Depends on whether you'll drive it every day or it'll be a weekend toy.
If it's your only method of transportation, you can't really go wrong with a g8, SS, cts-v, Camaro Mustang, whatever. Take your pick, they're all fine.
If it's a weekend toy, I'd probably go for something older. Foxbody, G-Body, or c5 probably. You can get something pretty wild of any of these with a 25k budget.
I am finding automatic ones in the mid 20s range with 80-90k miles, which I would not personally consider insane. Won't find a manual one anywhere near this budget though.
You'd be surprised how much people are paranoid about mileage on any car. I see people say "I don't want a high mileage car" and they'll mention some car with like 60K miles as being "high mileage", as if 100K is some magic number where it stops working.
That is very strange to me. I've had things with 400k miles that I drove every day. I guess my threshold for what I consider "high mileage" changes heavily based on the engine. I don't think 100k is crazy for an American v8. I probably don't want a 100k mile twin turbo German v8. For diesels of any kind and 90s Japanese NA four cylinders, there isn't really a mileage number I'm afraid of.
My brother rolled his eyes when he heard I bought a Honda with 112K miles as my first car. It's one of the smoother running cars I've been in within the past decade.
I sold my friends son my ls3 swapped 280z for $24k. Missed it so much I built myself another!
It’s a special bond you make with an older raw car, I recommend every car guy gets one at some point to appreciate where the modern vehicle has gotten too, and to appreciate how insanely unsafe and cool old cars are.
For sure! I have a foxbody with a stroker motor, custom valved coilovers, tubular adjustable control arms, and all kinds of shit. It's a high twelve second car which ain't wild by modern standards but it's a riot to drive.
I know it’s not in your budget but used C8s are going pretty cheap recently and they are probably the best bang for buck out there bar none. A used jaguar Ftype is on your budget and they are comparable to a muscle car + the euro prestige
Ford Falcon Sprint ( but it would take some negotiating to get a good one for under $25k). It would have to be a 1965,.. I think that was the only year you could get it with a 289 and a 4 speed manual transmission. In fact I’m logging off now and doing some searching!
I think you can probably find a decent S550 Mustang GT for under 25. That would be the choice for me as a guy that has always daily driven a sports car.
I currently have a tuned inline 6 turbo and it’s fast. However, there’s nothing like the feeling and sound of the high torque that a strong V8 will give you.
I have a family car now (2014 BMW X5) and it hits most of my needs with few compromises. My fun vehicle is a 2013 Triumph Speed Triple R (1050cc). Nowhere as fast as the current 1000+ cc bikes but this bike is so torquey and has a direct analog throttle linkage and it’s so sublime. I’m often faster than my friends in twisty roads because the power isn’t too scary. Also, I don’t have to be screaming at high RPM’s to have a blast. It kind of reminds me of my old C5 corvettes and even my old NA 1998 BMW 328i.
BMW Z4 M roadster. A totally underrated car that is an insane value right now. 25k will get a nice, lowish mileage one.
Reliable for what it is. The s54 is a tank for such an extreme engine. No chassis issues like the e46-the subframe is bolted directly to the frame rails. Safe, super stiff chassis, relatively light. No complicated roof, just a simple, light, cloth unit. It has all the upgrades of the late model e46 m3 like MK60 and v2 differential. Can get full leather interior.
Tons of over steer on command. Great steering/chassis feel. One of the greatest engines of all time. Manual only. Still fast but not too fast too have fun with on public roads. One of the greatest engines of all time. Rare, low production. Great looking in the right color.
Hardly a more fun car on the road. It's the middle ground between a Corvette and a Boxster.
