i refuse to believe people seriously think that climate change is fake...
Lighting@reddit
What is this garbage?
The guy he's interviewing, Lindzen, was caught red-handed making false claims about climate data because he was (IMHO) too stupid or lazy to double check that the Heritage Foundation's dude messed up in feeding him "data analysis."
He claimed there was NO evidence of any global warming in another oil-funded talk that was so bad it (IMHO) smacked of academic fraud.
I wrote about Lindzen (IMHO) throwing his reputation away with that above stuff here
AdmiralAsshat69@reddit
I mean, the one thing about total ecological collapse is that the complaining will absolutely stop one day.
UnluckyWriting@reddit
Honestly I think a lot of the panicked “we must act immediately” messaging stopped because it became clear we are never going to act. Like th people who used to be advocating for climate policies just gave up.
UnravelTheUniverse@reddit
Yep after Trump's re-election multiple climate substackers I follow quit and gave up as it's now clear beyond all doubt that humanity is too stupid collectively to save itself from the coming disasters.
rnobgyn@reddit
There’s a strange freedom there. Like, I’m really just looking to live a fun, good life now that I’ve accepted that we’re just fucked. Life is gonna continue to get shittier, everything will change over again many times, there will probably be some major major event in my lifetime that surpasses anything we’ve seen, and I’m just riding out life into the water wars making music, enjoying the little things, and loving those around me.
Avoate@reddit
It's weird because I'm a young adult, currently saving for a retirement plan. But every time I look at the numbers I wonder if I will ever be able to use them.
UnravelTheUniverse@reddit
I just don't worry about retirement. When I am too old to work and take care of myself I will just check out from this earth experience. I have a feeling in a few decades in response to our AI climate apocalypse hellscape those suicide machines from Futurama will be everywhere.
shewholaughslasts@reddit
That's true. That's me. I'm continuing in a lackluster manner devoid of all hope and motivation. Like I guess I'll still recycle and not litter but honestly I'm not terribly concerned about needing to recycle. I know there's no hope so I just try when I have energy.
Leaves more time to grow my garden and prep for even higher food prices.
No_Skirt_4689@reddit
All you need to do is visit Mexico or any other third world country to see the folly in recycling. Same goes for anything climate-saving related - humanity will never reach a critical mass of EV/solar panels/recycling/water conservation/meat consumption because 99% of people and governments don’t/can’t give a shit. Defeatist? Sure. Realistic? Yes.
Lost_Birthday_3138@reddit
There's only one thing that would give me actual hope for the future: "someone" stopping the billionaires and destroying their media. It's been fooling and distracting the masses from our awful predicament for decades. Every year we lose is causing exponentially more misery for every living thing.
SplashTarget@reddit
what state are you in?
Lost_Birthday_3138@reddit
Why, fed?
SplashTarget@reddit
lol no
Global emissions have gone down twice in this century.
First time was Great Financial Crisis
Second time was COVID
https://www.carbonbrief.org/iea-coronavirus-impact-on-co2-emissions-six-times-larger-than-financial-crisis/
These were also times where the Global GDP went down.
Global GDP (an important economic indicator for billionaires and their government allies) moves in tandem with Global CO2 levels.
The pursuit of 24/7 non-stop economic expansion by the top trillion dollar economies of the world is clearly the problem.
Emissions-based targets have failed, time to target GDP.
The top trillion dollar economies of the world that are producing more CO2 than they need to on an annual basis are the ones that have to change.
In the case of America, not everyone has an equal share of the blame
Some states are richer and produce more CO2 than other states.
So if we had some sort of collective action in the major states (not necessarily the whole population, just 3.5%), and the collective action lasts a long enough time, then you'd see something with some serious impact to a status quo that is driving us to destruction.
Off the top of my head, the collective action could either be
-a strike that lasts an unknown # of days
-people protesting their local governments for policies that reduce state GDP (while maintaining decent living standards)
-people deciding as a group not to buy anything they don't need
Any one of these would do some serious damage to GDP, and thus reduce the CO2 levels.
California has a population of 30 something million (25% republicans, 45% dems, 22.7% aren't with a party, IDK what the other 7.3% are)
If a significant amount of those people take part, we can (hopefully) actually get something impactful done.
climatecrash75@reddit
Count me in that group.
Kiss_of_Cultural@reddit
Also I think most of the panicked “act immediately” messaging stopped the second scientists realized we had passed certain tipping points. Like you said, it was clear no one was going to act, but the window to do the most good already passed.
To top it all off, the wealthy and governments don’t want climate action, they want status quo, so get back to work. Scientists have made projections for decades about best vs worst case scenarios and everything in between, but publicly stating the true urgency if the worst case scenario plot has been enough to get silenced and funding slashed.
Kicooi@reddit
Yep. No use telling people we need to do something if it’s already too late to make any meaningful change. It’s like the last act of “Don’t Look Up,” in which the scientists decide to just move on and enjoy what little time remains.
PyrocumulusLightning@reddit
The response to the Covid crisis revealed that a critical mass of people would rather risk dying horribly than give up a single inconvenience or cope with reality.
Are people like that going to so much as make their cities more resilient to the changes that are coming, never mind legislate fundamental lifestyle changes intended to save a "world" they neither understand nor care about? Nope.
On top of that, it's dispiriting how much emotional energy people are willing to pour into flipping out about what's in everyone's pants. It's like ignoring a structure fire to worry about whether some guy is wearing pink.
Have people always reacted to an existential threat by obsessing over a sexually titillating scapegoat? Oop, here comes a tsunami, 🌊 better get a quick wank in. Remember, as the waves close over our heads, we performed our gender roles as God ordained.
MaddogBC@reddit
It's worse than that, the risk to them was low for the most part, they knew they were risking other people. Vulnerable people. They are awful and it's a shame we have to share what's left of this earth with them.
PyrocumulusLightning@reddit
Similarly, people who've never been hungry don't care whether there's famine in the global South. I'm not sure if it's true, but it feels like wealth, even relative wealth, makes people unconcerned with the wellbeing of others; even actively hostile to projects that promote the public good. Or they have one pet cause and that's all they can relate to.
If it hasn't been studied, it should be.
MaddogBC@reddit
Yes I think you're on to something. I spent a lifetime working in the construction industry. Solving problems for men who thought they were wealthy, some were for sure. That's the only real segment of the Canadian population where I ran into Trump supporters or at least ultra conservatives.
I think they believed such beliefs would allow them to gain and hoard wealth. Pulling the ladder up behind themselves as a philosophy. The ultimate fuck you, I got mine.
MaddogBC@reddit
I live not far from David Suzuki, I had him come to our elementary school to talk about the dwindling nature. A LONG time ago. He's always been a bit of a hero.
Seeing him just give up after a lifetime of battle felt right. Why bother? He's too old to make a difference and despite talking until he was red in the face for 50 years, nobody listened. We're fucked and all we can do now is ride it out.

