Captain Jon Jackson of Spirit Airlines was supposed to take his final retirement flight today. After Spirit's shutdown, he instead was a passenger on a Southwest flight into Baltimore. There, Capt. Jackson was given the traditional water cannon salute and a surprise welcome party at the gate.

From Southwest's instagram:
"Today was supposed to be Capt. Jon Jackson’s retirement flight with Spirit Airlines. After the airline’s sudden shutdown, he found himself heading home as a passenger, seated in the back of a Southwest flight with his son, Chris, a Southwest First Officer.Chris casually mentioned to the flight’s Pilots that this would have been his dad’s retirement flight. They seized the opportunity to change the course of the day for Capt. Jackson. They alerted Dylan, a Southwest Dispatcher, setting into motion a plan that resulted in a proper retirement party when the flight landed in Baltimore. The Baltimore Airport Fire & Rescue met the aircraft with a traditional water cannon salute, and the Baltimore Ground Operations Team was waiting at the gate to welcome him with cheers and bottle of bubbly.
It was a powerful reminder of the aviation community’s ability to show respect, compassion, and solidarity when it matters most. Above all, this moment was about honoring a fellow aviator. Congratulations, and thank you for your service in the skies, Capt. Jackson."

Hopefully he will get his pension
Awol540@reddit
401k. Spirit does not have a pension plan
dmcnaughton1@reddit
This is why I'm a fan of 401ks over pensions.
SnooSketches8925@reddit
In general I think pensions are better except for that one horrific drawback. Company goes out. What if we took the state pension systems and let private companies join?
teapots_at_ten_paces@reddit
That's a really awesome thing Southwest has done for Captain Jackson. As much as the airlines have commercial competitiveness, it's great to see there's respect between the people.
UnhingedCorgi@reddit
The executives are competitive. Us rank and file wage workers look out for each other.
pile-of-bricks@reddit
Yeah i can almost guarantee this was put together by the station manager or even just below and above the wing supervisors. (im seeing a lot of rampers in the terminal there.) probably with cooperation with the pilots. NOC might have given their approval but they certainly didn't orchestrate it.
monkeyinheaven@reddit
What a nice reminder that people are mostly kind and generous. I just feels like everybody sucks nowadays.
AffectionateWrap2147@reddit
That was a classy thing to do. Definitely old school!
Euhn@reddit
There is good left in humanity.
onisamsha@reddit
You're definitely correct. But it isn't the CEOs of either company putting this on.
zxc123zxc123@reddit
CEOs probably thinking how they could cut more jobs, fit the word "AI" more into their quarterly conference calls, and pay themselves even more than 100x their employees.
Horskr@reddit
I had not heard of the water cannon salute before and was waiting for a bunch of people to unload with super soakers when he finished talking.

SAME
Kind_Advisor_6969@reddit
An important thing for us to remember in times like this.
Distinct-Poet3032@reddit
Was he at least riding jump seat?
PilotKnob@reddit
No, they removed Spirit from CASS immediately and so were unable to occupy the cockpit jumpseat. They are still able to occupy cabin seats as "jumpseaters" and therefore are considered acting crewmembers though. There was a read before fly message regarding this.
Floatsm@reddit
no. they technically weren't able to be cleared. I'm not sure the reason but supposedly it's because they can't be cleared appropriately through CASS. An email was sent out among the airlines on how to beat get them home but JS wasn't an option
b_e_a_n_i_e@reddit
Would they at least let him in the cockpit for the water cannon salute?
Floatsm@reddit
I would hope! if I had to guess (and really only a guess) I would say they coordinated with the flight attendants so he knew it's all for him. otherwise why do it. But I suspect he wouldn't be allowed in
AnnualZealousideal27@reddit
Hopefully 11A.

