What TV shows are you amazed are still going?

Prompted by seeing that Sunday Brunch is still on (for 3 bloody hours?!) what TV shows are you amazed are still going?
Grenache@reddit
I'm amazed Corination Street and the like still hit 4-5 million viewers really.
Sunday Brunch makes sense, like Sunday Morning people just chuck whatever on the TV and SB is cheap to make and not awful.
PipBin@reddit
Same with ‘stenders. Think back to the 80s and 90s and soap stars/ characters were household names. Grant and Phil Mitchell, Den and Angie, Jack and Vera, Hilda Ogden all massively famous.
I don’t think I could tell you who anyone in any of the soaps is now. I catch the end of episodes of Eastenders when I turn on for shows on afterwards and it’s dreadful. My friends sister is in Eastenders and I had no idea for years.
Boring_Piglet6778@reddit
Phil's still in it and Grant just came back this week to say goodbye to Nigel! if you remember him lol
The_Dark_Vampire@reddit
I know who Nigel is but honestly when I see the actor I think of Red Dwarf or Bottom first
Boring_Piglet6778@reddit
Forgot about this!
PipBin@reddit
Yeah I caught that while waiting for Race Across the World to start. I’m sure they put the old cast front and centre when they know old farts like me are waiting for other shows to start.
Boring_Piglet6778@reddit
Ha you could be right, I never thought about that
ThrustersToFull@reddit
Corrie’s heyday is now in the distant past. I tried to watch an episode recently and it was just… strange. Like a crap psychological drama combined with an episode of The Bill.
Bossman_Mike@reddit
You have regular cast members who are now so old they're dying of old age.
Grenache@reddit
Interesting, I might give it a whirl see how it is myself! Me and the Mrs were talking about Jack and Vera the other day. It was so massive when I was younger.
TheSilkyBat@reddit
I still remember how gripping it was when Richard Hillman went on his murder spree.
ThrustersToFull@reddit
Now it’s nothing but murder sprees and the odd terror attack thrown in too. It must be the most dangerous street in the world.
The_Dark_Vampire@reddit
You forgot affairs I don't even watch it but I know there is always at least one affair storyline happening all the time
Grenache@reddit
When was the last time TV was on the front of every tabloid? Man that was insane. I just read the wiki for his actor and apparently he came back in 2024 for Gail's exit hahaha. I need to watch that.
The_Dark_Vampire@reddit
Gail's gone.
Did she ever learn a new expression honestly no matter what happened she had the exact same bullfrog expression her entire family could be massacred or she could win 100 million on the euro and she would give the same face
BingeLurker@reddit
A couple had the ‘You & Me Song’ as their first dance at a wedding I was at. Great tune but I’m sure I wasn’t the only person thinking about THAT scene in Corrie.
TerpzArmy@reddit
I’ve never been so excited so for something. I honestly attribute it to by I like true crime so much now. There’d be 2 episodes on in one night, which was mad enough but they also separated each episode by like half an hour?
ThrustersToFull@reddit
Those were the days! Sadly long forgotten. I have no idea who is writing it now, or what they are trying to achieve, but it’s unwatchable.
Grenache@reddit
It's funny really because when they do take it off air I'll be all THAT'S OUTRAGEOUS HOW DARE THEY despite the fact I haven't watched it for 24 years. A bit like when they dropped Neighbours and I was also outraged.
rayoflight110@reddit
Corrie just looks so amateur now also. The acting is terrible and you can literally hear the Director shout action in a scene as everyone moves around, it's so cringe.
SamW1996@reddit
I was never a regular watcher but have kept up with some of the recent storylines and the Corrie subreddit and many people there are saying how difficult it is to watch.
A lot of the older episodes are on YouTube and I've watched many of those. The difference is like night and day.
ThrustersToFull@reddit
Yes some of the older plots are extraordinarily well done. The 1990-2010 years are the best IMO.
SamW1996@reddit
I wonder if it's because there were fewer episodes. Up until 1989 there were only two a week so storylines had more time to develop. With five a week now sometimes it feels like everything's on fast forward.
EldritchCleavage@reddit
Went downhill once Sharples went.
bumford11@reddit
I know someone who still watches it so occasionally I overhear it and yeah: from what I hear it's almost entirely about the police and crime at this point?
crucible@reddit
That put my late Mum right off it, she went from watching it religiously to not bothering with it at all for a few years.
The_Dark_Vampire@reddit
I stopped watching Coronation Street the episode Hilda Ogden left
AuroraDF@reddit
I used to watch every soap. I gradually cut them out until I'm just left with Corrie and Eastenders. Every so often I decide I'm only giving one or the other a months more and if it doesn't improve I'm giving it up. But I'm still watching . It's like a drug.
abgc161@reddit
I’m 28 and still religiously watch Corrie, think it’s just a bit of comfort blanket really. It’s not what it was but I think it’s been really good the last few months
Grenache@reddit
It's really interesting to me that you're 28 and super in to it! I had fully assumed it was 40 or so plus as the youngest.
