Upgrades for 1440p

About last year i sort of impulse bought a 1440p monitor. And now that i am here i dont have a pc that cant perform in very many games. it is a 3600 and a 1070ti with 16gb 3200.
I am wanting to upgrade to a 5800x and i just dont know what gpu to upgrade too. i really dont want to spend over $400 and im going nvidia no matter what i know the price to performance is no where near as good as AMD but i just cant see myself buying an AMD gpuðŸ˜. i have been looking at the 3080 but with my 650w psu which i dont want to upgrade right now i dont think thats a viable option as of right now, will the 3070 be good for mid-high tier 1440p gaming? I rarely play triple a games on my pc and just use my ps5 for those. if games that i play help, i like to play:
Games like Ready or Not
Schedule 1
Fortnite
Minecraft
Roblox (don’t diss)
Cod
And honestly just other random steam games like that. i dont try really test my pc i just want to be able to play most games i want without even having to worry about specs. any help will be greatly appreciated!

Try to grow up emotionally first, and instead of feelings, make logical decisions. You either do that, or have the money to pay for unnecessary things, but not both. You would also benefit this in other parts of life but just PC builds. I'm not mocking you, just something to think about.

hey op! if youre okay with going the used route the 3060 still performs amazingly with a 5600x on my brothers pc. I remember running elden ring full settings at 55-60 fps in the most graphically demanding area in the game at 1440p. it was an msi ventus 2x OC (oc = factory overclocked)

a 3080 fits perfectly with the 5800X and isn't badly priced, as they sit around 300~350 USD.

Just go amd the rx 9060xt 16gb should be perfectly in your budget.

Instead of just shoving AMD down OP's throat after they specifically said they'd go with Nvidia no matter what, I'm rather interested to hear OP's reasoning as to why they're so married to Nvidia?

honestly thanks for backing me up lol but it’s more of a trust sort of thing that his been sort of built in me since i got into this hobby. i’ve never even considered amd at all just because of the things i’ve heard about driver support and i know it’s gotten a lot better it’s just always been iffy to me. there’s really no good reason it’s just that i’ve always been an nvidia sort of guyðŸ˜

I have always been a AMD guy for the exact same reasons as you. I am VERY happy with my 9700XT gpu and recommend all upgraders to follow the AMD cpu/gpu path if only for cost.
Biene1111@reddit
OP's reasoning is being a kid who probably heard from one of his friends that amd is bad or something along those lines. I just was trying to give him the objectively best option for his budget.

One good reason would be to consider how AMD handled FSR with RDNA2/RDNA3 cards, basically forcing average user to use optiscaler for upscaling that is acceptable quality. Imagine buying 7700XT in 2024 just for the support for it to go on maintanence mode 2 years later.
Who says they won't do the same thing with the RDNA4 cards and FSR 4.5? While AMD cards are great value, calling anyone not buying AMD kid without knowing their actual reasoning is dumb.
9060XT is good option in their budget, but I understand if someone wants to go Nvidia.

I have a 3080 and it runs those games fine

yea it’s like my no brainer i’m just worried about the psu

Go with a Ryzen 5 5600 for the CPU. The 5800X only delivers around a 7–10% performance gain, but costs nearly 2.5 times as much, so it’s poor value. For the GPU, aim for an RTX 3070, or step up to a 3080 if your PSU can handle it. Also, if you’re buying used, make sure to check the card’s thermals carefully.

I think a 3080 can run on a 650W PSU, as long as your CPU isn’t too power-hungry. If you’re going with something like a Ryzen 5 5600, you should be fine, but it’s still worth double-checking to be safe.

i have the msi mag a650bn. would the 3080 be fine with that and the 5800x or should i just hold off on that for now (the 3080) and settle for a 3070?
rucekooker@reddit
Nah go for the 3080, its 26% stronger than the 3070. really noticeable in few cases.

Get a refurbished 3070 or something like that.
