"A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one." - Jack

Honestly all the recalls that Ford does makes me more curious about how many more recalls that other manufacturers should be doing but don’t

I work at a tier 1 supplier who makes parts for a lot of OEMs. They are made with similar processes and x company’s version of the Toyota Production System.
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
Yep. The regulators are up fords ass, so they’re being overcautious. Pretending like ford is uniquely bad a QC is naive.
ZeroChad@reddit
Nah you need to realize more of these recalls are self reported. Stop making excuses for sloppy engineering.
Guac_in_my_rarri@reddit
It the recall is not self reported it's a fat law suit and even fatter fine from that government.
ZeroChad@reddit
So why do you assume the regulators are up Fords ass different than any other OEM?
Guac_in_my_rarri@reddit
I was acting more info to your comment.
I think you're responding to the wrong comment???

Well better go for a recall than pull a Hyundai. Also how many of the recalled vehicles are actually sent back? Would it be cheaper for them to game the system by leaving defects on the vehicles knowing that only a few people actually pay attention and bring their vehicles in.
Expensive-Notice-509@reddit
The Fight Club recall formula, used by the Narrator to determine if a car company should initiate a recall, is: \(A \times B \times C = X\). [1, 2]

95% of their recalls seem to be pretty tiny issues.
With the exception of the Max-Tow-rear-axle issue, everyone one of my 2021 F-150s recalls were fixed during an oil change before I even knew about them (and added nominal time to the service visit).
I sometimes wonder if Ford is just overly cautious and most of these could have just been service bulletins. I wish they didn’t happen as much, but at least Ford takes care of the problem I guess.
falcon0159@reddit
Most of them could have absolutely been service bulletins and other manufacturers will not issue recalls for the minor issues Ford does. My 2025 F150 was recalled for the trailer light control software. The fix was an over the air update that the car did overnight while I slept…
Substantial_Heat_550@reddit
That’s been my assumption with seeing what they put out. But I am not well-versed in the regulations that govern this stuff.
But if you look at the full 153 recall list from last year most of them are stupid.
As a lawyer, it almost feels like their in-house counsel has decided this is the safest way to deal with issues that they discover.
in the end, I’d prefer a recall over a company doing a “human-cost” analysis and ignoring the issue (cough cough GM).

Ford got slapped with an independent review board by the NHTSA a couple years ago and I think they may still be under increased oversight? This article has a link to the consent order if you are curious:

My favorite ford recall was the one where the rear the door latch on our 2012 Fiesta decided to randomly fail and open at 50mph.

I feel like everyday there is a new recall for Ford.
Like it isn't any one issue, but constantly having recall after recall is wild.
