is modding a car gonna die within the next 20 years?

its looking bad out here gentlemen, our kind might not exist very long. im 18, I own a 2002 mustang v6, automatic, with 134k miles, and I love it to death. no i will not be modifying it, you stinky
my dream car is a challenger. any look, any trim, just low enough miles to not be beat to shit, but not so low I won't be able to afford it until it's liable to be registered as a classic. manual required, so r/t trim at minimal
now, after some light research, here's the listing of mods you can do for a somewhat reasonable price;
-
cry
-
cry harder
you cant really do any besides basic shitty bolt ons, and those aren't really power adders, moreso random nothing to waste money on, except maybe an exhaust, which will make it sound pretty nice. other than than, you're choices are limited unless your money is unlimited
I come from mustangs, a platform where its not unheard of to strip it down to its birthday suit, do major rust repair and prevention, rebuild the motor, manual swap it, repaint it, rebuild the suspension, and have it back on the road in like 5 years, for something like 30k, just a random number. in truth, that wont even get you in a challenger worth it's weight in salt, and to do anything kind of actual modding, you'll have to deal with computers, sensors, reprogramming shit, getting expensive tunes done, its bananas what all you have to do, to basically get no extra power added
all of this to say, im afraid im seeing what everyone else here is. we are quickly approaching a day and age where, as a mechanic, its getting harder and harder to even service your mom's pop-tart aquire-er, let alone if you actually ever wanna do cool shit with these cars, it'll basically be impossible
long story short, fuck new cars, im buying a manual Ford ranger, and saving up for something cool. Will maybe still get a challenger, but won't be for maaaany years
Jmauld@reddit
People are already modifying Teslas. If we can figure out how to make those faster we’ll modify anything. No. You’re completely wrong here.
CableMartini@reddit (OP)
me? buddy, you fried my brain, one second
number one, putting a carbon fiber hood on your model S is not modifying it, sorry
I Josh, but still. while I dont wanna sound like every other braindead car guy around, I dont think EVs are ever gonna be "car guy" cars. they miss so much of the experience that car guys are here for. they are fine for regular people, but not for car guys. also, people who have modifying Tesla money aren't the majority. some teenager cant go with his dad in their garage and rebuild a Tesla, but they sure could do that to a foxbody or what have you
Jmauld@reddit
Like I said…. YOU won’t be modifying cars, because you’re too hardheaded to see the future. But the rest of us will.

LawAbidingCityzen@reddit
Teslas are not going to keep the modified car scene alive. Just stop with the cap. Imagine pulling up to a car show with a bunch of Teslas and Aodhon wheels. Just stop!
Jmauld@reddit
No shit. They are just an example. Go wash your red hat.
LawAbidingCityzen@reddit
It was a horrible example then.
Jmauld@reddit
It’s a perfect example.
CableMartini@reddit (OP)
am I hardheaded? or am I just simple?
do you know how much fucking money that guy would have to spend on that? and for what?
you're clearly some lame Tesla fan boy, go kiss your boyfriend man, im not hardheaded for liking shit to be simple and affordable 😭😭
Jmauld@reddit
You’re just stuck in the past man.

That’s 300 SIMPLE and RELIABLE horsepower than can be bolted into just about any vehicle. Put two in for 600 hp.
CableMartini@reddit (OP)
2k for a set of 2, true true. who's doing the fab work? who's making you a custom harness? who's making the entire drivetrain outside of the motors? who's rewiring your pedals? you do realize, for this to work, you will be ripping out your cars entire harness, right? engine harness, motor harness, trans harness, exhaust harness, all the little sensors everywhere
have you done all of that work yourself? can you say first hand how easy and simple that is?
Jmauld@reddit
Oh so you don’t really mean modifying cars. You’re talking about adding an intake, exhaust and some stickers and terrorizing the local neighborhood. I’m more of the type that’s currently slapping a GM engine into Mazda rx8. And yes I have to install a different gas pedal and rewire half the car.
CableMartini@reddit (OP)
thats cool, talk about that dawg, what? no one cars about Tesla swapping a way cooler truck dawg.
I would like to be able to do stuff like that, I just dont have the bread nessessary, not even close
Jmauld@reddit
No. The electric swaps are bad ass. You just haven’t been in one.
IronSlanginRed@reddit
What? Modding cars is very much still alive and well. With modern technology and the accessibility of 3d printing its easier than ever.
CableMartini@reddit (OP)
not modding old cars, yea old cars are moddable, thats not what I was askin. im talking about new cars in particular. new technology applied to older application are great, but when that new technology is used in newer application to make the manufacturing of the car easier, usually leading to overcomplictaed and cheaply made garbo, thats where the issue with future ownership of these modern cars lies

I doubt it for now, but you never know. Hoping it doesn't as I just built a platform called ModLinQ around modding and sellign modified vehicles with build sheets, service records, etc around the build itself.
anonymouslosername@reddit
Power added?

