A pilot who spent 14 years with Spirit Airlines breaks down in tears while making a passenger announcement on the second-to-last Spirit flight to land at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport

I just hope all the employees receive all the Benefits they are entitled to. Especially the 401's or what ever retirement benefits they are entitled to. With Spirit filing Bankruptcy I don't know how that will affect the former employees
Seaguard5@reddit
The airline industry is nuts.
My dad was a pilot and got shafted with all the mergers and acquisitions of the first major consolidation. USAir stole his retirement pension and free flights for life by firing him a year before he could collect. That was criminal.
This is just sad. Flying is so unaffordable now too. And way less comfortable than back in the day.
Enshittification has hit the airlines disproportionately hard and with this new bankruptcy of one of the most affordable I don’t like the direction I see this industry going…
Teampatta@reddit
Boo hoo, fuck you spirit good riddance!
CT-1065@reddit
no fanfare, no commemorations, no media, no water cannon salutes... just a realization of "that's it" before being jettisoned into the night
FiberApproach2783@reddit
What is with these bot comments? They're all over every post about spirit.
CT-1065@reddit
you think i'm a bot?
FiberApproach2783@reddit
Maybe you're not a bot, but look at the other posts about spirit + on this one. There's a bunch of comments saying the exact same thing just slightly reworded. Although it appears quite a few got removed
doom_pizza@reddit
United, Delta, AA, and others have hired hundred of Spirit pilots over the last year or so. Those that stayed will likely find jobs eventually.
gussyhomedog@reddit
Yeah if they're already type-rated thats an easy pick up for other airlines
CT-1065@reddit
i've seen stuff about pilot shortages in the past... idk how true that is nowadays... but I feel like there's demand for pilots/cabin crews
clintkev251@reddit
It's always seemed that Spirit's pilots have had a really good reputation in the industry. Hopefully that helps them move on
railker@reddit
How does crewing look like these days, though, with airlines cutting more and more flights as each month of this fuel crisis goes on? Sounds up the thread like the majors aren't really taking on pilots at this time, wonder if that's coincidence or 'we already have more pilots than routes to fly'.
KJ3040@reddit
The majors are still hiring like crazy.
railker@reddit
I hope so, and hopefully at least some trickles down to the other roles. I know AMFA has been working for years with their mechanics for an agreement.
cohrt@reddit
So how everyone else leaves a job?
CT-1065@reddit
somewhat but this wasnt quite their choice
fahque650@reddit
Most people don't leave jobs by their choice.
fahque650@reddit
You mean how 99.99% of people end their time at a job?
ALVEENUS@reddit
It’s Spirit Airlines. You gotta pay extra for that.
otherwisepandemonium@reddit
What saddens me most is that there was no fanfare. There were no water cannon salutes, no gate decorations, just nothing but the last flight silently touching down in the middle of the night.
joshuatx@reddit
This airline had zero passenger fatalities and only one major incident which killed only the captain, who succumbed to injuries weeks later. After FOUR decades. It's a damn shame.
BigRedOne76@reddit
It proves what a failed business plan they had. High capital outlay for one of the youngest U.S. fleets, cheap prices and it just doesn’t work when fuel prices jump.
74_Jeep_Cherokee@reddit
While there were issues, this is 90% driven by Pratt and Whitney's piece of shit engines
omega552003@reddit
It wasn't fuel prices, they just never seemed to recover from COVID.
Chance-Example-9118@reddit
Well, that, and bad management. They didn't manage their costs properly. They built an expensive headquarters. None of this ends well.
Jazzlike_Climate4189@reddit
I would argue that fuel prices is what finally did them in, they were still hanging on until he rise in fuel prices could no longer justify their operations at such a loss per flight.
Lazy-Background-7598@reddit
Didn’t they file bankruptcy twice?
ThePrussianGrippe@reddit
Yes but they were restructuring. The fuel price increase is what pushed it over the edge.
Lazy-Background-7598@reddit

BankHottas@reddit
Not just him or the people who elected him. Congress is completely failing its constitutional responsibilities.
DietCherrySoda@reddit
Oh, I see. That's brutal.
What kind of morons elected that crew?
kevin_from_illinois@reddit
I think you could make a good argument that a large portion of their customer base never quite recovered from the financial effects of the pandemic, either. Add even more inflation and high fuel costs, and that has priced a lot of people out of flying.
erdogranola@reddit
it's a business plan that's worked very well in the rest of the world (ryanair, wizz, indigo to name a few) - wonder why it didn't work for spirit

fahque650@reddit

Epcplayer@reddit
Well they also had the flight 2 years ago that took gunfire flying into Haiti, and the Flight attendant got grazed by the bullets. I’d say that was a pretty big incident too
joshuatx@reddit
Non-mechanical error which is why I didn't include it.

