloth@reddit
I unfortunately got shingles at 38 and got the vaccine. Dr just had to get my ins. approval. Just took a day for that, I was absolutely miserable and mine appeared on my face only. Have a scar in the middle of my forward because it too :-(
Capital-Meringue-164@reddit
Uggh that’s awful! I got a typical case on my torso on my 47th birthday, and it was absolute hell. Could not get vaccine until I turned 50 this year and I got it done in the months following my bday (2 shots separated by at least 6 weeks).
canoe_yawl@reddit
Related to this: get your titer tests to make sure you still have immunity to various diseases from earlier vaccines, and to see if you have immunity acquired from illness.
I had my family doctor do a titer test a while back before getting the shingles vaccine, only to find that I had no antibodies to chicken pox. Apparently I had never had a case of it, or my immune response to that exposure was no longer there, so instead I got the chicken pox vaccine ASAP. You apparently really don't want to get it as an adult.
heldaway@reddit
Did insurance cover the test? Thanks for suggesting it!
canoe_yawl@reddit
It's been a couple of years. From what I remember, it was entirely covered by my provincial public health care (I live in Canada). Sorry I don't have a more helpful answer.
heldaway@reddit
I appreciate it.
EverythingScrolling@reddit
Whoa. I didn't know that was a thing. I had chickenpox in 1st grade but was vaccinated against everything else (mumps, measles, rubella, tetanus, diptheria, etc).
I recently got a tetanus booster because it had been so long. Got my pneumonia vaccine last year. Got the first of two Hepatitis B vaccines a few weeks ago.
canoe_yawl@reddit
It's worth getting the titers done. Depending on when and where you got your measles vaccine, you may need or want a booster, especially if you're travelling to higher-risk areas. Your local health authority will likely have useful info.
Professional_Use8237@reddit
I’d been vaccinated for measles as part of the MMR series as a baby, but had a titer because of all.the.measles. I had no immunity left. I went right to the pharmacy for a booster. Not messing w measles, chicken pox or shingles if I can avoid it!
SnowflakeSWorker@reddit
I started my BSN in my 40s, and needed an update on EVERYTHING, except varicella, because I had chicken pox when I was a kid. I was a mess for about a week with all of the vaccinations before I started my clinicals.
ResoluteMuse@reddit
Yep. Get it
crossstitchbeotch@reddit
I got it in my 30s with a doctor’s prescription. I had to pay cash for it but it was worth it. I technically didn’t have any pre-existing conditions but both my dad and grandmother had terrible cases of shingles. I also have known a lot of friends get it in their 20s and 30s. I’m 48 now, no regrets.
newyork_newyork_@reddit
If you can afford it, get it.
Forest_of_Cheem@reddit
I was able to get it at 47 because I was starting biologic medication for ankylosing spondylitis. My insurance paid as long as I got it done at my primary care doctor’s office. Every insurance is different.
GnomieOk4136@reddit
I got it at 46 because I have several complicating diseases. You will need a note from your doctor.
butterflygardyn@reddit
I had the chicken pox as an adult and my doctor recommended that i get the shingles shot 10 years earlier than most people.
Sensitive_Note1139@reddit
Insurance companies won't cover shingles vaccines under a certain age. You have to call your insurance and find out when that age is. Some people are able to get it earlier if they meet preexisting conditions.
My husband got shingles before he was 50. I think he was 48? Insurance wouldn't cover my shots because of my age. I tried again when I turned 50 to get my shots. My insurance plan only covers them after 52.
YuNotWong@reddit
I wish I had gotten it before 50. Wasn't on my mind and I got shingles at 49. I know my doctor would have approved it if I had thought to ask
Ratatoskr_The_Wise@reddit
The shingles vaccine reduce reduces inflammation, and that can help make you look younger. For that reason alone, you should get it.

The insurance wouldn’t allow it. The pharmacy couldn’t even give me an out of pocket price. I had shingles at 48 and wanted the old vax (available at 60). The new one came out when I was 50 so I got it.
nesper@reddit
I asked pharmacist got similar response, wouldn’t be covered and it was pricy out of pocket.
