Remember to do your tug test and inspect your kingpin

It must have just happened when I came across it, driver looked so distraught just staring at it.

Physically get your ass out of the truck, walk under the trailer, and shine your flashlight at the 5th wheel to verify it's locked. A tug test isn't always enough to prove it's locked.
mctwiddle@reddit
exactly, and you should also always visually verify that you are not high hooked while your checking your jaws
8Devilz1ReJecT8@reddit
What is high hooked?
Behold-Roast-Beef@reddit
Its when you overshoot the kingpin and get it stuck on the wrong side of the 5th wheel. Ask me how I know š
8Devilz1ReJecT8@reddit
š thanks for clearing that up i think i can picture why you would know that
nekaiser@reddit
Donāt listen to the other guy, a high hook is when thereās a gap between the 5th wheel plate and the trailer.
Heās not wrong, overshooting is bad. It sucks to get back to normal, ask me how I know. Itās not a high hook though.
Man-Myth-Potato@reddit
Thought a high hook is when the jaws latch with a gap between the fifth wheel and apron? š¤

Right

I was pulling a set of doubles in the past, and the rear trailer hit the ground 100 miles down the road from where I picked it up. 5th wheel components wear out, and not every part is visible to the driver. It was found in a further inspection by the shop, the 5th wheel malfunctioned on the converter dolly due to a washer that wore thin.

Pictures like this make me remember

Should be a no brainer.

Hey driver you canāt park there
GuzziHero@reddit
Even if a truck is exactly where I left it, and it has the same trailer on, I always check the clip, do a tug test and make sure its following me when I pull away from a depot / rest stop. Makes no sense not to and has already saved me once.
declan-OF@reddit
I heard somewhere, probably on this subreddit, that it's a good idea to take a photo of the lock as proof that I checked. So after six months driving, I started to do just that.
On the liability front, it's a no-brainer. If there's a mechanical failure that causes a trailer drop, I can prove that I checked and confirmed a secure lock. That could save my job, avoid fines, and even keep me out of jail in the event of an accident.
And my phone auto-adjusts for lighting, with zoom, so I get a much clearer visual than with a flashlight alone. I got my first failure to lock three weeks ago after a successful tug test. It was only a 1/8th inch sliver of darkness on the right side of the locking jaw, but on the photo, it was clear that it hadn't fully engaged. If I'd only inspected it with a flashlight, I probably would have overlooked it.

So what happens now?

Landing gear were folded underneath, it's wrecker time

Well then, at least that driver doesnāt have to do the crank of shame. š¤·
Devilishish13@reddit
I donāt tugā¦I ALWAYS shine a light and look to see the pin is in place
LockportTrans@reddit
I tugged and tugged and drove away and my tail fell off. I guess I didn't inspect my kingpin close enough
Nero8762@reddit
I tug it after everyone I stop as well.
NFLTG_71@reddit
Do your tug test before you raise your landing gear?
kickniteasy@reddit
Get our and give it a visual, raise landing gear about an inch off the ground, tug, then out and raise it all the way.
NFLTG_71@reddit
I got lucky most of the guys always turn the landing gears back two or three times that way once you get up underneath it your landing gear is off there so you could do the tug test when the land of gears are on the ground
kickniteasy@reddit
Yep, same with dumping the bags before you go under depending on the height. Always takes me a couple days to learn the unspoken yard rules for uncoupling but I try to make it right for the next person.
IBringTheHeat2@reddit
Both. Do a tug after connecting, throw hoses and raise it and then pull forward 2-3 mph and slam the trailer brakes on to double check
NFLTG_71@reddit
It depends on the weather. If itās real cold, Iāll do the tug test raise my landing gears. Pull forward, put on the brakes and then pull my red tab and go in reverse to make sure theyāre properly seated and that way if any of the gears had ice on them you basically just cracked the ice if thereās any in there
masterofallvillainy@reddit
Visually check the locking jaws are secured properly. You can pass a tug test with a bad connection. And unhook mid turn
Suitable-Slip-2091@reddit
He broke his landing gear on the drop. He done.
nanneryeeter@reddit
I do that pretty oft... Oh you mean on the truck. 10-4.
