Bananas are at 50 cents a pound. They were 11 cents a pound two years ago. That's an 80 percent increase.
ShoshiOpti@reddit
I think you need to go back to school buddy. That's a +450% increase

Soon as the war is over they'll be down 800%.
Same with Racoon Penis prices, which have frankly gone completely bonkers.

Funny because you also did bad math.

Idk where this slots in but Motorcycle tires are like $215-$230 each right now. Itās one of the most inflated items iāve come across in the last 5-6 years - no pun intended. A few years ago they were like $110 each.

Iām noticing more and more denial. People(probably bots and possibly shills) are insisting that everything is perfectly fine.
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
Iāve been seeing the opposite. Many people around me are becoming increasingly vocal about their concerns.
Iām having a lot of conversations about preparedness initiated by my colleagues, who know that I prep (but without knowing the extent.) Iāve been answering a lot of questions about savings and retirement planning from my younger coworkers, as well.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
I meant online. In the real world people are bit more concerned.
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
Oh, gotcha! I agree! And I also suspect heavy bot activity, trying very hard to push a āthis is fineā narrative.

I had one flipping out on me in another prepping sub because I mentioned that itās a good idea to have extra otc meds around. litreofstarlight@reddit
Someone in a prepping sub got mad at you for that? Were they lost or something?

Yep. There was a BBC article that got no online traction about the interruption to fertiliser due to the war in Iran, and how it could cost up to 10 billion meals a week globally.
HIMBO-Art@reddit
People dont care about that because, like with most disasters, those missed meals and consequences of this shit will be felt the hardest by most impoverished. Expensive food in the US will probably just mean starvation in less lucky corners of the world.
Not that the suffering that poor people in the states will feel is any less valid, I just think theres an inherent knowledge of not getting hit as hard by this (for now)
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
Thereāll be some starvation here too. There are part of the US that are at 3rd world level poverty.
Any_Needleworker_273@reddit
There's been a number of intl. outlets online raising a fairly solid alarm regarding the very real long ranging impact on the global food supplies due to this war.

I work in a public school in an extremely wealthy NJ suburb. We had spring break Easter week. The week after, several kids were out all week. When they came back the following week, they told us they were out because "traveling was too expensive Easter week, so we went away last week." These are people who typically do not have to pinch pennies. At all. The parents all work for Big Companies in NYC. I've worked in this district for 25+ years, and I have never before heard of the families in this town taking economical vacations.
NotDinahShore@reddit
I am fortunate to have done well in my career, and we live in a very upscale town on the outskirts of Los Angeles county.
Have had the same core friends group for almost 20 years. All affluent and secure.
Our conversations never touched on finances/cost of living, until around two years ago. Now, thatās about half of our conversations. And all of us are planning our moves out of California in the next 2-3 years.

FaerieKnotz@reddit
Forget the faraday, fill those cans with weeds and (rain) water, and let them sit for fertilizer
Separate_Fold5168@reddit
I read this as "weed" and then got pretty confused with the rest of the sentence.
But hypothetically you could put your electronics in ziplock bags and submerge them in your weeds soup fertilizer cans. Double duty.
2quickdraw@reddit
I hope it's okay to post this, just a note to everybody check every price of every item you put in your shopping cart at any store, and then watch it being rung up and then double check your receipt if there are any sale items or coupons.
I was just in a local Save Mart where I had to put sweet potatoes back because it would have cost me $9 for two (that's why I have slips on my kitchen counter ready to be potted up and then planted in the garden when it's warm enough). We are on fixed incomes and have to watch what we purchase, and only partly why we have gardens year round.
The small avocados were on sale 50 cents apiece so I picked up eight. There was no other printing on the sign but I was actually told there was fine print underneath the sign holder, so it was covered up and not visible. The 50 cents was ONLY if you clipped a coupon in your APP. So instead of paying $4 the charge was $12. Instead of 50 cents each my partner paid $1.50.
I asked for the receipt from that partner I have been trying to train for years to look at receipts (who wanted to know why š¤¦), and I looked at it. I wanted to make sure I got the sale price on the kettle chips. I did, but then I saw the price of the avocados and had to take it to the manager get my $8 back!
You should also be weighing your produce yourself if it's being sold by weight and not packaged, and making a mental note, or take a little notepad with you. I'm sure there are a lot of thumbs on scales.
I'll never forget something like a decade ago when I was buying some small bit of produce, maybe ginger, and it was just one piece and only about a buck worth, and it came out to like ten dollars, and if I hadn't been watching everything being rung up I wouldn't have caught it. When it was being weighed, the checker (who was an overweight short woman, and I don't know how she wasn't aware of this) had her giant boob on the scale. 𤯠I would imagine that she was overcharging people on produce thousands of dollars a day. I called her on it immediately, very nicely but still had to point out that you can't lean on the scale when you're weighing something. š¤¦š
SpacemanLost@reddit
Had this happen last night at a QFC (Kroger) - picked up flowers for my wife (special occasion). It had a nice price tag (not a sticker) on the vase for $30, rang up as $40 at self checkout. I was already moving my card to the contact scanner when I noticed the price on screen and yanked my arm away and called for assistance.
2quickdraw@reddit
Exactly. They aren't gouging us enough on the prices, so they are taking an extra pound of flesh with it.
SpacemanLost@reddit
I am bothered by the idea of the price tags or signs having a different prices than is in their POS (Point of Sale) system.
Digital Price Tags are in some stores and others are wanting to deploy them, but at least more people seem to be aware of what Dynamic Pricing is and are responding quite negatively to the tags and any store that tries it. The potential fu*kery an unscrupulous grocery store could do with them is really quite evil, though if discovered things would almost certainly get very ugly very fast.
Separate_Fold5168@reddit
If Congress had any balls and common sense they would ban it. But they are all in bed with that Citizens United money.
Honestly this would be my offer to the retailers:
You can ONLY have digital price tags if the customer is able to see on the digital display in real time what the past price history was (just like Amazon does with online items). The customer should be allowed to know if they are being "surge" priced. Everyone on an even information playing field.
2quickdraw@reddit
It's extremely evil and I hope stores that are employing it are boycotted.
HeavySigh14@reddit
Thereās a whole TikTok series of people going into stores, weighing their meats/fruits/vegetables and then reporting the store if their scales are off
2quickdraw@reddit
I've seen a lot of them. I have weighed my own produce, I have watched all my items be rung up, and then checked my receipts for over 50 years.