FruitOfTheVineFruit@reddit
Lots of people saying you can get the shingles shot if you are immunocompromised, depending on the pharmacy. I know people who have gotten other vaccines they were eligible for because they were immunocompromised, and they just had to say they were immunocompromised and why. So, if you are immunocompromised, it may be easy.
paramedic236@reddit
I got it at age 46, had to check a box that I cared for a newborn.
Whatever 🤷🏼♂️
AnnOnnamis@reddit
I got the shingles vaccine at 52. No reason not to, even if you had chicken pox as a kid.
dwsdws@reddit
The people who have had chicken pox are the exact people the vaccine is for. You cannot get shingles UNLESS you have had chicken pox.
60PersonDanceCrew@reddit
My spouse literally got shingles, recovered, and the pharmacist refused to give the vaccine because they "weren't old enough" to have it. 🤦🏻♀️
EverythingScrolling@reddit
Is there a valid reason for the 50 or older requirement? Because it seems like arbitrary bullshit.
60PersonDanceCrew@reddit
My guess is that it's a combination of 50+ being a higher risk factor plus arbitrary insurance not wanting to pay outside of the typical risk group.
slylabninja@reddit
I asked my doc when I was 49 and he approved it on the spot. No underlying conditions.
Head_Trick_9932@reddit
They told me no, only at 50 and after lol? I wanted it but waited until 50 because they told me no.
I definitely got it because of my brothers awful case.
Remarkable_Chart7210@reddit
I tried to pay for it to get the vaccime early. Was told no for shingles and no for hpv. I am a male.
Head_Trick_9932@reddit
Yep, they told me no under 50 too so I had to wait. It’s BS when they won’t cover preventative.
MaligatorMom2@reddit
I am immune compromised and under 50. I was advised to get the vaccine ASAP. Neither Walgreens or Costco would give me the shot even though I meet guidelines and insurance covered it. My doc sent in a prescription to Walmart and I was able to get the shot.
Have had the first dose and other than a sore arm, I had no side effects. Fingers crossed the second is the same.
lagrandefille@reddit
If I were you, I’d get it. I hesitated in getting mine, and I’m suffering with postherpatic neuralgia, which is very painful and exhausting, and far worse than any discomfort from the shot I’m sure.
oldfarmjoy@reddit
Get it as soon as your doc will give it!!! Request it early.
jennifer_m13@reddit
My husband got shingles in his late 30s-early 40s. I keep reminding him he needs to get one. He’s 49
tinypill@reddit
Ugh I got turned away by both CVS and Walgreens because I’m 48. I think it’s so fucking stupid. Everyone I know who’s had shingles got it in their 30s or 40s. The 50 threshold makes no sense.
MidnightFederal3195@reddit
It is so stupid. Hey I wanna get something to prevent this horrible thing that can strike at any age. No no no. Wait until you’re 50.
Under 50 and not immunocompromised. My doctor wrote me a prescription and pharmacy gave me both jabs and insurance covered it.
tinypill@reddit
It’s ridiculous. I told them I’d pay out of pocket for it and they still refused.
Head_Trick_9932@reddit
Yep, I got told no too at 48. My brother got a very bad case, I got paranoid and tried and they wouldn’t give it to me
Due-Sandwich6026@reddit
Try a different pharmacy. I got the jab at 48 with no questions.
Honeybee71@reddit
I got shingles when I was 40
North_Artichoke_6721@reddit
I had a doctors appt today and asked about it. The doctor told me I have to be 50 if I don’t have any other health issues. (I’m 48.)
MidnightFederal3195@reddit
I’m in same boat but my primary listened to me and wrote me a prescription for the vaccine. Local grocery store pharmacy gave me the jabs. Insurance fully covered both doses even though I’m under 50 and don’t have any type of condition that would warrant an early shot.