With 14 years experience, he will get picked up by a major. However, all his seniority (which is everything) just went poof. He will starting out at the bottom. Again.
BabyWrinkles@reddit
Right? I cannot imagine stepping in to a major flying right seat to a 26 year old who started in the hiring boom of 2022/2023 and upgraded to captain almost immediately. Like… you’ve been flying for Spirit since that kid was 12 years old and now have to figure out CRM when you’ve got 14 years of experience under your belt.
Gonna be rough.

Rough. I remember when Air Berlin went bust 8 years ago or so.
They did have a low altitude flyby, water salute by fire brigade and hundred of workers standing at the gate.
I wonder why they had problems? Here in Europe low cost carrier Ryanair is very profitable, they do have meme status on various issues 😜

The market sucks right now for just about everyone, but I wonder how the piloting industry is.
Go_Loud762@reddit
Also sucks.
Only the legacy carriers (American, Delta, Southwest, United) are hiring in significant numbers. Those four companies may be able to hire all or most of the Spirit pilots, but that will take a year or more.
CarminSanDiego@reddit
As a soon to be applicant, fuck.
Aromatic_Razzmatazz@reddit
UPS. Hell, any cargo. But definitely UPS.
ArmyOFone4022@reddit
My uncle flew cargo and loved it. Landed for the last time last year and he is gone now but he always had stories of the cool places he went too.
pepmup@reddit
Check out Empire Airlines. FedEx Feeder routes. ATR72 600, ATR72, ATR42, C408 and C208B are aircraft flown. They are hiring.
heybuggybug@reddit
That seems like a serious downgrade from flying A320s to a Caravan. And if I’m not mistaken, those feeders are not even part of FedEx
Aromatic_Razzmatazz@reddit
But the pay is supposedly pretty competitive. Of course I have zero clue how you're treated.
pepmup@reddit
Just sharing, Empire Airlines operates and maintains FedEx owned aircraft.
JunkbaII@reddit
UPS is still great, FDX, less so and any of the ACMI carriers, nah
theaviationhistorian@reddit
What about overseas, like Cargolux, DHL, or one of the east Asia cargoliners?
Aromatic_Razzmatazz@reddit
Also my question. They've got to have a need for widebody pilots.
pooserboy@reddit
ACMI’s definitely aren’t comparable to legacies but still solid places to be. Especially if you’re currently unemployed. Wtf are you talking about?
Aromatic_Razzmatazz@reddit
Yeah I agree. You're still in the air most days and the pay is really competitive. I have no clue how you're treated, however. If it's like the rest of cargo you do have some leeway.
latedescent@reddit
We won’t be hiring for a while. Still realigning MD pilots for a while.
whatdoestheregsay@reddit
As a soon to be CFI who is hoping to replace the soon to be applicants, Also fuck.
fly_awayyy@reddit
Only? Regionals are hiring too some ACMI out there too and UPS. Not saying it’ll be same pay or immediate but especially just putting it out there they have some options.
Cheers_u_bastards@reddit
UPS is not hiring. Some interviews, but not hiring.
theaviationhistorian@reddit
They just wrote off the MD-11s from their fleet. So a lot of those open spots will be for those crews.
Go_Loud762@reddit
"Significant numbers."
100 pilots a year at one regional is not a significant number. That is just enough to replace the leaving pilots.
fly_awayyy@reddit
Except its not one regional…it’s all of them. The picture I’m painting is there is a job pool out there for them. This is not even accounting for corporate or Pt.91 gigs.
Go_Loud762@reddit
Look around at the discussion boards. Hiring has slowed across all airlines. The "hiring boom'" from five years ago is dead.
The intro-level pilots who now have the required experience to apply to the 135s and regionals are not getting interviews, much less hired. Sure, some are, but the wave has crashed.
Flooding the market with 2,000+ qualified pilots is going to cause a backlog for many months. Maybe more than a year. That's considering the current economic market, which will change depending on what is Tweeted tomorrow.
IntroductionLeft4369@reddit
Can confirm. 2700 hours in the C-17 and I got rejected without interview to a regional. 😭🤬
Chance-Example-9118@reddit
Keep grinding. It's the American way. Success comes when you least expect it.
Hokie23aa@reddit
Wow. I’m sorry.
asmrhead@reddit
Regionals will take a cadet program CFI over a Spirit pilot. They know the Spirit pilot will bounce the second they can get in at a major.
Possible-Buffalo-321@reddit
Imagine losing 12 years seniority though.
UnrecoveredSatellite@reddit
Unfortunately regionals do not pay that well.
fly_awayyy@reddit
Didn’t I say “not the same pay” also Spirit pilots approved a pay cut before to help keep the company afloat. What the point was is there is hiring.
JayBird1138@reddit
And they would lose seniority and start at the bottom, if I recall what happened with Pam am ?
Go_Loud762@reddit
Correct. Seniority doesn't transfer between companies. Neither does the pay scale.
Da_Vader@reddit
