As long as it doesn't go Krakatoa we'll all be fine
Gryphin@reddit
I mean.... maybe that might not be the worst thing that could happen in 2026?

Um... google 1883
dittybopper_05H@reddit
Umm... Google 2022.

Roughly the same magnitude of the 1883 Krakatoa eruption. We're still here.

I know all about Krakatoa, that was the point :)
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
Well now you've gone and done jinxed it.

The way this year has gone? Yeah. He probably did.

Talked to a former coworker who lives just outside the affected cities of the Mayon Volcano and said her family's fine, but the smell of sulfur and bits of ash are still able to reach them despite being 20km away. While this volcano is active and measures are in place, I still fear that if this thing goes loud, it might reach us here in Manila.

Volcano was the one thing I didn’t upvote on the monthly fear index so OF COURSE it happened.

Yikes, volcanoes are scary stuff. Hope evacuations get everyone out in time. Meanwhile I’ll be queueing up the Galanggung Glider episode of Mayday Air Disasters to watch for the umpteenth time.

Depends on the volcano - yeah stratovolcanoes are scary af. Shield volcanoes are more just glowy pretty.
ExtensionMoose1863@reddit
yeah but this one IS a stratovolcano, the same type as Mount Tambora which erupted in 1816 and caused the "year without a summer"... globally...
angrytetchy@reddit
Yeah, but you said "volcanoes" not just stratovolcanoes. Perhaps a bit pendantic, but given that the amount of freakouts that occur with my "oh cool our volcano is erupting again :)" statements, it might be a good distinction to make.

I did?

Apologies, I confused you with the person I was originally replying to.
Based on historical things, it seems to be the Indonesian volcanoes that tend to blow with catastrophic issues for the world rather than the Filipino ones. Pinatubo did have an impact on the global temperatures, but not on the scale of Tambora. Were we lucky? Undoubtedly. But now I also want to rabbit hole down into the depths of Indonesian vs Filipino eruptive differences...

I remember Mt Pinatubo
