Then vs now — what car feature do you miss vs what you can't live without?
Posted by spotforcars@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 365 comments
I'll start both sides.
Then: Manual choke on a rear-engine Škoda 120 in a Polish winter. You didn't start the car — you negotiated with it every single morning.
Now: Brake hold. I feel personally offended every time I drive a car without it.
What's yours?

I want my CD player back!
Great-Attitude@reddit
Gas intake, behind the back license plate. You could take any open spot at a gas station, no worrying about which side it's on. Saved me a lot of time.
The_Alarmist84Camaro@reddit
Can't tell ya how many times I watched as gas spewed out from the license plate when someone accelerated hard. No thanks!!

Miss: T-tops. Can’t live without: Apple CarPlay
Top_Independence2676@reddit
Actual air vents. In front of windshield and ones on the sides in front of the front doors.
drumming4coffee@reddit
I miss two things about 1970s / 1980s cars: t-tops and pop up headlights. The two things about modern cars I can’t live without are the horsepower and the reliability.
krakatoa83@reddit
Miss the ease of repairing cars from before the mid 80s.
Need theback up camera
Tampadarlyn@reddit
Both of these. I could change my own alternator in the 80's. Now you need an engineering degree and schematics to find the damn thing!
The backup camera is now like old FM radio then. If it isn't standard, the car is outdated.
KeKeFanChick@reddit
I know. In the 80s, I drove a '69 Nova (not the SS unfortunately.) BUT when I popped the hood, other than the mounting arms, you could see to the ground on all sides. I once changed a blown hose without any tools because the hose clamps had a slotted hex head that could be turned with a dime.
97_gEEk@reddit
By law backup cameras are required on every new car sold in the US. No worries about losing those any time soon!
KeKeFanChick@reddit
Right? Mom-and-pop service centers are struggling to compete too. Our favorite mechanic retired because, in his words, he has become just a parts replacer.
NewsShoddy3834@reddit
The triangular front side window flappy thingy. You could rest your hand with the cigar ash out the window.
Kenintf@reddit
You mean the wing window, I think. That's what I was going to post.
daemonhat@reddit
i always called it the vent window
Kenintf@reddit
I never called them anything else growing up in the 50s and 60s in Northern California. Where ya' talkin'? Maybe there are regional variations.
daemonhat@reddit
nw ohio
daemonhat@reddit
i wouldn't say it's a feature, but i miss the simplicity of older cars. back then if your car didn't start you checked fuses, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel pump. now who the hell knows. back up camera breaks and puts your car in limp mode or whatever. as far as what i can't live without, i can't really think of anything besides maybe satellite radio, steering wheel controls, and heated side view mirrors.
Why_so_glum_chum@reddit
I learned a valuable lesson after two days of checking every one of those things multiple times before an old guy came off his porch apparently frustrated after sitting there watching me for the two days. He pulled the two wires off the ballast resistor Dodge has on the firewall, jumped them and told me to start the damn car. Fired right up! I thanked him and went and bought TWO ballast resistors, lol. Best part is, I got to look like a hero to my old man when he called me telling me his 79 Chrysler LeBaron wouldnt start. Went over and used my spare resistor and fired his right up.
daemonhat@reddit
lol i remember the ballast resistor. i had a 74 Plymouth Satellite Sebring that had an issue with those.
ZoeFerret@reddit
I got so spoiled with high end cars in my past. I love the stop hold feature since the lights take so long in my area. 360 camera was awesome to make sure I parked correctly. Having a car with a lot of get up and go is nice too. I don't speed much but Iike to merge on the freeway without dying.
Times are tough and I just need to make sure I have a working car that will take me from point A to B.

I miss the color pallette... today, 72% of all cars are greyscale, white, black, silver, or something in between. 47% of all statistics are just made up on the spot, so my numbers might be off, don't come at me.
Where I live, outside of Chicago, we have all 4 seasons, except winter is the longest at about 8 months. Heated seats are nice, but a heated steering wheel is the best!!
Ancient-Cow-1038@reddit
Good point about colours. The pendulum’s swinging back a bit, but it’s taking time.

Now way! Another person that likes color choices in automobiles that are not greyscale, white, black or silver.