Actually, those routes and planes are valuable. Someone will buy those in bankruptcy and the crew will be hired. Max 6 months of unemployment.
In fact in these circumstances, you have several people retiring and hence will need external employees to fill those gaps.
K_VonOndine@reddit
I wouldn’t count on it. Don’t get your Geopolitical news from any US Corporate Media, especially any Murdoch run companies
TheTalentedAmateur@reddit
*SOME of those planes and routes are valuable from the perspective of acquiring them. OTHERS are valuable from the view point that with the competition gone, prices will now rise.
Existing companies will suck the marrow for whatever has value for THEM, and discard the bones.
Clovis69@reddit
In this economy? With these fuel prices?
superspeck@reddit
Flying overall is down because of the cost of jet fuel thanks to El Cheeto.
theaviationhistorian@reddit
It's been bad since 9/11. A lot of good pilots ended up flying for better carriers in the Middle East and east Asia. Or cargo.
BigRedOne76@reddit
Good market for pilots, it will just be tough starting at the bottom of the seniority list and bottom of the pay scale. Many will leave the industry.
Aromatic_Razzmatazz@reddit
Any international need?
traumalt@reddit
IIRC, European companies never sponsor visas for any flying crew, just because of the way Schengen system works (and doesn't) for visa holders. being an EU national is a hard requirement pretty much.
Office staff are a different story.
Aromatic_Razzmatazz@reddit
I was more thinking ME, that's great to know about EU carriers though.
bumblebeerose@reddit
At the moment probably not, the price of jet fuel is astronomical and a fair number of countries are going to run out of their supplies in the coming months.
asmrhead@reddit
It's a mediocre market for pilots with 121 turbine time and a shit-tacular terrible market for low time CPLs and CFIs.
Joamjoamjoam@reddit
Pilots are in very short supply rn. Whoever buys the plane will take the pilots too.
PositiveRate_Gear_Up@reddit
They’re not attached to the planes, the crews are on a seniority list with the company. When the planes get sold off, the crews will claw at opportunities for any company hiring and will start at the bottom of their seniority list and year 1 of longevity.
So if you were a 14 year captain at spirit, you can apply to be a year 1 FO at American. So you’re going from $350k/year to $120k/year. After likely being unemployed for however long it takes to find new work.
Joamjoamjoam@reddit
They’re pilots with class certification for the new group of planes that just became available. I’m saying whoever buys the planes might need some capable pilots to fly.
Yeah that’s rough. But I bet there’s some conversion of experience. A 14 year captain probably won’t be a captain at American but maybe they get a fast track cause they’ll need more captains too.
Still messed up though. Highly volatile industry
PositiveRate_Gear_Up@reddit
I understand the logic of what you’re saying, I’m just trying to inform you it’s incorrect.
The hope for these pilots to find jobs as captains or with a “fast track” to captains is likely only possible outside the US, as an EXPAT pilot.
US pilot unions have fought long and hard for both seniority (your ability to control your schedule, route, aircraft type, etc) and it’s all predicated on your hire date with that specific airline.
Joamjoamjoam@reddit
Yeah I believe you for sure just sucks
cowhand214@reddit
I have no idea what the market is like but it’s also a seniority issue. You’re not starting over with 14 years of seniority at your new gig. That’s a huge difference in big pay and the routes you bid. It’s the same for flight attendants as well I believe
Lonely-Relative-8887@reddit
Yeah it's one of the shitties things about the airline industry. You move companies you start at year 1 pay no matter what.
quemaspuess@reddit
My best friend is a pilot for the big three and was telling me there’s a shortage, so these pilots should be able to get rehired. Either way, when you’re somewhere for 14 years, clearly you’re happy, so very sad
asmrhead@reddit
There is absolutely not a shortage of low time pilots and this is going to make it worse for them because Spirit pilots will get preference meaning the pyramid scheme that is the CPL-CFI-ATP job progression will grind to a halt for the near term. Even before Spirit there was not a shortage.
Three years ago there was a shortage mostly thanks to experienced 121 pilots taking early retirements during the coof but there have been record numbers of CPLs and CFIs issued in the past 3 years. That has led to a massive glut of low time commercial pilots and CFIs who can't get hired to save their lives (and start making payments on their giant non-academic personal loans for flight training).
PositiveRate_Gear_Up@reddit
The sad truth is, it’s a return to the way things had been for generations.
This industry is BRUTAL, and will spit any of us out without warning…went through it in 2020, have friends who went through that with me…plenty before me, plenty after, and even more now. It sucks.

