A friend of mine visiting Serbia got brutally beaten by police. And he was the one who called the police because his personal belongings was stolen by a gypsy. The police literally didn't do anything because he is Turkish. Argument turned into a fist fight with the gypsy and Serbian police arrested my friend and beat him brutally and kept him arrested for 1 day. I was legit gonna cry when I saw the scars in his face. We face police brutality here in Turkey as well...

Sorry to hear what happened to your friend, I hope he is alright now. Gypsies are often prioratized as potential goverment supporters or helpers (I don't hate Roma population of course, but many of them are used as supporters of regime). I remember a story when police beaten up some guy and arrested him for a day (he was literally doing nothing), they later said that they mixed him up or something like that, but he then needed to go to doctors, it happened during the summer when police reached the peak on brutality. I'm aware that police is also brutal in Turkey, we definitely deserve better.

Well, in some countries getting a job with the police is like getting in the mafia, organized crime family. You need to know someone to get in, you have to protect your comrades through thick and thin and they will protect you, your salary is just one source of your income, you are basically an enforcer for the more, bribes are normal. I watched a very interesting video analysing this phenomenon and the conclusion was that its most likely due to lack of reporting not necessarily the safety of women. Also in a lot of Balkan countries spousal SA is not recognized.

I once dated a Turkish tourist in my hometown in Greece. About a decade ago basically. We were having fun for a while. At one of our dates she told me casually she was carrying pepper spay on her person. I told her that normally in Greece pepper spray is categorised under the weapons law and hence she needed a licence for a) the carry and b) the use. She didn’t give a shit and told me that in Turkey it’s normal for women to carry pepper sprays.

It has been in high last 10-15 years, so woman/girls are carrying something to protect themselves because authorities isn’t doing shit about it. There have been many vitriol attacks on women (most victims include women) but also on men - recently, a Roma woman was caught stealing from a shop and she threw nitric acid on the employee. Normally, per the Penal Code, sentences are punishable by prison for 15 years maximum, but courts seldom issue anything close to the actual maximum sentence.

In Greece our police are not as lenient - police actually seize weapons they find. Now, a prosecutor is unlikely to press charges on a woman carrying pepper spray without authorisation, but seizures do happen. Like, in Greece we go after steroids and pepper sprays but p** or corrupt politicians seldom get convicted - usually governments even vote for a „prosecution prohibition“ in some cases as well. But heaven forbid you actually have to defend yourself with pepper spray.

You misunderstood my argument. Hijabi women come from lower income families in Turkey, maybe it's like that in Egypt too. So they are exposed to more violence oriented men, and they know the threat better. Non-hijabi girls are clueless about what will happen, so they are shocked when it happens, and can't protect themselves the first time.