I miss the ECO mode on my Fiat 850, you just switched the car off and keep going.
Mazda 323 telling me that my windscreen washer fluid is low.
Peugeot 307, not a feature but surprises. Stopping wherever it fancies whenever it fancies for no particular reason. After 30 minutes would restart as if nothing happened and go on smoothly for another 2 weeks.
At OP, negotiating with a Skoda 120, spare wheel under the car front side, car jack in the engine bay (rear), tools somewhere else. Tricky part opening the engine bay means that you need to open one of the back doors, find a funny lever and pull. Lowering the spare wheel is another ordeal, twist a lever and it drops to the ground then drag it out.
Today I can't live without the Android Auto.
MeatofKings@reddit
I miss being able to reach around and work on the engine. Now you can’t hardly get around the smog control and wiring systems. Can’t live without the cooled and heated seats.
Ray_The_Engineer@reddit
Manual transmissions were common when I learned to drive, I still love the involvement. Even a boring car could be fun to drive with one; I drove a glass delivery truck in the summer of 1988 with "3 on the tree", a manual shifter on the steering column, and a clutch, and had a blast.

People who love to drive, love driving manuals.
My wife's automatic (with CVT, ugh) bores me to death.

Ford explorer had a numeric keypad lock on it to unlock and lock suv. So if skiing, at beach etc would leave keys in cars and lock with keypad lock. Wtf they got ride of it was bey’ond me as one if not best feature I had on car that was not based on luxury pricing
NotEasilyConfused@reddit
It had a lot to do with the fact that anyone could just break the window and use the keys to steal the vehicle.
curiousme123456@reddit
Yeah but (1) no way anyone knows your keys are there (2) its easy to break into a car and steal period without keys so the logic doesn't hold in today's era. Remind me not to invite to party.
VarietyMage@reddit
The ability to turn on my defrosters AND keep my outside vents shut at the same time, so I'm not allowing in cold outside air, thus defeating the purpose of DEFROSTING MY WINDSHIELD. My current car can't do that.

ONROSREPUS@reddit
Honestly I don't know why automobiles are still offering GPS. Why not just use it on your phone? In dash GPS seems old school to me when just about every phone can navigate.
TheJokersChild@reddit
Google does a better job of GPS than my '18 car's built-in, and it's not such a hassle to keep up to date. GM's been facing resistance in doing away with built-in Car Play and Android Auto, probably because of this.
Speaking of GM, does anyone still use OnStar?
GrandMoffJerjerrod@reddit
I miss the floor board high beam switch.
5am_dad@reddit
I was telling someone about these a couple of weeks ago and they didn't believe me 🤣
TheJokersChild@reddit
That died about the time they put it on the blinker stalk with the cruise control, lights and wipers.
Except for Ford, who had the "better idea" of putting the horn there and the wipers behind it.
TheJokersChild@reddit
I miss wing windows. Really added to the style of a car.
Love heated seats and wheel. Wish I had them in my car.

Oh hell yeah! That’s sexy! 😍 I have a Greddy Turbo kit, and other goodies, so she’s no slouch. That 51 drives like a tractor though. it has a “flat six”. lol
FlatSixFun@reddit
Nice, that's a light car to begin with, I'm sure that livens it up even more. What does the turbo kit add for power?
MisterSandKing@reddit
It bumps it up about another 140, so it makes about 390-400whp. It’s not a very ideal daily, but it’s fun when you want to rip around.
FlatSixFun@reddit
Oh wow, I bet that can be a handful. But with that steering, I’m sure it’s a blast.
MisterSandKing@reddit
Oh yeah! The six speed gear box is really excellent, the nicest manual transmission I’ve ever used. Have you ever done a track day? I bet your car is so great to take on some mountain roads! Love the color too, I’ve always had a thing for silver Porsches. 👌🏼
Twizt1Up@reddit
I envy you. My 83 Camaro was 5 on the floor...made it from El Toro, California to Jacksonville, Florida in 32 hours thanks to the Mojave and I-10 east of Waco. Blowing through the desert at 115 mph with a full moon was scary and exhilarating and reckless all at the same time.
FlatSixFun@reddit
Wow, that's a seriously fast pace.
Twizt1Up@reddit
What got me through the Mojave (in July) was the fact that I had no AC. I drove past all these cars that pulled over because they overheated. Granted, by San Antonio my left arm was crispy bacon, but I never overheated. That fucking Camaro was a jewel in the desert, literally.
FlatSixFun@reddit
I drove through the Mojave in August of '98 on a cross country road trip, no AC (and not at Camaro speeds), but crispy is an understatement. You unlocked a memory of which I clearly recall the hot air coming in through the window feeling like I was being blasted by a hair dryer. Luckily no overheating, but that Subaru did blow a head gasket right after I got home from that nearly 10,000 mile trip.

