Retiring in the Philippines?

My wife and I are both from the US originally, but both of us went to high school in the Philippines (IS Manila) in the '70s -- during Marcos, martial law, the whole thing; a lot of amazing experiences.
Our kids are now grown and we're facing retirement soon, so the topic of possibly retiring there (Manila, Baguio, Cebu, or nearby most likely) has come up afew times.
Any other ex-pats doing this? Positive or negative experiences, especially for those already somewhat familiar with the country and culture?
TIA!