I have zero doubt that humanity will be blaming all the wrong things right up until the last of us are finally gone. Let’s be real, science and critical thinking will go extinct long before ignorance and dogmatism.
l31l4j4d3@reddit
Science, critical thinking, common courtesy and mindfulness are on their way out already. The door’s hitting them in the ass.
Awatts2222@reddit
You're right. I believe we have a clear delineation between the fading enlightenment
era and and the new dark age. We had a President of the U.S. call a deadly disease a hoax.
Then proceeded to get air lifted from the White House for that disease he called a hoax.
The people re-elected him. That is the clearest line possible when it comes to the new
dark age.
snertwith2ls@reddit
I don't think the alarmism stopped, it's just that all the scientists were fired and the media bought out by the climate change denialists. What stopped was the flow of scientific information in favor of straight up propaganda. That's not really the same thing as "they gave up on alarmism".
heimeyer72@reddit
Not even that. Nothing remotely like that ever happened. It's a bullshit claim like "Yesterday at 11:11, the sun went blue. How can you not know that, just look at the sun, it is still blue. It's also all over the news. Scientists all over the world are very worried."
heimeyer72@reddit
Since I got downvoted for that, did anybody understand what I was doing? In reality:
the sun didn't turn blue
looking at it would show that
so only ppl who believed the lie blindly could "know" it
and it was not in the news.
and no scientist was worried of the sun turning blue
Because it never happened.
Just like "Climate ~~trolls~~ experts gave up on ~~their nonsense~~ the truth, overnight" never happened. The guy was pulling a trump by telling a huge lie and trying to ridicule people who don't believe it.
snertwith2ls@reddit
"Most people are saying..."
vagabondoer@reddit
Also I think a lot of people who know what is up have stopped trying to convince the willfully ignorant. I know I have. I don’t have time for that when I have a garden to tend.