ONROSREPUS@reddit

FlatSixFun@reddit

I like heated seats, but I've got to say, I like cooled/vented seats even more.
Lumpy-Artist-6996@reddit
We call the heated seats butt warmers. I use mine a lot because the heat helps a lot with my arthritic lower back.
DeaddyRuxpin@reddit
I miss car designs having personality.
I can’t live without my 360 degree camera view for parking. It makes seeing if I’m centered in the spot, or close enough to the curb, etc, so much easier.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Mobility blobs is a good name for new automobiles. I understand they are trying to be aero dynamic to help with fuel mileage and such but they are so close to the same shape with no personality.
giraffe-zackeffron@reddit
I love the new technology that exists in cars..for the most part. I bought a new car last year. I hate the auto hi beam feature. I’m sure there’s a way to dismantle it on the touchscreen control panel thing. I just haven’t looked into it yet. I hate it because the second a car in front of me goes over a hill, it auto hi beams. Then a second later when the car is in sight again, it goes back to low. It always goes to low beam when I pull into my subdivision. I live in a very rural area and there are no street lights on my street. I actually want hi beams when I pull onto my street. Again, I’m sure this can be changed to manual control. I just haven’t looked into it yet. Laziness on my part for sure. Speaking of high beams, I miss the floor button hi beams. That made sense. I also miss manual transmissions. I would never want to live without an automatic, such as when I’m in heavy traffic on the rare occasion I drive into the city. But for cruising around my little town, I would love a manual. I miss cars that are not computers. But I can’t live without GPS. Another thing I hate about my new car is the fact that if I’m not gripping the steering wheel tightly enough, I get a warning on the screen telling me to keep my hands on the steering wheel. Again, I’m sure that can be turned off. I just haven’t looked into it.
Probably my biggest complaint is trucks. I bought a truck several years ago because I needed a truck. I had bought a house and was renovating it myself. That meant regular trips to Lowe’s, Home Depot, and other such places. On any given day, I was hauling wood, flooring, paint, toilets, vanities, etc. Also hauling stuff to the trash dump like three floors worth of carpeting, paneling, rotted osb, etc. I searched forever before getting lucky and finding great truck at a great price. Still, it’s far more than what I needed. I remember when you could buy a new work truck that was regular cab, manual transmission, manual doors and windows, long bed, no frills, just a simple truck for like $10k. Now, every new truck is like a luxury vehicle, with luxury vehicle pricing. I also miss small trucks. My truck is a first generation Toyota tundra. It’s an awesome truck. I love it. A friend of mine bought a new Toyota Tacoma. For those who don’t know, the Tacoma is the small truck whereas the tundra is the full size. My tundra is a 2005. My friend bought a new Tacoma in 2018. He came to my house one day and parked his Tacoma next to my tundra. I was surprised to see the front end of his truck was significantly larger than mine. The bed of his truck however, is much smaller. The bed is so small, it’s honestly useless as a truck. I think it’s a five foot bed. Basically the only thing that truck would be useful for is getting groceries. What happened to work trucks? Give me a regular cab, eight foot bed, manual transmission, manual door locks, manual windows, and vinyl floors. The only upgrade I would make in truck like that is I would want Bluetooth capability so I could listen to music from my phone. My truck has plenty of life left in it and my car is brand new. But if I find an older vehicle with manual transmission, manual locks and windows, actual buttons and knobs on the dash rather than a screen, I’ll buy it. I don’t need three vehicles but I will absolutely buy a third one if I can find one like that.
badchadrick@reddit
There was a guy who bought a new Toyota tundra with the smaller crew cab and the 8’ bed. The dealer posted the picture on FB. The comments were unhinged.
8’ Toyota bed
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Interesting. I have only had club cab/super cab trucks with 8' beds. They are the perfect truck for me.
spotforcars@reddit (OP)
The truck thing is the most real complaint in this entire thread. I remember when a work truck was a tool not a luxury statement. Now you want a basic Tacoma and you’re paying $45k for a truck with a bed too small to haul anything useful. The auto high beam thing is infuriating too — technology solving problems nobody had while creating new ones nobody asked for.
Das_Rote_Han@reddit
Miss - manual transmission, column shifters, hi/lo beam button on the floor and aftermarket radios of the 90's and that cars prior to the 2000's were fairly easy to work on.
Can't live without - bluetooth? Power windows. Rear defrost. Power mirrors are nice especially when a car is shared. 4x4 on cars and not just trucks is nice too.
I can live without carbureted engines. Getting the choke and engine turnover sequence timed with the correct gas pedal depression on a 77 Ford Maverick was an artform that may leave you with a flooded engine or vapor lock in the summer. I used carbureted engines on tractors from the 1940's that fired up every time but that Maverick...

