I was more of a NBA Live 95/96 guy myself, but mostly only because my friend had it on the Genesis and we had fun playing it together. The video games were kind of fun, but beyond that I had no interesting in basketball.
In the 90s, I felt like there was a disproportionate amount of merchandise for the Charlotte Hornets, Georgetown Hoyas, and the Michigan Wolverines compared to their respective popularity of those teams.
It was as if they accidentally made twice as much apparrel for those teams that every kid had them once they went on clearance.
Yet most people didnt even watch or like the hornets but the jacket was still the coolest, heck i had a hornet shirt i loved but never watched a single game lol
Holy shit playoff hockey is insane lol. Vegas just scored. I remember I wanted the devils jacket but they didnt have my size at champs sports in woodbridge mall. The san jose one was cheaper so I talked my mom into getting me that and then using my birthday present to get me these sick ass bauer vapor rollerblades that were on sale but the most expensive skates I had owned to this point. BONUS! The chassis kinda matched.
The amount of street hockey we played in hs is insane. If there was fresh blocktop we were skating in it. My buddy made a regulation size goal in metal shop we dragged that thing every where lol
Yesssssssss I brought a pair to go visit my family in ITALY and allllllllllll the kids in the neighborhood were following me down the street like I was a celebrity... I was 9...
YES! That's what they were. I LOVED mine but when I was playing basketball, the refs made me cover up the lights with masking tape bc they were "distracting" lol.
Did you ever have the ones that came with the CO2 pump to air them up? I use to keep the pump and spare cartridges in my lunch box for recess. They worked, but the original pumps and Shaq Pumps were way better!
Let me tell you the Hornets really really wanted fans in the 90's. I never followed basketball, but in the early 90's I started collecting some baseball cards on the side when I could talk my dad into buying a pack. In 1993 after about a year of collecting, I got one of those beckett books with card prices/values in it. In the very back of the book on the last couple of pages they had the address for all the MLB teams listed, but it also had all the NBA teams also.
I wrote a letter and rewrote the exact same letter like 40 times (no printer or computer for me in 1993). I mailed a letter to every MLB and NBA team to saying I was their biggest fan to see if they would write back.
I never got anything back from like 80% of them, but many sent me a canned response letter back saying thanks for the letter. A few sent me a little something like a card of one of their players or a poster with the team schedule for the next season on it.
There were a couple of teams that went the extra mile.
I specifically remember two standouts.
The Chicago Cubs sent me a thank you letter for being a fan, along with a cubs drinking mug and a wall poster.
Then there was the Charlotte Hornets. They sent a thank you letter, a pack with 10 different wall posters in it, and 4 hornets themed basketball card packs that may have been custom for their merchandise because it only had hornet players cards in the packs.
Also the thank you letter was signed by two players who were on the team. I don't remember the names off hand, but they were not their top talent and names likely people wouldn't know today, but it was still cool as a 4th grader.
Number one jacket was Bulls, number two was Hornets. It was more popular than the other Chicago teams in Chicago. They just crushed it with that design and color palette.
Yup. This one was prevalent. The Bulls was #1, and UNC, Notre Dame, and Dallas Cowboys were seen sometimes too. Most kids were just picking them more for the colors than the teams. Especially the girls.
I grew up in the Chicago area right in the thick of that time. #1 was obviously the Bulls, but don’t forget about the then-new silver and black White Sox caps and uniforms. After that, yeah, the Hornets and any of the teal teams (such as the Sharks) and other silver and black teams (Raiders and LA Kings) were huge.
I had a Notre Dame one too. It was fine but you're right it was a clear step below the others. I did have a Penny Hardaway jersey though which was pretty sick
Hornets, Magic, Panthers (Carolina with minor flecks of Florida), Tar Heels, dash of Raiders, dash of Sharks — nobody will understand the chokehold that these logos had in the early to mid 90s.
One time me and my friends got in a little trouble with local law enforcement and I had on this jacket and hat. I ran home changed into a red Chicago Bulls jacket and hat and walked right back out like nothing ever happened. The perfect disguise lol
My school tried to ban them because of gang related appeal. Student organized a walk out and they changed their mind. Said it was unfair to change the dress code after parents already bought their kids clothes for school. The next year came and the style had changed they never went back to banning them. Huge over reaction by the school.
I begged my parents for this jacket, but instead they got me a hornets gym bag. I lived just outside Portland Oregon, tho so everyone hated on it. I was a Blazer fan too, I just loved the colors and the style.
My twin sister and I wore this one around 95-96. We played basketball and our team name was the hornets so naturally we had to have a Charlotte Hornets starter 😅
You had to be really careful wearing it though because those are gang colors and you might be targeted by a rival gang, just shot and killed on the way home from school because of one cool ass jacket that unfortunately caused mistaken identity.
At least that was an accepted fact in one very small, rural, Midwest town.
Only competition was the Miami Hurricanes Starter Jacket…which I rocked! Also had an Eagles Starter that my pops got me…but I was secretly a Steelers fan.
Starter jackets in general were super popular, though the teal colour of the Hornets one was certainly in keeping with the times.
I had a Florida Panthers one right around their improbable Stanley Cup run (the one with the plastic rats) and I loved it. That old Panthers logo is still one of my favourite hockey logos ever.
Yeah I got one (not Charlotte, Notre Dame) for Christmas from my grandparents one year and then this whole news hysteria broke out about kids getting jacked for their Starter jackets and gang affiliation. They took it away from me like 2 months after I got it. I lived in a rural suburb in Texas with a population of 1,200. The Bloods weren't going to shank me at the middle school for my Starter jacket.
I'm surprised you were allowed to wear it to school. My school absolutely banned anything cigarette and alcohol related and even if your Marlboro jacket was your only coat, you'd better turn that sicker inside out or leave it at home.
My Grammer worked in a gas station and smoked camels, we had all the camel joe swag. I remember using the tins that were made to hold cartons for my Barbie dolls.
Who is this content creator? This is the second day in a row I've seen this guy, clutching a book i guess, in the little circle. This one checks out but the one yesterday about those born from 89 to 99 knowing life before and after the Internet was insane. Just straight up erasure of us.
Everyone pretty much had the Hornets one, but one older boy on my bus had a Miami Heat one which was nice and my crush had a Seattle SuperSonics one which of course was the best since he was so cute.
I still have one I bought at a vintage shop in Vegas around 2010. I wear it once or twice a year and someone always comments positively on it. And, anyone that says it’s uncomfortable is lying. It’s super comfortable, warm, and pillow soft!
First piece of fashion I remember desperately wanting. I got it! A Bulls one. The texture of that jacket is amongst the most unpleasant of tactile sensations, and I never wore it after the first try.

