Does anyone think the Mach e is a mustang in any terms other than name though
mustangfan12@reddit
Its not a real Mustang
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
Ford makes the Mustang. The Mustang is whatever they say it is.
I remember when "mustangs don't have 4 poppers".
spongebob_meth@reddit
This makes you either very old or very young.
Most mustangs sold between 1974 and 1993 had 4 cylinders. There has been an available 4 cylinder for most of the mustang's life, and at several points in history the 4 cylinder turbo was the fastest trim.
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
This is all true, I'm just saying that there has always been an extremely vocal segment of the fanbase who are upset at any perceived change from their idea of "mustang".
I think the whining over the Mach E is 1:1 with that.
spongebob_meth@reddit
Whining about how many pistons the base engine has and making the damn thing an SUV are two very different things deserving of different criticisms
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
The SUV is an additional model, not a replacement, so no I disagree that there's any merit at all to the constant crying and moaning seen on this sub.
spongebob_meth@reddit
They should just call every model they make mustang. That's something i expect from a serious company, not one trying to sell gimmicky junk.
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
I honestly wouldn't be shocked if they make it a sub-brand.
99% of prospective buyers think "Mustang == sporty/stylish" and associate that with the moniker. The Mach E is an exercise in marketing, and I think it was the right move on Ford's part as I don't think a soul would've been interested in an electric Edge when the vehicle debuted.
spongebob_meth@reddit
A huge chunk of SUV shoppers don't want to be anywhere near something considered "sporty", and probably think that it's impractical and not able to drive in the snow
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
Sure, those shoppers can buy an Expedition or Bronco.
A huge chunk of SUV shoppers do want something sporty, which is why Ferrari/Porsche/Lamborghini all sell SUVs.
spongebob_meth@reddit
What if they want an electric SUV?
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
I'm lost? If someone wants an electric SUV, they can buy an electric SUV.
spongebob_meth@reddit
From Kia or audi or someone not trying to sell them something for boy racers.
Probably why they sell so many more of them.
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
Ford sold more than double the Mach-E's last year vs the Kia EV6.
spongebob_meth@reddit
Tesla model y then.
I assumed the Kia was outselling the Ford since I see them everywhere in my city, but maybe people here just hate Ford
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
Uh correct, the Mach E doesn't outsell the best selling vehicle in the world..... is this supposed to be an indictment of the car?
Ford made a good choice. The market has responded positively to the branding, a reasonable reaction to this does not consist of moving goalposts.
spongebob_meth@reddit
How are you measuring the market responding positively to the branding? They could have slapped the explorer badge on it and the sales would be the same.
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
It's one of the best selling EVs.
Pure speculation, and I strongly doubt this.
spongebob_meth@reddit
It's no more speculation than your opinion of its success.
The equinox outsold it last year and Tesla continues do just decimate Ford.
Honestly after pulling the numbers it is pretty clear that slapping mustangface on the soap bar wasn't a success since the equinox still moved more units despite sharing GM dealers with the blazer EV.
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
I did not share an opinion. And yes, you did speculate.
I get that you don't like the fact that it's called a mustang, but you've been reaching hard to find any way to say it's a failure.
This is wild at this point.
Cheaper car in a different size class with insane lease incentives outsells more expensive car. Yes? And even still, the Mach E is still sitting at #4 in US EV sales. How is this a "failure" in any way?
Tesla "decimates" every American OEM in the EV space. This is an odd attempt at a 'gotcha'. The Model Y did nearly 6X the volume of the Equinox EV/Mach E.
Here's the 5 best selling EVs in the us:
https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g64540955/bestselling-evs-2025/
Model Y: 317,800
Model 3: 172,800
Equinox EV: 57,945
Mach-E: 51,620
Ioniq 5: 47,039
So yes, it is Tesla and then everyone else is literally some multiple behind.
I'm not sure how this conclusion was reached.
The Mach E has been on the market for 4 model years now and is still sitting at #4 in a country that just disincentivized buying an EV.
It competes with the Blazer EV, which it sold more than 2X than. It's a size up from the Equinox. And the Mustang had to "share" Ford dealers with the Lightning, is that supposed to indicate some sort of disadvantage? None of these products cannibalize each other to any meaningful degree.
It's clear that the branding was a success. People are buying it, they seem to like it. Ford isn't a company that's hesitant to kill a product if they think it isn't doing well. The Lightning vastly outsold the Silverado EV last year (by more than double) and Ford still killed it to make it into an EREV.
You don't have to like it, but you cannot make an honest argument that it's a failure.
spongebob_meth@reddit
Nobody cross shopped the lightning and the other thing.
Lots of people do cross shop the equinox, bolt euv, and blazer.
I never said it was a failure. My point is that they could have called it the probe and it would have the same sales.
Thinking that the mustang name makes an SUV more attractive is an insult to the intelligence of the consumer. Nobody thinks they are getting a pony car when buying one of those things.
RangeRoverHSE@reddit
But they didn’t make the Mustang an SUV though, they made a Mustang SUV. I think that’s a very important distinction because crucially you can still get a V8, manual coupe or convertible if you want. This isn’t like Mitsubishi using the Eclipse name only on an SUV with no sport coupe alongside it, or Ford themselves making the Capri an EV SUV with no coupe version too.
spongebob_meth@reddit
It's every but as dumb as Mitsubishi throwing the eclipse name on that ugly thing regardless of them selling a couple version or not.
But let's be honest, the real damage was done by Mitsubishi 26 years ago when they dropped AWD and the 4g63 for a lame v6. Basically turning the eclipse into a base model 3000gt, but not even good looking.
TheMaddSage@reddit
But then again the Mustang is successful because of its body style and fan base. Otherwise it’s all pointless.
electromage@reddit
No, [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustang#/media/File:Mustanggelding.jpg) is a mustang.
CharlesP2009@reddit
The 1965 Mustang had a 2.8L I6 which made 100 horsepower lol. Might as well have a four popper.
hawkeyes007@reddit
I like it for the electric suv. But it pays no homage to an actual mustang
timelessblur@reddit
Minus it can leave most 2 door Mustangs in the dust off the line for the average owner. Remember EVs are always in launch control mode.
cpttucker126@reddit
It has the tail lights and a running horse on it!
Jokes aside. Yeah its just a electric SUV using the name to prop up sales during release. I'll be surprised if sales change between the two though once gas starts hitting 5+ dollars.
totamdu@reddit
I traded in my F150 for a used Mach E 6 weeks ago and love it.
pandaSmore@reddit
Too me it's a CUV. A true SUV will always be a enclosed body on frame vehicle using a truck chassis.
3MATX@reddit
No but it does take its design from the current Mustang. I think it’s a good idea to have a certain electric branded Mustang to eventually carry the name forward.
In a few decades I’d expect the gas Mustang sales to be limited to GT level and above while the “secretary level” ones migrate to hybrid or full electric along with the majority of the market.
septober32nd@reddit
Hey, it's got pony badges and tripartite tailights!
jammastergeneral@reddit
Who gives a shit? People aren’t buying it because of its name. There are many other reasons why it’s not selling.
electromage@reddit
Neither is a car.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
There were wagon and sedan Mustang concepts in the past, Mustang wasn't really intended as pony car only. That reasons are finally become a excuse for a Mustang crossover.
Phosphorus444@reddit
Escape EV.
happyevil@reddit
Eh that's not fair either. Having driven one it's definitely nicer than the escape in pretty much every way.
intertubeluber@reddit
Escape EV Platinum.
Skim003@reddit
It's probably more comparable in size to Edge. So it really should have been called Ford Edge Lightening
sc0lm00@reddit
Probably would have looked better as an updated Edge sans the mustang bits.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
Honestly it's not even the styling that I think is the problem, you could maybe leave the mustang tail lights or keep them, that's whatever.
But the choice to take a brand that has a half century of history associated with a two door sports car and throw that on a four door SUV is just wild. All for what? I doubt it helped sales at all. And now you have non car people genuinely confused as to what a mustang is or isn't.
timelessblur@reddit
Oh calling it a mustang increase sells. Hell I bought mine as with out mustang I most likely never would of gotten it.
Mustang put it on my radar and to me signal that Ford was not going to let it be some complanance car and would support it. I bought the car on its own merits. The mustang name just make me pay attention to it.
Now I only call it a Mustang when some one gets huffy and says not a mustang. 9 times out of 10 I call it the mach e.
Great car to drive. I have owned mine for 5 years now ans have put 55k miles on it. Zero regrets and gladly would buy another one to replace it.
JayDokkan98@reddit
Not a Mustang
I_luv_ma_squad@reddit
To be fair, I’ve never heard anyone refer to their Mach-E as a Mustang, just Mach-E.
Plastic_Bid5136@reddit
I drive a Mach E and call it Mach E. I never call my Mach E anything else.
m1a2c2kali@reddit
More like a 4 door wagon but point still applies lol
ixamnis@reddit
Lightning.
CG_Ops@reddit
Lightening... the appeal of the Mustang brand
Skim003@reddit
Yes lol. I'm blaming autocorrect
kingkalukan@reddit
Believe it or not, its internal dimensions are smaller than the escape.
Nhojj_Whyte@reddit
No, no. The Premium Escape trim is Titanium. The F-150s are Platinum.
Ironic, isn't it? The "manly" trucks are defined by a jewelry metal and the "mom car" SUV is defined by a strong, industrial metal.
davejugs01@reddit
Hey don’t forget the dementia version, “tremor”

