What's THE thickest yoghurt you can get in the UK?
Posted by Sidian@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 170 comments
I suppose Fage 5% is the gold standard, right? But is there anything that can beat it though, for thickness specifically? Thick enough you can stand your spoon up?
Virtual_Opinion_8630@reddit
You get greek yoghurt and you strain it yourself using a muslin cloth
Spifffyy@reddit
Or your wife’s used tights if you’re feeling spicy
Anandya@reddit
Store in olive oil after. You can also spice the yoghurt before you do that.
Virtual_Opinion_8630@reddit
what does the oil do apart from flavouring
Anandya@reddit
Preserves it. This is a dish called Labneh. Zataar or Sumac is used to spice it. It's eaten on flat breads.
siblingrevelryagain@reddit
Or an old/fashioned coffee filter paper
Or kitchen roll
Dependent_One6034@reddit
Using kitchen roll seems like a great way to eat some kitchen roll.
siblingrevelryagain@reddit
If you just let the yoghurt sit in it without disturbing it will be fine; once the liquid has strained out it’ll plop out in a disc (if you squeeze it it will fall apart, even the heavy-duty stuff!)
Particular-Fly-7783@reddit
Or old tights if you’re using it in something savoury
Acid_Monster@reddit
Some even come with their own yoghurt cultures still in them
thesteelmaker@reddit
You must have met my sister-in-law then.

Quite literally the answer, it would be thicker than anything brought from the shops

Danshep101@reddit
I do enjoy a thick fage
sophietheadventurer@reddit
Why do you want this? Why would anyone want a slice of yoghurt?
Sidian@reddit (OP)
Not THAT thick, I want it to thick enough that you'd be like 'yeah this is extremely thick' without it getting so thick that I'd be accused of going mad with my obsession for thickness.

The Estate Dairy 10% Greek Style Yoghurt
500g £2.95(£5.90 per kilo)
retardent@reddit
It's this, no other yogurt comes close. Plus it doesn't really go watery once opened like most yogurts.
NefariousnessNext840@reddit
Honestly it’s like eating ice cream for breakfast. It’s absolutely delicious and I highly recommend you try it with dark maple syrup and raspberry. It’s unreal.
Fit-Jellyfish1675@reddit
I've made Kefir like that before, it was slightly thinner than clotted cream.
Incredibly cheap and easy to make, would recommend using non metallic spoons and sieves though as the acid in it reacts with metal.
SampleOfHeaven@reddit
You can 10% with added whipping cream. Usually topped yoghurts.
zolo9@reddit
Proper greek yoghurt, not greek-style
friedeggbeats@reddit
Technically not a yoghurt, but Isey Baked Apple Skyr from M&S is as thick as you could want.

Nice_Conversations@reddit
Try quark. Lidl/Aldi often have it
autobulb@reddit
You can just strain any yoghurt you want into whatever thickness you want. When I used to make my own in 5 litre batches I strained them overnight for 8-10 hours and the result was the texture of cream cheese. I believe labneh is the regional variety that would describe it the best. There was almost no whey left that would separate when it sat in the fridge for a bit.
TonyBalonyUK@reddit
All of them. I have never seen any answer a single Mensa test question correctly.
mhl888@reddit
Go to any Turkish grocery and get the 10 or 14%. Cheaper and better than Fage, mostly made in Germany.
I'm quite partial to the brand 'Yayla'.
mata_dan@reddit
Yeah you have the get the ones from communitys like that, the "British" ones are complete garbage, and the fad "Icelandic" ones too.
You can only get real yoguty from Turkish/near east/Pakistani/etc. places and it's also far cheaper (my favourite is Pakeeza, still made in the UK).
RunningDude90@reddit
Wife bought dat free Greek yogurt the other day, it’ll hold a spoon up for sure
Crackers-defo-600@reddit
I think the Aldi Greek yogurt is fab
mata_dan@reddit
Pakeeza is the thickest one I've found, also generally the highest quality and tastiest, and pretty much the cheapest (meaning most of the others are basically a scam, like 50x markup or something).
buttmunch1416@reddit
Lancashire farm greek style is pretty thick
Fencingbear@reddit
Morrison's stock it round my way.
Great_Tradition996@reddit
I LOVE the Lancashire Farm one; sadly, it’s hard to get hold of (which is weird as I’m practically in Lancs). The Fage 5% Greek is my new go-to
luckyslife@reddit
Home Bargains has it reliably.
amytee252@reddit
I see it in Tescos

Great_Tradition996@reddit
I do sometimes send my husband to the Farm Foods across the road from his work but it’s hit and miss if they have it. I only like the Greek one; the ‘normal’ yoghurt isn’t the same

I love the Greek one. Hope you can get it

ZaharaWiggum@reddit
Does Skyr count? That’s v thick
Sidian@reddit (OP)
Yeah it counts, but I'm seeing conflicting reports of whether it's actually thicker than strained/Greek yoghurt like Fage.
jamesdownwell@reddit
Proper skyr is absolutely thicker than Greek yoghurt (Fage).
NigeIFarage@reddit
Coop Skyr does the job. 450g for 2.30 as well so fairly priced
ZaharaWiggum@reddit
I can’t eat Skyr with cereal, it turns into cement. Is that the thickness you’re after?
smay1989@reddit
Skyr and granola is great - other cereal not so much
rakadiaht@reddit
you can add water to skyr to thin it down first. defeats the point of this post though.
Fyonella@reddit
Skyr is also strained, it’s thicker than Fage in my experience (and nicer).