Science and critical thinking have already gone through their door and they're not returning.
"Begun, the Dark Age has."
astronot24@reddit
Science and critical thinking died when they got hijacked as a means of control. The "experts" you hear about in mainstream media are paid off for, meanwhile the actual experts are being silenced.
The only way we're gonna be gone is under the pretense of "the greater good"... that includes the climate change, overpopulation and other bullshit narratives.
darkpsychicenergy@reddit
As a means of control… of what? They’ve always been means of control, for better and worse, depends what we’re talking about controlling.
The rest of that paragraph is true, anyway. The IPCC reports most commonly deferred to in mainstream media, on the rare occasion that the mainstream media actually and seriously talks about such things as climate change, are the products of editing and censorship processes conducted by corporate and political leaders. The uncensored, unfiltered assessments from scientists not controlled by corporate and government interests are far more grim.
Enjoy your optimism though.
RichardsLeftNipple@reddit
Given the history of those things. It's always an uphill battle that takes a generation or more to overcome.
Waiting a generation or two with climate change will be too late. Yet we seem to be incapable of not doing just that.
Lost_Birthday_3138@reddit

Yeah it's still up though.

not sure what you want me to do? i'm personally not going to take down the post.
travelstuff@reddit
Unlink the video or make a new post? Or yes, takr it down. You didn't even add anything, you just shared someone else's video.
But upvotes are important 🙄 it's funny because you indicate you don't believe people don't know about Climate Change, and therefore are angry people know but aren't doing anything about it.
I personally find it hard to believe you don't know who this guy is or the crap he peddles and how it's harmful. But now, you do. Yet you're advertising his content and therefore doing harm. Yet you won't do anything about it, despite being the only one who can do something since its your post.
So you're really not that different from the people who don't take climate change seriously and don't do anything about it. You're doing the exact same thing right now, just about a different topic that you dont take seriously or dont think is real. So next time you're angry about CC deniers, remember how you felt when the OC suggested you to take this video down, and you'll know exactly how the CC deniers feel and why they act like that. Heck most of them will say "not sure what you want me to do about it" just like you did.
No_Candidate2195@reddit (OP)
to address your points: - i don't have to take down the post. there's no reason for me to take it down. i'm going to keep it up because... i can. free will, deal with it. - i'm not american so i didn't know who jordan peterson actually was. this post was originally a crosspost from a more popular subreddit of people who seemed to be climate deniers. i'm not advertising his content and you have no proof that i am so don't make baseless assumptions over a crosspost. - i don't live on reddit unlike many people and therefore idc about upvotes. upvotes mean literally nothing to me.
very strange thing to get hostile over.
travelstuff@reddit
FTFY.
No one is being hostile, I'm pointing out how you are exactly like the people doing nothing about Climate change because they don't have to, don't want to, they have free will so we can just deal with it. Just like you are advertising JP content & promoting it by sharing it to more platforms (the post is the proof), you didn't know it was harmful when you posted it but you know now, and you won't do anything about it because you don't consider it important, or the action is just too hard. Again, identical response to people who don't care about climate change. If you can't be bothered to educate yourself or make an effort to change once you know better, how can you expect others to?
You want the entire world to change how it operates but won't do anything about a reddit post, which is far easier to change than anything related to CC.
No_Candidate2195@reddit (OP)
you're reaching for the stars. you're acting like me posting some guy whose famous is advertising and promoting his content, even though clearly people already know about him anyways. he's not some obscure boogeyman so it literally doesn't matter. infact you're the only person who has an issue with it, nobody else cares that i crossposted his content.
not sure how you're gleaming all of that from my post and replies but okay. nice assumptions.

Ocean current slowing down massively.
If ocean currents, particularly the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), stopped, it would trigger a catastrophic, irreversible climate crisis. Europe would freeze with temperatures dropping up to 20°C, sea levels on the U.S. East Coast would rise rapidly, the Amazon would suffer extreme drought, and global ecosystems would collapse.
Major Environmental and Global Consequences:
Profound European Cooling: The halt of heat transport from the tropics would cause severe cooling in Europe, creating winters so cold they could resemble an ice age. Rapid Sea Level Rise: Water would accumulate along the eastern seaboard of the United States, raising sea levels by up to half a meter.
Shifting Tropical Rain Belts: Dramatic shifts in tropical rains would lead to severe droughts in some regions (like the Amazon) and floods in others, disrupting agricultural production.
Severe Marine Ecosystem Disruption: Ocean life would suffer, as the nutrient transport that supports marine ecosystems would stop. Increased Storm Severity: Despite cooling in the north, tropical water would become warmer, intensifying hurricanes and creating more severe weather.
Why Currents Might Stop:
Ocean currents depend on a "conveyor belt" of sinking cold, salty water. Climate change-induced melting of polar ice introduces fresh water into the ocean, reducing its density and preventing the water from sinking, which can shut down the circulation. Recent studies suggest an AMOC collapse is a real possibility due to global warming, with a significant risk of occurring in the coming century.