You can get non electric keys even if your vehicle has them. We got a regular spare key for boating/crabbing/fishing, anything with lots of water and fewer dry pockets. They do cost more, but cheaper than replacing the fancy key when you accidentally drown the thing.

i miss foot parking brakes. so satisfying to hear it click down, vs the button i now push. will it work? will it not? who knows, everything is computer.

I agree! Fortunately my 24 Nissan truck has a manual parking brake. I love to hear those clicks as I push the foot lever down!

My 2026 Honda has physical buttons in addition to the touchscreen. I love physical buttons/knobs. But top accessories for me are heated seats and steering wheel.
I miss manual transmissions
rachangin@reddit
You miss a feature that is only a couple months old… Did you mean 2026?
saxdiver@reddit
Lots of people in this thread say they miss physical knobs and buttons. My 2026 has physical buttons. I just meant to say that there are modern cars that still have that
I miss manual transmissions, I think there's something like 15 models on the market today with them
rachangin@reddit
Gotcha! I used to go between manual and automatic cars every other purchase. But then traffic seemed to get worse and there’s nothing I hate more than driving a manual in heavy traffic. Fortunately, I have a motorcycle so I get a clutch when riding it :-)
FeistyMuttMom@reddit
I don’t want it in my car but dang I wish kids today could experience the “tail gunner” spot in the back of the station wagon.

Vent windows or “cozy wings”. I mean, yeah… they killed and maimed some people back in the day. But god damn were they handy.
DreadedFistNW@reddit
Also the pop out rear windows on 2 doors.
My 96 M3 has them and 'kids' at shows are like wow that's awesome wish we had that it lets the bass out lol.
nrith@reddit
Is that why they went away? How did they kill people?
Minimum_Painter_3687@reddit
If you had them open you basically had pointy steel and glass aimed right at you. If you got into an accident or the vehicle encountered some type of impact, driver or passenger could be launched straight into them.
Keep in mind they were also a feature long before seat belt laws. No one was really using seat belts back in the day anyway.

Love lane assist and break hold. And while not perfect, auto breaking saved me and the car twice now when someone in front of me in heavy traffic slammed their breaks for no known reason, fortunately the whole line of us had it so no one hit anyone else either
Andyman1973@reddit
Had to turn my auto brake feature off, would trigger for hazards that weren’t hazards, such as a vehicle that was moving into a highway off-ramp lane. After the second time of scaring a few years off my life, I had to disable it(it’s a part of the auto cruise control feature). It would also aggressively brake, to resume set speed, if I sped up to overtake a slower moving vehicle as well. After a few times of that, it dawned on me that those slower moving vehicles might think I was brake-checking them. No thank you!
Consistent-Tie-4394@reddit
Autobrake and lane assist are not designed to handle Southern California's freeway traffic. My newish car was constantly beeping warnings, unexpectantly braking like you described, and trying to follow nonexistent and/or overwritten lane lines. Had to turn all that nonsense off just to get through my daily commute safely and with my sanity intact.
Andyman1973@reddit
I never used my lane assist. Had an ex that used to grab the steering wheel whenever she was angry about whatever she was angry about. I tired lane assist once, and it reminded me too much of that ex.
Accomplished-B@reddit
Yeah, mine likes to warn me about bridges when coming to a curve or well placed hill, but it doesn't actually break and gets over it's self. But that came after an update, the first year or so it would actually stop, and I had turned it off for a bit. But it's better now, not perfect, but way less troubling,

