What is something your country is surprisingly good at?
Posted by ineedtocalmup@reddit | AskBalkans | View on Reddit | 509 comments
While Balkan countries might not be seen as highly developed, they still generally meet the basic needs of their populations. In fact, in certain areas, they even rival Western European standards or rank among the best in specific statistics. What is one unexpected area where your country truly excels?
Should_have_been_ded@reddit
People from my country either leave to find work somewhere else, and they are known as honest hard employees. Either go to steal, and we are famously known as notorious thieves.
Far-Active-649@reddit
Either bulgaria or romania
Medical_Cupcakes@reddit
I've supervised construction sites in Germany and have heard a lot of complaints from company owners on their romanian workers. Not known as hard workers at all..
Far-Active-649@reddit
Idk how they work, never worked with them. I work as seasonal waitress in Austria during ski season and often hear Austrians saying "Ah, looking to steal something" when they see a transporter with either bulgarian or romanian license plates lol

Subsidies
Everything is subsidized so much that the avg. salary (in Skopje) goes a long way for stuff such as food/bills/rent/fuel. If you earn an avg. wage in Skopje your quality of life is equivalent to that of Slovakia or Hungary, which is rather impressive considering that Macedonia is one of the poorest countries in Europe and not in the EU.
For example, two working adults with an avg. salary in Skopje can finance a 200m2 house with a 500m2 yard in Skopje that's 1.5KM away from the city center. Good luck getting that deal anywhere in Europe, you would be lucky to finance a 50m2 apartment 20KM away from work.
yonk9@reddit
Damn, once a week sounds good. We eat at the restaurant maybe once a month.
khatberry@reddit
Is it still like this in Macedonia?
Ok-Opportunity5769@reddit
Prices are jumping every day and salaries cannot follow the inflation plus whole system is fucked up also, because major cities are left with older population, in my broader family half of cousins are gone never to come back in country, and I won't talk about corruption at all, once country that could be Switzerland in Balkans end up on back of the bus.
trisul-108@reddit
That is amazing ... or should I say "normal", but only real for Macedonia.
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
I believe you don't live there, as we have seen you said you live in the Netherlands, so it's biased opinion.
markohf12@reddit
I work remotely and spend 6 months (the max I am allowed) per year in Macedonia and the rest in the Netherlands, specially in winter when the weather is shit there.
You are the one who post weekly that the gov. in Macedonia is bad, my opinion is valid.
Svarog1984@reddit
I spend 10 months per year in the Netherlands and 2 in Macedonia. But I would say that the Skopje winters are better than the Amsterdam winters. Not counting the smog ofcourse.

Dubbing
Turkiye is really the #1 of it. Turkish is very phonetical and clear, meaning it doesn't have dirty sounds (not in an insulting way), for example we don't have the grunts of French, the letter Ayn of Arabic where you sound like you're chocking while trying to pronounce A etc.
Turkish is also very clear, in latin, semitic, iranic and Sinitic languages, people speak with emotions, rythm, their vowels dance in the phrase. Turkish is very monotone, but it isn't cold like slavic languages too. It's just very stabile.
That makes Turkish a perfect candidate for dubbing.
You can watch this from TLOU2 if you want to see an example.
Ellie confronts Joel (TLOU2)
Medical_Cupcakes@reddit
How is slavic cold lol. You mean harsh? Thinking of russian poetry and I don't think it sounds harsh. Slavic languages can be quite soft.
Empty-Pace-4228@reddit
As somebody who lives in Belgium and who lived in Bulgaria for 2 years, I encountered with lots of Slavic people. Poles talk and behave like complete ghosts, the rest are very short cut, straight to the point and robotic.
This was my impression, no bad intent
TheGringoLife@reddit
To each his own but for me Turkish sounds like someone’s drowning.
Empty-Pace-4228@reddit
If someone sounds like this, it means the way he/she speaks is very wrong
XlAcrMcpT@reddit
To me it sounds like an old, broken down diesel engine desperately trying to start yet choking and failing due to the amount of consonants in every single word. Literally took me a week to learn "thank you"
mflfkd@reddit
Really? If that's the case, tebrikler for your effort. I didn't say "congratulations" because that would have been a word you would have struggled with much more
XlAcrMcpT@reddit
Actually, this is a great example of what I mean:
Tebrikler has 6 consonants out of 8 letters, while congratiulations only has 9 out of 15. Turkish has an abnormal (to us) amount of consonants that make it sound, in essence, like a broken down diesel engine. Vowels help a lot with making words flow if you get what I mean.
mflfkd@reddit
I see, so you're talking about the ratio, not the number.
XlAcrMcpT@reddit
Exactly. It's ratio of consonants (and also the speed at which a native talks). If spoken slowly (or even sang), turkish doesn't sound bad. But when a native starts speaking really fast in a conversation, it turns into the diesel engine.
TheGringoLife@reddit
https://youtu.be/Fw8MR3I8XrQ?si=EJVImHNHPt1Pj5rS It’s Kazakh but i get your description 😂

Yeah, they're related languages.

