hi_im_bored13@reddit
real ones know the i8 & i3 were ladder frame
Atompunk78@reddit
I’m sorry but I’ve no idea if this is a joke or not lol, I’m pretty sure they’re carbon monocoque but I’m not 100%, or it could be some weird hybrid classic type I suppose
Imtherealwaffle@reddit
they were body on frame. carbon monocoque on top of the frame which contained front and rear suspension, battery and motors. Weird looking thing because usually you expect the monocoque to the whole chassis and bolted to 2 subframes.
Life_Menu_4094@reddit
Wow how interesting. Sounds not dissimilar in concept to the Discovery 3.
Dunaii4@reddit
The Miata of big cars - perfect design.
Atompunk78@reddit
Wow that’s so strange, and the frame was just steel then? Why did they go for this weird hybrid setup do you know?
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Bc the method used to mass-produce the carbon monocoque didn't make for a strong enough cell that it could take suspension mounting etc., so they needed to reinforce it. But that carbon cell itself was a requirement from the quandt family who controls BMW
That carbon cell concept turned into the carbon core concept which just used carbon to reinforce higher areas to keep the car lighter & lower, and then they just kinda phased it out altogether
The i8 as a whole is just beautiful execution on a terribly flawed concept you have to give it to the engineers
Atompunk78@reddit
Ahhhh I see, thanks so much for explaining! That was my understanding of the two cars lol, but I’m glad I now know more about why exactly that is
retirednavyguy@reddit
I just hope it adds weight to their cars. Too light these days.
Shmokesshweed@reddit
Add more weight and increase the grille by 500% and I'm in.
six3oo@reddit
Five. Hundred. Grilles.
jondes99@reddit
Maybe dampen the steering feel just a little bit, too.
Karrigan7@reddit
throw artificial car sound fratzonic crap thing as well
eggs_and_ham_i_am@reddit
You can get the weight added subscription for just £12 a month. Or you can combine it with the folding mirrors and heated seat pack subscription for just £56 a month.
But don't worry, you can cancel anytime you like in the app, because we want what's best for you. At BMW we care for our drivers.
badcrass@reddit
Wrought iron ladder frame
OWeise@reddit
Future BMWs will be powered both by batteries and their own gravitational field pulling your destination towards you.
tlivingd@reddit
Isn’t there prior art in the US from the 20’s?
Slasher1738@reddit
Finally gonna see that 3 series truck
RunnerLuke357@reddit
Finally, the G8 ST comes to the states, just less reliable and a little uglier.
NorCalAthlete@reddit
Sport 'utes for everyone!
JARDIS@reddit
They don't really need to worry about the offroader part tbh. We all know like the Land Rover, G wagon, LX, that it'll never see a spec of mud.
andrewia@reddit
It's true, but capability sells. It's like owning an M4C, when an M440i is already hard to push to its limits unless you are a very capable track driver. Or a Jeep Wrangler instead of a Compass or Toyota Rav4.
RunnerLuke357@reddit
What really sells Jeeps (and by Jeep, I mean Wrangler not the pretend "Jeeps") to non off-roaders is the look and the convertible aspect. A guy I work with bought one with the intention of letting his son use it but quickly realized that he and his wife enjoyed it too much. The main thing he citied was the fun of riding around the lake with the top down and the sun out.

InfinitePossibility8@reddit
Ah yes, body on frame, truly a novel concept.
Drzhivago138@reddit
They already did BOF with the original i3.
andrewia@reddit
For BMW it's pretty weird. It shows they're serious about entering the off-road market with a BEV/EREV.
JadedYogurtcloset830@reddit
Means more strength bearing

“Patents ladder frame chassis”
I’m sorry, for some reason that cracked me up.
Good_Air_7192@reddit
Who says these companies don't innovate any more.
f0000@reddit
Is “for electric cars” going to be the new “on a computer” for patenting things that were already done a long time ago and getting away with it?
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
They really seem serious to make their G wagon answer.
YellowFogLights@reddit
Munich’s gonna be real surprised when they see an F-150 Lightning /s
Shmokesshweed@reddit
"Ja, it is big like Americans."
