Reminder as someone who has a shit ton of these boxes and noticed the change the last sale.
There are apparently two versions of this being sold and they have a slightly different shade of green between the two.
Always open the ammo box to look at the seal and make sure the indentation is centered and that it at least appears watertight.
I'm not a hardcore prepper, I just like to store my ammo loose to take up less space and these are a good and cheap way to do it.
Doogiemon@reddit
The person who worked there asked me what I was doing and I told them this and they said in transit, they probably had a heavier pallet stacked on top of them and it pressed down very hard which really ruins that waterproof gasket.
He said I could return anyone that was ever damaged and they would exchange it with no questions asked at all if I ever purchased a damaged one.
brokenaxle69@reddit
This also happens even easier with MTM plastic style (why I changed back to metal cans). I only stacked a few fully packed cans and the weight smoked the lids and seals. This was detected with color changing desiccant packs.
1rubyglass@reddit
Harbor freight is the costco of tools. Dont like it? They will make it right without a hassle.
TheSlipperySnausage@reddit
I mean they are probably making 80% margin on it so for keeping customers it’s very easy to do a quick replacement. It’s an amazing business model
freudmv@reddit
I just exchanged a complete 64 piece socket set because the 3/8” driver had lost the bearing that holds the sockets on. I purchased it last December. Easy exchange and I was thinking I’d have to buy another driver but they exchanged the complete set. I did have a copy of my emailed receipt. YMMV.
LoudChocolate6290@reddit
any way you can take a picture of what youre talking about for us stupids?
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
Just look at the indentation in the seal in the lids. Some have more of a mark than any real indentation in the black seal. That means the lid is not pulling in far enough all the way around the lid to provide an airtight seal.
The other issue is the indentation in the seal may be on the very outer edge of the seal in some area of the seal rather than centered in the seal. This is because these cheap ammo cans made in China and Vietnam have sides that bow out a lot.
I put 1/2" of water in some ammo cans in which I discovered the color indicating rechargeable gel beads turned from orange to black while the beads in other ammo cans was still orange. I put the can upside down and notice water leaking out from a corner of both ammo cans.
In the past I put some rocks in ammo cans to weight them down and put some rock on top of them while they were placed in a 5 gallon bucket of water. I check for water inside the cans after say 15 minutes. This was a hassle compared to just putting water inside and turning the cans upside down to confirm leak.
Last year I examined about 50 of the 50 cal ammo cans at HF and only found 4 or 5 to meet my standards. At Rural King I when through more than 50 ammo can and only found about 2 to be acceptable. They sell them in tan, black and green colors. The green can were so consistently bad regarding the seals that I stopped checking them after see that 20 or more all had the same poor seal. The seals in the black and tan can varied much more. I suspect the green can were processed on a different manufacturing line or plant where the equipment was more out of spec.
I think the quality of the sealing of these cans has gotten much worse in the last few years.
Trope360@reddit
Funny enough, this has been a thing for the past year at least. I noticed this as well, and luckily have a few around me. I also forget which color was better, but the main thing is look down into the corners inside - some are "filled" in with solder more or less. Always ask as they usually have more in the back if you can't find good ones, inspect each one.
Lopsided-Library1119@reddit
45% of $20 is $9, so they will be $11 each.
Trope360@reddit
so it is true if you want the correct answer on social media, you simply state the wrong answer and there will be a multitude of people to jump down your throat. Like clockwork young dorothy...
Lopsided-Library1119@reddit
All I did was correct your math, didn’t say anything else. Purely factual. I was also the first person to correct it.
Weird that you took my comment personally. Maybe double check your basic arithmetic next time if your feelings are going to get hurt?
If this was jumping down your throat, I can only imagine how you handle the stresses that life throws at you 😂
Trope360@reddit
lol an essay of a response in your own reflection. I'm just here to have fun, and this was hilarious, thanks.
Lopsided-Library1119@reddit
Makes sense, simple pleasures for simple minds. Have fun with those big feelings of yours 😘
Trope360@reddit
hahaha don't stop, you're almost winning son. What else ya got?
Lopsided-Library1119@reddit
I don’t know, anymore basic equations that you botched? Want me to proof read your English homework as well? I’m sure based off this conversation you have plenty of mistakes that need correcting 😂
Oh right, they don’t teach English in Clown Scool 🤡
Trope360@reddit
How would you know they don't??