Disastrous_Crazy8049@reddit

Wait on stock market crash, airlines are failing / cancelling routes, wholesale transportation became too expensive. Not to mention the job loss. Yet, markets acting like there no abnormal shocks. I dont know if it is the algorithmic trading artifically keeping this sh!t up...but we are due a correction two years ago.
NotDinahShore@reddit
The stock market is not going to crash. Wall Street/Fed/Treasury learned the lessons of 2008 well. And the flood of 401k contributions flowing into passive mutual funds only undergirds the market further.
Only way the stock market crashes is if the treasury market crashes. That could happen for a couple of reasons. Absent that, the stock market is not crashing or even correcting.
Impossible_Range6953@reddit
Unlike 2008 with interest rates, the Fed has no control over energy prices and I dont see the US gov subsidizing gas prices. The impact on food prices cannot be mitigated. As more big names start failing, there will be no escaping the correction.

Disclaimer: Iām part of a prepper colony, nothing is built yet but weāre on the verge of securing land.
Moving away from gas generators and more into green energy and kinetic potential weight batteries. Weāre assuming 1 year into the Iran War that gas and diesel supply for the public will be a thing of the past. Weāre looking into how to brew our own biodiesel with a pine/pig farm already part of the group to keep heavy equipment useful in the long run.
Personally I have one 5gal jerrycan and just found out the other day that the spring operated release valve has corroded its hinge and no longer works as intendedā fortunately it still works manually. Just another personal problem while trying to prep for a 70+ person groupā¦
Ecliphon@reddit
oof. Sounds like a doomsday cult in the making. Be carefulĀ
ZixfromthaStix@reddit
Surprisingly the lead is taking the business legit route with the whole thing. Iām anticipating government not being able to account for rural areas and debt basically gets erased with servers unless banks can keep their own energy on without any gaps.
Community lead is creating a public trust and encouraging each family to have some sort of business or trade.
The goal is self sufficiency, but heās trying to keep everything legit and above board. So long as society is actually holding on anyways.
We were roommates in college less than a decade ago, honestly Iāll take my chances with a cult over some Hunger Games meets Elysium style dystopia. Him and our third roommate helped me with difficult programming classes and to blow off steam we were a 3-man bomber team in Planetside 2. I was our pilot with the most keyboard flight time, third roommate was our sniper on the main heavy cannon. Guy in charge of the survival group was our tail gunner and spotter, never ever saw him get butthurt even when Iād say āHang on lemme try something stupidā š Honestly if I canāt trust the guy who tolerated those moments with a smile, Iām screwed anyways.
Ecliphon@reddit
The financial sector is as, or more, information-stable than the government. So if thereās an extended power outage or EMP, itās not erasing the deep underground shielded ledgers.
If society collapses that far, you better have damn good security and trust every one of those 70 people.Ā
Good luck dude
ZixfromthaStix@reddit
If society collapses that far:
1. Whoās gonna enforce taxes and debt at the bank and government level? Not the police, theyāll be busy trying to keep the peace and direct traffic in major cities and towns with their own infrastructure.
2. The turnaround for repairing what has been lost in the past few years is a decade or more of active repair. If society breaks, the fix is a long way off, and the longer stuff breaks the more delicate systems break
3. If we canāt maintain power for ground control for space operations, or other countries with their own satellites, Kessler Syndrome is the exponential loss of satellite services as they crash into each other, eventually locking out orbit. No more Internet or reliable cell service at that point.
4. Cell towers have limited battery capability and with too many brown outs or being offline too long, they can become damaged in that process. No cell service means the next best method is⦠mail? Satellite phones until Kessler locks us in?
5. The ājust-in-timeā delivery system for groceries is already actively collapsing around the world and everything in this sub for the past half year (more for the farmers and nature experts) has been warning how hard it will be to come by food. Part of our colony approach is growing our own food ecosystem, something at a scale that enables people to work in the areas theyāre skilled in while having enough food and community support to thrive.
I mean this in the nicest way possible: if worst case happens, people who try to ride this out with family at home, without extensive 6+ month prep, will be at the mercy and charity of larger groups when itās time to try and find a place to secure food and safe housing⦠and that means the possibility of being turned away.
