ULPT Shaved my head at 24 (alopecia), how to handle office reactions?
Posted by Ybalance@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 197 comments
Hey everyone,
I’m 24 and dealing with androgenic alopecia, mostly thinning at the crown. I shaved my head today and started treatment (min + fin).
Now I’m just feeling nervous about going to the office, people are definitely going to notice and ask, especially since I had good hair until recently.
For those who’ve been through this, how did you deal with the questions or attention?
Thanks!
milenpatel@reddit
I did this 5 weeks ago. Super tired of my hair loss. Ended up loving it!! I was so nervous for going into work but everyone was so chill about it. I wouldn't worry too much unless you work with AHs
undecidedremedy@reddit
I have the same!! I have been shaving my head for about 7 years. I actually was wearing wigs before I shaved but I also went from having like no hair to one day coming in with a beautiful mane. The only people who said anything to me were close coworkers and I was just honest “I have alopecia and it was too much and wrecked my self esteem so I shaved my head and I’m wearing wigs now.” That was as much as was asked/said and I’ve been in peace about it since.
silverraider32@reddit
You can get an exception to wear baseball caps or some type of hat, that’s what some guys from work did that have it.
DickensYermouth@reddit
Pretend you're new and don't know who they think you are. Invent a whole new persona. If they keep calling you by the "wrong" name threaten to report them to HR.
That's the unethical answer. The sensible answer is to tell them you have alopecia and were losing your hair. It's a genetic condition, not some embarrassing faux pas on your part. Only a real asshole would treat you any differently because of it.
nogardleirie@reddit
Since this is ULPT, tell everybody you had head lice and this was the easiest way to get rid of the.
Bails3857@reddit
Got his crabs finally treated and didn’t want to risk them migrating north
zippychick78@reddit
And then start scratching your head and watch for reactions 😂
Squard@reddit
If that doesn't work scratch your armpits. Scratching your crotch might trigger a call from HR.
Squard@reddit
Do this while scratching your head.
If you want to be extra effective, scratch your armpits and crotch
InclinationCompass@reddit
I presume Op will continue to stay bald. You can’t say you have lice forever. If I was Op, I would just be honest. Many balding men do shave it anyway.
latigidigital@reddit
Nah, just progressively get longer wigs. Start with something extremely short (even if it takes a makeup artist or blowing vacation days) and then work your way up to a normal head of hair. Or just own the shit and be like “I look better than Vin Diesel.”
nogardleirie@reddit
This is ULPT so OP should make up wilder and wilder stories
InclinationCompass@reddit
It’s not really a tip if people don’t believe you though
popkiwibanana@reddit
Then scratch your scalp to really sell it
followupquestion@reddit
Head lice? You’re thinking too ethical. Now if they were pubic lice (crabs), and maybe you wink at anyone who asks…
iamofnohelp@reddit

Easiest way to get rid of your co-workers too then!

Ok. This made me laugh and is spectacular.

You can make up a funny story about how you caught them off your five year old nephew or something like for extra ULPT

Just say you lost a bet. If they ask, don't elaborate, just say you keep your word.
You will be cooler person, plus some positive reputation, because you honored your end of the bargain.
TheAmazingWan@reddit
Honestly I have heard far less bald jokes since I shaved my head. It’s weird. To answer your question I’d just find whatever physical flaws others have and be prepared to bring them up. I had a fat guy harassing me one time until I told him that I was going to only refer to him as Titties and he just wanted to be my friend after that.

moonplanetbaby@reddit
Well first of all, you didn't ask for this to happen, circumstances beyond your control. Take the "mystery" out of it for anyone asking. Explain what alopecia is, it's NOT CONTAGIOUS, they can't catch it, and you didn't choose this. If ANYONE teases you, makes you feel bad, etc. because they're ALWAYS HUGE ASSHOLES who have to go there, turn to them and in calm control, with confidence, get very close to their face and softly tell them, they are blessed they don't have this as well and should be thankful for that blessing. Alopecia can happen to anyone at anytime, yes there is some heredity involved, but extreme stress can also initiate it on anyone at anytime.
You own this, be strong and stand up with confidence.
WolfenSatyr@reddit
So many ways to make people uncomfortable...here's some one line replies:
"Your mom thinks I'm handsome" "Your sister kept pulling my hair asking if I liked it" "Never make a deal with a Houdon priestess" "It's aerodynamic" "Brain keeps overheating" "Couldn't wash the blood out of it" "Never fall asleep while chewing gum" "New hair color, glossy breeze shine" "Do you know what Trichophagia is?" (Bonus points if you burp) "It was stolen, can I have yours?" "Needed to know what my cat feels when it coughs up a hairball" "I've been putting a hair in the boss's coffee everyday, need a new plan"

