Spirit airlines pilot seniority

Will Spirit airlines pilots have their seniority and pay reset if they join another airline? Would the majors make any sort of exception?
TSwiftIcedTea@reddit
Yes it will be reset. I’m not sure airline management is allowed to make exceptions even if they wanted to.
There has been discussion in the past about a national seniority list to prevent this from happening, but there are a lot of concerns to be addressed before a system like that can ever be implemented.
I’m open to the idea if done right.
Arcas0@reddit
That’s not seniority, it’s just age discrimination.
0621Hertz@reddit
Downvoted to oblivion just for questioning status quo lmao. No rebuttals.
That’s peak r/flying for you.
I don’t downvote opinions but I personally don’t think the system currently in place is “perfect”, but definitely the “least worst.”
If there was a “national seniority list”, all of Spirits senior pilots would have left to a legacy years ago. They understood the assignment when they decided to ride it until the end.
I never heard of this movement you’re referring to but I’d imagine this was set up by extremely upset TWA/Pan Am crews.
TSwiftIcedTea@reddit
This is actually pretty funny because nothing about this is controversial. Just stated a fact and that I was open to considering it. Didn’t even state an opinion.
Shinsf@reddit
To come in with seniority is called a merger. We liquidated.
Weasel474@reddit
Best of luck, man. Hope to see y'all get picked up quick.
Shinsf@reddit
I thank you for the well wishes. Many are happy about it but over the years you learn to ignore social media. Was a great place to work.
Fuck you Ted Fuck you bendo Thanks for trying Dave

This really isn’t a bad thing for a lot of spirit pilots. Many of them will be getting early promotions to the big ones. Of course there will be many not as fortunate and out of jobs for some time too
redditburner_5000@reddit
100% seniority. 0% merit.
If your airline fails, you're out of work and you need to go get hired like anyone else. That makes you a "new hire" and to the bottom you go. This is how pilots can end up spending a good chunk of a career at the bottom. A couple unlucky job choices and all of a sudden you're talking a decade or two of lost seniority.
Another example is the case of America West rescuing the failed garbage pile known as USAir, and then the self-serving USAir manchildren twisting every which way to try to screw the America West pilots out of their rightful positions on the list. The USAir villains ultimately lost, but the merger with American made the America West pilots' righteous victory mostly moot.
A healthy merger is the only way I can think to preserve your seniority when your airline disappears.
Spiritual_Ad5511@reddit
Yes, No exceptions
Nice_Young_4188@reddit
Does this exist for Legacies? Like a 10+ year captain at Spirit would they be able to get a direct entry job at a legacy and start out as a year 1 captain instead of year 1 FO?
Bot_Marvin@reddit
United had something similar, a “Near Entry Captain” where you would get awarded a captain slot and upgrade after 12 months as an FO.
Ok-Money2811@reddit
Only reason you see that is FOs with some longevity didn’t want to upgrade because they are making close to if not more than captain pay without having the garbage quality of life of a junior captain.
I lived that life a long time, making more than 1/2 the captains in base and had a stretch of 2.5 years never seeing the inside of a hotel room.
Several-Village5814@reddit
Nope
Charming-Accident407@reddit
United was a 2nd tier airline there for a hot minute
AtariFerrariNH@reddit
If you are referring to the ability for people to be awarded a captain slot during initial training, that is not the same as a DEC.
Charming-Accident407@reddit
Good point forced new hire upgrades crazy times
EpicRedhead13@reddit
I always wondered what the catch was for direct entry. Thanks.
SSMDive@reddit
No. A pilot hitches to the company. The company fails and then that pilot has to start over at the bottom.
How would it be fair if you had worked for airline. ‘X’ for 10 years and were just going to get that upgrade to captain you have always wanted and then because some other airline ran itself into the ground you suddenly are back sitting reserve as an FO because all their pilots got placed above you?

“Fate is the Hunter” should be required reading. This is Gann talking about how one of his heroes was now flying as his co-pilot because life put him at the bottom of a seniority list even though his skills and experience would have him commanding the flight.
“On an October night, aloft once again between Honolulu and the mainland, my everlasting dispute with the numbers approached sheer fury. For beside me there sat a man victimized by the numbers, else he would never have been my co-pilot. This man was Howe, whose name was nearly a legend. He was a contemporary of Sloniger's and there was in his logbook over seventeen thousand honest hours. Howe had barnstormed in Jennies, flown the mail with Lindbergh, and stayed faithfully with his devotion until at last, it seemed, he had saved enough to retire. But his business skill failed to match his flying ability. So now this veteran, returned to the only way of life in which he was a true master, was obliged to serve as my co-pilot. The most simple arithmetic argued against his flying captain again until he was a hundred years old. Because Howe had been flying when I was in knee pants, our relationship was both difficult and embarrassing. It was like an upstart peasant commanding a prince of the realm and Howe's gratitude for my respect seemed only to make matters worse”
StangViper88@reddit
What the fuck makes you think that would be fair or justified?
Ok_Excitement725@reddit
There would be a mutiny the likes of which no one could even fathom if any airline let them come in with accrued seniority.
As someone said, they can get preferential interview slots but unfortunately, even if they interview tomorrow at most places they won’t be sitting in a class for potentially 4-6 months yet. It’s going to be a rough time for many of them, I hope they all land on their feet
Necessary_Topic_1656@reddit
if the individual is 55, they can access their last employers 401k only (not IRAs or any other 401ks) and take distributions from their Spirit 401k without the 10% early distribution penalty. instead of having to wait to 59.5 to access the 401k. they still have to pay ordinary income tax on the 401k distribution.
Biker1124@reddit
And this is why you keep an emergency fund of 6 months. Most industries you can get away with 3 but not this one.
melloboi123@reddit
I'd even go as far as to say 6 months of cold hard cash and then another 6 months in some relatively liquid investment.
Ok_Excitement725@reddit
That’s true. Sadly I’d say many probably do not have this. I’m sure there will be plenty that will have to dip into their 401k and pay the penalties associated to get by in the near term.
sell_out69@reddit
Back to the bottom of the list.
The only exception I can think of is if they worked for the same airline prior to Spirit and their union contract allows them to "freeze" their seniority if they return within a year.
braided--asshair@reddit
Seniority resets. Longevity pay, that depends on the airline. Envoy is doing longevity if they have prior 121
Several-Village5814@reddit
Why would they get seniority at another airline? Could you imagine being a 5 year CA at United and suddenly someone jumps ahead of your in seniority because they were furloughed from another company? How would that make any sense?
FlowerGeneral2576@reddit
They start at the bottom of the seniority list and pay-scale. They couldn’t make an exception if they wanted to. There’s no way to do that and have it be fair to the pilots already on property.
Nyaos@reddit
Its always back to the bottom when you go to a new airline. The only preferential treatment pilots might get is a front of the line to interview somewhere else.