I was already aware of them but I found my lifelong appreciation of the Grateful Dead on a barely there station in the wee hours driving on a two lane state road in rural southern Ohio.
I did a lot of that type of driving in the very early nineties. Mostly because I was lonely and bored and had nowhere to go. It didn’t take long to realize that the weird, cool music was generally on the stations with the weakest signal.

I can't think of anything. The only thing comes close is the parking brake. It's automatic now, and doesn't give that same satisfying ratcheting sound when you engage it. I don't miss that though.

What I really miss is light weight. The only way you can get a new car that weighs less than a ton and a half these days is to plonk down the big bucks for a Lotus. And I'm pretty sure that those are over a ton! Light weight means the car is far more responsive, takes less energy to get up to speed, and puts less wear and tear on ... well, everything!
The absolute number one favorite feature of newer cars? The back-up camera! It's an extra point of view, and down below the level of your windows so you can see stuff that is completely not viewable out the rear window!

Two of the things that I have thought about recently are in your list, the wing windows and the flip button for switching the high and low beams. I miss those as well. What I can’t live without now adaptive cruise control, backup cameras and air-conditioned seats. I live in Central Texas and I don’t care if you put the thing in the window and you block the back window and you have window shades all the way around and window tint those cars get hot!
Mattturley@reddit
Adaptive cruise control is something I'll never go without again. I lived in DC for 25 years. After divorce and medical disability I moved into my motorhome and travel full time. I have to go to DC every 3 months minimum for doctors. ACC on 270 down from Frederick. Set it as soon as I get on the road and it handles the flow of speed from 80 to zero and the many on the brake moments like a champ. Took me a while to trust it and even set with the shortest tracking distance, in the DC region that's like a flashing neon sign asking people to cut you off which can lead to whiplash. But you learn to work with it.
MuttsandHuskies@reddit

Brilliant_Activity39@reddit
Off-topic, but I always really wanted that Skoda after seeing one in Germany. What I miss are the "no-draft" ventilation side wing windows in VWs, older GMs, etc. What I cannot live without... NGL: brake hold is sweet, but really it's having a stock stereo that's good enough that I don't need to rewire my car to enjoy rush hour traffic.
spotforcars@reddit (OP)
The Škoda was something else — rear engine, light steering, felt like nothing else on the road. And those vent windows were genuinely brilliant engineering that we somehow decided to stop making. Crack it just right and you had perfect airflow without wind noise. Nobody has improved on that idea in 40 years.

My 2024 threw me a bone by having a spinning volume control on the steering wheel but the rest of the car is operated on the touch screen. It is touch, hold, and slide for temperature. I would much prefer a dial or a knob. If it wasn't for that spinning volume dial on my left thumb, I'd have nothing to fidget with while driving.
Two new features I didn't think I'd like and do: Keyless entry. Walk up on the car and the doors are open. Second is Auto climate: If I can't fiddle with knobs....then I'd rather set it and never touch it.

I own a 1946 Plymouth with three on the tree. It has a throttle increase lever on the dash, that bumps the throttle up a few hundred RPMs. The owner's manual (a whopping 30 pages long) States you can use it as a hill assist device.
The manual also states that if you don't know how to drive a car, your Plymouth dealer will be happy to give you driving lessons. This car was produced the first full year after world war II. A lot of gi's coming home with money to spend that had never driven a car before the war.

Starters and alternators positioned with ease of replacement in mind. I’ve seen vehicles where replacing something as simple and is also a 90k part require $1500 worth of labor.
While we’re on it, it’s just utterly stupid that fuel pumps can’t be accessed through a hatch on the floor board. Having to drop a gas tank to install a (yet again) $125, 90k part is just insane. Car mfgs hate you want you to sell your car before 100k and buy another one.