Bearlodge@reddit
So a Mercury Mariner Mach E?
happyevil@reddit
Honestly bringing back a dead brand like Mercury to be a pure EV line is a good idea in my mind but you just know there are some hidden Mercury die-hards out there waiting to get angry for their ruined heritage.
mdp300@reddit
My mom had a 1990 and then 2002 Mercury. She'd probably be into new ones.
MarkMariachiAZ@reddit
Still not a mustang tho. Marketing really failed naming it that.
007meow@reddit
What is defined as a mustang?
MarkMariachiAZ@reddit
Mustang has always been a strong muscle car. Competitor to Chevy and Dodge. Mach E is a nice standalone car. Calling it a mustang takes away the history behind the car.
LordofSpheres@reddit
The Mustang was a pony car and mostly sold with autos and straight sixes for its early years. The Mustang II existed. The "history behind the car" has no problem with economically-minded family models.
AgentScreech@reddit
Whatever Ford says it is.
My Mach-E says Mustang Truck on the title.
My GT350 says Mustang Coupe on the title.
The Mach e is faster in a straight line than most "proper mustangs" until you get to about 100 mph.
They actually handle pretty decently too. If you compare it to any of the other SUVs by any other domestic provider, it is closer to how an actual two-door Mustang drives, than those.
If the Mustang II can be a mustang so to can the Mach-E
FrozenUruguayBallbac@reddit
or just call it mach e
happyevil@reddit
I agree, Mach-E alone is a pretty good name. They totally could have.
m1a2c2kali@reddit
Probably would have sold even less tho?
whores-doeuvres@reddit
Before they announced the MachE Ford trademarked "Model E". Why they didn't follow through with that is a mystery to me.
MumpsyDaisy@reddit
Calling it "Model E" sounds too much like a Tesla
flGovEmployee@reddit
That's probably the actual answer.
IMA_5-STAR_MAN@reddit
I haven't driven one but as far as EV's go they look awesome.
Equivalent-Battle973@reddit
Nahh the Escape at least has a better and taller trunk, I can easy fit a double wide BOB stroller in it.
Phosphorus444@reddit
Don't forget that Ford uses the Escape chassis for a bunch of models:
Escape, Mach E, Bronco sport, Maverick, all of their hybrid variants, and whatever foreign jalopies we aren't allowed to have.
mini4x@reddit
That platform. Started life as the Focus.
Equivalent-Battle973@reddit
lol Didnt know that, No wonder ford is cancelling the Escape.
RedditPoster05@reddit
Mach E
yourname92@reddit
It’s the escap-e.
SizeableFowl@reddit
Still a baffling name choice when Thunderbird was right there and literally no one would’ve cared if that nameplate was resurrected as an EV crossover.
strongmanass@reddit
Not a baffling choice when you read posts on EV forums where owners like the Mustang name on their electric crossover. Thunderbird wouldn't have had that effect. The Mustang name did exactly what it was supposed to.
And there are no ICE Mustang buyers who refused to buy it because the name is also on an EV CUV. So they gained EV buyers by using the nameplate while also not losing ICE buyers. There's an argument that it's anathema from a legacy perspective, but it's a marketing success.
SizeableFowl@reddit
I think it could have, its a pretty significant legacy name for Ford too.
This kind of administrative thinking drove me, personally, away from Ford’s showrooms and into Hyundai’s when I wanted to buy an EV. To be clear, I had been a pretty dyed in the wool Ford apologist. Prior to 2020, had only bought Ford products. I don’t know that you can make this claim about the Mustang let alone the rest of its products.
AwesomeBantha@reddit
They sell the Mach E outside North America. Europeans might have heard of the Mustang, but probably haven’t heard of the Thunderbird.
Fine_Abbreviations32@reddit
It’s not uncommon for the same car to be named differently in other markets.
by_a_pyre_light@reddit
Every European has heard of the Thunderbird after the disaster that was the final Brosnan James Bond film.
markeydarkey2@reddit
Thunderbird carries a long history but not to the (relatively) younger buyers they wanted to court with the Mach-E, especially since Ford cemented it as an Old Car Name with the boomer-bait 11th gen in the early 2000s.
Dredgeon@reddit
Same dorks that love their 2026 ralliart eclipse and GR RAV4s.
WonderWeasel91@reddit
I wouldn't say I like it having the pony on it, but I'll admit that after 15 years of Mustang ownership, I sat in one purely out of curiosity. Why did it deserve the Mustang name?
And then I loved it, so now I have one. It's a good EV, and a great car. It definitely has the spirit, but I wish they would have just implied Mustang inspiration with the styling and went with MachE for the name.
Mother____Clucker@reddit
100% agreed. Ford didn't name it in a vacuum. They did tons of market research before they even started design to incorporate Mustang styling cues.
TheMaddSage@reddit
In their release video for it, Ford themselves said the research groups they used reacted negatively to the name.
cubs223425@reddit
People definitely would have said something, even if it's way fewer people. The Eclipse Cross still gets the occasional joke about where its name came from. In part because of the Mustang Mach-e, people use "watch it get revived as an EV" as a pretty common joke whenever a car gets canceled (Camaro being the biggest one).
SizeableFowl@reddit
Thunderbird hasn’t really had an enthusiast interest for over 30 years. The people who owned and loved those cars then, are probably at the age where they’re looking for something that isn’t as low. It would have the benefit of not drawing the ire of current enthusiast, which functionally doesn’t exist, unlike the mustang.
cubs223425@reddit
Perhaps, but it's not like the Eclipse was an overnight change either. The Wagonneer alsop tried the move, and it was such a branding and pricing disaster they had to backtrack quite a bit.
That said, I do think people would be accepting of a Thunderbird revival. Its name would fit better with the EV transition, in the same way people were generally receptive of the F-150 Lightning's name on the EV model.
SockeyeSTI@reddit
I’ve heard it’s a fantastic vehicle but in no way is it a mustang
RacerM53@reddit
Falcon, Pinto, Fairmont
leftlanespawncamper@reddit
In philosophy, yes.
The original Mustang took a pedestrian commuter platform of its time and made it a bit more sport-feeling. People think of Boss 429s and GT350s when you say "Mustang", but a base Mustang was nothing more than a more stylish commuter designed to appeal to youth and women (new target markets in the early '60s).
The Mach-E took a pedestrian commuter platform of its time (now an EV crossover instead of a compact sedan) and made it a bit more sport feeling. The design and implementation decisions were based on it being a "Mustang", which made it a different car than if it had been designed as an Escape EV and then had Mustang badges slapped on it post hoc.
Does it fit the enthusiast idea of what a Mustang is? Absolutely not. But it does fit the same ideology that birthed the original Mustang.
pandaSmore@reddit
What makes it more sporty feeling?
TheMaddSage@reddit
They downvoted you because they don’t like anybody challenging the car. Even if it can be read that way.
BrewerAndHalosFan@reddit

