I drive a regular 2013 Honda civic
Suitable_Diver_2395@reddit
I change it by myself so approx 25€ plus oil and filter, rounded up 110€
TheWhogg@reddit
110 euro?? 10L of LL-04 (we also have a diesel) is AUD75 on a good day. Call it 50 euro plus 20 for 2 OEM filters. So I’m paying 70 for TWO changes DIY. What’s going on over there?
Suitable_Diver_2395@reddit
I buy 5l of original BMW LL-04 oil for like 75-80€, approx 15€ for filter and 20€ for renting a garage to change it.
MultipleOrgasmDonor@reddit
You’re getting 10l of LL04 for €50? Oil changes on my BMWs have been a consistent $80-100 in supplies over the last 10 years or so. I typically pay a shop around 2x that figure to do it for me, located in California
TheWhogg@reddit
My last 2 buckets were AUD74 and 81. They were 50% off, of course.
Erus00@reddit
My experience as well. I just paid $85 for 10 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic and my filter is $15. $100 just in supplies.
fatninja987@reddit
For me it’s 8 quarts and about 45 minutes
Neo_Anderson302@reddit
$41 for my car
PurpleSausage77@reddit
My favourite is Kirkland synthetic 2 pack of 5L synthetic oil jugs for $45cad. Bulk dozen Rockauto oil filters work out to $1cad a piece.
$23.50cad for one synthetic oil & filter change ($17.25usd) on a Honda/Toyota/Mazda beater.
sittings4u@reddit
Costco just had a sale 4 5 quart jugs for 55. Bought 20 qts. Oem oil filters Honda in bulk 6 bucks each, I buy 16/17 for 100.
PurpleSausage77@reddit
Is that US? I haven’t seen a 4 pack. I’ll have to keep an eye out. It’s good stuff also when I looked in to who made it, and synthetic. Has to be the best oil change you can do for the money.
sittings4u@reddit
Online only
fasta_guy88@reddit
Typically $75-100 at a dealer or reputable mechanic. Don't get it done at Jiffy Lube, Pep Boys, or a chain tire place.
elmariachi304@reddit
Ideally you get your oil change at your mechanic's shop. It gives them a chance to give the car a look over and it's a high-margin easy job they like to take. It's a relationship builder. One day you'll need more expensive job with more labor hours but because he knows he's gonna see you twice a year for your oil change he'll give you the best deal possible.
PlasticTreeonaHill@reddit
This is very thoughtful.
Only thing is, even my go to shop, will try and put some weird ass oil in. Some brand I’ve never even seen. While I know the standard for oils is pretty standard, I’m still not putting in oil I’ve completely never heard of…
Geometrae@reddit
I jsut buy my own oil and filter and tell them to use it
PlasticTreeonaHill@reddit
That’s what I offered, I said, I’d go down the block to Honda real quick and grab their oil and filter. And he said nah it’s cool let’s just use ours. And it rubbed me the wrong way.
On other vehicles I do my own maintenance. Own a 99’ supercharged prelude on methanol.
elmariachi304@reddit
Any reputable shop will use the oil you ask them to if you’re willing to pay for it. My shop doesn’t stock the synthetic oil my car uses so I make an appointment and they order it ahead of time. That might be your issue, if you wanna be able to just pop in with no appointment you lose your ability to order whatever oil you want.
PlasticTreeonaHill@reddit
Well what happened was… we bought an under warranty 2.0T accord, and wanted to get it its first oil change. Told them I’d grab Honda synthetic etc etc, and he said no it’s fine we’ll just use what we stock here. It rubbed me the wrong way for my very first oil change I wanted to get the car.
Additional-Run1610@reddit
Deal and mechanic in the same paragraph is wild
pooo_pourri@reddit
What’s wrong with the jiffy lube/pep boys?
ObviousAlias7@reddit
I grew up knowing a lot of guys who worked at these places and could tell you some stories. Just don't go.
It was min wage work by folks who don't care. That leads to a recipe of negligence, and malicious compliance.
ImplementLogical4130@reddit
Unscrewing/screwing back a bolt and an oil filter is apparently too hard
Alorow_Jordan@reddit
I have lost my plastic drag plate due to doing this.
ImplementLogical4130@reddit
I got 3 bolts left and 4 zip ties.
Entire_Meet_6266@reddit
I just take before and after pics and double check everything before I leave the parking lot🤣☝️a few times they for got to put my airfilter cover back on
North-Hope2730@reddit
bro like i feel u on the dealer thing smh
No_Geologist_3690@reddit
You’d be surprised. Don’t forget putting oil back in.
fasta_guy88@reddit
Jiffy Lube makes its living on oil changes by paying minimum wage to barely trained techs. Dealers do oil changes as a loss leader - they train and pay their techs much better, so they lose money on oil changes hoping to recover it on other service.
Concealmentchris@reddit
While I agree, it’s wild to say loss leader when dealerships charge the most out of all the options 😂
ThaPoopBandit@reddit
They help keep the lights on at my dealer.
