certain names sound awkward in Slavic languages, such as Ali (which in Serbo-Croatian, at least, means "but"). So, among Muslims, it's lengthened to Alija, which, even though it's grammatically feminine, is used as a masculine name.

Both a girl and a boy name, but the accent is different. It's more common as a boy name, I've only heard of a few older women called Alija (Usually spelled with a j)

Alija was my grandfather’s name. If i ever have a daughter, I would love to name her after him. I live in a country where Alija would be considered a feminine name.