caller-number-four@reddit
Between those brakes and regen, putting a GT into an emergency stop will make your head swim the first couple of times you do it.
cubs223425@reddit
Not that meaningful when you can find a bunch of EVs to do that. A 9,000-pound Hummer EV is faster.
Bludypoo@reddit
What a stupid comment
Aero06@reddit
The pedestrian commuter of the time would've been the Falcon on which the Mustang was based. The Mustang was deliberately separated into its own smaller, sportier, affordable two-door model to appeal to the youth and to make it a contender for Trans-Am SCCA racing. The Mach-E doesn't really follow that ethos at all outside of the vaguest superlatives.
UnknownColorHat@reddit
Its also taking the blows now as an EV so when the Fastback Mustang goes EV in the future, the purists will have chilled a bit. No other way the fastback lasts another 60 years.
kilertree@reddit
Yeah it's a Mustang. It was built so Ford Had environmental credits to build the V8 Mustangs. The reason why Dodge stopped making V8s was because they didn't have environmental credits.
xlb250@reddit
Ford has lost billions from the EV program. No way that is adding up anywhere near the credits to keep producing Mustangs.
kilertree@reddit
Dodge had to buy Tesla credits for their old V8s. Considering Ford didn't have to do that, and also didn't get fined the same way Stelantis did for not meeting CAFE I'm going to assume it worked out. Granted this is no longer an issue.