I prefer to secure my familyās safety by being part of the group from the get goā rather than hoping we can make it on our own. I canāt risk being turned away from wherever safety is, so I choose to make my own. I also know 20 people with guns and spears led by veterans will drastically outcompete the average bandit or thug. We also have a registered nurse part of the group, so thatās kinda nice to have for safetyā¦
Ecliphon@reddit
To touch on 1, 3, and 4:
The DoD can physically disconnect from the vulnerable civilian grid to run independently indefinitely. They run continuous "black start" exercises that simulate grid failures to test this.Ā DoD also treats its energy network as a core weapons platform, not an afterthought. They are well aware. The military will keep running no matter what, same for comms, massive warehouses of MREs, water, etc. They also run a massive network of microgrids (look up island mode) powered by renewables.
Regarding civilian energy infrastructure, the 2022 Duke Energy attack in NC was a wake up call and NERC mandated the nations power stationsĀ on the transmissions grid to be hardened in various ways. So a shooter canāt pull a 2022 with 40k out of power anymore. Just smaller isolated areas, but thatās also being worked on.
National Guard and any other agency that needs to fulfill needs of food, water, and extensive medical care will be there.Ā
And you can bet your ass the banks will be there lol

I've been pretty much doing this since last year, though this round of crazy did have me getting one more diesel can for our small tractor and plussing up our dry goods even more. I'm also feeling less crazy for buying 10 more fruit and berry trees/bushes over the winter.
splat-y-chila@reddit
I thought grafting trees would be easy, after watching seemingly all the youtube videos and getting some decent tools/supplies and having stuck back together broken tree branches from storms before. 14ish scions later, I can say that I'm a crappy level beginner grafter now. Not one of the first 6 have any business surviving and I think 1-2 actually survived. Definitely practice all the skills you think you'll be able to do when push comes to shove, and don't be one of those 'I have seeds for the apocalypse, and when it happens I'll definitely know how to garden' people, because 'fumble around and screw up everything miserably' is step 0 and not 'beginner'.
2quickdraw@reddit
Almost 40 years on and off and I am still learning and studying and practicing and wishing and hoping for the best. I've had steady year-round gardens for the last 6 years now in the same microclimate. The garden gets bigger every year. I have three separate spaces and I'm adding a small fourth space in some partial shade. I'm also stacking all my pots I can find into corners and nooks around my raised beds and tree pots, and even seeding my tree pots. It looks pretty, it grows food from my rabbits, and helps hold moisture for my trees as living mulch. I feel I'm really too old for all this work but I also don't feel like it is a good time to slow down.

As far as personal preparedness goes, weāve got 2 more highland cows lined up to buy. That will put us at where we believe our capacity is so we will be able to start selling cows next year.
We are also going in to growing season. The snow is almost gone! I plan to put away a lot more than we did last year although we still have saskatoons, tomatillos, brassica greens and a little bit of tomatoes. But we also werenāt eating exclusively from what we had put away.
We have had our first year of major spring flooding since we bought the property. Pond and dugout have majorly overflowed but drainage is all good and non-problematic so thatās great news!
NetflakesC@reddit
How are you storing your tomatillos and tomatoes?
Rheila@reddit
Right now just freezing whole since having a 3 and 5 year old isnāt leaving time for canning. I just take the tomatoes out and into a pot with about 1/2-1cup water so they donāt burn while they thaw out and then cook down into sauce when I need it. The tomatillos go on a tray with onions, garlic and jalapeno to get oven roasted then into the blender with some cilantro.
When I have time I can salsa, ketchup, roasted tomato basil soup, sauces, diced tomatoes, etc with the tomatoes and salsa verde with the tomatillos. I also love to halve cherry tomatoes and sprinkle with herbs then dehydrate. They are such a yummy snack. But even with canning I always freeze a bunch whole because they are easy enough to grab for chiliās, dal, sauces, etc and itās less effort than canning them first.
city_druid@reddit
How did you store saskatoons? Canned in syrup?
Rheila@reddit
Right now? Just in the freezer. I have a 3 & 5 year old and havenāt had time to do any canning though I do love canning and hoping that this year I can get back into it. I might try dehydrating some too, but Iām not sure how they will be texture wise. Iāve never grown them before we moved here. I froze about 20kg of them last year, and about 30kg the year before.