you're totally right. on a similar note, i wonder how much help/hurt it does to comment on facebook to support initiatives like improving micromobility (which i think could make us more collapse resilient, or at least possibly hurt a teeny tiny less as collapse worsens) as i want leadership to know theres public support of something, but also i inevitably always get into comment wars with maga as a result
smackson@reddit
I haven't heard that word micromobility before, and I like it.
But then I realized we've already seen it play out in the arena of mouth-breathing self-tards: "15-minute cities", where you wouldn't need a car, or even a bus/tram/metro, for most of your daily needs, are apparently an affront to freedom and holiness and furthermore they're part of the plat to get you eating bugs and owning nothing and liking it.
nommabelle@reddit
15 minute cities are definitely a sad point to me. i would absolutely LOVE to live in one. i really dont understand their reluctance to it, unless someone forces them to live in one
idk its just another example why i have no hope for future. my husband and i just had the 'kid or not' talk yet again as we're recently married, and collapse plays a big part into my decision not to have a child, and he's tried to get me to decide without considering collapse, but i also cannot ignore it and dont want to bring a child into it
thooters@reddit
why marry if you are not growing a family? lol like what’s the point- why not date around / have fun..? seems rather limiting w/o any upside of children
nommabelle@reddit
what an odd comment. because we love eachother and want to be officially known as that? because we want him to be on my health insurance (he's retired)? because we want him to get a greencard and a marriage is required to do that? all 3 of those are true
literally the weirdest comment i've ever seen on reddit. why should children change whether you get married? loads of people have children without marriage. such a weird comment.
darkpsychicenergy@reddit
At the core, it’s not too terribly different from the crowd that insists that population and individual actions do not matter, all scarcity is artificial, and everything is because of the 1% consumption and inefficient, unequal distribution.
We don’t handle the concept of collective responsibility well, or the concept that we are all, to varying degrees, participants and short term beneficiaries of a destructive system, regardless of whether or not we consciously choose for it to be that way and despite the fact that none of us asked to be involved in the first place.
shewholaughslasts@reddit
Well I used to handle the concept of collective responsibility, and really hoped and dreamed for it to be true and that we all cared. Or at least if one day we all cared that it would make an impact.
Then corporations became people and billionaires are allowed to break all the laws while our "collective" regulatory agencies are dismantled and our forest service and research arms are destroyed. Oh and all the rest along with it.
Seems like those who believe in the power of the collective are in suvh a distant minority that there's no hope.
thooters@reddit
the power of the collective has historically proven itself to have a tremendous capacity for evil 😭😭 can’t believe ur unironically using that rhetoric lol

No one will ever be able to convince me that the rural hate of big cities isn’t out of jealously.
As someone stuck in a small Midwest town, I am jealous of people who live in places like NYC or LA, but at least I’m honest about it instead of pretending I love it here and voting for fascists out of repressed jealously.
Cloaked42m@reddit
Dude, they had City Mouse/Country Mouse cartoons from the 30s.
It's just different lifestyles and needs. Cities trend towards liberal because of more access to a broad array of lifestyles and culture. Big cities are mostly resilient to change. They can take a hit and move on because of diverse businesses.
Rural areas trend conservative because small towns can't handle big changes. They tend to collapse and turn into ghost towns if a single factory closes.
PrairieFire_withwind@reddit
And all those people in the big cities dream of a small, quiet rural life. Otherwise insta and tiktok would bot be selli g them the dream of YOUR actual life.

Frostyrepairbug@reddit
I live rural, and it's anything but quiet. There's always a chainsaw, a lawn mower, a leaf blower, a rock crusher, a bulldozer going at all hours of daylight. Plus, a lot of people drive those tank-trucks, and put the pedal to the floor just to zoom up a hill.
MaddogBC@reddit
Nice rural place you got there. No one else in this world could possibly have a different experience right?
smackson@reddit
Yes there's the whole range of experiences. But very very few people actually live as deep as the places where you see nobody on your 10 day canoe trip (or you would have seen them)..
Getting out of the cities and big towns, for most, does still mean the kind of "rural" where there are other people living within hearing distance.
And if there aren't, someone will by the property nearest yours and start making noise next year.
Just my experience.
MaddogBC@reddit
Yes that's true for sure, and the older you get the more you need to be closer to amenities. Camping and living are pretty separated, I'm lucky where I am, a city to me is 250k. Another one within a few hours drive 750k I've only been to a handful of times. I hate it.
We're on an orchard and can see our neighbours on the other side when the trees are out of bloom. Noise is ever present. Noise cancelling headphones are pretty effective actually.

