What modern car feature do you absolutely can’t live without anymore?
Posted by spotforcars@reddit | Autos | View on Reddit | 239 comments
I’ll start — brake hold. Sat in traffic my whole life white knuckling the brake pedal. Now I tap a button and the car holds itself at a red light. Sounds like nothing until you’ve used it for a week. Then you get in a car without it and feel like something is genuinely broken.
What’s yours?
e36@reddit
Being able to charge my car in my garage is pretty amazing stuff.
PowerSlaveAlfons@reddit
I can charge my car while driving. It’s called an alternator.
e36@reddit
Hey, that's great and I am happy for you
bimm3r36@reddit
Damn dude your username and flair together is top tier
e36@reddit
It's funny because I remember being very surprised that this username was available when I was signing up.
GeneralCommand4459@reddit
Brake hold is particularly good on a manual car when there’s a hill involved. Saves the three pedal shuffle.
smashingcones@reddit
Handbrake?
MinniePearl@reddit
I'm going to sound stupid here.....is the hand brake the same thing as an emergency brake? Recently scrapped 2008 Elantra manual here. It has an emergency brake that I would use only when I park, never while I was driving. Was I doing something wrong for 18 years? (Won't be the first time.)
smashingcones@reddit
Yeah it's the same thing. You can use that brake to hold the car in place on a hill while your feet are on the clutch + accelerator!
Purple_Lurker-@reddit
Oh man, i find brake hold on a manual car infuriating. It makes me roast the clutch trying to overcome it on my partners Jetta.
Plz_DM_Me_Small_Tits@reddit
Cooled and heated seats. Bonus for heated steering wheel.
Syndrome@reddit
How nice are cooled seats? I'm always warm so I feel like that's a must in my next car
nonanonymo@reddit
They’re my favorite feature in my car. No more arriving to places with a sweaty butt and back. I run hot and sweat easily so I use the cooled seats almost year round.
WhipTheLlama@reddit
My Cayenne lets me turn on the heated seat and the seat ventilation fan at the same time. The warm airflow keeps the sweat away while still warming on a cold day. It's amazing.
Syndrome@reddit
Nice, that's exactly what I need. What car do you have?
nonanonymo@reddit
Polestar 4
Syndrome@reddit
Thanks!
BlackKnightC4@reddit
At first they're a bit weird since it feels like you're peeing yourself initially. But you get used to it quick.
Syndrome@reddit
That's good to know lol
BlackKnightC4@reddit
One more thing. They were definitely worth it if you live somewhere hot. I live in southeast texas and they're amazing.
Syndrome@reddit
Honestly, I'm from Toronto Canada so it's not that hot here. But I'm very heavy so I'm just generally warm. Either way it's just a pipedream for my next car which will be who knows how many years from now
Plz_DM_Me_Small_Tits@reddit
It hasn't even been hot enough out that I've needed them since getting the car but from just testing them out I can already say they're going to be a lifesaver once summer really sets in.
qu4de@reddit
My car has heated and massage seats. Those two together are insane.
skorps@reddit
I'd put heated steering over seats any day
_Molj@reddit
Do you really mean you want a heated steering wheel?
ThePandaKingdom@reddit
Id take ventilated seats over heated seats any day. Its literally the only feature id say my car is "lacking", granted, the previous owner of the car checked literally every box lol.
PurpEL@reddit
That's literally it. Everything else ITT I would either disable or delete
Simoxs7@reddit
Are heated seats a thing on „modern“ cars? My 20 year old Audi had them standard…
antaphar@reddit
Same. I was excited for the Ranger Raptor (F150 Raptor too big for my tastes) but then discovered the $60k truck doesn’t have cooled seats. Immediately lost interest.
I’d probably make an exception for something like a Miata, though.
Viperlite@reddit
My older Miata could really benefit from ventilated seats. The open top and leather can make for some sweaty situations, even if you run the A/C with the top down on a sunny day.
fangelo2@reddit
The heated steering wheel was something that I never really thought about until I got a car with it. I don’t think I could live without it now
imped4now@reddit
I despise brake hold features.
completely-random-na@reddit
After driving 3 brand new vehicles in the last few months, I just go back to my old stuff.
None of these features enhance my driving experience except for CarPlay. I’d say Bluetooth but it sounds horrible compared to a wired connection.
CPOx@reddit
Blind Spot Monitoring
Adaptive Cruise Control
doctorcapslock@reddit