It sucks for entry level guys, very difficult to get to an airline right now. For experienced spirit guys it shouldn’t be too hard to get a job at a legacy.
Open_Mortgage_4645@reddit
They will. At least the pilots will. Pilots are in high demand. But baggage handlers, and ticketing staff, and gate agents may find themselves unable to land a job with one of Spirit's competitors. It's just a sad fact that many people will be forced to apply for unemployment, and considering seeking employment in another field.
AstuteCouch87@reddit
Pilots are not in high demand right now. These guys might have slightly better luck since they have more experience than new pilots entering the market, but even the pilot market is pretty bad right now, and only getting worse
BeenThereDoneThat65@reddit
That’s not exactly true. Experienced pilots are in high demand.
Low time pilots are not
All the spirit pilots will find jobs.
Right now the hiring outlook at the airlines is for 7600 pilots this year.
Long_Pomegranate2469@reddit
Almost all airlines have announced massive flight reductions because of the fuel shortage and general economic outlook.
They might have been hiring 7600 as calculated last year but I don't think that's accurate rn
BeenThereDoneThat65@reddit
Fuel prices are going down. And can you cite where they have said what you claim?

I was just noting the current oil prices, and gasoline prices over the past 3 weeks or so. I wasn't speaking about jet fuel in particular, because I'm not familiar with the jet fuel market. But what I know is that the price of oil ultimately impacts all petroleum prices. So, perhaps jet fuel is a lagging indicator from the foundational oil prices.
BigRedOne76@reddit

horsebatterystaple0@reddit
There has been a $30-$50 gap between oil futures (probably what you are looking at) and spot oil price (the price that refineries pay for upfront oil delivery). In Southeast Asia, some refineries were paying well over $200 per oil barrel to guarantee delivery because the alternative was going through a long and expensive shutdown process.
BigRedOne76@reddit
Sure about that? I am seeing postings of new training classes at places like Envoy.

Texas_Kimchi@reddit
I mean I get it but the airline industry is rough. The price of gas has put many out of business. Airlines are a pain in the ass to take care of the amount of money being thrown around just to fly a half empty route is insane. I'm shocked airlines still make money.
hchn27@reddit
Yeah...hearing my pilot have a breakdown while im on the flight would make me feel uneasy but at least this was after they landed, Its already stressful enough being a pilot so I hope they get some sort of support...
juneballoon@reddit
Pilots are humans too.
I get so sick and tired of people making comments like this. This is why the FAA cannot evolve their archaic procedures around mental health and why pilots are discouraged from seeking help when they need it. Because people like you keep saying how uneasy they feel when they express regular human emotions or have regular human interactions. This was an appropriate reaction to a situation like this, I’m sure you would be sad about losing your job, and the company you worked for silently going under without wanting to kill everyone else. They are human beings too. They can get emotional and it doesn’t mean that they are going to crash the plane. That stupid rhetoric needs to die.
Plus if you look out the window, it looks like he made the announcement while on the taxiway after landing (he talks about their landing being the second to last). So your comment is just doubly stupid and you’re trying to be controversial for no damn reason other than to perpetuate this nonsense that pilots need to be unfeeling robots that can’t ever show an inkling of humanity.
hchn27@reddit