abgc161@reddit
Yeah, I can’t say I have anyone in my life to discuss it with other than my parents/grandparents!
Grenache@reddit
That's cute though!
stevethos@reddit
I feel like when the boomers and even a chunk of gen x’ers die off then things like Corrie and Benders are gonna finally finish.
Every_Individual_25@reddit
Well this boomer only watches YouTube as regular TV sucks.
mdmnl@reddit
This isn't a dig in the slightest, I'm curious what do you watch?
I watch a lot of music videos (used to watch movie trailers but stopped) but not much else on YT.
Lazy-Contribution789@reddit
'Map men', you can see it's had a lot of time and thought put into each episode. It's a bit silly but also entertaining and educational.
Green-Ad6717@reddit
Eastenders
MarkWrenn74@reddit
Gardeners' World 🥱
No_Ring_3348@reddit
Points of View. It should be on a non-BBC channel ffs.
Lazy-Contribution789@reddit
I've not seen it in years, isn't it exclusively about BBC shows? Channel 4 used to have Right To Reply but not sure any other similar shows exist.
SD92z@reddit
Britains Got Talent. Its been going on so long, the little kids that appeared the early series are now fully grown adults knocking 30.
notlikeontv@reddit
It's all dance troops, dogs and their trainer, janky magicians and singers who if they were really good would have done something about it already with the occasional dash of idiots doing stupid stuff just to get on TV. It's literally the biggest load of shite
MoodyBernoulli@reddit
Plus they always have some Eastern European daredevil who hangs himself in the air on meathooks, or balances himself on a sword by his teeth.
notlikeontv@reddit
And then cuts to the judges and audience looking like their creaming their pants over how entertaining it is, from an unrelated pre filmed clip. And ant and Dec just stand at the side of the stage making faces getting paid stupid money. I don't understand why everyone rates it so much it's one of the shittest things that exists and I wish they would stop encouraging these jabronis to expose their weird kinky talentless selves Simon melted face cowel and fucking waste man KSI. Seriously Fu CK that show right in it's stupid face
heyjxdee@reddit
jesus tell us how u really feel 😂
hashbrowneggyolk0520@reddit
You forgot at least 3 choirs every episode too!!
iamNebula@reddit
My rents were watching recently, maybe 2 weeks ago and I stood and watched for a little bit. There was this amazing singer on then a group of children doing some group dance with their teacher. They got a gold button or whatever it is and not the other person.
It was fucking shit. Literally just them jumping around and crap. My nieces are the same age and are part of a dance group and them and their peers are great. I have no idea wtf this was and why it was loved. It’s pure tv bullshit. I am aware it’s essentially all ‘staged’ but that act? A gold button for that? It wasn’t even funny or entertaining just genuinely terrible.
Cringed me out so much I left after that.
Captaincadet@reddit
Problem is a proper sob story gets people to watch
But the people they have on tend to not be the best or haven’t had huge success out of the show, as if you win, your stuck into quite a crappy contract
It’s a show that your better off coming second than winning
AuroraDF@reddit
I went off BGT but somehow I've been sucked back in this series and they seem to have joined the format a bit to show fewer 'bad' contestants and actually have more which are in someway decently entertaining.
lime-enthusiast@reddit
I stopped watching talent shows like these because of people milking their sad backstories. I remember a few years ago the winner of America's got Talent was some mediocre magician who started each audition crying about the kids he adopted
Bubbly-Many5877@reddit
I kept flicking to it last night when watching the snooker, and didn't see a British act once! can we assume from this that Britain doesn't have talent!
cubesnack@reddit
Mrs. Brown's Boys - who watches this crap?
lime-enthusiast@reddit
My ex's family used to watch this and called me a snob because I didn't laugh at any of the jokes
bluenosekev@reddit
Didn't realise it had any jokes
MJLDat@reddit
There are jokes in it?
lime-enthusiast@reddit
If like a man dressed as an old woman saying "Feckin' eejit" every few minutes you're in for a treat
Icy_Pass_2639@reddit
My nan used to laugh at it a lot, she loved it! Not long after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, so maybe it's just a soft brain thing?
doesnt_like_pants@reddit
Thank god she’s an ex
explodinghat@reddit
That's why they're an ex
Dd_8630@reddit
Me and my partner watch it. Laugh our asses off. It helps that I have irish in laws from Belfast, so when they mock Belfast it tickles us.
I fully get why it's not for everyone. But it's just 3 wall slapstick comedy, which is a staple of comedy, from Blackadder to Mr Bean to the Miranda Show. Just dumb fun.
electricmohair@reddit
I’ve seen a couple of episodes, it’s not for me at all but I can see why people find it funny - especially older people who seem to be the target audience. With the way this sub seems to hate the show you’d think it was actively harmful or something
WeirdF@reddit
There are plenty of things I don't find funny but I can understand why other people might do. But I have no ability to comprehend how it is even possible to find Mrs Brown's Boys funny. It's honestly bizarre.