balthisar@reddit
I let my kids call it our electric Mustang, but I just call it a Mach E. I don't really care either way, and it's not a hill I'll die on. I will say, every time I visit Flat Rock, my adrenaline surges as I walk past all of the Mustangs in a way it doesn't surge with my Mach E.
Mach E #4 is on its way; I'm definitely not a hater!
itsnottommy@reddit
Not really, but the name generates free publicity and Mach E owners get to say “I drive a Mustang.” If they made the exact same car but called it the Escape EV or whatever, its launch would’ve generated little to no buzz and everyone would’ve already forgotten about it.
As stupid as it is, Ford was really smart to call it a Mustang.
jeebidy@reddit
Ford absolutely loves to just slap a well-known name on an unrelated car.

hewkii2@reddit
You can get a 1 year old car off of lease for 50% of retail price

mustangfan12@reddit
Mach E's don't depreciate that fast, they definitely lose $10k of value first year but not half off first year
caller-number-four@reddit
Mine would beg to differ.
My 2023 GT dropped around $20k in the first year I had it.
And that's AFTER Ford dropped the price hammer in late January 2024/Early Feb 2024.
The poor bastards that bought at 2023 (and prior) prices got F'ed hard.
My example when I test drove it in Nov of 2023 was $74k. In Feb 2024 I bought it for $51k. Within a few months it was in the low $30's.
If you believe the online value-o-meters.
jk147@reddit
How is the car? I am shopping around and can't decide between several brands, mostly Tesla Y, Ioniq, etc. Probably the same debate between all EVs shoppers.
caller-number-four@reddit
I have enjoyed it.
I think, with this car, you have to just sit back and relax when it comes to software updates. It'll update on it's on time and schedule. Once I did that, things were better.
My GT Performance Edition came with Pirelli summer tires. They lasted 7900 miles. I wasn't sad to see them go, they couldn't be driven under 45 degrees. And that was annoying.
The car is a roller coaster. Instant acceleration and just as quick stopping.
I find it comfortable and a 4 hour ride to the beach is ez-pz.
Many complain about the responsiveness of the screen, but I don't understand what they're looking at. Mine is crazy fast and I have no complaints.
My only real complaint is the door buttons. I hate them. I want normal standard issue handles. But, at least the inside features normal old school handles.
Ford also addressed issues where the 12v dies and then the doors quit working. They did that in my 2023 by keeping the primary battery online and available for 20-something-minutes after you turn the car off.
I, personally would never consider Tesla because of Musk, and they don't have Android Auto/Car Play.
I LOVE the look of the Rivians. But their dumb you must use your phone as a key and no Android Auto/Car Play is a non-starter for me.
I like the looks of the Ioniq. But I'd never buy a Hyundai/Kia. I've seen some pretty big issues on their EV's. Might want to look further into those before buying to see if the issues are as real as the internet makes them out to be.
The Caddy EV looks pretty good, but I don't know anything about it.
banned_from_r_cars@reddit
In 2019 I bought a 2018 Mustang GT for 29k, although it did have 30k miles on it. It's original sticker price was $54k.
I drove it for 2 years 25k miles and sold it for 29k lmao.
It isn't only EVs that lose crazy value, just depends on customer demands at the time.
mustangfan12@reddit
The convertible GTs definitely have really high depreciation, ive seen S650 convertible GTs that have lost $10-15k of value in just 1 year even with under 2k miles
The coupe GTs hold their values fairly decently though (as long as you don't go crazy with options)