So don’t come at me talking about how I shouldn’t feel uneasy….most people aren’t into aviation and don’t even like flying, they just want to get to their destination so for you to pretend like some passengers would not have been scared had the pilot said something like this before takeoff regardless of the situation….is ridiculous

jadepartida@reddit
Words and phrases have meaning, the pilot getting a bit choked up getting out a few last words is a very far cry from "breaking down"
buddhahat@reddit
one is a common idiom and the other is you using a word but apparently not meaning that word at all. sorry I didnt know you meant something else.
Much-Impression-5235@reddit
😂😂😂 I was just thinking the same thing, like ‘broski, are you gonna be able to land the plane safely??’ Good thing it was already on the ground.

I went the same direction. "This is your pilot speaking, today is Spirit's last day, and now it's ours too!"
Typical_Fig2894@reddit
I used to see spirit memes all the time “fly spirit, and you’ll become one” 🤣
Jokes aside, this is unfortunate . Say what you want but spirit never had a crash, and allowed for affordable for the average person.
U2ElectricBoogaloo@reddit
Ive never flown Spirit and I know it gets the butt of all the commercial aviation jokes (for their business model and a small contingent of clientele), but it seems like they were really beloved as an operation.
Hussle_Crowe@reddit
I fly about 50x a year. I took one spirit flight a couple years ago and was really really impressed. It was one of the best flying experiences I ever had.
HavingNotAttained@reddit
Yeah, I always had a good experience with Spirit, I’ve heard stories otherwise but my own experience was that they were no less in quality than the other domestic carriers and frankly the crew were generally more upbeat and helpful.

turdmcfurd@reddit
This has nothing to do with Iran. Sad, but Spirit has been struggling for a while now. It would have happened regardless. Hope they all find new jobs quickly.
rali108v5@reddit
Of course it does, the high fuel.prices are crippling airlines, and thise who were struggling are now out of business.
turdmcfurd@reddit
I’ll bite. Sure this was one singular straw but it could have been any other number of straws. More Neo issues, a new regulation regulating pilot hours, or some weird tire plant that forced them to switch tires overnight. I’m being rhetorical but my point is unless something major happened (which I don’t know what, I’m not a CEO) they were in trouble. They first declared Chapter 11 way back in November 2024. Yes high oil prices didn’t help but they have been unsubstantiated for some time. A lot of people bailed out and had to start over. That sucks. Now a lot of people are out of a job. That sucks too. If you want to point, why didn’t the merger go through? That would have been the best option in my opinion.

I'd like to see a videotape of you having that conversation with the pilot. Making that announcement, explaining your position.
Several-Village5814@reddit
The pilot has worked for an unprofitable airline for over 5 years. If this comes as a surprise I have a beach house to sell you in Phoenix Arizona
ConversationMuted967@reddit
As a USA legacy carrier crew member for 28 years, one that went through a merger, when you dedicate your life to a company (and brand) day in and out for years….. this hits me hard. Airline crew members take care of other airline crew when they walk on the plane, no matter the other company! We are in it. We know it.
I feel so much for the employees that stuck it through to the unfortunate end to Spirit Airlines. I hope this pilot gets his wings again soon. I hope to welcome you back in the air, sir. It’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle, an aviation adventure, a passion. It becomes your identity. Do not ever stop climbing, Captain! ✈️

Have a little sympathy for another human who lost his livelihood. It’s not just about the money. True he’s probably ok but people put a lot of blood sweat and tears into their job. Something you may not understand or appreciate yet. Part of learning emotional intelligence is being able to have empathy for another person. Give it a try someday. A little kindness will make you a better human being.