i can't stand adaptive cruise control. if a slow car enters my lane, i don't want to slow down; i want to overtake. it just forces you to intervene more often
TheGroundBeef@reddit
Right? I never understood the appeal of adaptive cruise. I don’t want to slow down to the speed of the car in front of me
funnyfarm299@reddit
Ah yes I too prefer plowing into the car ahead of me.
SlomoLowLow@reddit
GM super cruise will overtake people when that happens. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Bentley, and rolls Royce also will.
doctorcapslock@reddit
that's level 2 self driving though isn't it
nuclearDEMIZE@reddit
Yeah this is my thought too. I actually hate how far away it starts activating even on the shallowest setting
doctorcapslock@reddit
same. honestly glad i am not the only one with this opinion, but we are in the minority lol
antaphar@reddit
You’d have to intervene anyways with standard cruise control, right?
doctorcapslock@reddit
yeah but i'm already holdin the steering wheel, when i'm using cruise control my foot is off the pedal
look i know it's a minor inconvenience but i don't like minor inconveniences that have been introduced by design
smashingcones@reddit
Not with the throttle.
shyrain67_@reddit
if a slow car enters your lane and you want to overtake press the accelerator and overtake
smashingcones@reddit
That's what he said at the end of his comment..
doctorcapslock@reddit
classic reading half of the comment amirite
_need_legal_advice@reddit
What the original comment is talking about is self drive, not adaptive cruise control. And accelerating to over take in cruise control is still better than no cruise control at all and still have to brake to avoid and accelerate to cruise control.
FeldMonster@reddit
Thank-You!
I feel like I am taking crazy pills when I read people here defending it.
smashingcones@reddit
Adaptive cruise in my Tiguan is dogshit and I think people using it are contributing to traffic coming to a standstill. So much unnecessary braking instead of coasting, leaves too much room (someone jumps in front, guess what? more braking) and it often pick up someone in the next lane over and match speed with them instead of overtaking.
45000kms with it so far and I've only ever used it for road trips when there's no other cars around.
Scuffedpixels@reddit
The ability to heat or cool the car via my phone and have it maintain the temp when I go into a store.
I love not getting into a hot or cold car anymore.
Motorcruft@reddit
CarPlay
ThePandaKingdom@reddit
My car has a prett nice infotainment system, but being a 2014, the (actually really solid) 8 inch touch screen doesnt support car play. For about 400 bucks though you can get one pre programmed with the newer hardware and software and slap the unit in and itl have car play among some other features. I want to do it eventually but have just ben too lazy.
Odd_Link7869@reddit
I have a ‘12 F150 with Sync1. It’s a good infotainment screen, but all of the AC is ran through the screen, so a simple display swap screws me. It’s so annoying
kilocharlie12@reddit
I just bought a dash cam/CarPlay combo for about $120 off Amazon.
My phone still connects to my truck for music and the CarPlay navigation and music controls work wonderfully.
ThePandaKingdom@reddit
I saw some of those and i actually got one, but it was too large. I found a real small one i have been contemplating but I have yet to pick it up. I am limited in options as to where i can avtually place it.
ctn91@reddit
Or bluetooth for me.
beejers30@reddit
Yep. Used to have to mapquest to a destination. Then get lost and pissed.
khanak@reddit
I mocked it before I had it but can't imagine driving a car without a reverse camera although I suspect it isn't considered a 'modern' feature anymore.
spacefret@reddit
It feels necessary these days because visibility in a lot of cars takes a backseat (figuratively) to design
FishFingerAnCustard@reddit
That’s actually a really good point.
I’ve never felt a need for one, but I primarily drive older cars with much better design/visibility.
Maybe my attitude to cameras would change if I drove more cars with badly designed body’s.
Bonafideago@reddit
It's a mandated feature in the US since 2018.
spacefret@reddit
I'm aware, my point still applies
the_s0ldier_of_frost@reddit
Literally installed a backup cam in my Mustang when I upgraded the stereo system. I missed it.
GGAllinPartridge@reddit
I recently got a car with all electric windows in working order. The days of telling my passengers "Don't wind the window down, it doesn't go back up" are finally over.
FishFingerAnCustard@reddit
Don’t worry, they will break soon.
They always do.
Every. Single. Time.
Just give us winders ffs.
HLef@reddit
They said modern. Feel like that’s been standard for a long time.