As an elder millennial that had to learn english from video games, here is my two cents. the other side of the coin is that the english literacy levels of the turkish population unfortunately stagnated compared to what could have been, had subtitles were the chosen way to go.
mao_dze_dun@reddit
This. I grew up in the 90s with Cartoon Network and no dubbing. Now I am trying to force my daughter to switch to English for HBO and SkyShowtime, but all the kids shows are dubbed and she prefers it.
Fluffy_Beautiful2107@reddit
What is with turks and the perception that not having gluttural consonants makes their language "more civilized". I've definitely heard that framing a lot, which I find strange. I'm assuming its because these consonants are associated with eastern "köylü" azeri people, kurds and arabs and so it's like a class / racial thing.
Empty-Pace-4228@reddit
It's nothing to do with being civilized my friend. I'm not anti-French, anti-Arab, anti-villager or something. I only said it is compatible with dubbing, one can also argue that Arabic is good for poetry, every culture and language has its own aura.
AgitatedDare2445@reddit
Yep, especially for 2010s cartoons I generally prefer Turkish dub over the original.

Believe it or not, semiconductors. Ever since the Soviet era Bulgaria had a rather broad expertise in the industry and nowadays produces 80% of the sensors for all the European carmakers.
Even recently we signed a cooperation with the UK for further expansion of the industry, but I doubt that was even in the news in Bulgaria.

NoodlePie5687@reddit
Moreover we have a lot of design centers in Sofia. Purely semiconductors - Melexis, Renesas and Global Foundries in Sofia (GF is actually a fab). Automotive sub-systems and sensors design - Bosch, Visteon, Sensata, Festo We have sort of a industry hub here in Sofia and those companies are always talent hungry, but hardly anyone talks about it. First one is self explanatory but the second one is a real surprise. Croatia is among the top 3 countries when it comes to organ donations per capita and has been a consistent leader in this area, usually just behind Spain, which is a global leader and Portugal, another bright example.
The main reason is that these countries adopted the opt-out system, where everyone is considered a donor unless they explicitly refuse it and the fact that the doctors in hospitals are encouraged to detect potential donors and ask for permission from either the patients before death or the family immediately post death.
This system has saved thousands of lives over the years and it's a shame other countries don't follow suit.

Can someone elaborate on the story of Balkans? I’m stating to hear news folks and such talk about South America as a region to ‘’Balkanize.’’ The way they are using the term makes it sound da very very dangerous!
-Against-All-Gods-@reddit
Generally mountainous region, which means
historically hard to govern
lot of insular communities, able to maintain certain distinctiveness, in a quite restricted space
Located at one of two easiest entry points to Europe from Asia (the other one is through Ukraine and the Pannonian basin). Regular invasions from Asia for millennia.
Therefore always pawns in the game of various empires who found Balkans too important to control and too hard to actually govern. From Roman times onwards essentially a military frontier.
Add nationalism which was partially again used by the empires as strategy and partially uncritically adopted by local intelligentsia, and partially uncritically adopted by all the fractured, intermingled communities.
Therefore, once the age of empires ended, the communities had a lot of scores to settle. This led to fragmentation into ever smaller states and a lot of conflict over borders.
s0ur_apples@reddit
Love the handle, thanks for the breakdown.

Well ... We have a lot of history fighting each other. Our economies are not great, infrastructure is lacking. We are generally not great at doing things in groups larger than 2, which kinda makes us suck at the society building stuff.
But we are also really good at not giving a fuck. We complain a lot but honestly don't live that bad. If you listen to people from the region you would think we are the worst place on Earth
But with all the shit others are doing lately around us ... I gotta say that pretty fast we are starting to look like the normal ones.
The dangerous part ... We've been called the Powderkeg of Europe but hopefully all the war stuff is now behind us, I really think none of us want more of that anytime soon. And an honest reading of the history will show that a lot of the bad stuff that happened here in the last 200 years is because the big powers were playing their game on our territory
Far-Active-649@reddit
Blaming the western powers is tasting a little bit sour. At least talking about the Yugoslav war belligerents - it's bad education and a full hillbilly mindset. The cherry on the cake was Tito just forcefully suffocating any of those things instead of actively doing something against it. Western powers did their things there, but it didn't implant the hillbilly mindset. Just looking at comments in 2026 about that topic makes me giggle a little bit and realize that you can do as much as you want - A serb, croat and bosniak hillbilly stays a hillbilly regardless where they live, how much money they have, what they drive or what they wear. Hillbillies are in my opinion the majority of the population there or else we wouldn't have hillbillies in politics making the hillbillies even bigger hillbillies.

Macedonia is a giant when it comes to tobacco production. 19% of europe's tobacco is produced in the country, which accounts for 0.5% of tobacco produced worldwide.
Additionally, between ww1 and ww2, this little midget of a country produced 43% of the worlds supply of opium, which had 14-16% morphine content, 3 times more powerful than china's. It was the worlds strongest opium, on par with afghanistans, due to the very similar climates in macedonia and afghaniastans southwestern opium growing region (cold dry winter followed by a sharp change into wet and warm spring followed by a dry and hot summer). Opium production was heavily surpassed under Yugoslavia but the poppy seed did make its way to our national coat of arms because of this.
These were the good ratings. The bad ratings: corruption, brain drain, pollution, tax evasion, more or less like all our komshii ❤️

For example, in the International Olympiad in Informatics, it has 135 all time medals (gold, silver, and bronze combined) - the only country which has more medals is China, with 146, but it also has a population of 1 billion people.
