That person who constantly has their glasses on and off is now me

Finally happened. I turned into that person who can't see with my glasses on or off. I've got progressive lenses, and I guess it's time for a recheck. Reading or holding my phone, more comfortable with glasses off. Computer work, can't see the screen without my glasses. TV is okay without glasses, but I can't read any captions or text.
Everything was a whole lot easier when I was just nearsighted and needed my glasses for everything.
Surgery not an option.
zombie263739@reddit
I have two sets. Progressives for "normal" wear, and a "computer" pair. Sometimes I'll be working, wearing pair 2, I'll get up, go to the kitchen, and because my computer pair don't account for my farsightedness, everything gets fuzzy. Or I have to go somewhere during my lunch, and I have to run back on to get pair 1, because driving sucks when you can't see.
Expensive-Vanilla-16@reddit
I hate my progressive lenses. I'd rather use bifocals.
cl0ckw0rkman@reddit
Anything within six feet, no glasses needed. Walking/scootering around the house, no glasses. Reading, phone, card games or board games, no glasses.
Driving and watching TV are the only things I really need em for. Most the YT videos I watch don't really need em for that. Just movies or TV shows really.
ImaSource@reddit
Reading and phone - no glasses. Computer - special computer glasses. Everything else -regular glasses.
I've been wearing glasses since middle school for distance.
EnjoyingTheRide-0606@reddit
Progressive trifocals for going on 10 years. Screens are destroying our sight.
CypressRootsMe@reddit
I got new glasses and still can’t see most of the time. I thought it was just me! It’s so frustrating!
GaryNOVA@reddit
Ok-Offer-541@reddit
Me too. 😔
_ism_@reddit
same. and i can't get new ones until every 2 years on medicaid (disabled under 65) so i guess i just suffer
Mindless-Baker-7757@reddit
They make mid range and full range progressives.
EverythingScrolling@reddit (OP)
I'm due for an exam and will ask about alternatives. Because I have never gotten used to these glasses. It's just more recently I've been taking them off for certain things.
JustSomeGuy422@reddit
I tried progressives and hated them, completely hated them.
I need glasses to see well more than 2ft away. So I'm frequently taking them off to do things up close.
I used to be fine with my glasses for up close, I think between my prescription getting stronger and aging I just can't focus up close with the glasses on anymore.
EverythingScrolling@reddit (OP)
I was just fine being nearsighted, but everything went all to hell when I developed astigmatism a couple years ago. I hate these progressives.
Self-Comprehensive@reddit
I'm nearsighted and that's been my life since I was 10. At home I set my glasses down to read and since I have my house memorized I don't think about putting them back on till I want to watch TV and then I can't see to find my glasses. I have to go get my driving glasses out of the truck to find my regular glasses.
EverythingScrolling@reddit (OP)
I've been nearsighted and wearing glasses since 5th grade, but when astigmatism joined in a couple years ago, that messed with everything. I despise my progressive lenses. I never thought they helped.
It's been over a year since I got this pair, so I need to get an exam.
Roseliberry@reddit
This. My frames are silver which is the exact color of blurry.
Just_a_Kandi-Girl@reddit
I feel so seen. I hate this. Yes, I'm going to the eye doctor in June.
TheKaptinKirk@reddit
Y’all are the most negative people. All of the post seem to be like this. Now I need reading glasses. Now I need hearing aids. Now I need a knee replaced. Waaa, waaa, waaa. All of this negativity is bumming me out, man.
Where’s the positive posts? Who has grandkids they adore? Who started a new hobby?
Go ahead and downvote me to oblivion.
IranticBehaviour@reddit
D'ya see the irony in making a negative comment to complain about negative posts, lol? Yeah, the yelling at clouds and bitching about sciatica and bunions can get old (intended, haha), but there's something to be said for commiserating with other folks facing the same challenges. Misery loves company.
I only have a step-grandkid that lives 4000km away, so I'm low on those stories, but my daughter has three cats. They annoy the crap out of me, but they are occasionally cute and affectionate. Here's one of them using a bowl cozy inappropriately.
TheKaptinKirk@reddit
See?! We need more posts like these. I need to something look forward to logging into Reddit.
TracyVegas@reddit
Well, I’m Gen X and got married when I was 44 so I certainly don’t have children nor do I have grandchildren. I’m still working so I haven’t retired.
I do have a new 20,000 gallon pool that was just started this February and I’m currently laying in it now. I don’t know if that counts as a hobby or not.
TheKaptinKirk@reddit
And since you didn’t have kids, you can afford that pool. lol
pale13@reddit
Go make some positive posts then, or don’t, whatever man!
ofthrees@reddit
thanks for triggering me.
far sight, still okay, but do NOT hand me anything to read. glasses on, glasses off, glasses on, glasses off.
it's crazy to me that i used to be able to read books, menus, my phone, anything - low light, no problem.
ExaminationFancy@reddit
When was the last time you had your eyes checked?
The power of your progressives may need to be adjusted.
LazyOldCat@reddit
Progressives are good for seeing the dashboard, but completely useless for reading.
