What are the origins of 'the game'?
Posted by headtheatre@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 61 comments
Before anyone starts, ITA and accept it. I also apologise in advance.
When I was at college 20 years ago I was introduced to 'The Game.' The aim of the game was to forget the game and the moment you remembered it you instantly lost and the game reset. Over the years I have shared the game and met other players from all over but I want to know where the game originated etc.
Can you help me with this?

To save people clicking (cause this is Reddit and even with sources, people be mad you don't just tell them):
Ahrimel@reddit
The first known reference is 2002? Wow, surprised it's that late. I was introduced to the Game in 1997 at uni and it had clearly been around as the Game for a good while before then.
TeHNeutral@reddit
You are now the first known reference
octobod@reddit
... and have lost the Frist Reference game

So I can remember a long Wikipedia debate about this. The thing is it existed for a long time as "that thing your mate told you about that wasn't super interesting but you can't quite forget." Occasionally people would bring it up and it was a bit of a chuckle - but nobody wrote it down anywhere "official".
Now a lot of things exist like that as in jokes within a small circle. That group of friends talks about this a lot but it isn't really much outside those people. (It is also worth remembering that people love lame Wikipedia pranks so a certain type of person will try to make "that funny thing my cousin said when he was stoned" into an article on Wikipedia.)
The Game was forever getting deleted from Wikipedia because nobody had written about it in anything that counted as any kind of source (like a newspaper or magazine or well known website).
It was almost a relief when there was a tiny mention of it in some non English newspaper somewhere and it could finally be attested to actually exist.

Finchley Central sounded so much like Mornington Crescent that I had to see if there was any link between the two.

I've just lost the game. Prick

I used to play this in my own head for years, even before "the game" was as it came to be known.
So it's no surprise to me that others also played this in their own head and told others about it.
In my version it was that I became very aware of the fact I had thought about something very specific (randomly, in my case one of the things was Roy Keane) and at some point, minutes, hours, months or years later I would think of this thing again. And this would then remind myself how long it had been.
Quite hard to articulate, and I played it silently in my own brain as a kid who spent a lot of time alone.
Supergoose5000@reddit
For fucks sake.

Thanks for all the answers. The fact it seems to be an Internet meme from around 2002 makes sense to me due to when I heard it.
Genuinely my apologies to all of you for this
NightBusToGiro@reddit
Bro you didn't have to remind me
yuelaiyuehao@reddit
Online it was a 4chan thing
No-Veterinarian-3916@reddit
Something some people made up as a scam.
whether it works or not is moot. it was one fo the first dating ideologies online that gained the rage and all the initial people have long discarded it or moved on, or even not with us anylonger i some cases.
blueroses8000@reddit
How is it a scam? I feel like you’re talking about something else entirely.
No-Veterinarian-3916@reddit
The Game was part of PUA. that was a scam.
scriptkiddie1337@reddit
Not at all. All the info was and is free on the sosuave forum. No need to pay
Gullible-Hose4180@reddit
Can you play it on linux and macOS ?
scriptkiddie1337@reddit
Leisure Suit Larry? Of course
blueroses8000@reddit
No idea what that is, but everyone else is only talking about a game where you try to forget about it. It’s not possible for anyone to scam you with that.
scriptkiddie1337@reddit
You mean the Michael Douglas film?
listo-@reddit
what the fuck are you talking about mate
Smittumi@reddit
That's a different thing.
walkwalkwalkwalk@reddit
He's not on about that book
nosnaheislehc@reddit

MissingScore777@reddit
I have absolutely no clue what OP or anyone else in this thread is talking about.
This is like the programmer running the Universe changed the code to have this 'Game' thing and forgot to upload to my brain.
lightjon@reddit
Ah damn I just remembered the game
teut509@reddit
Thanks to XKCD, I no longer worry about it

The only 'game' i know is The Game, where the object of thy game is to find out the object of the game.
Smeeble09@reddit
Damn it, now had to share this post with some uni friends.
ManInTheDarkSuit@reddit
Not sure where it comes from. I had it explained to me in 2002ish by some students in Birmingham. They said they'd invented it.
RowRow1990@reddit
Never thought I would dislike a stranger so much 😂
I have absolutely no idea about the origin, but I imagine they're proud of themselves every day for how many people's brains they invaded.
DidgeryDave21@reddit
It was a post on an anonymous forum called 4chan. We will likely mever truly know who came up with the idea
VolcanicBear@reddit
No, it was a thing before 4chan lmao.
EvilSandWitch@reddit
100%. I heard about it in school, a long time before 4chan or this internet thing.
vipros42@reddit
I feel pretty confident that it was a thing before 4chan.

That's such a strange thing. I saw a wonderful explanation of it on here, that really ripped into it.
It's best not to think about it, or you'll stop playing.
NoCatch2153@reddit
Ah so it's like the Penguin Game
blueroses8000@reddit

'The game', can essentially be tracked back to Rene Descartes, as it's basically an expression of his 'I think, therefore I am' principle on the truthfulness of existence.
One knows that they truly exist, because one experiences cognition at all.
'The game', is essentially a parody of this, where the objective is to avoid the most basic recognition of thought itself. To somehow defy human curiousity and remain un-aware. Thus, the 'game' itself, is the insatiable itch of thought.
Actual_Arrival7236@reddit
I don’t know but I’m losing the game.
I thought there were additional rules - if you are losing, you have to declare it out loud. And that, anyone who knows of the game is now participating.
Neither_Process_7847@reddit
That's it - you are playing, if you remember then you lose, losses must be publicly declared.
Neither_Process_7847@reddit
I just lost. Thats a years long winning streak ended now...
Often_Tilly@reddit
I heard it was because two people missed the last train and had to sleep overnight on the platform. They were trying not to think about their predicament. After the experience, they invented the game so that everyone else could relive their experience.
Evening-Situation-38@reddit
The story I heard was that it started with 2 guys stuck at a train station having missed the last train, they had a long wait for the first train the next day with nothing to do. They turned not thinking about how long it would be till the train into a game, when you thought about the wait/train you lost.
Lunaspoona@reddit
No idea but thanks for making me lose!