So this isn't exactly related to your question, but I feel like I should at least say something, seeing as you're still so young. Make sure you know the full risks of finasteride. I didn't when I started taking it and I got to learn them firsthand, without even knowing it was an option.
Basically, it can remove your sex drive, fully and for an unknown amount of time or permanently. They don't know why, or how to fix it. It was denied to even be a 'real thing' until recently. They've coined the condition "post finasteride syndrome". Thankfully for me, it came back after several years of various states of broken and many experimental things, but some never get that at all.
Note I tried it around your age range, and I tried topical, which was touted to be "less risky and much less likely to have side effects" - and while I knew sexual side effects could occur, the warnings seemed to assure that they would only be temporary and you could just stop. I noted some minor ones, as expected, that worsened, and I stopped - that's when things really fell out (this does not seem unusual for people suffering this). Worst part is, it wasn't the hardware that was broke, so to speak, the "software was missing" but everything still worked.
You make your choices, and I can't say I wouldn't have still used it (it was pushed to me as a preventative versus a repair), but I wish I would have at least been told the full possibility and extent of the risks before going on it.
Innovator-X@reddit
I am 20 and considering finesteride. I heard the negative effects affect only a small number of people. What do you think?
chris14020@reddit
Even as someone who was one of the "small amount" of people, I'd say that's likely true. I couldn't tell you how many a "small amount" is, and they seemed adamant on not accurately track or even acknowledge this, so that is a big red flag. But I'd guess it's single digit percents or less. Still, even if we assume 1% or 0.1%, how lucky do you feel about possibly being the 1 in 100 or 1 in 1000 that will never be able to have a typical romantic / sexual relationship again, that will never be able to feel that "spark" of sexual arousal, with no guarantee that it will ever come back and the possibility that once you realize something is wrong it's already far too late to fix?
Don't get me wrong, I also hated the idea of losing my hair - enough that I tried this before even losing it, pushed as a "preventative measure". But sitting here realizing I easily could have spent the largest part of my adult life stripped of the ability to have and enjoy any sort of enjoyable sexual encounter made me realize just how huge a toll on a relationship or even just social life and personal wellbeing that could have had (and did take, for a while).
Just consider what you could more live with - some hair loss (especially if it is minimal or you're not particularly predisposed to hair loss genetically) or permanent inability to feel any sexual desire (and I mean any, like prepubescent levels of "it just is not there"), and if you're willing to risk that even at low odds.
Innovator-X@reddit
I definitely wouldn’t risk my sexual energy to get my hair back but man I do wish I get my hair back so bad. I have questions (you are free to not answer anything at all so no pressure):
I really believe that you did not lose your sexual energy just like that. There must be something wrong. I talked to a doctor once and he said that even if finestride was to reduce T levels, the effect will be temporary and can be reversed most definitely. I dont know if he is lying to me or not, but this is just my 2¢.
chris14020@reddit
I am otherwise in very good health, and was the whole time - not overweight, I'm active as a career, et cetera. I'd never had sexual issues prior, ever, then started fin and bam. Pretty obviously directly correlated, right down to "the real bottom fell out moment came when I stopped", as so many others also described. I'm now in the same condition as I was, just a bit older, and right back to where I was. I was fine, I took finasteride then I wasn't fine, I stopped taking it then eventually was fine again. Pretty straightforward with one major change.
I don't know why you think I'd want to possibly "test" something again that broke me for years just for months of topical usage (that I was led to believe wasn't less risk), wondering if I'd ever be my old self again, something that they're only just recently finally even admitting is a real thing and still have put little to no effort into figuring out why their drug causes this. I could have not recovered ever the first time even - some don't, and nothing is promised. That seems like a no-brainer not to gamble with it again.
Your doctor might not even know about the possibility of permanent side effects - the company and everyone else desperate for hair loss solutions denied it and pretty much gaslit anyone that suffered these results as long as possible, and it's only been recently that they've even admitted it can happen and acknowledged it being correlated. Mine didn't know, until I had it happen to me. I had to do the "finding out about it" myself after it only got worse, and persisted even months after. Even despite hormone therapy, despite tests looking normal.
You're welcome to also deny it, if it makes you feel better - the company did for years, and the community desperate for hair loss solutions still insist on my experience not being real. And you can say it has to be "something" with me. It may be - perhaps genetics, who knows. But when even they don't know what that "something" is, do you feel lucky enough that that "something" isn't wrong with you too? Your call call.
Innovator-X@reddit
Damn, that sounds scary as fuck. Thank you for the heads up. Hope things turn a lot better for you.