Several-Village5814@reddit

cantpark44@reddit
Since they are union pilots do they have to start a year 1 at another carrier? Or can any of that 14 years carry over?
Several-Village5814@reddit
Why would it carry over. No he wil start year 1
om6jn@reddit
There were some regionals back 5-6 years ago offering longevity match, but I don’t think it’s the case anymore. It was at the peak of hiring for the regionals. Regardless, they’ll always start at Year 1 seniority even with a longevity match.
UnrecoveredSatellite@reddit
In a normal economy I would feel fairly confident that the pilots, mechanics and attendants would find work pretty quick once other airlines snatch up those routes and aircraft. But, these are not normal times and the current administration is a complete joke.

The Feds & Judge who made the outrageous call to block the JetBlue merger should be ashamed of themselves. Rookie move! Shame on them big time
Anti-trust? Where?
Anyone with half a brain and 2 eyes could see that the only way they were going to survive was with a merge. JetBlue was the perfect opportunity to save 17,000+ jobs. Same type of aircraft and many routes that would have complemented each other. A travesty in every sense
Yet they allow the Hawaiian-Alaska merger??
The good people at Spirit got screwed.
I feel for them
pipesIAH@reddit
Spirit and Frontier were in the process of merging when Jetblue came in with their absurd offer. They were told it wouldn't get approved and acted all surprised when the DOJ came back and told them no.
airpab1@reddit
That’s not how it happened, but guess it doesn’t matter at this point
flyingcopper@reddit
What did happen because that’s the story I was told too.
airpab1@reddit
In short, it was Frontier that came in with the absurdly low offers.
JetBlue actually offered to take on a large portion of Spirit’s debt in the potential merger. The synergies between the two companies was substantial…
The "Antitrust" Argument vs. Reality
The Department of Justice and Judge William Young argued that Spirit was a "maverick" that kept prices down for the "cost-conscious" traveler. They believed that if JetBlue absorbed Spirit and converted the planes to a higher-cost, more spacious layout, the "Spirit effect" on ticket prices would disappear. However, critics of that ruling point to several factors that made the block particularly devastating:
The Debt Trap
Spirit was already grappling with over $8 billion in debt. Without the $3.8 billion cash infusion from JetBlue, the airline was essentially a "walking ghost" in a market where fuel prices were rising and engine recall issues were grounding their newest planes.
A "Failing Firm" Defense
Many analysts feel the court didn't take the "failing firm" defense seriously enough—the idea that if the merger didn't happen, the company would vanish entirely. Today’s liquidation is, for many, the "I told you so" moment for that argument.
The JetBlue Struggle: JetBlue also needed the scale. Now, they are left to navigate a high-cost environment without the massive influx of pilots and aircraft they were counting on to fix their own operational bottlenecks.
The Human Cost
Beyond the legal debate, there’s the immediate reality: 17,000 people are now without jobs, and dozens of smaller airports have lost their only low-cost link to major hubs. While the government wanted to protect the “low fares”, the end result is a market with one less player and thousands of stranded travelers.
It’s a tough & unnecessary lesson in the risks of regulatory intervention when a company’s survival is on the line.
In the airline industry, if you aren't one of the "Big Four" (American, Delta, United, and Southwest), you're fighting for scraps while paying similar fixed costs for fuel and labor.
The tragedy of the merger block is that it ignored operational logic:
The "Same Type of Aircraft" Advantage
By both operating the Airbus A320 family, the merger would have eliminated the massive training and maintenance hurdles usually found in airline marriages (like the messy United-Continental or late-stage American-US Airways integrations).
Pilot Fluidity: JetBlue could have moved pilots between routes instantly without expensive retraining.
Maintenance Efficiency: One set of parts, one set of technicians, and a unified supply chain.
Swapping Capacity: If a JetBlue route needed more seats, they could have easily subbed in a Spirit airframe without logistical friction.
The Route Geometry
JetBlue’s "North-South" strength on the East Coast and Spirit’s heavy presence in Florida and Latin America would have created a massive hub-and-spoke network out of Fort Lauderdale (FLL). They could have funneled passengers from the Northeast through Florida to the Caribbean more efficiently than any legacy carrier.
The "Antitrust" Irony
The judge's ruling was built on the idea that Spirit’s "no-frills" model must be preserved to keep fares low. But as we see today, a bankrupt airline can’t keep fares low.
By blocking the deal, the court essentially chose a "slow death" for Spirit over a "transformation" into JetBlue.
The result is exactly what the DOJ claimed they wanted to avoid:
Less Competition: The Big Four now have even more pricing power because a major competitor has vanished.
Service Deserts: Smaller cities that relied on Spirit’s "Ultra Low-Cost" model are now left with zero options or significantly more expensive legacy flights.
Job Losses: Instead of Spirit employees becoming JetBlue employees, 17,000 people are entering a very uncertain job market today.
The "synergies" were there on paper, and in a different regulatory environment, we might be talking about a new "Big Five" instead of a liquidation. It’s a classic case of the "perfect" being the enemy of the "good"—the court wanted to save a specific business model (ULCC) and ended up losing the entire airline.