Hell I got 11.5k off my Manual Dark Horse brand new
markeydarkey2@reddit
It's important to remember that MSRP and list/sell price aren't always the same thing. Depreciation is based off of the actual average sell price rather than MSRP. The domestics may set MSRP similar to e.g. Toyota but they plan-in discounts to increase margins when demand is high without loud visible price increases. Automakers like Toyota and Honda will usually sell around MSRP, Ford/GM/Stellantis usually sell below MSRP.
Ford has been running HEAVY promotions on Mach-E's for a few years now so the average transaction price is much lower than MSRP. New similarly equipped 2025 Mach-Es (lots of excess 2025MY stock) are listed for $44K around that zipcode. The CARFAX for that example says it was purchased new in March 2025, so real depreciation (~18%) was about average. Also.. look at the price history, the dealer raised the price $4K over the last month lol.

Sorry I’m lost. Gas is $1.15 more a gallon than it was a few months ago. Are people who would buy mustangs now not doing so because they don’t want to spend an extra $15 a week? Like it’s not that big of a deal and will likely come right back down in a few months.

Gas is not coming down anytime soon. This is like the 70s fuel crisis on steroids. There is a high likelihood there will be rationing at some point. Some countries already are.

It is true tho. Asia and Africa are already rationing gas. Europe cancles flights. The oil states have said repairing the infrastructure can take 2 to 5 years in some cases. Oil tankers on their way from the US to europe are turning around because china is now paying more for it.
Every expert on this topic warns that this can be many times worse than any previous energy crisis. 20% of global oil, 25% of global gas, a large portion of fertilizer and helium gas.
We are just getting started
linoleumknife@reddit
An Ecoboost Mustang also doesn't get terrible gas mileage. It's no Prius, but it's nowhere near as bad as a full size truck or SUV either.
Zaziel@reddit
The major fumble of Ford not using “Model E” naming that they own for their electric car is baffling to me.
Br0boc0p@reddit
Or Fusion. The nameplate was available and relevant.
strongmanass@reddit
I doubt that would have had a bigger impact than using the Mustang name. They weren't trying to be clever; they were trying to sell cars.
Tippyshortmouth@reddit
which clearly didnt work
strongmanass@reddit
It did work. The car's been on sale for 5 years. It got buyers' attention and drove early sales. The recent decline could be for any number of reasons, but it's definitely not because the Mustang name is on the car.
TheMaddSage@reddit
First 3ish years though it didn’t do that great. Then those incentives helped it for the last 2. Now it’s dropping like a rock again. Considering how much money they lost on each one it seems like it didn’t do that great.
XGC75@reddit
Pretty low-brow take, no? It's the 2nd best selling EV after the model Y and you can't put the capital expense to shift an entire business on the sale of each car - that's how you get "legacies" that don't survive the shift to electrification. Ford and others need to make massive investments to stay relevant at all, much less profitable.
TheMaddSage@reddit
Actually that would be a low brow take because you’re saying one thing and leaving everything else out. Yes it sold behind the model Y, and they sold well for 2 years with incentives….. but they lost a lot of money on each one per Ford, and now sales are falling again to about when the model started. I’m stating what’s happening, I didn’t say it was a bad car.
Now I think the new platform should do well, but we won’t know until that releases.
whores-doeuvres@reddit
It was the 2nd best selling electric car for a couple years (1st being the Model Y).
BraveFencerMusashi@reddit
Despite holding the trademark on Model E and the history of using Model something, most people attribute that naming convention to Tesla now.
Oo__II__oO@reddit
And Ford Model E could refer to their utility vans
servbot10@reddit
They instead used to to label their electric vehicle division
ob_knoxious@reddit
I'm surprised the gas mustang is going up because it's a very expensive car in a not very popular segment. Like from everything I've heard the S650 has been extremely disappointing
mustangfan12@reddit
Ford actually has some good lease deals now for the Mustang, perhaps that's helping drive sales up
ob_knoxious@reddit
That's good, I'm glad Ford is actually giving some reasonable deals out as opposed to choosing to have less sales by refusing to drop the price (new Z)
mustangfan12@reddit
Dealers are also giving discounts, but the cheapest way to get into a new Mustang right now is too lease it especially in todays high interest rate environment
Unfortunately Fords finance rate is %7.5, so you need to use a credit union for good financing
WonderWeasel91@reddit
No one's talking about how dealerships are entirely in control of how cars sell.
The Lightning and the MachE probably suffer from some branding and expense issues but at its core, dealerships don't want to sell EVs.
There's no ongoing maintenance package you can sell someone. There's no recurring revenue to be had with an EV. Hell, there's not a dealership in my area that has any sort of comprehensive EV service.
When I booked the 40k service for my car, which my Ford app told me to do, I couldn't select anything even close to accurate in their questionnaire for what I wanted looked at. I picked oil change.
And they didn't do anything to it. They asked me if they could change the cabin air filter, and there was nothing else they felt like they could work on.
mustangfan12@reddit
If dealerships don't want to sell EVs then why are they discounting them?
Dont get me wrong they are some dealers that don't want to sell them, but even with gas prices skyrocketing there's a ton of heavily discounted EVs for sale right now
JOmaster1234@reddit
Me too. Maybe it’s because the mustang is the only muscle car left. The Camaro is gone and the dodge charger is unattainable to your average buyer.
JerkyChew@reddit
I haven't followed it super closely but AFIAK the Mach E has had virtually no updates since its debut in 2019. Hard to get excited about a brand new 7 year old vehicle. Plus, used EVs are relatively cheap, and don't suffer the same performance loss as equivalent high-mile gas cars.
markeydarkey2@reddit
Ford gave the Mach-E a decent refresh for 2025 with a heat pump & switched from borg-warner electric motors to in-house designs. They also went to LFP for the SR versions & charging times improved for 2024.
semi_dry_towel@reddit
Generalizing here, but people buying sports cars are not going to be sensitive to gas price swings. Gas prices suck right now but it’s not going to deter people who want one
RiftHunter4@reddit
News outlets like to claim that gas prices heavily determine car purchases but that has never been true. If it was, pickup trucks would not be glued to the top of the best sellers lists.
Cars are mostly emotional purchases, not logical ones.
GermanCommentGamer@reddit
The Mach-E is one of the best selling EVs out there...
Bizaro_Stormy@reddit
My GT is surprisingly fuel efficient, I get 30 on the highway.
AllTearGasNoBreaks@reddit
Its only Q1 data, before the Iran stuff happened.
Vhozite@reddit
Honestly even if the data was current I’d be surprised to see a significant slump. Gas prices would need to remain higher for much longer before I’d expect it to start affecting Mustang sales.