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this.
I recently shaved my head because I felt like it. The first day in office afterwards (big fancy corporate finance firm) everyone was so hyped about it. It was startling how many people complimented my hair and didn’t pry.
If your office situation is more on the nosey end of the spectrum, you might get extra questions but I would just say “personal and/or medical reasons” depending on whether or not you think they would pry further.
You might be surprised at how well everyone responds to your new look!
AGenericUnicorn@reddit
Same here - I’m female and I did it during the COVID lockdown because I wanted to see what it was like (I loved it).
So I just told people that - that I wanted to.
Reactions are mostly positive, but apparently there’s an ongoing rumor in my neighborhood that I had cancer. I don’t care about that assumption, but I do feel bad for people who do it because of chemotherapy. It made me feel bad, like I was getting pity I didn’t deserve.
But anyway, the buzz cut life…I miss it all the time.

Tell them you had to shave your head because the conductive gel that you put on before your tinfoil hat wasn’t fully penetrating your scalp like it needed to.
macetheface@reddit
A coworker that sits near me did the same recently. He grew out his monster beard to compensate. No one cares and the ones that do, fuck em

I donated around six feet of hair last year, so you can imagine the change.
I just told people I felt like it, and that was that.

Draw a face on the back of your head and tell them you're hosting the Dark Lord until he gains the strength to return to his own body
killerjags@reddit
Threaten to report your coworkers to HR if they ask about it. "YOU CAN'T ASK ME ABOUT MY HAIR! THAT'S HARASSMENT!"
You can also stock up on piss discs for anyone who is particularly nosy.

I got really drunk last night. I made a bet and I lost.

I'm a woman who shaved my head in my 30s in support of someone going thru chemo. I walked into my office, (finance oriented), explained the situation and that was that. It was no biggie. I live on the west coast of the USA. Down south or upscale NYC might be different.

Say 'why do you ask?' and try and shame those nosey bastards
Remarkable-Ad2285@reddit
I was buzz cutting my head for months before I shaved clean. Using a baseball cap during the day for sun exposure. In hindsight I think it helped transitioning so I didn’t get any, “why’d you shave your head?” questions.

Tell everyone you now sexually identify as Lex Luthor.
If they give you shit about it tell them they can play Superman and to come over at 9pm

Print off some trifold brochures about the issues but have it also imply that the reader is an intrusive prick. Hand them out to anyone who comments

Didn’t you do one of those shave-your-head-in-solidarity things for your cousin with leukemia?

Tell your coworkers your hair was thinning and it was time, and then make a comment to them about how it's coming up on time for them, too.

I went bald at 19 and have shaved my head all my life. I've never had an issue? Why would you :s
magseven@reddit
I think this product will provide solutions for you.

Just say you are balding and it didn’t look good anymore 🤷
PyllynKaivelija@reddit
Fortunately they'll ask and make a fuss about it only once so make the reveal first thing in the morning to get it out of the way. If you want you can tell them the reason or you can just say you did it "just because" and offer no more info and go on about your day
samlir@reddit
Are you sure you really had a problem or are you letting looksmaxxers lot you into shaving your head?

Why'd you post here? Just tell em it was getting thin up top and it was time to take matters in your own hands. Or maybe it's time for a few piss disks?

I’d be honest, but I am a chronic oversharer.