GeneralJavaholic@reddit
My guess is they want you to get the most bang for the buck. Shingrix after 10 years showed about 74% efficacy. Most people who get shingles are in their 60s and 70s. Yes, I've known a guy in his 30s and one in his 40s, but they got drugs and were mild.
xTiredSoulx@reddit
My husband got it in early 40’s. I then caught Chicken Pox from him. Turned 50 this year, just got Shyngrix
EverythingScrolling@reddit
I'm 47 and would love to get the shingles vaccine, but my understanding was that you're not allowed if you're under 50, unless you're immunocompromised.
Can you self-pay and get it before 50?
My mom (75) is vaccinated and has had repeated shingles outbreaks. I really don't want that to be me.
MidnightFederal3195@reddit
I’m 48 and got it. I am not immunocompromised. Just had my primary write me a prescription (one for first dose and another for 2nd) and took it to the grocery store pharmacy. Insurance covered both in full.
Mejay11096@reddit
I got mine at 47 but I’m immune compromised so I don’t know if insurance would cover it. I imagine you can get it if you self pay though.
temerairevm@reddit
You can get it but it’s pretty expensive. I have a friend who paid a couple hundred bucks to get it at 45. Everyone in her family gets shingles. She felt it was worth it.
AliceLand@reddit
I was able to get the shingles shot before 50. I had shingles and know people who have had it numerous times. I basicly harassed my primary care doc until they gave it to me. I said I would pay out of pocket for it but the clinic ran it through insurance and insurance paid for it. 🤷🏼♀️
HandaZuke@reddit
I got mine at 47 but only because I had a cancer diagnosis
Djhumphreys@reddit
I got both shots last year. Shingles is nasty, the price for the shots was worth it. IMHO
pjhk75@reddit
I literally couldn’t book a vaccine appointment until after my 50th birthday, but I suppose if I was predisposed to it my doctor may have helped make an exception. It all seems so arbitrary to decide someone doesn’t need a vax until a certain age, so if you want it early, I hope you can get it!
Bamalouie@reddit
Maybe some places will but my best friend got shingles around 45 and can't get the vaccine until she's 50 despite having had it.
More_Law6245@reddit
Yes, I have had the vaccine and I'm in that lucky category of getting repeated outbreaks of Shingles (yeh me!), so for context I get 6-10 outbreaks a year so I got the vaccine but my Doctor had to get dispensation from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to use the drug because of my age because I was under 50 years old at the time. In my case I take antivirals along with the vaccine in order to manage my condition but you also need to be conscious of your liver and viral loading. Do I still get Shingles? Yes but my symptoms are not as severe or I don't experience as many outbreaks as I used to in the past.
You should be scared with very good reason but also should be educated about it because Shingles can be managed effectively. It's extremely painful for those who get it but you really need to understand that it can be very contagious in it being a virus and needs to be managed accordingly.
old_namewasnt_best@reddit
As others have said, due to insurance reasons, you can't get it until you're 50. Three weeks, baby, shingles vaccine here I come! (I lead a miserable existence.)
Guadaloopey@reddit
My sibling and parent have both had shingles multiple times. My sibling nearly lost their sight last time as the optic nerve was affected. Because of this I bullied my doctor into prescribing it before 50. I had to pay as insurance didn’t cover it. Totally worth the peace of mind.
Aromatic_Revolution4@reddit
I'm not sure insurance will cover the cost if you're under 50 but I imagine you could look into it/your doctor could write a Rx.
heynow941@reddit
You could try to schedule an appointment at CVS or Walgreens and see if it allows it without providing insurance info.
Select-Regret-9840@reddit
Unless you're immunocompromised, you usually won't get a shingles vaccine until 50. By that I mean it only lasts so long and medical professionals won't administer it until 50.
Dobgirl@reddit
Yes! I had shingles at 19 and at 45. My doctor cleared it with the insurance and had to write a letter to the pharmacy giving it. It hurts like heck but it’s not as bad as being sick for a month with shingles.
PepsiOfWrath@reddit
I had shingles at about 42, awful. I always wonder about this, but I thought I remembered something about it not lasting the rest of your life. It’s good for a handful of ears or something and once you take it, you can’t take it again?