I've been in cars less than 10 years old where the power windows have to be guided back up by hand otherwise they get stuck.
Power windows aren't perfect either lol
Only_One_Kenobi@reddit
Switched from and early 2000ths Citroen to something less French?
Cranks_No_Start@reddit
I just replace both window regulators and all the runs and seals on my wife’s old 91 Jeep.
Sooooooo much better.
MattTheMechan1c@reddit
Push button start. Thought it would be just a gimmick at first but when carrying something it’s super convenient to just grab the handle to unlock the car and just pressing the button without fumbling around with keys. All my cars since 2010 has it and never had an issue.
spotforcars@reddit (OP)
Same here and also the walk away feature with that when the cat locks itself when you start walking away from it
HexHyperion@reddit
What benefits does locking your cat give? I guess it doesn't scratch your furniture, but what if the mice come?
^(Sorry, couldn't resist lmao)
Trillination@reddit
Car theft would go down significantly if we stuck with keyed cars 🤷♂️
thequickbrownbear@reddit
My EV takes it a step further. Enter the car and change the gear to drive :)
boomheadshot7@reddit
I do not understand reddits obsession with CarPlay.
I drove 5 hours to a buddies house a couple weeks ago. I my phone/gps in the cup holder, changed the radio station when it got too fuzzy, and just drove. The constant connection between phone and vehicle is really odd to me. People would not buy a certain vehicle because their phone can’t connect to it? It’s literally, in the literal sense, mind boggling to me.
ZANIESXD@reddit
A clutch.
thinkdifferentpad@reddit
Heated seats, cooled seats, heated steering wheel.
Heated windshield wipers would be nice for Canadian winters, cause wiping with frozen chunks on the wipers is a real safety hazard.
Blindspot monitoring is a nice addition, but should not take away from actual shoulder checking. Same when reversing, rear cam should not replace looking over your shoulder. Don’t let technology become a crutch when it comes to safety.
FlipMyWigBaby@reddit
Auto stop-start. …nah, just kidding, I fucking hate that forced tech on cars, and the disable (hold down emergency blinker button) which only lasts till you park car
spotforcars@reddit (OP)
This damn auto start stop nobody ever anywhere said anything good about it 😂
TheGT1030MasterRace@reddit
My 2001 Prius has it as part of the hybrid system and I love it. There's no starter, the electric motor has 258 lb-ft at zero (it can chirp tires from a stop before the engine is even able to provide torque) and the climate control stays the same when you're at a light (unless you're sitting for more than 30-45 seconds in the summer, then the special evaporator core can't keep up and the AC starts getting warm.)
put_tape_on_it@reddit
I thought they had electric AC compressors? Or was that in later cars?
TheGT1030MasterRace@reddit
That was 2004 and later. My 2001 has a belt driven compressor with a special "stay-cold" evaporator core.
funnyfarm299@reddit
I like auto start stop. There I said it.
King_Forrest@reddit
CD Player. More reliable and better sounding than tape.
And for an automatic: paddle shift, or some kind or manual override. Low gear is the next best thing to 'one pedal' driving in stop and go cities.
Dvdmndy@reddit
One pedal driving. It is a complete game changer in stop and go traffic.
King_Forrest@reddit
Okay I can actually agree with this one.
spotforcars@reddit (OP)
You right about that !!👍
Real-Edge-9288@reddit
another quedtion would be what new features you hate?
I prefer turnable knobs and tactile buttons over touchscreen... you dont need to look and you can adjust. With touchscreen you need to see if you are pressing the right area.
misterpickles69@reddit
A transmission that doesn’t eat itself before 50k miles and an engine that can make it past 5k without needing a serious recall.
voiceOfHoomanity@reddit
White knuckling the brake pedal sounds like some hallucinatory ai bs
If the car actually works, almost no pressure is required to keep it stationary..
Zeisen@reddit

