These damn sandals were a fashion requirement in my jr high/high school.

I feel like this is one thing that hasn’t come back with the 90s/“y2k” fashion rebirth. These were THE SHOE all the girls wore when I was in 7th grade through early high school (96-99ish?). I remember they got stinky so fast because of course sandals with socks was an abomination.
likesblackcoffeebest@reddit
I had the knockoffs from Payless and wore them with my LEI flare jeans when I was in high school. Loved these things!
thatSeveryonedraws@reddit
I had these from payless too and I remember them making my feet stink and they made fart sounds when I walked. I wore them anyway.
FlamesNero@reddit
Yeah, I can smell this photo!
Shelbernickel@reddit
Came here to say this!
suckacheetasdick@reddit
Same!
PickleFlavordPopcorn@reddit
My mother still talks about the smell of these shoes. I took them off in the car once after a full day at the state fair and caused a CRISIS on the ride home
redditshy@reddit
This makes me feel so much better! I thought I was the only one. hahaha
Affectionate_Ask_769@reddit
I’m cracking up
al_brownie@reddit
Same. They smelled so bad I had to keep them on the porch.
tellmywifiloveher1@reddit
I could smell my own feet in class. It was so nasty
blackcurrents78@reddit
😂 The pleather ones got funky so fast!
likesblackcoffeebest@reddit
I think i may have gotten a lucky batch. I don't remember those smelling, but maybe I just lived with it?? lol anything is possible
bendybiznatch@reddit
I wear socks with sandals then too, so I didn’t have that problem. Lol.
veggiebikebook@reddit
They gave me the worst blisters ever but I kept wearing them anyway. My sister was so jealous.
Unchained_Memory33@reddit
I had these too!! Why did these happen?
Rare-Boss2640@reddit
I got my knock offs at Kmart. Hell yeas
Alwayslearning258@reddit
LEI: unlocked memory!
Similar_Sale_5136@reddit
My last pair of Payless were 6th grade and then I got my first pair of Jordan’s. Best day ever. Still have the box.
angasaurus@reddit
Are you me?

I backpacked Europe for 3 weeks when I was 16 in the Payless versions and they still held up through the next school year.

Same here
Militia_Kitty13@reddit
Omg meeeeeeee tooo (on the shoes)!!!!! Knock offs was all my parents were willing to get, but man I loved those things!!!
skttrbrain1984@reddit
Yup I had those and the sole split down at the arch of the sole and would make a loud squeak with every step down the hallway between classes. Embarrassing! 😂
mlo9109@reddit
Me too. Loved them, but I'd have to wash my feet after taking them off. Probably why I don't wear sandals as an adult.
Vivid-Individual5968@reddit
They were the most comfortable shoes ever, but they made my feet smell si bad! 😂

Yes I loved my LEI flares lol. I remember I was very particular about the length and how it had to cover most of the sandal but not near the toes.
ilikemycoffeealatte@reddit
Yep, I had the knockoffs too!
Bad-Habit-2020@reddit
Me too!!!! I loved those sandals so much lol
Elegant-Inside5436@reddit
Yep. They stunk so bad after awhile.
And the only acceptable sock and sandal combo was those adidas sport flip flops that you’d wear after practice or a game, basketball or softball in my case. Otherwise, those freaking bumps killed the soles of your feet!
Roadrage000@reddit
My husband still has his pair in our closet.. OG’s from 1998! I just bought two pairs of Doc clogs.. they are so comfy.. I freaking love them. And you can buy these sandals again.. they’re online in a lot of places. The 90’s are coming back!
TooDamFast@reddit
I have since upgraded to these: https://www.amazon.com/Skechers-Tresmen-Garo-Sandal-Fisherman-Chocolate/dp/B07WG9XJ72/r
80% lighter, twice the cushioning and one third of the price. I had 4 pairs of Docs in high school including the sandals but I gave up on them in my 20's and won't go back.
Dimplefrom-YA@reddit
I love those.. i still have a pair.