abstrakt42@reddit
Well since you said nobody will convince you otherwise, I will keep this short, but I have a very detailed response in mind. Speaking for myself and my wife, we are both educated, well traveled, hard working, very progressive people and we live in a rural area. In fact we both dream of another home one day even further away from everything. Cities give us both massive anxiety, and leaving the lights, the noises, the crowds, the endless cycle of earning and spending, any time we’re headed back into the dark backroads and away from it all - that’s when we can finally breathe easily again. Cities are overwhelming and generally not happy places.
There’s a lot of factors that are probably influencing the people you’re referring to here, I know some of them too, but I don’t think it’s jealousy. Mostly ignorance. They’re a different story entirely.
MaddogBC@reddit
I was going to type something meaningful up but decided against it, thanks. I grew up rural and moved to the city. My wife and I absolutely hate to have to travel there now. One of the worst things in our life as far as chores go. The car exhaust alone chokes me, makes me feel sick the entire time.
Nature is a boon that recharges my battery, the further away from people the better. My favourite vacation is a 10 day canoe trip where I don't see another soul. That is joy.
Fast-Armadillo1074@reddit
Maybe you have a point. To be honest when I said “nothing will convince me otherwise” that was more of a rhetorical choice than a statement of fact.
Moving to a big city is something that remains an unrealistic fantasy for me over the next several years at least (unless I plan on being homeless in the city). I’ve never actually lived in one or had the chance to, so for me it’s more of an aspirational fantasy. Maybe if I lived in a city I wouldn’t actually like it that much.
Saying that I am not jealous of people who live in cities, or that I don’t fantasize about living in one, however, would be a lie.
abstrakt42@reddit
You touched on it here, but I’ll expand: part of being able to afford to live in a large city is having a high paying job in a big city, and using that high paying job to just just flush that cash down the toilet literally everything from rent to food to transportation and everything in between, prices on all of which are jacked through the roof. That’s the cycle I was referring to. 50k in the suburbs can be 200-300k in some cities, and a nightmarish level of stress and overstimulation that goes with it.
I’ll take a simple life in a beautiful area far from the hustle and bustle. There’s so much more to life than grind, rinse, and repeat.
I’ll definitely encourage you to travel more and spend more time in more places, including cities around the country and around the world. If your experience amounts to one day in one city one time, please trust me when I tell you you’re missing a few data points. It’s not a movie.

Several months ago I used AI to do a budget estimate on how much I would spend living in my first choice neighborhood in Chicago with all expenses included and it came up with something like 50k. I’m not into consumerism and I don’t have that many needs. If I made 200k+ I wouldn’t even know what to do with the money and I’d probably be retired within a decade.
The main issue for me is that living in rural areas is very lonely. I have nothing in common with the people in my hometown and feel like an alien. There is no one to date. The only jobs I can find here are minimum wage. At one place, I quit because they started asking me to clock out and then do extra work off the clock for them. At another, I had a manager who would often yell at me and tell me I was stupid and I just put up with it because I needed the money — I actually sort of befriended that manager because I was so lonely — in retrospect it was basically Stockholm syndrome.
I know people say that you have to be super rich to live in a city, but I don’t know how I can keep living here.
This is a message I received from someone else on my town because he didn’t like a comment I made on Facebook. This is not the only person who has sent me messages like this either. I feel bad for the city people who are missing out on such great neighbors /s

That guy is insane, I'm so sorry you're stuck there. If you can somehow get a bus or rv you can cut out 75% if your expenses and actually use the thing for income. In my long experience, I believe that at some innate level, people realize that they are less educated, less well-off, and less able to have interesting and exciting less than others. In certain personality types, this envy and jealousy turn to self-loathing, which turns to an irrational hatred and fear of those people. This of course leads to a desire to hurt the people they hate, even if (possibly especially if) it hurts themselves, too.

Yeah, as long as the number of emissions is equal or above zero, the average temperature will continue to rise. We must get the emissions to a value BELOW ZERO to just slow it down. And we're still not doing what must be done.

