It's funny, in the 90s, as imperfect as things may have been, there was a genuine sense of moving together, and of race not really mattering so much anymore, that we were all kind of one nation. 30 years later and the left is so intensely racially obsessed they would make a KKK grand wizard blush, and the right starts to gain ground with minorities somehow. I think things really started to run badly off the rails sometime in the early 2010s. We'd been wobbling a bit for a few moments before, but it was this point where it seems we collectively decided to throw our hands up and agree that we actually aren't one nation or one people or one anything, just lots of factions competing to be the biggest victims of the majority. I thought Obama being president might be a moment where we could all be like "see? we put the past in the past, here is a black man leading the nation" and it seemed to achieve the opposite of that.

Being a 90s kid, I can certainly attest that social media literally broke people's minds. The crazies and fringe schizo ranters that you normally saw (and then laughed at) around train stations now suddenly had a platform, reaching millions of people. And the algorithms just fuelled their nonsense, polarising a lot of impressionable young people starting their internet journey, post 2007.