CableMartini@reddit (OP)
yea, man, a light 9 grand, and then you'll need to rebuild the block if you want anything more than 8psi of boost, which one top of that, the hemi has its quirks, so I can imagine throwing boost at a stock 5.7 is a great idea
anonymouslosername@reddit
whatcouldgowrong 🙃
Dr_Ramekins_MD@reddit
Probably not, but it will be harder for sure. And require different skills. Modding cars didn't die with the switch from mechanical to electronic systems (eg carbs to EFI), modders just adapted and learned how to work with the new systems. Future cars might need actual hackers to jailbreak them, but someone will figure out a way.
What you're talking, though, is more just the nature of naturally aspirated engines. Getting more power is difficult and expensive compared to just cranking up the boost on a turbocharged engine.
I added almost 100hp to my regular ass Golf with a $600 off the shelf tune and about 45 minutes of time, for example.
CableMartini@reddit (OP)
is that a new golf in question, or an older one?
Wonderful_Setting_29@reddit
Idk about them, but a mk8 golf r stage 1 tune adds 130hp according to unitronic. That costs $700. People are definitely modding new stuff.
CableMartini@reddit (OP)
well golf's have always been lit, but when I say new, i mean 2026. not 2010s not 2000s, 2020s and beyond, for even close to the amount being spent on modifying stuff from the past, like the 2010s, 2000s, and 90s, ykwim
Dr_Ramekins_MD@reddit
I think it's also worth considering that modern cars kinda need less modifying, too. Stock for stock a regular V6 Camry from today would absolutely dog walk the 90s V8 Mustang I used to have in basically every metric. Faster, more reliable, better handling/braking, more efficient, etc. Just not the "cool" factor.
But when buying 300+ horsepower from the dealership is pretty common, there are plenty of people who would consider themselves car enthusiasts who find that to be "enough."
Wonderful_Setting_29@reddit
Yeah, you can just go buy a car that is already fast and handles great. Cosmetic modifications arent as big as they used to be, so there are less mods going on and the ones that are are more subtle. Tunes, wheels, splitters. That kind of stuff.
CableMartini@reddit (OP)
thats what im saying. People like this community, 2j swapping a 240z, that shit is sick. I mean moreso the people, the culture of modifying. it's getting killed off by not only the overcomplication of modern cars, but also the pretty marvelous feats of modern engineering. when's shits so sweet out the box, why even modify?, in days of old, it was to make it fast, not too long ago, it was to make it your own, and I the future, no one will care, everyone is gonna be driving their state mandated beige or "smoked grey" mobility cubes lmao
Wonderful_Setting_29@reddit
Mk8 r started in 2022. They just released the face-lift. Im sure the tune will work on an 8.5. So they're modifying new cars. I literally autocross a modified 7.5.
Dr_Ramekins_MD@reddit
It's about 10 years old
leesfer@reddit
The car scene and modding is already dead compared to what it was in the 90s and 00s.
LifeWithAdd@reddit
The 90s-00s in NYC and Philly was like living in the first few Fast and Furious movies. Car shows filling up massive empty industrial complexes every week. If you showed up with a boring or close to stock car, they would stop you and tell you to turn around. Incredibly organized street races with hundreds of cars lining the streets, the audiophile car guys blasting the soundtrack for everyone. People unloading full drag cars off trailers for a couple of pulls down Front or 61st Street. Cops swarming and everyone running to the next race location and setting right back up again. It was wild and everyone just seemed to know where to be every Friday night. By the end of the 00s, you could see there were fewer cars out every week. The cops posted up before the races even had a chance to start. It was legendary time that I don’t think we’ll ever see again.
CableMartini@reddit (OP)
I agree, wasn't even alive then, but hearing the songs of old can tell me that much. following the downward spiral is all im talking about here
phate_exe@reddit
I dunno, I'm having enough fun modifying the EV that I daily drive (mostly to make it better for autocross) that I haven't spent much time working on the project cars that were a big part of the original reason I bought the EV. Suspension work, wheels/tires that the car was never intended to have, a reflash for more power and less-intrusive traction/stability control, and upgrades to the stereo so my music sounds better while I blast around in my twitchy little electric gokart.
Somewhere-A-Judge@reddit
It seems like your problem is just that newer performance cars aren't affordable if you are a teenager wo hasn't had time to build a career or savings yet. This has been the case for a long time.
There's a reason why the tuner car scene was the biggest back in the day - almost anybody could buy a Civic or similar and start slapping parts on it. Your challenger is more like an S2000 back then.
DaveCootchie@reddit
Hot rodders have always found a way. They thought hot rodding was dead when fuel injection was just starting. Or people though cats were always going to be restrictive and awful.
People shit on bolt ones but any modification is still good for individualism sometimes wheels suspension are all a car needs. I've seen some EVs dumped on cool wheels that look awesome.
N0Tbanned@reddit
No
Lower_Kick268@reddit
No because you can modify an EV too