Gas went up enough for me to notice but not enough for me to care lol
Caca_Face420@reddit
New Mustangs are more upstream than past ones. Americans want v8 gas guzzlers, not electric vehicles. Reddit wants to downplay it butMoney talks.
Thnowball@reddit
Guilty of buying a mustang this year, sry.
Mine's an ecoboost though. Hard to argue with 32mpg and 350hp after some basic mods.
mustangfan12@reddit
Im glad the V8 Mustang is selling well again, V8s are much better to drive than EVs are
fearyaks@reddit
I disagree as someone that's owned both. Obviously this is one guy's opinion but they are totally different vehicles and should be appreciated for what they bring to the table. But, if I could only have one, I'd say the Model S is still the best car I've owned.
For reference I've had a B6 S4 as well as a Beast (V10). (along with a Kcode 2+2). ICE cars are fun in a traditional way. Cornering in the S4 was insanely fun and having manual transmissions is great (unless you're in traffic). Paying at the pump was annoying but more annoying was even having to go to the pump.
For EVs, I've also owned a Model S (and an Egolf). Being able to charge at home, having instant torque. (generally) having a more reliable vehicle (there was a sweet spot in Tesla's history where they had good service and reliability).
banned_from_r_cars@reddit
Ditto, I still own a V8 BoF SUV but my last ICE car was a '18 Mustang GT with the performance pack.
I'll take my Tesla Model Y Performance over that Mustang 10 out of 10 times, especially as a daily or racing red light to red light.
Mustang made cool noises, but the MYP makes my head light when you floor it and I'm the one making the noises.
Does_Not_Use_Clothes@reddit
Thanks for the nuanced take /u/mustangfan12.
Haha no but you’re right!
Snoo93079@reddit
I don't have the data but I think far more EVs are sold than V8s
KyledKat@reddit
I wonder how many of the GT sales were converts from the Camaro and Challenger crowd. I’d also want to see the spread on Ecoboost and Coyote sales before we make sweeping statements about what Americans want, because the GT and I’ll have not been the volume sellers compared to fleet sales
RealDrGreen@reddit
It’s because of inventory, my dealer hasn’t even received any 2026 Mach E models at all yet
mustangfan12@reddit
In in the bay area and there's tons of 2026 models on the lot
RealDrGreen@reddit
Yes but it’s not surprising for overall sales to be low when they’ve just started to arrive in some states and we’re 5 months into the calendar year
drawmer@reddit
The Mach E is terrible looking and nobody asked for it.
Independent_Yak_9128@reddit
Just call it Mach E. No mustang involved For an EV it’s not bad, but it will NEVER EVER be a Mustang
PossibleHero@reddit
Soooo Ford released a new mustang and the Mach-E isn’t aging well against its competitors and we’re surprised by these numbers? Fairly obvious what’s driving this split.
Headlines like this are so lazy.
FledglingNonCon@reddit
Not to mention got $7500 more expensive at the end of September.
Anchor_Aways@reddit (OP)
The Mach-E wasn't eligible for the tax credit, it was built in Mexico
FledglingNonCon@reddit
Pretty sure it was North America, not just US. Pretty sure I remember it qualifying for at least part of the credit.
Anchor_Aways@reddit (OP)
The incentive only applied to the leasing which for some reason didn't have to deal quite the same sourcing requirements.
FledglingNonCon@reddit
The purchase tax credit required final assembly in North America (not US), but did have battery and minerals requirements. Basically all EVs qualified for leases because there was a separate commercial tax credit they qualified for with laxer requirements.
https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/credits-for-new-clean-vehicles-purchased-in-2023-or-after
donnysaysvacuum@reddit
Yeah this is a non story. I see Mach Es everywhere. They are selling fine. Just a dip from the tax break ending.
markeydarkey2@reddit
This is the biggest reason, the Mach-E isn't profitable for Ford while it's biggest competitors (Model Y, IONIQ 5, Equinox EV) are so they really needed the tax credit to be competitive.
CatoMulligan@reddit
I always thought that the Mach E was a decent looking EV, an one of the few I'd consider. I've been seeing them 2-3 years old for sale for under $25k, which sounds like a used car bargain. But then I looked at what a lease on a roughly $60k GT is being advertised at, and then compared it to an Optiq and a Lyriq with the same term and mileage. The Mach E ended up being the highest of the three, by over $100. No matter how nice it is, the Lyriq is better looking, more comfortable, has better tech, and probably performs comparably.
iamr3d88@reddit
On top of that, there are no 2026 Camaros or Challengers. Of course sales spiked when choice is removed. Wouldn't be surprised if subaru sold more STIs in 2016 when the Evo died too.
TheMaddSage@reddit
When Ford released the new Mustang the Mach E was leading. Lol.
mini4x@reddit
Drop the rebate on EVs and this is where it goes.
Apical-Meristem@reddit
I think people are looking at it the wrong way. Mach E decreased by 50% because the effective price jumped by $7,500.
bwoah_gimmethedrink@reddit
Stop comparing the two. They've got nothing in common.
Nefilim314@reddit
Christ yes. Zero people are cross shopping the two.
“Chevrolet Trax sold more units than the Chevrolet Corvette. The v8 is dead!” is what this tells us.
StatedFailure@reddit
Agreed. I have one. I don't call it a mustang mach e. I just call it a mach e when talking to people. And I would never buy a gas mustang or even a true coup or sedan EV mustang.
I do think this whole "it's not a real mustang" is just a stupid ass argument to drive up visibility and word of mouth.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
Yes, but imagine if GM named the Trax something ridiculous like "Corvette super utility".
Ford did this to themselves.
ducky21@reddit
Y'all are more insufferable than my friends who freak out because of the label on a handbag.
Some dudes in a conference room decided to slap some labels on it. Who cares what its called? Why can't we just appreciate what the thing is without worrying constantly about the plastic stickers on the back?
Is the Probe a better car because it wasn't called a Mustang? Is the Mach-E worse because it was? Does it truly matter to you? It genuinely doesn't matter at all to me.
noSSD4me@reddit
I care what it's called, who are you to tell me what not to care about?
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
I'm often surprised by people's ability online to completely misinterpret a conversation everyone is having, but this is really taking the cake lol.
Ford chose to call the car a mustang, so people are going to compare it to mustangs, that wouldn't have happened if Ford had chosen literally any other name.
I meet people who aren't in to cars that get so confused by the Mach E thing that they think Ford stopped making mustangs and turned them all in to SUVs. It wasn't a particularly smart marketing strategy.
But go off king, throw a tantrum about how insufferable anyone who points out that branding choices have consequences are lol.
ducky21@reddit
Are you a car person or a marketing strategy person?
I understand that you and /u/Hamb_rglar are marketing strategy enthusiasts, but my interests in marketing strategies ended when I finished Mad Men. I care about cars and driving cars.