I don’t know how it compares to fage, but Aldi’s Greek yoghurt is pretty thick compared to other supermarket brands. You can always throw in a bit of psyllium husk powder to thicken it up more and get some additional fibre to boot if you need it ridiculously thick.
humanswithnohumanity@reddit
Graham's Dairy protein pouches are thick but that's Quark so I guess that counts as cheese rather than yoghurt. Not to be confused with the subatomic particle.
porcupineporridge@reddit
Yeah, I think the answer to OP's question is Skyr but if OP isn't a purist then quark is the answer.
Necessary-Glove-3333@reddit

There's an M&S 10% fat that I think would hold a spoon up. It's in a tub with a black label.
cheshirecatbus@reddit
Yeah pretty much all the supermarkets do a 10% fat greek yoghurt in the big fat tub. Even Aldi. Not sure how people missed it?
NefariousnessNext840@reddit

APiousCultist@reddit
I can't relate to this. I've had skyr or high protein yoghurt and it's just so dry and heavy. Like eating cement. Greek style is as far as I think any man or woman should take things. But on that front I guess I can recommend the high protein stuff as thicker in my experience - at least the Aldi ones I tried.

snaphunter@reddit
Just strain overnight whatever cheap yogurt you have access to. It'll be quite solid, so add a little of the whey back in to loosen it up to the consistency you want.
Figure8712@reddit
You've not even found the 10% yet? Where have you been looking, the bakery? Every shop I've been has their house version. You can get 'thicker' but usually they are using some added gelling agent. Naturally the thickener is the fat. Go get some 10%.
akarxqueen@reddit
My local Greek butcher sells 10% Greek yoghurt, it’s so thick like set cream or something. Nothing like I’ve seen before

Marks and Spencer’s Greek yoghurt 0% fat (specifically) is so thick it tears (tears like fabric not tears like crying) when you lift the spoon, and keeps its shape. Spoon does stand up, can confirm.

I made some yoghurt the other day and then strained it for 2 days. It was so thick that my husband described it as chewy. It was basically like yoghurt flavoured soft cheese.
B0-Katan@reddit
Labneh? If you strain greek yoghurt you can make it
Sidian@reddit (OP)
That might actually be too thick, we might have crossed into dangerous territory with that. All the images on Google are eating it with, like, bread. I still want to eat this with berries and stuff!
ParamedicSouthern842@reddit
Fage has got the kind of thickness that it also holds it's shape unless you break it up by mixing it around. Labneh is basically the next stage of thickness from the fage you are used to, just mix in a bit of honey instead of salt and it will be a bit looser than what you have seen online. You will have to make it by hanging it in a muslin cloth to let the whey drip out, a few hours should do the trick
GayAttire@reddit
Was going to say labneh. Lovely stuff, that.
Mickxomatosis@reddit
Buy a huge tub of full fat plain yoghurt, empty it into some cheesecloth or not too thick tea towel, over a bowl, and leave it for a few hours (or overnight) in the fridge. The liquids strain out and you’ll have yog so thick you’ll be able to demolish a low quality conservatory with it. Don’t pay premium, DIY strained yog is better, that’s how the Greeks do it, kings of yog.
Icy_Distribution3467@reddit

I know this is a controversial statement to make in a question about yoghurt, and I'm not a vegan myself (although I am always happy to try the good vegan things!) but the Oddly Good vegan desserts are THICK, so thick you could probably stand all of your household spoons in it at once. They are reminiscent of a thick greek yoghurt, but obviously because of all the vegan labelling laws they have to call it a vegan dessert. I'm addicted to the fuckers, they are so rich, creamy and thick, I'm basically on one-a-day at the moment, it's a problem.

The Aldi 500g vanilla protein greek yogurt. You literally have to chew it.
Psychedelia_Smith@reddit
We make our own in the instant pot these days. We like it thicker than most commercial is sold out in the UK and eat a lot so this is way cheaper.
We strain it through muslin cloths for about 4 hrs.
Occasionally, when we buy yoghurt, we also strain it. Selling well strained yoghurt costs the manufacturers more which is why we get runnier yoghurt sold than many of us would like.
Straining is very easy.
cine@reddit
This is my favourite brand, it's super thick with a very nice texture. Better and thicker than any Greek yoghurt I've tried.

The Aldi version of Fage has higher protein. Also M&S do a high protein version. These are likely to be thicker than Fage.

They wrap it in clean muslins and put a weight on it and leave it overnight and it in the morning it’s like playdough thick
A-Llama-Snackbar@reddit
I'm yet to find anything that tops these from LIDL. There's also other flavours of the same thickness, but you gotta be careful cause they sell them in multipacks and they're not the same consistency as these individual ones with foil lids. 10/10 imo
Mrslinkydragon@reddit
Lidl 10% fat Greek yoghurt, or look in eastern European stores and look for sheep, buffalo or goat yoghurt in a glass jar!
deadeyes1990@reddit
Probably labneh tbh. Or just strain Greek yoghurt overnight in muslin/coffee filters and it gets absolutely ridiculous. Fage is good, but if you want “spoon standing up like it pays rent” thick, strained yoghurt is the move.