The_Dark_Vampire@reddit
Yeah for example I never liked Men Behaving Badly but I can understand why people do (Oddly I absolutely love Bottom which is kinda similar) but I will never understand why Mrs. Brown's Boys is supposed to be funny
Captaincadet@reddit
It was interesting when it came out, but there has been no evolution of the show and the comedy has also gone stale very quickly
The_Dark_Vampire@reddit
Honestly to me to comes across as a bad parody of a 70s sitcom with all the OTT tropes.
Note. I love 70s sitcoms but Mrs. Brown's Boys seems to have taken the bits people didn't like have gone OTT and left out the actual good bits
SuperDinkle406@reddit
Came here to say exactly this.
I am completely lost why it is not consigned forever to the shit-bin, dont-bother.
JayR_97@reddit
Boomers
Logical_Bake_3108@reddit
Nah, my parents are boomers and they think it's terrible.
Moomin_1291@reddit
Mine too.
flangeflangeflanges@reddit
Not all of us.
AuroraDF@reddit
I cannot bear that programme. Have never laughed at it once. Are they seriously still making it?
Dynamite_Shovels@reddit
No fucking way are they still making new episodes of Mrs Brown's Boys, that is actually mental - the Extras parody of it was like 20 years ago ffs
Kelsiersdaggers@reddit
Extras didn’t parody it. It wasn’t on when extras aired.
NuisancePenguin44@reddit
I think that's where they got the idea for Mrs Brown's Boys
cubesnack@reddit
I know!! Before posting I had to check the Wikipedia page and it says there clearly: Release 1 January 2011 – present.
I was gobsmacked.
stevenmorrish@reddit
So the Extras parody of it, predates it?!
cubesnack@reddit
There used to be a radio play in the nineties, and several other adaptations. One had Anjelica Huston in it apparently.
CantaloupeAway7125@reddit
My mum does unfortunately
ss2811@reddit
Loose Women. I’m surprised it still exists
Claretandblue82@reddit
It’s a show for a bunch of washed up celebs who can’t get on telly any other way.
Who else is going to employ the likes of Denise Welch and Nadia Sawalha!
As for Loose Men! Do fuck off!
bsidewinsagain@reddit
I'm a celebrity. Something bad will happen one day and they have to stop. It's a cruel program and in the future they'll look back and wonder have it was ever on telly.
Floyd_Pink@reddit
The Simpsons.
290Richy@reddit
Marge's voice sounds awful now.
She sounds like Deidre Barlow.
pajamakitten@reddit
More like Marge's mother when the show started.
Bossman_Mike@reddit
It's totally out of gas, but keeps getting recommissioned and I think they have no idea how to actually end it.
evenifihateit@reddit
Is it? I genuinely thought it had ended. Have I had a mandela effect moment?
bobbyroberts72@reddit
And yet Fox treated Futurama so badly, had it been allowed to run naturally we could have a few more seasons of real gold.
lime-enthusiast@reddit
I genuinely couldn't get into the seasons of Futurama released over the last couple of years. I could tell what they were trying to do but it juat didn't have the same magic
bumford11@reddit
Yes, the original four season run was perfect and with a perfect ending to boot. The four feature length episodes released afterwards were decent enough, but even then was stretching things. The subsequent seasons were not good.
bobbyroberts72@reddit
I agree, perfect describes those first 4 series, there is a handful of stand out episode after the films but before Disney+, The Late Philip J. Fry really hit home with good story telling and some heartfelt moments same as the feel of the original 4 series.
Really enjoyed A Clockwork Origin and Meanwhile ended that round of series off very well.
Looks like it’ll be Futurama on the TV tonight!
bickles_cab@reddit
I treat The Simpsons like two completely different TV shows. You have some of the best telly ever made in its season 2 - 9 heyday, but then after season 10 it just got slowly progressively worse. I refuse to entertain the idea of watching anything from the last 20 years, it's utter tripe now.
theotherquantumjim@reddit
There’s still funny moments. And maybe a really good episode every three seasons on average
Logical_Bake_3108@reddit
If that's the level then yeah, not good enough for a former all time great show.
carcrash12@reddit
Yeah for me The Simpsons is actually top tier TV up until Series 9 (and some of 10 if we're being generous) and then perfectly watchable up to and including the first movie. But they really should have made the movie the closing statement of the whole thing.
After that it gets real rough. I know people say there's some banger episodes these days but I struggle massively listening to some of the voice actors these days, Julie Kavner especially sounds beyond rough.
Logical_Bake_3108@reddit
90s Simpsons is one of the best shows ever made, forget just cartoons. If they had just called it a day after the movie I don't think too many people would have been upset (other than the people who make vast sums of money from keeping it going).
Dom-CCE@reddit
They'll never stop The Simpsons
piratemeow21@reddit
That's what I was gonna say. It's been unwatchable for years now, they need to stop
RandomUser22487@reddit
Big Brother, I remember going to see my mum a couple of months ago and she was watching it, and I was very surprised as I thought it had been axed years ago.