I had Milwaukee Bucks one Purple/white/green/silver

I wanted a Bulls one so bad. Got a purple Phoenix Suns one instead. It was so humiliating.
nikolai813@reddit
I had this FSU jacket from the early 90s. Rocked the shit out of it even in southeast Kentucky / East Tennessee.

The colors. So quintessentially '90s!

The Colorado Rockies starter was the bomb in my experience.
hangout927@reddit
Agreed but my neighbor in the mid 90’s had a black Miami hurricanes starter jacket and imo that was way way sweeter
Ianthin1@reddit
Colorado Rockies and Phoenix Suns colors went hard too.
Stuffleapugus@reddit
It's crazy how often this jacket gets brought up.
Kinetic_Silverwolf@reddit
Did they? I was an Adidas or Puma kid, since they made the best soccer gear. I necer even wanted a Start jacket.

Your eyes may have been filled with tears at the time, so that’s understandable.

OutsiderLookingN@reddit
I was rocking the Camel Joe jacket that I earned from my mom’s smoking. The teachers were not impressed when i wore it to school. Camels were cool 😎
clutzycook@reddit
I'm surprised you were allowed to wear it to school. My school absolutely banned anything cigarette and alcohol related and even if your Marlboro jacket was your only coat, you'd better turn that sicker inside out or leave it at home.
Flowersinhercurls@reddit
My Grammer worked in a gas station and smoked camels, we had all the camel joe swag. I remember using the tins that were made to hold cartons for my Barbie dolls.
therealskittlepoop@reddit
Hahahaha I had a neon yellow Jim beam hat from my grandmas drinking (gramma love to 106 or 107 btw, maybei need to start hittingthat hard liquor)

Who is this content creator? This is the second day in a row I've seen this guy, clutching a book i guess, in the little circle. This one checks out but the one yesterday about those born from 89 to 99 knowing life before and after the Internet was insane. Just straight up erasure of us.
Good-Operation4373@reddit
Lots of kids had that jacket in high school! Starter was a cool brand back then
maggie320@reddit
Everyone pretty much had the Hornets one, but one older boy on my bus had a Miami Heat one which was nice and my crush had a Seattle SuperSonics one which of course was the best since he was so cute.
Deep_Dimension_8919@reddit
I still have one I bought at a vintage shop in Vegas around 2010. I wear it once or twice a year and someone always comments positively on it. And, anyone that says it’s uncomfortable is lying. It’s super comfortable, warm, and pillow soft!
Anxious-Cupcake-84@reddit
My crush in middle school had a 49ers Starter Jacket.

First piece of fashion I remember desperately wanting. I got it! A Bulls one. The texture of that jacket is amongst the most unpleasant of tactile sensations, and I never wore it after the first try.
Still makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.