We def all rocked these in elementary school (96?) and mine were def the Payless ones.
ohyeahthatsthestuff1@reddit
My baby sitter wore these!
thisbroadreadsbooks@reddit
I bought a pair my senior year. They finally wore out(the buckle area of the strap on one) when I was 26. They stank, but I loved them. Haha
tomqvaxy@reddit
I refuuuuuuuuused. Gods above them shits are an offense to the eye.

mia_sara@reddit
Those shoes were amazing. Sturdy, comfortable, lasted forever. I still don’t like regular sandals because they’re usually so flimsy and/or corny.
TheModernCurmudgeon@reddit
We called them Jerusalem Cruisers or JC’s
Tinyhulk27@reddit
Every time we were up to some mischief we'd have to slow down or stop wait for Mike because he lost one of his Jesus shoes on the getaway sprint to the car and had to go back for it.

zsmomma49@reddit
Ummm my 14 year old now rocks my pair of these :) they don’t fit me anymore post birthing children
Glum_Mud_4693@reddit
Loved these. Later all the catholic school girls wore them
moopmoopmeep@reddit
They were one of the few “all black or brown, all leather, but not a tennis shoe” shoes back then, at least one of the few that weren’t made for geriatric women. About 60% of my high school (me included) had this shoe because it was the only young person shoe that fit the dress code.
porcelinajune@reddit
I still have mine. I tried to wear them recently and forgot thatt they weigh a 100 lbs.
doktorhladnjak@reddit
> That’s impossible. Did you deduct sixteen pounds for your shoes?
nelmski@reddit
Right? No wonder my calves were amazing back then!
anneylani@reddit
I wished I had the burgundy pair so bad. I still wish I had a pair!
Roy_G_Biv_87@reddit
I had this pair! Loved them! Wore them with babydoll dresses.
mariposa314@reddit
I had these exact doc martens. Got them in 7th grade, 1997. One day when I was in college, 2004, the elastic just died as I was walking across campus. It was so sad. The buckles just flopped with every step. I remember going back to my dorm room and saying to my roommate, "I didn't expect to have to spend $100 on new shoes today so I'm a little bummed out." She thought that was such a funny thing for me to say. I replaced them with Caterpillar tractor brand brown leather boots. I still have them. Still miss those docs though. In hindsight, I probably could have had them repaired. Oh well, live and learn.

I kept those from 97 to about 2018. The foam under the footbed had deteriorated. Looked for them later only to find out my dear ole mom decided randomly one day nearly 25 years later that she had to empty out that closet. She gave my sandals, my glitter docs, and my letter jacket plus tons of other 90’s junk to good will. Who does that!?! lol
Peanut083@reddit
You were allowed to wear open toe shoes at school? Maybe it’s the whole being Australian thing, but they were pretty strict about us wearing closed leather shoes at my school. Largely because of WHS reasons.
It’s still a thing here, and as someone who trained and worked as a science teacher for a while, I got sick of having arguments with students over their shoes. I didn’t want to be the sucker filling in the paperwork and having the ‘please explain’ conversation with the Principal when some student managed to drop something on their foot that went straight through their non-leather shoes and caused an injury. Like, I don’t care how cool your Vans are, if they’re not leather, you can’t do prac work.
gottarespondtothis@reddit (OP)
largely because of the WHS reasons
Like……Wicked Huge Spiders?
Peanut083@reddit
Nah, it’s usually the small ones you’ve got to watch out for. Redbacks like hiding in small, dark spaces. You learn real quick to give your shoes a tap and shake to dislodge any hidey spideys if you have to leave your shoes outside or on an open veranda.
In saying that, the Newcastle Big Boy is sub variant of the Sydney Funnel Web, and is venomous. It can reach 9cm/ nearly 4” in diameter including the legs, and I happen to live within the area it can be found.
TBH, spiders don’t really bother me. It’s the nope ropes that I feel like you have to watch out for. And it’s better to be wearing enclosed leather shoes if you happen to come across one of those.
gottarespondtothis@reddit (OP)
There’s so much I don’t like about all of that lol
Peanut083@reddit
When you grow up with it, it’s normal. The idea of stuff like black bears is a lot scarier to me than an eastern brown snake, and they can be like an eshay on meth if they feel threatened.
I have to mention that I went to Sweden for several weeks when my kids were 2 and 4, and we spent some time staying at my friend’s in-law’s home. They lived in a rural area of northern Sweden, and I was starting to lose my shit over how often I’d ask someone to watch the kids while I went to the bathroom or something, only to come back and realise my kids were nowhere to be seen and no one else had any idea where they were.
It took about 3 days and me nearly reaching the point of yelling at someone to realise that the Swedes were all really chill about the kids free roaming because there was no wildlife around that would eat/poison/envenomate them. After that, I pointed out where the bilberry patch in the yard was to them and stopped stressing out. At least I knew if they were out of sight, they were probably stuffing their faces with berries. 🤣
Astrazigniferi@reddit
What does WHS stand for?
Except for gym class, where shoes had to be appropriate for the activity, our school didn’t have any footwear rules other than having some kind of shoe. They wouldn’t have allowed us anything dangerous enough in science class for footwear to matter.
Peanut083@reddit
Workplace health and safety.
Students have to wear appropriate shoes for PE practical classes here as well. Back when I was at school, they’d make us change into our sport uniform for PE, then back into our regular uniform at the end of the lesson.
Getting changed for PE doesn’t seem to be a thing in public schools here anymore, and a lot of kids will just wear their sport shoes on days they know they have PE prac lessons. When I was teaching full time with a set class load, depending on the school, I’d either work out the schedule for my classes and not schedule prac lessons on days where the students in that class also had PE prac lessons, or the kids would bring their sport shoes and only change into them for PE.