Absolute shite that has completely trashed the legacy of the originals. There are modern day "Whovians" who have never heard of Jon Pertwee.

Kelsiersdaggers@reddit
Counterpoint, it was always shite.
carcrash12@reddit
Honestly disagree. The first 2 series were actually quite unique. But once you had Katie Hopkins on with Series 3 it was all downhill and they really played up the drama and conflict from that point forward.
Longjumping-Toe-8643@reddit
Agreed. I really enjoyed the first series as it was something different. By the end of the second series you could see the contestants viewing it as an opportunity for a bit of fame. I didn't even bother finishing the third series.
55caesar23@reddit
I was a fan of the apprentice. By this series was terrible it’s getting more and more obvious how much they set them up to fail. It won’t let too long now I think
Bossman_Mike@reddit
For the first time since 2018 I didn't complete a season. Stopped cold turkey five episodes before the end of this one, didn't get round to watching them on iPlayer, decided actually I couldn't be bothered and didn't car. I still don't know why I started watching it in the first place, given I remember my friends getting excited over the show back in literally 2005-2006 when it was new and I had no interest at that time.
CatalunyaNoEsEspanya@reddit
It's obvious from the start getting "business" people to manufacture some foodstuff in half a day and then firing them for getting it wrong is crazy. It's not a necessary skill and demonstrates absolutely nothing. They have always prevented the marketing side from properly communicating with the product side of the team to manufacture drama.
Captaincadet@reddit
I know a few made millionaires who cannot stand the show. You get successful from learning from failures, not the other way around

BingeLurker@reddit
Sunday Brunch is the perfect Sunday morning show as it’s great background TV where you can drop in and out on a chilled Sunday, and there’s almost always 1 or 2 guests you’ll be interested in.
Definitely not a surprise it’s still on when you think about it. There’s a reason why BBC Two is a best bits of Saturday Kitchen and ITV is Alan Titchmarsh’s version.
ceciem2100@reddit
We ALWAYS have Sunday Brunch on in the background, Sunday morning wouldn't be the same without it.
Sgt_major_dodgy@reddit
I actually don't mind it tbh.
Lazy Sunday morning, sipping a coffee and seeing them make things and I'll say to my fiance "we should make this" and we watch it knowing full well we're never actually going to do it.

EastEnders, so poor
Anaptyso@reddit
I haven't watched it in at least ten years. Recently I was flicking around on the TV and saw it was on. It had loads of the same characters all having the same kinds of mundane and depressing conversations that they were having years ago.
HanAVFC@reddit
I watch it seasonally because it doesn't feel like Christmas to me without a trip to the queen Vic, then I kinda keep watching until march. I always manage to jump straight in and know most of the characters and within a few minutes work out the stories. It's kinda comforting, I've watched Ian Beale for the last 30 Christmases 😂🤦🏽♀️😂
SamW1996@reddit
I always found EastEnders at Christmas depressing. Charlie Brooker did a good review of it a few years ago.
HanAVFC@reddit
I mean it is depressing maybe that's what I enjoy the comfort of knowing it's going to be depressing 😂🤣🤷🏽♀️ it's sort of a habit now for me I've done it that many years 😅
SamW1996@reddit
Fair enough. 🙂 I guess the writers are consistent in that regard. 😂