Is this that confusing for you my dude? Is it weird that car people would have a conversation around confusing branding and marketing?
What's got you this upset lol?
ducky21@reddit
I'm just baffled that someone is shaking at rage like you are, all because you're just OBSESSED with what the tag on your ~~designer purse~~ car says.
You've made two incredibly aggressive replies to me all because I had the AUDACITY to tell you you're wildin' out for being way more interested in BRANDS than anything about actually driving the car.
They could call it a Ford GT Mach-E Raptor for all I fucking care. It's a really pleasant golf cart and my mom enjoys hers, and I've enjoyed driving it to the grocery store. But please, by all means, you should continue your conversation about badges, Badge Enthusiast.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
Shaking in rage? Obsessed? Aggressive? My man are you okay?
You rolled in calling people insufferable and throwing a whole tantrum over someone suggesting that using the name Mustang for an SUV wasn't a great choice. You're out here throwing insults left and right, calling everyone names, cursing everyone out, and like generally showing a complete lack of basic literacy.
Turn the computer off and take a breath my man.
ducky21@reddit
Literally every single reply to me from you is some variation of a brain-dead "u mad bro" post. Is that all you can do? Have I been trying to squeeze interesting conversation from an AI stone?
When? When did I insult anyone, aside from you? When did I curse at anyone in this thread? I didn't, because I don't.
Take your own advice.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
I hope things get better for you my man, take care.