Thursday evening at close Samās Club gas was $3.99. Friday morning at opening it was $4.09. Regretted not stopping the night before. My daughter really regretted not going the day before when she paid $4.19 Friday afternoon.
Costco also went up 20Ā¢ from Thursday to Friday afternoon.

In Pittsburgh we went from $4.33/gal to $4.69 in a matter of hours 2 evenings ago.

This is an interesting one. Our trash service is from a national company, WM. Recently they installed cameras on all their trucks to monitor what is being dumped from the can into the truck. If you have recycling and put material in that is not recyclable it catches it. Trash or recycle, if the can is too full such that the lid does not lay flat it is recorded. You get one notice of violation for an infraction and then, if it happens again, a $5 fine on your next bill *per occurrence*.
I got caught in this only because I had a really tall item that kept my trash can lid popped open on one side, but the can itself was otherwise half full. It did not matter, I still received a courtesy warning violation notice email with a video of my can being emptied into the truck. I was rushing to get it out the morning of trash pickup and did not compact it, lesson learned.
What I find most interesting about this is, I walk my dog once, twice a day in our neighborhood, varying the route over several miles. I live in a well-off area, houses are not right on top of each other, there's a lot of original owners from the 70s, retirees from other states that pay cash for the houses, and most younger families are completely priced out of the houses (we were lucky to get our house when we did a decade ago, I could not afford it today). A lot of neighbors have started putting signs on their cans asking people to please not put their trash in their can because it it making it too full and they are being fines. Or, on recycle days, the signs will say please don't put non-recyclables in this can, it is being caught and I am being fined. Sometimes the cans that have had signs are not out when I walk in the evening but first thing the next morning the cans are out. It has made me not put out my can until first thing in the morning.
I find myself wondering if people are discontinuing their own trash service and just dumping stuff in others' bins. I saw one recycle bin that was full of wood, and the next week there was a sign about not dumping stuff in the bin.
One of my neighbors is an elderly man who gets home health care and whoever fills his recycle can is filling it with all sorts of trash items and also overfilling the garbage cans. I find myself wondering how many fines he has racked up and if he is even aware of it. I keep hoping to run into one of the aides so I can ask.

Gotta bust out the sawzall for yourself and the neighbor.

I've been teaching preschool a long time and next week is teacher appreciation week. I find it's a good read on the economy and how financially secure people in my community are feeling.
Generally families are quite generous. In addition to cards and small gifts I often get gift cards (Starbucks, Amazon, etc). Last year gifts were a little lower than average. This year I fully expect to receive just cards.
I should add I am very grateful for the cards and I've kept a good many over the years.

Will do!
It's an interesting snapshot of the community because my class is a mix of private pay and state subsidised students.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I will look for your comment next week.

Monthly Samās run this morning. Doing our usual pickup. There is no one else picking up⦠on a Saturday morningā¦.
MindFluffy5906@reddit
I was the only one there this morning as well! Normally, the pick up spots have a small traffic jam on a Saturday morning.
AirborneGeek@reddit
Ooo, interesting. We get Sam's pickups on a lot of Thursdays, and yeah, that seems like a decent indicator of...stuff (did not do one this week). Read your post aloud to her and she looked in the app and our store (Middle TN) has zero pickup slots available all day today but tomorrow almost everything is available.
We don't have a /real/ good handle on what it usually looks like on the weekend, but a whole day slammed like today for day-of pickup is a little on the "odd" side of things.

Thatās when I bought my first house. Shortly after closing on it, the value dropped 20%. Took until just before COVID to recoup its value, then doubled over what I paid for it during COVID. The housing market is nuts!
And thatās not to mention all the people who are now essentially locked into homes they will never sell because we wonāt ever see such low interest rates ever again. Itās going to be a wild ride for sure.

Yesterday after work I hit the BP by the interstate, and they were out of regular and mid-grade gas. I filled up at another BP two miles away, but it made me wonder if gas shortages were coming. Since the Iran war started my spouse and I have been filling up at 3/4 of a tank instead of half, in case of shortages.
IllustriousShifter@reddit
Where are you at? Someone in Tampa Bay was reporting their gas stations running empty around them last night.
