walked into the kitchen to my flatmate completely earnestly preparing this meal. the egg was hard boiled and the buns were buttered with vegan olive oil spread.

So is it fake butter made from olive oil or did someone manage to fool him into thinking regular olive oil wasnt vegan?
MuchDevelopment7084@reddit
Umm, olive oil is vegan. At least I've never heard of it being squeezed out of a cow.
Extra_Actuary8244@reddit
They’re not calling it vegan olive oil spread to imply that olive oil isn’t typically vegan they’re calling it vegan olive oil spread because spread isn’t typically vegan as it normally refers to butter
Bannedtt@reddit
They said spread, it's an olive oil mayo.
Southern_Sprinkles_6@reddit
Gimmick labeling. Like “protein” for something that has 5 grams added to the previous 1 gram or “gluten free” on things that are naturally gluten free. Sometimes for gluten its meant to denounce that no gluten was near the process at all though so that gets a bit of a pass. Im assuming they’re doing the same thing here but truly… what part of the cycle would ever include something that wasnt vegan? Maybe how it was pollinated/collected? Idk.
Mother-Valuable7568@reddit
YEAH I NOTICED THAT. It's even a search option now in Doordash. People really don't know they're already getting protein in SO many foods.
Southern_Sprinkles_6@reddit
And they never bother to compare the difference. $4 more for 2 more grams of protein. Ignorance makes them money I guess.
Mother-Valuable7568@reddit
Right. Organic also does a lot of heavy lifting.
Southern_Sprinkles_6@reddit
Organic pasture farm raised whole-food gluten free cage free free range eggs
Mother-Valuable7568@reddit
Lol. Vegan apples. Cuddled beef.
Mother-Valuable7568@reddit
Pork now with more protein.
Southern_Sprinkles_6@reddit
Protein+! (For $6.99 extra per pound)
nobody0163@reddit
A pound of extra protein for $6.99? I'll take it.
Adventurous-Vast281@reddit
Olive oil is vegan but olive oil spread my not be due to what ever emulsifiers or processing aids the manufacturer used to get it to that texture, consistency, and solidified state. Anything labeled "vegan" that is commercially sold, at least legally, can not contain any animal byproducts i.e. gelatin.
Southern_Sprinkles_6@reddit
No for sure I get that. But to me it comes off like Crisco all-vegetable shortening having a separate line of products for the same mix but labeled vegan. Terms like these are being abused left and right for the sake of profit by means of “breaking into xyz market” its hard to know when its in good faith or just another price gouging gimmick for a product that already exists without the buzzword labels.
Adventurous-Vast281@reddit
Totally get that marketing, by it's nature, is disingenuous but in this case, it is also a legal distinction. It's not like when popcorn is marketed as a "whole grain food". "Vegan" in this case legally distinguishes it from similar products.
AlbiTheRobot@reddit
Time for my “um akshually” moment!
Items labeled as “gluten free” must be made in a dedicated gluten free facility (at least in the US), so an item that is naturally gluten free being labeled as gluten free is actually helpful to people with severe celiac disease. Some are so sensitive they cannot have anything that has come in contact with gluten, even via shared machinery.
Adventurous-Vast281@reddit
That is categorically untrue. It just has to test <10ppm to be labeled "gluten-free" in th U.S. Also, if you do switch product types, you can use the same equipment but it does require a full cleaning and sanitization. Now, for organic food processing, there has to be a dedicated "line" but it does not need to happen in a different facility.

UncleJimsStoryCorner@reddit
For extra shitty points; did they boil the egg in the bean juice to avoid using another pot?

We like beans on toast, and don't knock it before you try.
Melt cheese on top, and it's a banger of a quick meal, it's not like us Brits are out there eating it every single day, it's just a quick snack when your hungry.
You yanks can't say anything, I've seen some of the absolute abominations you rustle up.

If the egg was soft boiled, fried, or poached, this would be fine. Butter beats any butter-substitute, though.

DAWGS. Anyways yeah it's a travesty of a meal. Why does he have vegan olive oil but also eats egg? 🥚

He's excused.
You gotta be pretty damn good at cooking Vegan food. It requires a bit of effort.
I'd suggest to your mate to watch a YouTuber named Andrew Bernard
He probably makes some of the best vegan food I've ever seen.
yairen_skamos@reddit (OP)
she herself isn't vegan but our other flatmate is. no point buying a second, non-vegan butter and wasting room in the fridge