thefanciestcat@reddit
EV that becomes a more questionable value with time vs the only choice left in its segment.
FourEyesAndThighs@reddit
The Mach-E has not had any significant updates in six model years, other than a slight range increase and increase in charging speed. I am not surprised to see sales floundering.
SwarmOfRatz@reddit
2024 has basically completely different motors and batteries. The 2025 added a heat pump and a bunch of other stuff

CarpeNivem@reddit
Are we really comparing gas to EV here? They're entirely different cars.
That said, it's interesting coupe/convertible sales are up and SUV sales are down, at least with regard to this particular coupe/convertible and this particular SUV, but that's all this story is.
I_am_-c@reddit
Some of that is due to the value proposition of a new MachE.
Try to find a used MachE... they are scrapped up instantly once that big artificial premium is wiped away.
Ftpini@reddit
That simply won’t hold. With gas prices boosting month over month with no signs of slowing down. Gas vehicle sales are going to face some serious headwinds.
Uptons_BJs@reddit
Honestly, get the Mach E if you’re just looking for a daily driver, especially if you’re in Canada. Over here Mach E available for like, $100/week on a lease.
That’s how much a tank of gas costs up here nowadays haha
fallinouttadabox@reddit

I mean, that’s just what the flyer I saw - technically there’s a small difference due to amortization with weekly, biweekly, and monthly.
The local dealer is trying to show off that a mach e is the price of a tank of gas a week, which is reasonable considering that I just paid \~2.10 per liter of 91.

Baby-girl-54321@reddit
Not really surprising tbh.
People who want a Ford Mustang are buying it for the sound and feel. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is decent, but it’s just not the same vibe.
Plus calling a crossover a Mustang still feels kinda weird to a lot of people.
Yummy_Castoreum@reddit
AFAIK, Ford hasn't recently updated the Mach E (other than to de-content it) or lowered the price, while competitors have done both.
FourEyesAndThighs@reddit
It got a slight increase in range and charging speed a couple of years ago, and that's it. It's not competitive against a Model Y or the Hyundai/Kia twins.
metallicadefender@reddit
Its a Mach..... E!!!
The Mach line.

I do not understand anyone who would buy an electric cae brand new, with the huge depreciation that these have. At least when you had the government credits made sense.
SnowDucks1985@reddit
Wow Ford is in free-fall 💀 I think they should cut their losses and discontinue the Mach-E, I doubt it’ll rebound with other automakers entering the EV space.
It’s very nice to see the Mustang doing well, but my theory is it’s benefiting from not having any direct competitors anymore. Once the Camaro comes back on the scene, I could see the numbers taking again
TheMaddSage@reddit
This is what I’m saying. Cut out the Mach E, push the new EV platform without Mustang branding. Give them a fresh start
Guy4123123@reddit
I like the way the Mach E looks on the outside at least. We would have gotten a Mach E GT to sit next to the a Shelby instead of an EV6 GT but my wife hated the interior and gigantic iPad stuck to the dash look. I'm not a fan of the copy cat tesla setup either.
NateHatred@reddit
Apples are up, oranges are down!
FreshStartLiving@reddit
What were the numbers like in 2025? With the actual Mustang stop sale for a while and the expiring EV tax credit, I'd bet over the last 2 year, Mach-E is probably still in the lead but I'm too lazy to look up the #s. I'd also lean towards EV sales picking up steam now compared to say 3 months ago. Even most EVs, regardless of gas prices, sales exploded due to the tax credit and now meh due to no tax credit. Tons of people leased/purchased an EV last year. Doubt they need a new anything right now. I'd said this data is meaningless.

khamir-ubitch@reddit
That's because in most people's eyes the Mach-E is NOT a Mustang as most people know it. The Mustang is the ORIGINAL pony car.
In my opinion, Ford really besmirched the Mustang name and legacy by putting it on an electric powered hatch back and trying to pass it off as Mustang.
Nope.