Major_Enthusiasm1099@reddit
*Unless they offer a free oil change of course. Got new tires yesterday and they gave me a free oil change
ramtough_63@reddit
Today's oils are a formalized recipe to fit certain standards. Most actually exceed thr standards but don't pay for the licensing or they do pay for the licensing and charge more. Brands have become no more than that "Branding" the certifications are meerly a licensing stream of revenue for specific companies.
Diamond_Specialist@reddit
If you look around and find a coupon (easily available and most dealers will price match) you can get it for $50-60
kingmandon@reddit
I do it myself for peace of mind. I use premium oil and filter and I never spend over $45.
More times than not, whenever ive taken it in to shop or dealership, the wait is terrible and they tend to mess something up.
Existing-Bus-1155@reddit
Ram 1500 cost me about $120-140 depending where I go
SmoothSlavperator@reddit
Too much. It used to be like 50% over the cost of materials and now its 300%. Its friggin' stupid.
For the first time in my 35 year car driving history, I started changing my own oil.
The first time you do it, it will pay for all the tools you need with some leftover.
If you buy the oil and filter on sale it will cost you right around $30. Keep an eye on wOOt, Amazon, and Walmart. Shit goes on sale ALL the time.
Kingrcf3@reddit
I’d say about $100 is the going rate for a decent shop up in NY
gmez3@reddit
i do it myself for around 45 (cad) but will go to my mechanic if im in a rush and he charges 70
real-BruceBanner@reddit
I bring mine to the Chevy dealership I got it from. $78 for a pickup, they check breaks ect and rotate the tires. I try to have them do any work that’s covered under my warranty and oil changes. Gives me a piece of mind
Nothing but horror stories from those chains
Temporary-Event7163@reddit
I do my oil changes myself. I usually spend around $40 by going to autozone but I'm going on a budget with Costco oil. This time is less the $30!
chefwoodworkerartist@reddit
Costs the price of oil and a filter
TheGeek00@reddit
A Honda oil change is one of the easier things you can do in life. Might be worth it to learn! You won’t be able to do it as quickly as a professional shop, but it’s a good way to save money and kill an hour.
Klutzy_Concept_1324@reddit
I get em for bout 54.00
Luxcrluvr@reddit
$140 for 7 quarts Mobile1 full synthetic with filter, fluid top ups and complimentary car wash. I'd do it myself but nobody told me that the oil would be hot 😂. Never again
lpg975@reddit
About $40 if you do it yourself with a good synthetic oil and a good filter.
lethargicbureaucrat@reddit
Walmart Supertech full synthetic oil and a Supertech filter are all you need.
lpg975@reddit
Yup, for 99% of applications, that'll work just fine! I personally prefer the Valvoline Restore and Protect, which us a whopping $29.97/jug and either the Fram Synthetic Endurance filters for our kid hauler (Jeep Compass) or the ACDelco UPF64R for my fun car (Chevy Camaro).
jenesia-CakeEatnNPC-@reddit
hopefully u bought a bunch of fram filters as they aren't available anymore, the company (First Brands Group LLC) went bankrupt last year.
lpg975@reddit
I did not. I should have, but I didn't get a chance! I knew that First Brands went bankrupt. Thankfully, they still carry the Synthetic Endurance filters at Wal Mart...so far. Lol
jenesia-CakeEatnNPC-@reddit
Stock up! anywhere/anytime u see em. there are still some in the wild. (i work in auto)
lpg975@reddit
I used to be a GM at Advance Auto Parts! Where are you at?
jenesia-CakeEatnNPC-@reddit
AutoZone, as they're not having financial difficulties (for now, at least!)
lpg975@reddit
Haha, yea. I jumped ship from Advancd around when their financial problems came to light. One of the reasons I left. That, and my DM was crazy. Trying to get me to fire people left and right. Sending emails out at 4AM. Shit like that. Ridiculous.
jenesia-CakeEatnNPC-@reddit
yet AutoZone is opening stores & hubs worldwide everyday!? O'Reilly's is keeping pace pretty well also. wonder what Advances problem is??
lpg975@reddit
They don't give a shit about their people. They treat them like disposable commodities. They work the GMs to death and expect them to basically live at the store. They expect people to run the store alone and do the work of five people regularly. They've got issues lol.
jenesia-CakeEatnNPC-@reddit
AutoZone is definitely not different there so 🤷🏼 but theyre staying afloat and even profitable! floors me. the less cars are DIY tho the less they'll be needed. even commercial doesnt deliver to dealerships much and idk how much longer regular garages are going to be around since everything went Hybrid.
lpg975@reddit
There's still PLENTY of non-hybrid ICE powered vehicles on the road, even new ones still. That's not going to change any time soon.
jenesia-CakeEatnNPC-@reddit
idk.. i hear alot of talk lately about the new Slate truck...
fasta_guy88@reddit
Yes, it is easy (and relatively cheap) to change your own oil. Until you don’t tighten the filter or plug enough, or tighten it too much. And how do you dispose of the used oil properly. If it costs $40 for the oil and filter, I’m happy to pay double to have someone else be responsible for screw ups.
lpg975@reddit
I've been doing it for 22 years now. I just don't fuck it up, I guess? I always double check my work?