tedlyb@reddit
None of them. It’s all just electronic crap that’s going to break and cost money to fix. I’ll do without.
BrunesOvrBrauns@reddit
Then I better not see you even glance at the Bluetooth bitch
tedlyb@reddit
Bluetooth has been around for 27 years, that’s not really a modern car thing.

e36@reddit
So you've got a hand crank or where do you draw the line
tedlyb@reddit
Starters have been around for way over 70 years at this point, they are nowhere near a modern car feature.
I’m fine with carburetors, hand crank windows, manual door locks, and a stick shift with overdrive. A good radio is almost indispensable though, but radio has gone to hell so I guess a CD player or Bluetooth setup.
AC, power locks and window, cruise control, they’re nice to have but nowhere near indispensable.
FlourCity@reddit
Fuel injection came out in the 1930s...
tedlyb@reddit
Which is why I didn’t include them as modern.
Comfortable-Shoe9543@reddit
With the cost of batteries I'd love a hand crank. I'm sure if they worked on more manual style tech itd be awesome. I imagine gears like a bicycle, a tiny crank = big output. Who knows what could have been.
Cranks_No_Start@reddit
For me. Electric windows, locks and mirrors. Everything else is fine being manual.
HEBushido@reddit

".... white knuckling the brake pedal. Now I tap a button and the car holds itself..."
I have this feature and find it silly. It's easier to just leave my foot on the brake. Literally the weight of my size ten right foot is enough to keep the car from moving without any added pressure. Zero effort required.
vediogamer101@reddit
Wait until you drive a manual- takes even less pressure when in neutral
kobevercetti@reddit
It’s the best
Competitive-Reach287@reddit
I've owned mostly manuals since 1980.
TheMightyKumquat@reddit
I have an old school manual car. I just pull the handbrake and put it in neutral.
dogturd21@reddit
u/Competitive-Reach287 you must live in a really flat area and drive an automatic. If you regularly drive in stop and go in a hilly area, or a manual trans, its a very nice feature. That said I learned on a manual with a hand brake - 1963 MGB, so its 2nd nature to me in juggling the various controls on a hill.
Only_Information7895@reddit
Brake hold is useful, but even on hills I don't need to press the brakes that hard to stand still, which was the main issue.
Competitive-Reach287@reddit
Learned to drive on a manual 47 years ago. Currently live in the Rockies. Currently own a manual (as well as an auto). Rarely, if ever, need to use a handbrake when starting off, even on a hill or off-road. Had a manual Mazda with HSA-(not the same as the "hold" on an auto). Hated it, but couldn't turn it off. Fortunately, was able to turn it off on my manual Wrangler. Urban stop and go traffic was never an issue.
cshookIII@reddit
I have a manual 09 mini, it has hill hold for about 2 seconds or until you touch the gas. It’s weird, I don’t like it. I’ve always had at least 1 manual car since I got my license 22 years ago - starting on a hill is just a normal part of life, you get used to letting the clutch out and getting on the gas quickly. The hill hold has me over revving a bunch when I’m going from a light or wherever.
Dedward5@reddit
Why don’t Americans just use the handbrake, it why it’s a handbrake not a foot pedal.
FindingUsernamesSuck@reddit
My anecdotal opinion - I prefer driving manual in traffic largely because I don't have to hold the car back by being constantly on the brake.
Never driven a car with the "brake hold" that OP describes but it does sound like at least some people find it more convenient.
I'm sure it depends on the car too.
TurkishSwag@reddit
Idk about white knuckling but some higher hp/ tq cars definitely require more than a light press to stay stopped in traffic. It’s nice to have a brake hold option sometimes but most cars can be stopped with barely any effort.
Simoxs7@reddit
But at that point shouldn’t you just put it in neutral? Like I‘ve only owned manual but if its really that much effort for the brakes to keep the car from going then all that energy gets dumped in the torque converter which could start to overheat then, right?
TheGroundBeef@reddit
Agree. My last car had it and i never used it. It wouldn’t even stay on, you had to press the button every time you got in the car (2020 accord). The weight of my foot with almost zero extra effort on the brake pedal never bothers me
Only_One_Kenobi@reddit
Subtle mention of your shoe size.
Montserratian@reddit
Yeah I've never heard of what OP is describing. Perhaps there is something wrong with their brakes. I'm the same as you the weight of my foot is almost enough on its own, it takes no exertion whatsoever.
chungusamongusss@reddit
White knuckling

Purple_Lurker-@reddit
A nice driving feel. So many vehicles these days focus on electronics and not drive feel. Electronic steering, poorly tuned fly-by-wire throttle, and giant screens take away from driving experience.
skorch@reddit
Backup cameras
Purple_Lurker-@reddit
Not a fan of backup cameras here... Mostly because they mandate a screen being in the center of the vehicle and I hate screens in the vehicle.
Wolfey1618@reddit
Dunno why this isn't at the top, makes parallel parking easier, I can back into any parking spot just as fast as pulling into one without worrying about hitting anything, it was a massive upgrade.

infinitiguy37@reddit
heads up display. It’s become my favorite feature in my BMW. Love that the speed number turns red when I’m going over the posted speed limit lol
thetrivialstuff@reddit
This isn't a modern feature, but I consider the highbeam control being like this to be a must-have:
To turn on highbeam: push stalk forwards, and it stays there
To turn off highbeam: pull stalk back its normal position, and it stays there
To flash highbeams: pull stalk toward you; if you let go, it rebounds back to default (highbeam off) position
Far too many cars have no way to immediately flash the highbeams quickly if they're on, or don't even have a way to flash them at all except turning them on and off with separate motions.
Some recent cars I've driven are even worse in that the highbeam stalk doesn't stay where you put it. To turn them off or on is the same motion, so there is no way to immediately force highbeams off if the auto-highbeam feature malfunctions.
Ok, a real modern car feature - a decade or so ago we started seeing the stupid "bump the turn signal stalk halfway to make 3 blinks happen" feature. Then some car manufacturers realised that this was a bad idea and instead of removing the feature, provided a setting to disable it. That's the feature I can't live without - a way to have the turn signals completely under my control.
Gavram@reddit
My car (Lucid) shows the right and left side view mirror cameras in the drivers gauge cluster preventing having to take your eyes off the road to look at the mirrors when changing lanes…it sounds minor but once you have it you can’t go back. The camera is also a bigger field of view than what the mirrors provide so safer than physically looking. It can do auto lane changes for you as well but having these cameras keeps me from using it much.