Remainder is .55. .55 of 10 is 5.50, then times 2 is 11. Therefore, .55 of 20 is 11......
Trope360@reddit
ah yes I was doing *.65 last night half asleep, cheerio mate
norightsbutliberty@reddit
I am not a fan of the HF metal cans. The ones Cabelas sells are much higher quality and probably the minimum you should actually buy. I don't trust these to be/stay properly sealed, and if they aren't properly sealed you may as well use cheap containers.
Tyzorg@reddit
I checked these out in person a few months ago (not related to the sale) and saw they are (obviously, but some may not know) knock-off ammo cans and not real "Mil spec" and felt extremely cheap to me and the seal looked like sh*t. I saw a comment in here where they said some were good some were bad so your results may vary but don't expect a 1:1 copy of a milspec can that you saw at the surplus store. (Thinner metal.. crappy hinges..crappy seal) YOUR RESULTS MAY VARY. Just commenting MY experience.
I just googled surplus ammo cans and if you google "Ammo can man" there's a site by that name and also a amazon store. I'm not affiliated with them nor have bought from them but that's an alternative for people wanting the "real" thing. (I'm sure there's plenty of other sites as well)
Happy shooting and prepping!
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
Many of the $10 - $11 on sale 50 cal ammo do not have an airtight seal. So the desiccant gel beads will need to be recharged frequently or replaced if it is not rechargeable. They are all made in either Vietnam or China. They do not have the feature that prevents the seal from being damaged when stacked. I have seen the same poor seal issues with can from Rural King and Harbor Freight. I have not examined any can sold by Tractor Supply but I have read negative feedback on the quality of them.
killyourmusic@reddit
I just bought two metal .50 cal boxes (for the same price using a coupon) but now I'm wondering if I should return them for the plastic boxes. How do they compare? I'd like to save $10 if there isn't much difference.
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
Some may get lucky and get a plastic ammo can that has an airtight seal but I never did as the plastic seems to flex too much. I use the steel 50 cal ammo cans for long-term ammo storage with a desiccant bag inside. I use one 50 cal sized plastic ammo can for hauling my bipods, chronograph, and a few other things to the range and then use the small 30 cal plastic ammo cans to carry ammo I'm going to shoot at the range within the next few months.
chinchilazzz@reddit
Do you have to replace the desiccant packs yearly or so? I need to order a bunch. I have the reusable ones in my safe that change color and then you bake them on a baking tray to dry them out again.
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
No, you can rejuvenate it if you buy rechargeable desiccant . Eventually it will need to be replaced. I don't want to have a leak in a can that requires frequent refreshing of the desiccant and wears it out fast. I bought the following on Amazon. I comes with some bags.
Search Amazon or elsewhere with similar description:
Desiccant Beads – 6.5 LBS Silica Beads with Orange Indicating Silica Gel, Premium Silica Gel Beads 3-5mm Industry Standard, Rechargeable Desiccant Used for 3D Filament, Electronic Tool, Safe
You can buy smaller quantities but the cost per ounce will be more. You want to make sure it is free of cobalt. I bought extra 5"x7" cotton mesh bags as the 10 bags included with my order were not nearly enough bags. I would recommend smaller bags such as 4"x6" bags. The sheer plastic mesh bags allow me to see the color of the beads without opening the draw string and they take up less room in the ammo cans.
My first order of the gel beads was in October of 2024. I have not yet needed to recharge the beads in ammo cans that have an airtight seal.. Those beads look like new. I don't know how many times the beads can be recharged before they fail. I did have a few beads remain black in each bag I had to recharge due to leak in about 3 steel ammo cans and 4 small ammo cans I got from Freedom Munitions. These plastic ammo cans have stiffer sides than the 30 cal HF ammo cans but they still were not airtight. I no longer use any plastic ammo cans for long term storage.
Maxasaurus@reddit
The metal ones are far superior in durability
LostWanderer576@reddit
I've heard they are not stackable bc of handle. Easy fix though
ServileLupus@reddit
Like everyone else has said, metal for long term. But honestly, plastic for the range. No need to lug around the extra weight. Pop open the steel can, throw the ammo you want to use in a smaller plastic one that will fit in your range bag. I'd go smaller than a .30 honestly. Can easily fit 500+ loose 9mm in a really small can or a ton of 5.56 in 20/30rd boxes.
SpeedySpooley@reddit
The plastic boxes are really only good for light duty use. I only use them to store charging cables, smaller stuff; etc.
Using them as ammo boxes taught me that the clasp is a serious weak point. They fly off easily under load.
Xyes@reddit
I would only trust the plastic cans to hold brass.
BilboDabinz@reddit
Metal > plastic every time. The handle is the weak point if you’re carrying ammo.
I_Support_Ukraine_@reddit
The plastic are much lighter duty for usage and holding the weight of ammo...keep the metal for more important things and use the plastic for gloves and lightweight transport/storage
lensiky@reddit
Is there a limit?
Little-Historian-850@reddit
Is this in store as well?
Omniposter@reddit
i've only personally ever seen the ammo box deals in-store. Makes sense. These would be a pain to ship.
you_killed_my_@reddit
I've had both the plastic and metal boxes shipped to my house for 8 bucks
LilGayKIdd@reddit
Would be funny af if they just slapped some Harbor freight tape to close the cover and put a shipping label on the side.
Omniposter@reddit
Lol I wouldn't be that surprised
nsgiad@reddit
Today's deal is in store only, they might all be that way

Plastic .30 Cal is also free item May 8-10. From my experience the grey ones have been solid and any other color has the latch caved in and doesn’t seal at the front.

They also have the Quinn Torque Driver on sale for $60, only good up to 50in-lb but perfectly suited for gun accessories if you dont have one yet
srryimtaken@reddit
How does the Quinn torque driver compare to a wheeler FAT wrench?
55thParallel@reddit
My wheel fat wrench has been nothing but disappointing
Bubbly-Celery-4096@reddit
I like the split beam, don’t have to reset to 0 after each use.

Highly recommend it. Check near you as in warehouse prices are usually cheaper than online. Bought mine for 590
Bigred2989-@reddit
I got a similar one from Costco, had an issue where the computer (a small circuit board really) for the lock died, but got it replaced under warranty easily. They sent me the replacement and I was able to swap it out in a few minutes. Comes with backup physical keys as well so you won't be completely locked out.
Always_the_NewGuy@reddit
Keep an eye on Tractor Supply Co. They have sales on safes frequently.
Free_Mathematician24@reddit
Second this. My whole family bought ours from TD
TheSlipperySnausage@reddit
3rd this. Winchester 36 gun delivered sub $500. They are constantly rotating what’s on sale for the Winchester just have to wait for your size to go on sale which usually rotates weekly
06_TBSS@reddit
This. My brother and I both bought Winchesters from there and are thrilled with them.
jackfinished@reddit
a few options: Buy used (marketplace, whatever) and have a locksmith swap out the lock. Talk to a locksmith, i know a few and they sometimes buy from them privately after a divorce or death. Also I know carpenters that have them from remodels? I guess people are lazy and clean them out and then don't want to move them.