I change my own fluids and do all of my own maintenance on my and my wife's vehicles, as well as many friends' and familys' vehicles. I understand paying someone for peace of mind, but I can't justify the amount of money it costs for auto labor these days. I'm not wealthy. Never have been, and probably never will be. If you are, that's great! Congratulations and more power to you!
I've also been burned too many times by trusting a shop to use a certain type of oil and oil filter just to find out they took my money and bought the cheapest Chinese shit they could possibly find, just to increase their profit margins. That's not cool, and now no one touches my vehicles but me. I've probably saved tens of thousands of dollars in labor over the last 22 years, honestly.
Used oil can be taken to any auto parts store. I used to be a GM of an Advance Auto Parts, before they started circling the drain lol. I believe that even Wal Mart will take used oil and used filters as well.
Finally, I ENJOY working on my vehicles. So there's that, too.
Gwendolyn-NB@reddit
DIY - $40 in supplies not including your drink of choice.
3rd party-$75-$130
Concealmentchris@reddit
Average probably $60. I’d say they range from 40-80 depending on a few factors like oil type. Always check for coupons. I like Meineke and they always have coupons.
thenew3@reddit
I get my oil changed twice a year at the dealer for free. (I negotiated in a lifetime oil change package when buying the car, so far as long as I own the car, I can go to any of the dealer's franchise shops around the country and get oil changed twice a year for free).
The dealer normally charges $120 (plus taxes and fees) for synthetic oil change.
Reputable local shop charges $100 for same synthetic oil change but often has sales for $60. (nearly every holiday big or small is a sale for a $60 synthetic oil service).
PollutionOld9327@reddit
Spend the $40 to buy a filter and 5 quarts of oil and change it yourself.
Financial_Coach4760@reddit
$85. Full synthetic oil. V6.
This-Permission-2618@reddit
$35 diy from walmart
SafetyGuy1963@reddit
Full synthetic is $35-$40, depending on the sale at Autozone. Oil change shop is $75-$100.
Willing_Sink_3623@reddit
I've only worked at high end dealers, but a base 4cyl crapwagon is right around $200
Healthy-Brilliant549@reddit
You do. 50 bucks roughly They do. 100 bucks roughly
sisyphus_met_icarus@reddit
I did both our cars in my garage the other weekend for $50 each (Cdn). Including changing the filters
xSquidLifex@reddit
$20 + BYO oil (and crush washer if needed) and filter at my house or a 6 pack of beer
otterland@reddit
$80-100 here in Nashville for synthetic and a reasonable quality filter.
$25 if you use Kirkland oil, mid range filter, and do it yourself. Honda actually only requires a filter for the B service so for an A service you could do a change for 17.50 worth of Costco oil.
todd311@reddit
6 quarts of full synthetic & filter In OKC is $85-$105 at the reputable places I’ve been
ThaPoopBandit@reddit
100 is pretty average in my area for syn blend, as almost no one in my area does conventional anymore
MRV-DUB@reddit
I charge 70 for reg ,85 for synthetic.
Moose-Suspicious@reddit
I do my own, I get the synthetic oil from costco (about $15, 5QT) and I order WIX filters from rockauto ($6/ Filter). so $22-27 per oil change. Its about $75 at the quick lube when I dont have the time.
OkCartographer175@reddit
call and ask
look at their website
LividLibrarian3003@reddit
50-100 just go to a place that checks everything and makes it worth it. But fuck jiffy lube
TheWhogg@reddit
Find a 5L bottle of API SP 0W20 and a genuine filter. Add half an hour labour. That would be a fair average.
You can pay less, going to a 10 minute place. You might not be getting the oil grade you need but you will be getting something. This may also involve overtightening.
I DIY because I know exactly what oil and filter I’m getting and I can buy them when they’re discounted not at dealer price. I know how much torque I’m applying to the sump plug and that it has a new washer, so I’m not cumulatively having the threads ripped out of an aluminium sump. I can inspect the oil and the filter for glitter. And I can do it as fast as I can drive to a garage and return home, at a time convenient to me, draining until it’s all out and the dripping stops not leaving the dirty last half litre in the sump.

For my gf’s vehicle at the dealership is 40-50. Toyota.
I do my old trucks change at home it cost with filter 39-42
Insertsociallife@reddit
Mine are about $25 - 4qt at $3.60/at for oil (I love Costco) and $10 for the filter (what a dumb thing to cheap out on).
At a shop, I genuinely don't know, I've never had mine changed at a shop.
Talentless_Cooking@reddit
Depending on wher you live, conventional would be cheaper than synthetic, but you can go longer between changes with synthetic.
You mention the car, but not your country.
Tuques@reddit
Dealership 60-100 bucks. In your driveway, 50 bucks.
Bdawgz3520@reddit
$30-40 if I do it myself.... Probably twice that now if I didn't learn how to do it.