And no, I’m not a foot guy.
JustKeeping2Myself@reddit
Haha...the last sentence made me LOL
Captain_Desi_Pants@reddit
They were so FN heavy!!! I had these, wore them and my feet hated me for it.
Also had the wing tip Mary Jane type docs too. All those shoes were like strapping a brick to your foot
queenofcaffeine76@reddit
Lmao where I'm from, in 96-99 these were the comfortable shoes that all the older women were wearing
intensenerd@reddit
Well Darlene, do they serve an orthopedic function?
HayQueen@reddit
Thank jeebus I missed this trend
maringue@reddit
I can smell this picture and I don't like it.
loneMILF@reddit
We were too poor for my mother to justify buying Docs for my growing feet. Instead I wore the leather huaraches my friend would pick up for me on her family vacations to Mexico.
SplitEndsSuck@reddit
I had these and they lasted about 15 years. Definitely miss them

Got a platform pair during the pandemic. Cherry. I will be in the nursing home with those

loved the Jesus water walkers. lol. everyone's feet smelled like fritos corn chips when they took them off. 🤣

These things were so heavy, if you chucked them at somebody, it was like launching an Olympic discus.
TheDorkyDeric@reddit
I love these sooo much! The were so god damn heavy though. I can't tell you how many times I knocked my opposite ankle with the other one. But, fuck, these were awesome!
adamcmorrison@reddit
I went through two pairs
iolmao@reddit
Girls in Italy only wore Docs boots in winter and Chuck Taylor in summer back then.
I had no idea Docs came in different forms, like shoes for example. Let alone semi-sandals.
Willow1883@reddit
The sweat stains on those things made me hate sandals forever.
Travis123083@reddit
Rocked the shit outta this and the sketchers ones!
phoenix0r@reddit
These and white Jack Purcell’s for some reason
sed2017@reddit
I loved these but they cut into my ankles so I had to wear band aids when I wore these shoes
BoognishJones@reddit
Even the boys had something similar. I remember my mom buying me a pair and I HATED them, she made me wear them so much and I thought they were hideous
pennylayne12@reddit
Omg the blisters I got when I was wearing them in
critical_patch@reddit
I had those! They were so heavy but so comfy
juni4ling@reddit
I had them.
My wife still has her old pair. My (our) kid wore them a couple summers ago.
Available-Fig8741@reddit
And made your feet stink!
Lumpy-Detective-1978@reddit
I thought these were ugly, but then again I wore some ugly damn shoes in the 90s, so...

Ahh, the ole 4 wheel drive Jesus slippers. I’d love a pair of these again!!!
TraditionalMood277@reddit
Hideous then, atrocious now.
Desperate-Spring-189@reddit
Loved them
SchucksAndMucks@reddit
I SAVED all my $$ to get these bad boys in high school. I blame them for making me believe I could wear them all weather. Come college it was my hippie ass Chacos I wore all weather, all occasions. At da club with my Chacos 😆
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
My mom loved these, lol, she wore those when flip-flops weren't an option
Coomstress@reddit
I had knockoff Doc Martens that looked exactly like this!
PhoneJazz@reddit
It was Doc Marten Maryjanes for me. Just last month I saw Throwing Muses in concert and Kristin Hersh was wearing them, what a throwback 🥰
sorrymizzjackson@reddit
They just had them for sale again last year and there are versions out this year too. I had the earth shoe Walmart knockoff version back then.
t3hwookiee@reddit
They were so damned comfy!! My pair lasted I think nine years? Not as long as my blue Doc boots (going on 29 years, with one resole;.
adammerkley@reddit
Ugh I had a pair of Doc sandals that I absolutely adored and lost them. They were like the ones pictured but didn't have all the webbing, just 2 straps.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
I loved these. So comfy!
miss_murder0@reddit
I wore my out! 😄 lol