It isn't human psychology that's holding the species back, it's the fact that it's been corrupted by the wealthy and society is only based on consumption and greed to ensure they always have willing participants to throw the entire world under the bus at the can be even more wealthy. If society cared about anything other than bread and circuses then it would be a different world.
You can't really blame people for being conditioned to be mindless consumers when that's what they have been taught since day 1 and what they are surrounded by every day. In addition, there is no off ramp, we can't just decide to go homestead and drop out of society unless you are already wealthy.
I think tons of people would have different opinions if they didn't have their brains enslaved as a child.

SplashTarget@reddit
I agree that it's likely that we should be in damage control mode, but I don't think the whole world needs to change.
Personally, I think the top trillion dollar economies of the world that are producing more CO2 than they need to on an annual basis, are the ones that have to change.
Ideally it should be a government action, but if government is unwilling to act, then we need millions of people from these countries to take matters into their own hands.
heimeyer72@reddit
Idk about damage control mode, IMHO we're beyond the point where we could do something. Like a train without brakes on a hilltop, it started rolling and we were still pushing it, it took up some speed, some denied that the train was rolling at all, then when it was obviously too fast and denying that was too obvious a lie, they claimed it was not humanity's fault. And now humanity is pondering how to affix ropes on the train and have people pulling on them.
While most of humanity is still pushing the train downwards. And some people found that their own efforts to pull on the ropes and stop the train don't do anything (because their efforts are countered by the vastly higher number of people who still push.)
Agreed, that would help the most. Some 3rd world countries' pushing is negligible.
Yeah, some governments put a bit of effort into not going the worst path. It's not enough. Some governments can't do anything. And some have interests in dealing with oil and thereby making it worse. Not to mention wars.*
Overall? The train is still driven downhill, with just a bit less force. Even slowing it down would take some huge effort and because of the inertia it wouldn't have an immediate effect. And we would need to stop the train before the methane in the northern permafrost ground would be set free.
IMHO we should still do everything in our (collective) power to slow it down, in the hope that the next 3 or 4 generations of humans find ways to stop it, maybe even reverse it. Right now such ways are way beyond our abilities so the odds are against us.
SplashTarget@reddit
What do you think would be the impact of ending interest on all loans?
heimeyer72@reddit
Phew. I don't have anything to do with banking. It's kind of THE business model of banks, so... I would have to read a lot about it to give a thorough answer.
Why do you ask?
SplashTarget@reddit
Alright here's my thinking.
Our problem is we want the average global surface temp. to not go too far above 15C, or else it's a bunch of death +destruction.
To do that we got to get our global CO2 emissions to drop.
Our global CO2 numbers are going up because we're all reliant on fossil fuels.
For decades scientists +politicians have been saying we need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and try different sources (nuclear, hydro, solar, wind, etc.).
Emission targets were agreed on, but had no meaningful impact.
What got left out of the discussion of climate policy?
An examination of why we're using these fossil fuels to begin with.
We're not using it for fun, it's being used to chase after the objective of non-stop economic expansion (as measured by GDP).
If you want non-stop economic expansion, you have to use energy 24/7.
This is obviously a destructive way to do things, but we're still doing this.
Why?
The main reasons.
Corporations want to keep making money (to make profits, and pay off interest-based loans), their government allies are for this because they're owned by them, and so want to keep growing the economy.
This of course can't be done without the help of normal people.
So how do you get them to keep the wheels turning?
Unmet needs, and interest-based loans gets people to keep turning the wheels.
-Make them work to have their needs met (Why work for money if your needs are met? How else will banks and corporations get rich? How else will GDP grow?)
-Burden them with interest-based loans so that they're working to pay off debts (Student loans, credit card debt, mortgages, and auto loans)
-Make them want shiny products that don't last long (thanks to planned obsolescence) and might even have to take loans to afford.
If people were only concerned about meeting their needs, they can more easily stop turning the wheel once they're able to get their needs met.
But (unlike loans that have no interest) loans based on interest take longer to pay off, as they are constantly expanding.
If the loans keep expanding, then people must keep working, they must keep using fossil fuels, they must keep expanding economic output, if they don't they lose everything.
So you end up with resource consumption rates that are greater than the rate of regeneration, and that's a recipe for disaster.
heimeyer72@reddit
I see, at least I hope I got your point. Thank you very much.
And I agree with everything... Then again, I can't stop thinking about the first oil was train oil from whales. Once mineral oil was discovered, the economy shifted to its use and made hunting whales for train oil obsolete, probably saving them from extinction.
We (at least the so called "1st world" countries are now at a point where we would be able to cover our energy needs from renewables and nuclear (even though I'm not a friend of nuclear, mainly because of radioactive waste and leaving that stuff for the next umpteenth generations to take care off but it's better that burning fossils, IMHO). So WHY didn't the shift to renewables take place? Because Big Oil, who knew about global warming and its causes since the 1970, build a "society" of global warming deniers. That was a smart and absolutely evil thing to do.
And now we have another "problem": AI data centers using up electricity like it is nothing.
SplashTarget@reddit
Yea oil companies played some dirty tricks, but the damage wouldn't be so intense if we didn't have to run capitalism 24/7, and chase after non-stop economic growth.
You know a study came out and said that, with proper distribution, and efficient tech. use, 30% of the global energy and resources used in 2019 could give every person on Earth a decent standard of living?
Abstract
If 30% of 163,695 TWh (49,109 TWh) is enough for ~8.5 billion people in 2019, then that means in 2019 we were using enough energy and resources for ~28.3 billion people.
And since we haven't dialed back the usage levels, we're still using more energy +resources than the world actually needs.
All to expand GDP, and pay liabilities.

