The studio had no idea how to market it. It was universally panned by critics because Dann DeVito was ahead of his time. It's one of my all time favorites. I had a similar expereince watching this I did The Big Lebowski for the first time. I just sat there for a second wondering what the hell I had just watched, and then immediatly watched it again.

It got buried by bad reviews and word of mouth and when you see it you’ll know why; it’s not a bad film it was just outside of its time. Nowadays it would be received differently, by both critics and moviegoers but definitely received better by audiences.

It is a bizarre, unhinged fever-dream film, but held up well even though it has stayed super niche. If you love Robin though it is just a must. It definitely is in the darker subset of his work along with like, One Hour Photo, and Insomnia.

He was so talented and had such depth. RIP

Man, same here. No one has seen this fucking movie. I saw it randomly on HBO I think during one of their old school sales for like 6 months or whatever it was, that was like 100 years ago. Instant classic for me. How this never became a cult classic is beyond me.

Just did a rewatch with friends. The cast in this movie is incredible and it surprised my friends they had never heard of the movie before.
I saw it in theaters and didn’t really get it. The second time I watched it I understood the dark comedy aspect of it and it clicked with me. I really like Devito’s style.