thetrivialstuff@reddit
That's just having a working handbrake. They took those away, so they had to invent a whole new feature for people who couldn't figure out that in an automatic you can prevent rollback by holding the brake with your left foot with a gradual release as you increase power with your right.
Just like making sightlines so terrible that they had no choice but to mandate reversing cameras.

I'm with you. A/C and Bluetooth are all I really want.

Power steering
Chicken_Zest@reddit
Modern high output headlights. Heated steering wheel.
Cranks_No_Start@reddit
This is pita for other drivers.
Chicken_Zest@reddit
Not necessarily, if they're aimed properly and mounted low on the car they don't blind as much. It's cars with headlights mounted higher up that have weight in the back causing them to rake 'up' that cause the most blindness.
Cranks_No_Start@reddit
That’s not been my experience. Just regular cars with leds that are super bright.
ClaudeVS@reddit
I put a Bluetooth compatible head unit in my car because I didn't have any cassettes, so I'd say Bluetooth.
Prosthetic_Head@reddit
Ac, remote start and heated seats. All I need
Lawineer@reddit
In my truck (24 gmc 2500) - all the extra cameras. Holy how do they make life easier.
In my daily- CarPlay.
I will say navigation in my heads up display is a close second.
shyrain67_@reddit
adaptive cruise control
apaulogy@reddit
Limp Mode. Seriously it can be annoying but the car is protecting itself from catastrophic failure.
CrypticQuery@reddit
I can't stand most modern car features and feel as if they add unnecessary cost and complexity.
Backup cameras are alright though. Especially with newer cars that have high trunks or otherwise poor visibility/large blind spots.
BornVillain04@reddit
I agree but according to current industry data everyone wants their car to be loaded with tech, so we are a dying breed. I dread the day I can't find a Toyota Matrix anymore
762_54r@reddit
Bluetooth. power windows
redbiteX1@reddit
Auto parking break, hill hold, wireless CarPlay
Robots_Never_Die@reddit
Keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, cooled seats.

Adaptive cruise and carplay
hunterd412@reddit
Back up camera, didn’t have it in my first car but I’ve had it ever since.
elementfx2000@reddit
Scheduled preconditioning, phone key, and dog mode. The conveniences are just too good.
The one creature comfort I wish my car had is ventilated seats.
rewardingsnark@reddit
At least basic safety suite (blind spot, cross traffic, lane etc) they really do enhance safety which is worth it.
CrypticQuery@reddit
A good chunk of that is due to the poor visibility and high beltlines that newer cars are notorious for IMO.
rewardingsnark@reddit
Sure but they are also just a good improvement for general safety. I would rather have them and not need them then not have and need.
Only_One_Kenobi@reddit
Android Auto.
Heated steering wheel maybe.
ESC
Seat belts
Disfunctional-U@reddit
Sometimes "no features" is the best feature. Of course I'm poor, so by the time the car gets to me most of the features are broken anyway.
mini4x@reddit
Manual Subarus had hill hold probably 30+ years ago. I never owned one, but it was awesome.
avoidhugeships@reddit
Android Auto is the only one I actually like. The rest I would prefer not to have.
edsavage404@reddit
Backup camera
SparrowBirch@reddit
Surround view camera. It’s an absolute cheat code. I am perfectly placed in my parking spot every time.

Heating/AC is awful on older cars. Other than that I can't think of any.
Cranks_No_Start@reddit
Define older.
My 3 90s vehicle all have really good ac with vent temps IN the high 30s (3-5C)
My mid 80s Volvo that o changed to R134a would blow low 30s ( right on 0C) from the vents.
My even older 75 IH Scout 2 (R12) would blow sub freezing temps at the vents. (27f. -3C)
HuskyPurpleDinosaur@reddit
For two years we drove a 2018 GLA 250 and didn't realize it had brake hold. There's no button for it, you just come to a stop, then press the brake pedal hard, and it holds.
spotforcars@reddit (OP)
But now you can’t live without like me 😂
Street-Feed-1607@reddit
Now THIS is an amazing feature! 😮