Pwnaholic@reddit
Air India flight AI-171 had one survivor while the other 242 souls on board did not. He was seated in 11A.
Pacman35503@reddit
Good for that pilot, what a huge pivot from "man Im sure no one give a shit" to surprise party. Good for him.
Nadamir@reddit
I’m actually really impressed with how quickly it happened.
Spirit was only domestic so let’s call this a five hour flight at most (LAX to BWI is about that).
In that time, they wrangled a water cannon salute and a welcome party at the gate. And booze.
It seems like everyone involved dropped everything to do this.
MaverickTTT@reddit
I know the SWA dispatcher who helped put a lot of this into motion and I’m zero-percent surprised he was able to pull it off. He’s tenacious and has a heart of gold.
Fun fact: Southwest keeps bottles of champagne on-hand at most of their stations for things like passengers heading somewhere to get married, celebrating a milestone anniversary, etc.
Throwaway1098590@reddit
That’s so kind of Southwest to do that.
Hats off to everyone involved.
exzyle2k@reddit
Hopefully he was in the cockpit for the water cannon salute, so he'd see it from the same perspective he would have received had Spirit waited one more day.
Ok_Row_8391@reddit
But the CEO got 3.8 Billion bonus. What a day. /s
Congrats to Capt. Jon Jackson.
exzyle2k@reddit
CEOs get a golden parachute while the workers get a cinder block tied around their ankle.
Lazy-squirrel642@reddit
Always that one retard that doesn’t understand how corporate bonus or pay structures work.
First off I’m sad they shut down. I’m a 91 guy waiting to get to 121 and have 2 friends at spirit. So this is a legit answer to your dumb fucking response.
They get these bonuses in order to stay with a sinking ship and make sure everything gets handled properly during a shutdown. If their pay just ended immediately they’d say fuck it and go to another company asap, but the company needs someone willing to stay on to help with liquidation, disbursements, etc.
God damn people like you are ignorant (and stupid) as fuck.

In the airline industry we may fight and pick on each other like brothers and sisters but at the end of the day that’s what we are, family.
sailphish@reddit
Good for him. This whole thing is so wild to me though, that an entire airline just shut down with no notice. I would have assumed they would’ve phased out over sometime. Maybe future flights canceled, but at least fulfill their immediate obligations.
Reddit_2_2024@reddit
Thank you Southwest Airlines! A wonderful salute to Capt. Jackson.

Big_OOOO@reddit
Can he get unemployment on top of his pension now?
mrvarmint@reddit
Is the pension plan adequately funded? My immediate thought was whether he’s gonna get the retirement he expected at all
Spectrum1523@reddit
Spirit did not offer a pension plan
ni42ck@reddit
Just like Bluestar airlines: the pension fund was over founded.
Awol540@reddit
Spirit doesn’t have a pension plan. 401k based retirement

Will these pilots receive their pension or retirement benefits from Spirit?
Awol540@reddit
No pension at spirit but they do have a 401k.
GuaranteeUnhappy3342@reddit
I medically retired a bit early and rather unexpectedly so no celebration or water cannon salute. But someone must be chopping onions here…and I am on my bed petting a cat!
Darn onions!

danit0ba94@reddit
Has he been screwed out of his retirement because of this? 🥺😭
rob_s_458@reddit
I would assume Spirit had a 401k with a brokerage in which he was fully vested, so outside of his last paycheck, he has everything he's owed
Jumpy-Locksmith6812@reddit
Would that typically be in a fund or all in the airline?
danit0ba94@reddit
Excellent. Ty.
Different-Pin-9854@reddit
Very nice thing to do for him, Happy Retirement!

Used to work for United Airlines and saw a water cannon salute once out on the ramp. It is an awesome tradition!

I for some reason was expecting that they were going to directly blast him with the water canon in the terminal

My dumbass saw the champagne and thought he was about to water cannon the gate with it. Then it cut to the fire trucks and I realized I know nothing about aviation lol

I hope there was an announcement prior the plane was landing. Had it been me in a plane when the water cannons go off... friggen panic!

I love SWA. Lots of negativity on them for becoming more like other airlines. This shows there is hope their underlying essence lives on.