I’m now a pull glasses down and read over the top of them with the object 8” from my face guy.
IranticBehaviour@reddit
I got progressives almost entirely because of the dash and touchscreen in the car. My distance vision is still fine, and I only started needing readers in my mid-40s (and computer glasses a few years after that). But eventually the touchscreen in the car got just fuzzy enough to be annoying. I used to have both 'office' glasses (no correction up top, but computer distance in the middle and reading at the bottom) and readers just for reading or close-up work, but my optometrist moved me to true progressives because of the car. I don't need them to drive, but it's more comfortable. I do like not having to switch glasses and carry two pairs, but it's also annoying to basically wear glasses all the time.
I've got hopes for those eye drops that can 'fix' presbyopia for 6-10 hours at a time.
hells_cowbells@reddit
I have some computer glasses and they are good until I forget about the no distance part and try to walk around the office. When I got some prescription sunglasses, they asked if I just wanted the distance part of my prescription. I sadly had to get the full progressive lenses because I couldn't read the dashboard without them.
Detroitdays@reddit
OP! Me too!! I wear contacts and I still can’t read without readers!
mjh8212@reddit
I ended up with BVD now I have prisms and bifocals can’t see anything without my glasses.
jaxbravesfan@reddit
I have progressives, and I only use them for driving and watching TV these days. Reading or using a computer, I take them off. I set them on my desk as soon as I get to work and don’t put them on again until I leave for the day. Funny thing is, at my last eye exam, the doctor said my distance vision was much better without my glasses and that my prescription is way off. But it doesn’t feel that way when driving or watching TV. I have to see a retina specialist next month because he found some retinal microaneurysms in my right eye, and he doesn’t want to mess with changing my prescription to something more suitable until we see what’s going on with that.
LASER_Dude_PEW@reddit
Progressive lenses are ass. -Gen C peeps everywhere
blueblocker2000@reddit
How bout just taking them off/on, cleaning as an involuntary function during a conversation?
kytulu@reddit
I had ICL surgery for vision correction in 2010. The Doc said that it had a 40% chance to cause cataracts. I said, "sounds like a 60% chance that it won't!" 🎲🎲
I had cataract surgery in 2019. 😟
The (different) Doc said that there were three options:
1) Multifocal lenses that your brain learns to focus through different "rings" for a close approximation of natural vision, but the overall visual field is not as sharp. I already have some astigmatism, so no.
2) Have one eye with a fixed lens for close vision, and one eye with a fixed lens for distance. Your brain learns to compensate depending on what you are focusing on. That makes my head hurt just thinking about it, so no.
3) Have both eyes fixed for 20/20 distance, and use readers for close work, or 20/20 close, and use glasses for distance.
I opted for 20/20 distance, as I felt that it was more practical. So, I have a couple pairs of half-moon readers around the house for home use, and a few pairs of folding readers that the case fits nicely in my pocket for outside the house. I leave a pair at work, one in the car, one in the bike, and carry one when I go out on the weekends.
Hefty_Debt_638@reddit
Yup. I even got one of those granny things that attach to my glasses so I can wear them around my neck when I don’t need to see🤣
SoylentGreenIsCreepl@reddit
OMG thank you for reminding me that I need to buy one of these!! 😁
SoylentGreenIsCreepl@reddit
I used to be able to read just fine with my glasses on (and also in terrible lighting), but I've found myself within the last year having to take my glasses off to read. I also have to do that thing where you move what you're reading back and forth to focus. Also, gone are the days of reading in the dark, I guess. 😕
whippy_grep@reddit
I have progressives as well. Great for first thing in the morning, but, as the day goes by and I have to read things and/or be in a computer, I just put them down and go a capella.
ronejr71@reddit
Just wear the damn things. That act of taking glasses on and off is comical. Get a vision test which will say you need bifocals so get them and wear them. I don't understand the vanity it takes to deny what your eyes are telling you.
EverythingScrolling@reddit (OP)
I have progressive lenses, which are supposed to be easier than bifocals. My point is that I obviously need my eyes rechecked. I've worn glasses since 5th grade; it has nothing to do with vanity.
ronejr71@reddit
I would agree. Sorry about the vanity point. I have a coworker that needed to have his progressive lenses shift up a bit for more reading. I hope they can adjust how you actually use your glasses over this is your prescription. Your prescription could be fine but how the place the optics in the lenses may not. I hope you get it figured out.
PsychologicalLab6637@reddit
I'm the same. Can't see my phone with them on can't see the tv with them off. Absolutely cannot drive a car with them on but when I ride my bike I have to have them off. I haven't committed to bifocals or progressives yet.
Scrotchety@reddit
Shit, I've got two small vertical dents in my flesh at my hairline where the nosepiece digs in
MuddyPig168@reddit
Last month i went to a new eye doctor. Told I'm beginning to develop cataracts. I'm only 54. I feel a little fucked
goombatch@reddit
I am 57, had cataract surgery last week. frickin game changer - everything looks awesome now. i was really struggling because the cataracts got worse really quickly and I was seeing blurry, sometimes double vision as one eye was way worse than other. had both eyes done at once with EDOF lenses. amazing results
MuddyPig168@reddit
I'm glad to hear your case.