People from entirely different parts of the world and cultures have been influenced by them because a lot of content creators have been making money off of translating and posting American schizo-conspirology in their part of the Internet.
My mother and a few other relatives went full Q because of this, and she despises America and everything American. And PROUDLY not speaking English or any foreign languages, for that matter. She even calls Trump with a diminuitive (affectionate) name and thinks he's "her guy" for helping Russia (we're Ukrainian). ‘Case closed’: 99.9% of scientists agree climate emergency caused by humans
Anarchaeologist@reddit
IIRC 97% was based on a study that's several decades old at this point.
Last time I looked, a few years ago, there were 6 accredited publishing climate scientists by my count who dispute human-caused climate change. That's such an insignificant number it rounds it rounds down to 0.

Both Peterson and Lindzen have benefited from funding and payments from fossil fuel interests.

Lindzen's colleagues and former students have described him as a contrarian. He's called into question the link between 2nd hand smoke and cancer.

Is Peterson even alive still? Haven't heard from him in ages. I know he recently had a major health issue. He always looked unhealthy. His all meat diet that he so raved about hasn't worked all that well it seems.

Peterson again? Fucking quack. I'm so fed up with him and his daughter spewing nonsense into the ether. I think, they and Rogan were the chief contributors of people's utter lack of trust in any kind of scientific authority, as they started grifting twice as hard during rona.
Saying common sense things that moms nag their kids about, dressing them up as some profound wisdom, mixing them up with conservative and religious bullshit.
Getting addicted to substances while moralizing over how other people are addicted, promoting another quack doctor with his experimental treatments, nearly dying from the said treatments. Denying his involvement with him, while continuing to virtue signal about how he is Not Like Other Addicts and how psych meds are all evil, actually, despite continuously using them against the doctor's advice (e.g, quitting cold turkey).
Then promoting wacky diets like the meat-only one, and attributing whatever health improvements they had to it. Only people I feel bad about in this situation are his grandkids. According to his daughter, her daughter got hospitalized literally on the same day as her dad. It's most definitely a result of this schizo conspirology lifestyle.

I still remember when Mikhaila Peterson gave her daughter a slab of steak instead of cake for her birthday because she thinks that cake is somehow “immoral”.

Dr. Lindzen sure did use a whole lot of words just to say absolutely fucking nothing. vague gesturing at climate science topics without ever pointing to one single concrete instance of specific data that is verifiably wrong regarding modern climate science consensus. if he is truly as educated as he claims, then he knows for a fact what he just did is nothing more than vial shilling for capitalist forces that are destroying the biosphere for a profit. if hell was real, it would still be too mild of a consequence for these subhuman cretins
moschles@reddit
Lindzen is incredibly irresponsible here. He describes the permafrost thawing as a "feedback effect" and says the models include this. Then he derails the discussion into clouds ("water vapor increases and amplifies it"). Notice he does not define what the permafrost thaw would do, neither for Peterson or any audience watching it. This was a subject-switch, not a reply.
The release of CO2 by permafrost thaw is not just some "feedback" thing. When that begins to happen, humanity no longer has any control over CO2 emmissions, since the earth is now doing it independent of us.