Cash in the Attic, Homes under the hammer and all those myriad of shows that want to sell your old tat for £1.50
theabominablewonder@reddit
Some of these are great value for the production companies. Eg Bargain Hunt. They give the contestants a few hundred quid to go round a car boot sale, they then put all the stuff they buy into an auction. If they make a profit they keep the profit and if not they go home with nothing. The other day some contestants made a £3 profit, £1.50 each. The other group made a small loss. How many half hour long shows can get away with paying their contestants a total of £3? It’s ridiculously inexpensive. These will be the last shows to die.
And the refurbishment house flipping shows - they are not putting up any money but just filming people flipping houses for a profit and arranging an estate agent to provide a valuation.
Plus they then show them on repeats and sell old episodes to some of the less popular tv stations..
I’d love to know which shows are the cheapest or provide most viewers/minutes per pound spent. I bet these are all up there.
Captaincadet@reddit
That’s why it’s so popular. IIRC the actual half a hour of tv costs around £100k in the uk (evening shows really push it up) and bargain hunt costs about £10k ish to make per episode (experts have a appearance fee which is about £2k and you have to have some staff away to film it around the country, plus a little bit of research into good markers, contestants vetting etc)
For day time padding it’s really cheap

Agreed. The turning point for me was in the late-90s when Matt Groening decided to devote more time to creating Futurama. Coincidence or not, but the quality of Simpsons episodes dropped around the same time, and not just the one where Principal Skinner announced he was an imposter.
Thendisnear17@reddit
To be fair Matt Groening was never really involved that much.
It was the loss of some key writing staff.

zah_ali@reddit
Hmm interesting, never thought about the futurama aspect (especially as it got cancelled at one point?). I watched one of the more recent eps and I was shocked how bad it had gotten. Even the voices seem to have changed over the years. Oh and the hubbub over Apu’s character no longer being in the show. It’s all gone so down hill :(
Logical_Bake_3108@reddit
I didn't know they were making a new movie. That tells you how little I am keeping up with my former favourite TV show. Honestly, if they had called it a day after the first movie I don't think too many people would have been upset (other than the people who make vast sums of money from keeping it going).
zah_ali@reddit
Agreed, however, I felt the original movie was several years too late. I was an avid fan and was so hyped for it but the movie felt so meh to me.
The second one is due out early next year apparently. Will I complain about the Simpsons going downhill? Yes. Will I go to watch the second movie knowing it’ll probably be just as bad as the last several seasons? Also yes.

Are you suggesting things aren't what they seem and they're hiding something under the counter?

They are not literally selling things they shouldn't under the counter, but many are for money laundering by people who already have made money in not so legal ways.

I can’t stand all the morning TV, but it really takes the biscuit on weekends. Why does every channel having a cooking show?
Logical_Bake_3108@reddit
Cheap to make, one or 2 cameras, some lights and a set that they only have to make once. With current food prices let's see how long that remains sustainable.

Was about to say Dancing on Ice but just checked and apparently it's shelved for now at least. I fully expected that show to end with someone getting a life changing injury and everyone questioning why it was ever allowed.
Calm-Raise6973@reddit
Match of the Day. Now that clubs upload short and extended highlights to their YouTube page, and fan channels do better match analysis than on MotD, I wouldn't be surprised if it's axed in the next year or two.
Odd-Area-5148@reddit
Britain's got talent has managed to go on a lot longer than expected. Personally I think the golden buzzer overuse ruined it and now most of the act are professional and are almost certainly scouted the old days you had people like Paul Potts who was that regular guy working at a phone shop having a chance to apply and perform as a real person that was the idea when it started now you have acts who are good but with no emotional connection.
MajikChilli@reddit
Thats a pretty unfortunate name.

Love Island.

Surely most people are watching subscription streaming services?
I don’t have a tv licence so cannot watch live tv.
I can’t see younger generations going for tv and a tv licence when they get old enough to make the choice.
gander8622@reddit
If you gave me a subscription service that just had the menu of show thumbnails I'd get about the same use of subscription services as I do now. Nothing interests me.
Younger me would be totally confused at older me.

Away from the usual British shows, I have no idea how Grey's Anatomy is still running. My wife watches it religiously and despite 16 ish seasons of increasingly near death finales, AND the main character for which the show was named leaving, it still plods on

I used to love the Simpsons, yeah around early 2000s it went off a cliff, the animation is horrible now and it tries to be too clever, still love the older seasons though up until before the film and regularly watch them