Downvoter… Dispute what was said
Mav12222@reddit
Its being down voted because the format gives away this is just copy paste form an AI.
airpab1@reddit
So what! Does that make it any less accurate? Gimme a break
Mav12222@reddit
Considering AI can just make things up based on what it thinks you want to see, a lot of people don;t trust it, and especially those who just copy paste. It comes off as the person doing so as being lazy and gullible.
A direct copy paste signals that you didn't even bother to check if what its saying is true.
airpab1@reddit
Well aware of AI’s shortcomings omnipotent one. I work for a leading AI company. But you probably knew that because you’re omnipotent
I did check facts. All that was laid out was indeed accurate
asmrhead@reddit
Oh are we going to play the "I can't think for myself but I can type prompts into an AI LLM" game? Okay then, refute this:
airpab1@reddit
Yes. Can’t forget that Spirit “chose” to go with JetBlue’s higher offer. In rethinking this whole thing, seems Jetblue was a much better Chess player
JetBlue probably thought that if the merger goes through, great. We get airplanes, we get gates, we get some new cities, we get instant routes, a much stronger Florida presence, we get Airbus airplanes & crews, etc. And if it doesn’t go through, we at least eliminate the Frontier merger and accelerate Spirit’s demise
JetBlue likely had a strong inkling that their offer wouldn’t fly. They offered substantially more money than Frontier & sweetened the deal with a breakup fee if the deal didn’t get past antitrust…a seemingly calculated move to at the very least, derail the Frontier merger effectively preventing a mega low-cost carrier from becoming reality & accelerating Spirit’s eventual demise
In short, Spirit seemingly went for the money instead of what made “the most” sense long term. Costly miscalculations, unforeseen & unfortunate past & present circumstances & little bit of bad luck. Sad

Have you seen JetBlue they were not and are not the perfect opportunity. JetBlue is next in line with a $330M+ loss this quarter then would’ve overpaid $1B+ for Spirit then to end up with 90+ planes grounded any given day. That would’ve ended both companies. JetBlues CEOs own words were “it was a blessing in disguise”
airpab1@reddit
How smart is the JetBlue CEO considering the position there in??
Just because he didn’t have vision doesn’t mean the opportunities weren’t there.
fly_awayyy@reddit
First of all it’s a “She” as of now. How smart? Idk dude $1B isn’t chump change also with 90+ planes grounded needing payments. Idk how smart you need to be to model out the numbers and realize it’s mental. That’s not even accounting for the costs of integrating the airline into one…
airpab1@reddit
290 total aircraft
10–20 temporarily out of service on average
No evidence of anything remotely close to 90 idle aircraft
fly_awayyy@reddit
10-20? And no evidence of 90? Are you ok? You need to do your research. Pratt and Whitney has mad then multiple payments of $100M+ for their shortfalls in compensation. JetBlues forecast of groundings was always 10+ and peaked at around 20. 70 at Spirit +20 from JetBlue =90? No?

DearKick@reddit
I think it is entirely possible that a merger of either of the two options would have resulted in an even larger failure eventually and thus even more people out of jobs. Spirit was hemorrhaging that much money.

I would assume, since the demand for air travel will be about the same regardless of how many airlines there are, that the majority of Spirit’s crew would be picked up by other airlines.

Spirit was failing long before the spike in fuel prices. They had major cash flow issues for the past few years.
There is a reason they have been in merger talks since 2022 and filed for Chapter 11 in 2024.
Add to that the issues with their Pratt and Whitney powered A320s, and it would have been over even if Jet A was $0.99/gal