TalkingCat910@reddit
I think it’s because of two reasons
The rise of fascism and war in various places takes up a lot of energy and concern among people that tend to care about the climate (ICE raids, stupid wars, genocides, in the U.S. loss of a functioning democracy to some extent as Congress does nothing). These are short term threats so they take up attention
I think the time for calls for individual action and awareness. Individual action was partly a grift by the companies that could make a difference to pass accountability and blame and partly desperation by people that wanted change. Awareness- pretty much everyone reasonable in the world knows something about it. In many countries it’s not enough to change what needs to be changed because you’d have to overhaul the entire economy more or less. It’s also clear to anyone paying attention that those kinds of calls to action should have happened at least 30 years ago if not more. It’s fruitless to say if you act now we can keep warming under 2 degrees when we can’t actually do that.

A smaller population consuming less resources is antithetical to the unsustainable need for perpetual growth in a late stage capitalistic system. Even if we could've convinced leaders and the population to switch to renewables, consume less, recycle etc. those are only measures that will slightly blunt the looming climate collapse. But, we can't even muster the will to make those nominal changes. Seeing that collective fecklessness I realized the only measure within my control was no to procreate.
GreyRobb@reddit
I spent decades trying to convince idiots about climate change. The damage is done, and humanity isn't going to change even in the face of annihilation.

a few things I would like more discussion on.
affects on climate of the poles flipping and continental drift .
PennysWorthOfTea@reddit
Well, there are events that, over hundreds of thousands--if not millions of years--can affect the global climate patterns however since this sub is specifically on human-scale changes, pole flipping & continental drift aren't exactly relevant here. In contrast, human-induced climate change is much more of an issue due to it's acute nature & ties to the human global industrial economy relative to other causes of climate change.
Hope this helps
rick-reads-reddit@reddit
I appreciate the time to answer. I dont think whatever were doing is helping the environment.
For me water shortages seemed far fetched to 20 years ago and here we are. seems like a good starting point would be some water innovation. grey water tanks and better ways to reuse it a time or 2. before ends up back in rivers. I dont understand data centers need for fresh water vs a radiator system or closed loop.
My opinion, more could be done regarding the automobile industry. Straight electric cars were too controversial and was too much of a change. Lets make smaller motors (think home generators) that power electric motors in vehicles. a generator will power your home for hours on 10 gallons of gas. Much like locomotive works, diesel over electric. If that same thought went into a car or truck you would probably be able to drive a truck 700 miles on 10 or 15 gallons. Currently for me to drive my truck that far im full when i leave home, stop midway to destination and then top off once I get to locatiin. This is for drives that take me around 11 hours. That would be a huge savings. Going from 50 or 60 gallons to 10.
Im down with solar, the new panels are looking impressive being able to generat from moonlight and others increasing efficiency. To he honest though, Im probably more interested as an off the grid/proper thing thing than environmental .
Back to my initial question. Many in this group are so caught up in the doom and gloom end of times is anyone asking the questions of how much is really us and how much is natural cycle. Imo we need to umderstand that to really know where to start fixing our part of the problem (over consumption of everything).
To be clear im not saying we shouldn't try and we dont have blame but i never see anyone on here talking about how much is really us, every thread i dive into its 100% humans at fault.

You know, when someone is going to cash a car, you go “hey… don’t”. Maybe you wave your arms. Maybe something.. but you try to stop them.

You loot the car for valuables and water.

Still-Improvement-32@reddit
Claiming that climate alarmism stopped is just another of thier lies.
funtongue@reddit
Oh, there are absolutely people who believe this. For example, heard the son of my across-the-street neighbor asking his dad while shoveling snow off the driveway how people think global warming is a thing with these huge snowfalls we’re having lately in the upper Ohio Valley.
They see something like snow and conflate it with cold climate, not realizing that winter storms require atmospheric moisture and instability, which is caused by warm, moist air invading normally cold air, which is caused by increased atmospheric energy, which is caused by a warming climate. But I digress.
As for the sudden silence of climate talk, this is true in the U.S., and one could argue it’s because people are concerned with more immediate concerns like how to keep a roof over their heads next month, or news outlets face retaliation for this sort of reporting, or funding for this kind of climate research has been largely eliminated.
Chill_Panda@reddit

MotanulScotishFold@reddit
One thing I also noticed beside the stopping of alarmism, have you noticed that government pushed for EV for the sake of environment and taxed diesel car as carbon tax.
Now since EV is more 'eco', they invented new form of taxes for EV, does that mean that the entire carbon tax was a BS reason to get more money?
Even if we ever achieve a perfect 100% regenerable car that from building from scratch will release 0 CO2, they will find a way to tax it for the sake of environment.