Heated seats with the AC for the old farts with bad backs works, too. Ventilated seats are a nice touch for humid summers, though.

I liked the button on the floor (to the left of the brake pedal) that was used to turn high beams on and off. By the time I was (legally) driving that was already an "old" feature but I still had a couple of cars that had it and always liked that more then moving the lever by the steering wheel. Of course now most cars have auto high beam switching but it never seems to work good enough to rely on.
IRingTwyce@reddit

Look at the comparison between the usefulness of a nice 1960s or 70s pickup with two doors, a bench seat and an 8' × 4' bed that was useful for hauling full sheets of drywall and a modern 7 foot tall behemoth 4×4 with supernovae headlights that maybe sees gravel roads occasionally (but not the objects 8' in front of it) and a 4' bed that may fit all your groceries. I miss not having technology everything computer, touch screens. Can't live without a/c& heated seats.
MarkItZeroDonnie@reddit
My insurance would be $2500 a month if they took my back up camera .
katzinthebuf@reddit
I miss the dials so much more than the touchscreen.
What I like in my current vehicle is the backup camera
soopirV@reddit
Then: cigarette lighters Now: adaptive cruise control
Dazedsince1970@reddit
Miss vent windows
Live without A/C
KyotiKill@reddit
Then- manual windows
Now- a working AC
spotforcars@reddit (OP)
Florida resident here — AC isn't a feature it's a survival tool.
KyotiKill@reddit
Arkansas here, so definitely a must.
I had way too many cars without working AC when I was younger. I use to be fine with it, and was happy as long as the heat worked. But getting old sucks and so does premenopause.
BuccoFever412@reddit
Miss Then - Manual transmission. Very hard to find on new models.
Now - 360/backup cameras.
42Navigator@reddit
I miss the floor button for high beams.
I cant live without heated seats now.
Thirty_Helens_Agree@reddit
Two features I love - a secure remote start where, ten minutes before I leave the house on a February morning, I point the key fob out the window and start ‘er up. By the time I get in, the seat is warm and warm air is blowing from the vents. I do the same at the office before I leave.
And the navigation on a big display screen. I go to lots of small-town courthouses and that makes finding my way around so damn easy.
Kapt_Krunch72@reddit
I miss the manual transmission. I don't know if I'd ever buy a car without cruise control again.
Equivalent_Gap_805@reddit
Miss bench seats, they were comfortable. Only thing I like on these new vehicles is rear backup camera. A lot of blind spots in these new cars and my fat old body doesn't twist like it used to.
AlyceEnchanted@reddit
Miss…the 5 CD changer/player.
Can’t live without…heated seats. Eases the painful back and hips.
tvieno@reddit
What I miss: A radio separate from the display console. I don't want to have to go 3 menus deep to switch from Android Auto to AM/FM.
What I won't live without: heated seats and adaptive cruise control.
spotforcars@reddit (OP)
Three menus deep to change a station is peak "we can so we did" engineering. Nobody asked for that. Heated seats though — I'd pay extra just for those.
Crims0nGirl@reddit
I miss a cd player..
Chief7064@reddit
Then: wing windows
Now: self driving
joelav@reddit
I had a 1986 Honda Accord LXi hatchback. One of my favorite cars. It had the ability to flip the center heat/ac outlets to vent outside air. This was awesome in the winter when blasting the defroster but it was already 90 degrees in the car.
Now, I can’t live without my EV. Driving ICE vehicles feels broken and archaic now.
Guardsred70@reddit
Then: the ball chiller vent under the steering wheel.
Now: Cars that are actually fast and have good handling and brakes. I’ve looked at a few 80s cars as project cars….and they’re really slow. And the brakes suck. And they handle like a boat.
Seagrave63@reddit
Heated steering. My circulation is piss poor
Prestigious-Top-5897@reddit
Loud stereo with Amps and Subwoofer 😁
Now: My Carplay Display
online_plumzone@reddit
man, the thrill of rollin’ the dice with that manual choke was half the fun; now it's like my car's basically doing my math homework for me
ConsuelaApplebee@reddit
A manual transmission!
Lostboyintheforest@reddit
Then....the window wings, manual windows, manual brakes and steering.
Now.... electronic everything which I loathe.
