Reminds me of y2k, I was at a massive rave that night and my future wife bailed and didn’t want to go, I was on a pay phone with her doing the countdown and we were both a little disappointed we didn’t hear some static or cutting out or anything
Bob_Spud@reddit
Some us were stuck in data centres waiting for the sky to fall in. As for 1777777777 its lunch time for me, I'll munch on it.
ansibleloop@reddit
We're only 12 years away from Y2k38
I can see a lot of stuff breaking - underlying 32 bit components of a larger system just failing
Mclarenf1905@reddit
It's going to be a nothing burger just like y2k
8BFF4fpThY@reddit
y2k was only a nothing burger because billions was spent to make sure of it.
Mclarenf1905@reddit
Yea and a ton of money has already been spent to migrate away from 32 bit time keeping. Fact is there just isnt nearly as much time crucial code as people make it out to be. Will some stuff break, sure that's a given, but there's not going to be some catastrophic failure and the migration in many many systems is very easy.
HappyDadOfFourJesus@reddit
Back then I worked in academia networking, my boss and I had done all our testing six months prior, but our bosses were on edge about it, so we both scheduled automated emails to our bosses about fifteen minutes after midnight saying that everything looked good so we were calling it a night, even though we'd already been asleep for several hours by that point.
neoh4x0r@reddit
Yeah, the Y2K-bug would have been a much bigger deal if no one had said anything about it.
Frothyleet@reddit
It's like how the ozone layer was being destroyed by CFCs and in the 90s a bunch of countries banded together to ban them, and halted much of the destruction, and now people point to that as an example of "alarmism".
skipITjob@reddit
Hence why people think it wasn't a problem.
neoh4x0r@reddit
Better to let them think that way rather than sitting back and watching the world burn.
Ssakaa@reddit
So I recently thought about this... and I think that may be incorrect. An awful lot of today's societal issues are completely built on the success of the Y2K mitigation.
If the IT world hadn't taken up that fight ahead of time, there would've been a lot of disruption in tech-dependent industries, banking, travel, etc. systems, many of which are still using "older" tech today. That bigger, visible, impact would've slowed markets and possibly even delayed or avoided the dotcom bubble collapse. Giving that first major tech bubble a smoother offramp might've protected our entire space launch industry, among other things, and might've slowed some of the "pivot to something more stable" knee-jerk that lead to heavier gambles in real estate and related lending, that caused the 08 crash. That first bubble smoothing out might've left more competition for the Google and Amazon world, maybe offset or delayed social media a bit, etc...
So all in all, maybe letting it all burn a bit then would've helped avoid everything burning now, at least, quite as badly as it is...
neoh4x0r@reddit
I don't think that would have done any good....it's like decapitating someone to avoid them having to deal with their headache because they don't want to take any medicine.
Ssakaa@reddit
It's less decapitation and more... breaking a few kneecaps to ensure the majority of the crowd can get away from the angry bear...
JaspahX@reddit
Looking forward to Y2K38 myself.
NotABadPirate@reddit
Exactly!! We broke our asses to make it a “nothing burger!”
Antoine-UY@reddit
I am. Thanks for drawing my attention to it. You rock !
Upstairs-Gur-6692@reddit (OP)
I almost missed it too but I also realized 1888888888 isn't too far as well
8BFF4fpThY@reddit
1778675309 Is on the 13th - should we tell Jenny?
Smooth-Zucchini4923@reddit
What do you mean? It's 4 years away.
paishocajun@reddit
Considering Y2K was 26 years ago, 4 ain't that much
winky9827@reddit
Over on the North American continent, 4 years seems like an eternity.
badaccount99@reddit
And I feel old.
I got super drunk that night after having spent like a year upgrading things. Was fun and nothing broke!
But a ton of alter table commands and code changes to change stuff happened in advance and dumb people say y2k wasn't important. It was.
All our stuff would have been broken if we didn't get out in front of it.
paishocajun@reddit
Yup, sadly the ol' maintenance curse of "shit's not broke, why do we pay you?" mentality
natefrogg1@reddit
It’s why shit needs to fail sometimes, just joking of course (-:
spaetzelspiff@reddit
And 2147483647 is only 8 years past that! 🎉
paishocajun@reddit
What's that one?

Upstairs-Gur-6692@reddit (OP)
I meant to say that 1777777777 isn't a once in a lifetime neat number. It's a bit late here
RexxMainframe@reddit
How did I almost miss that?
11b328i@reddit
What the fuck is a Unix epoch
acurtis85@reddit
Seconds since Midnight January 1, 1970 which is how Unix keeps time.
11b328i@reddit
Cool! Thanks
goobervision@reddit
And the y2k bug was the count potentially rolling over to zero.
All UNIX and Linux based systems use this. From MacOS, Android and all the Linux and BSD platforms.
cgimusic@reddit
No, that's not correct. Y2K affected systems that stored dates in regular Gregorian calendar representation but with a two digit year, meaning that the 1st of January 2000 (00-01-01) would appear older than the 31st of December 1999 (99-12-31).
There is a similar Y2K38 problem that will occur when the unix timestamp will overflow to 0 when stored as a 32 bit integer, but that will not occur until the 19th of January 2038.
goobervision@reddit
correct, I mixed up my excitement for the next iteration for my retirement.

Though the time and date display function will need to be modified in OpenVMS at some point before 9999-12-31, the internal clock won't have a problem until 31086-07-31T02:48:05.47.