I was told in my situation is still too early to get surgery -- insurance company balking, yada yada.
Sad-Corner-9972@reddit
I’ve tried bifocals and just can’t. So, distance Rx RayBans for driving. Readers scattered around for close.
Physical_Ad5135@reddit
I have progressive contacts and I don’t have any issues at all. You should consider looking into them.
fredallenburge1@reddit
Were they expensive?
fuzzybunnyslippers08@reddit
I just got some and they make a HUGE difference.
thats-my-plan@reddit
Would probably just look around them
Jmckeown2@reddit
I have progressives that are great EXCEPT for using the computer. I actually have a different pair with a computer-specific prescription, that is NOT ok for anything but the computer.
I have a computer-intensive job, so every time someone walks up to me, or I need to walk or visit the facilities I’m having to swap.
wildcat_crazy_zebra@reddit
I'm there too.. including no option for surgery. Only the definitions of near and far have inexplicably changed for some reason. What I mean by that is 'far' has become quite near and that range where nothing helps it sharpen has grown.
Ambitious-Lie-27@reddit
lol 😜 Omg that just resonated with me - also when your talking to someone do you put your glasses on your head to ‘hear them better’? 😆😆
EverythingScrolling@reddit (OP)
No, but I turn down the radio during rain so I can focus better to drive.
Ambitious-Lie-27@reddit
Think that’s fair enough tbh
TracyVegas@reddit
Yeah, it’s time to get all the glasses upgraded. I only got glasses when I was 40 and I think I’ve been through six or seven upgrades now. The progressives make it so much easier but still. Ugh.
mtinmd@reddit
I can't see with my glasses on or off also.
Need to have eye surgery again. Had cataract surgery a years ago. Within weeks the replacement lens came loose. Had to have surgery again to secure it. About 2 years ago the lens came loose again.
I am missing 2/3 of the filament structures which hold the lens in place. Need to get surgery again...
Embarrassed-Map2148@reddit
I'd say I feel so seen. But, that would be cruel to say. So, brother I do relate.
MaximumJones@reddit
I wear two pair of readers to read fine print now. 🥺
Optimal-Ad-7074@reddit
I'm in that boat, with weirdness.
cataract surgery a few years ago on one eye. that one is better than it used to be for distance, but yeah. its still astigmatic as hell and its up-close game is ... strange.
the og one is myopic af and still has its cataracts, but it reads nicely up close and I'm clinging to it for as long as I can.
both of them suck at the progressive thing. in summer that section of my glasses is always smeared with that >!FUCKING!< sticky mineral sunblock that's all you can get these days anyway, so ...
Jynxsee@reddit
I have progressives and only take them off when I'm in front of computers for hours on end, because thats the range my vision is still good.
Repulsive_Dig_133@reddit
:) I have reading and seeing glasses now. Used to work with an old boy in the 80s and whenever he couldn't find his specs it was "where are my f*cking Gregorys!" ( Gregory Pecks - Specs :) )
It stuck with me , and when I cant find my glasses now Its "where are my f*cking Gregorys!"
Skatchbro@reddit
My old boss hated when people looked over their reading glasses at him. You can be sure I did it a bunch.
whatwouldclairedo@reddit
My old boss called that my "power move." It gives some men that "mommy isn't mad, but she is disappointed in me" feeling. Sadly, was necessary.
Pattycakes1966@reddit
I have progressives but take them off to read
StellaEtoile1@reddit
I got tired of flipping my reading glasses up and down on top of my head. My eye doctor got me progressive that are trifocals The lowest level was reading glasses the middle had no prescription and the Top he said he could improve my 2020 distance vision by a bit so we did that. Been wearing them for about 10 years or so, works like a charm!
geekspice@reddit
Been doing this for years, highly recommend https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/monovision
zhitman47@reddit
Same here. Tried to delay getting the progressives last year and was always taking off and putting back on. Went with the progressives this year and although it is helping and I find I'm doing that less now it's still happening more than I'd like. Oh well at least I can still see period lol
Read_The_Fing_Manual@reddit
I need mine to drive, see well across a room, etc - off for all close work (phone, screens, reading, etc) they are constantly on and off as I refuse to buy bifocals, yet, as jointing AARP was enough emotional trauma for a while 🤪
shawnna48@reddit
Same. I used to read with my glasses on. Resisted progressive for a long time but couldn't see the screen in my car with glasses on but couldn't drive with them off.
Swmboa@reddit
Same. And it’s just been the past 4 weeks. And I freaking hate it so very much!!!!!!!
Ok_Schedule5017@reddit
That was me. I did a recheck. I now have progressives that work for me. And apparently I have an astigmatism in both eyes. I have had one in the left for decades.
PuzzleheadedCat9986@reddit
I used to have perfect vision. Now I have 3 different pairs of glasses -multifocals for work, reading glasses, and computer glasses. My life revolves around where my glasses are at any particular time
LongYTOfficial@reddit
I can relate. Just bought my first lanyard for my readers because they’re constantly on and off all day.
