The pilot opening reverse thrust at the gate like he’s in the 90s lol
YuriRosas@reddit
I believe that the structure is pushing the aircraft backwards.
Maruan-007@reddit
Not really
omega552003@reddit
I don't think modern engines provide actual reverse thrust. I think the C17 is the last plane to truly implement it.
mbleyle@reddit
wut
xxJohnxx@reddit
Possibly loss of braking - reversers are the only option to get you stopped. Well except running into a jetty of course…
CrossBamboAtTen@reddit
According to the A350 hydraulic system, the normal brakes are on the same system as the 2 reverser which we see open. They should have brakes. And if they didn’t you would just set the parking brake which has an accumulator.
stealthraccoon@reddit
Just curious why the pilot use reverser instead of waiting for a tow or something?
Is there a checklist or procedure for brake failure?
Ps: not a pilot.
Awesome_coder1203@reddit
Well if you’re already moving on the ground and you have no brakes, waiting for a tow is not exactly an option. How are you going to stop?
stealthraccoon@reddit
Engine off, roll until the plane stops?
Awesome_coder1203@reddit
It would take quite a while for it to stop.
Wingmaniac@reddit
The engines take time to spool down, and the plane has a LOT of momentum, it could roll for hundreds of feet.
xxJohnxx@reddit
Probably realized too late. Engines take time to spool down.
They would never pull into the gate if they knew their brakes wouldn’t work, so they could have been surprised by the sudden failure last second.
Alternative-Bee-3594@reddit
That’s a mad lad

Brake failure.
Using reverse thrust, but doesn't want to back up. So turn to idle, which will still produce around 20% of max. So you can choose idle reverse or idle forward...either pushing the plane with 20,000 ftlb. There is no neutral. Assuming single engine taxi, otherwise double it.
It will also take some time to spool down, looks like the pilots realized no breaks, went to reverse, didn't want to roll back into another airframe or kill someone walking behind so went back to idle hence hitting the bridge again.
Literally nothing they can do without risking life or damaging the aircraft and others.
wolftick@reddit
Seems like it would be handy to have a neutral thrust position on the reversers.
bohemian-soul-bakery@reddit
So - this was basically the best outcome.
Expensive but no one is hurt / died (theoretically)
CarminSanDiego@reddit
Is parking brake not a different function/mechanism?
bp4850@reddit
No, it uses the hydraulics, usually the same system as the alternate brakes (can't remember exactly for the A350).
-burnr-@reddit
What?
No airline driver is going to taxi anywhere near a stand without a marshaller and wing walkers.
Given the lack of any ground staff in the video, i would guess one of 2 things...
Or
How TF did you get 20 upvotes?
Also, it spelled 'brakes'.
I appreciate homophones are hard for non-english speakers
Initial-World1172@reddit
This is one of the reasons why passengers have to wear seatbelts until the plane is completely stationary, hopefully no fatalities reported on the plane and ground
TheKobayashiMoron@reddit
Pilot was just proving a point for the guy that took his off before the chime.
Gunpowderwigg@reddit
Looks fake, is the pilot an idiot?
carrickshairline@reddit
Brake failure.
Gunpowderwigg@reddit
Both green and yellow and accumulators failed?
carrickshairline@reddit
That is more likely than your claim of the pilot being "an idiot."
AussieDaz@reddit
Is it sped up? How does he reverse and drive back into it so quickly?
Awesome_coder1203@reddit
Most likely sped up
Muster_theRohirrim@reddit
Wow. Is this for real?

Noootmynormal@reddit
Wow it looked so fake in the video
Ruepic@reddit
Probably cause it’s sped up, and the fact they were using reverse thrust to stop.
Maruan-007@reddit
Yes it is (brake failure apparently)
Strict_Pipe_5485@reddit
Why the pilot didn't just slam on parking brake or get towed on bay baffles me.
Metallifan33@reddit
This isn’t necessarily a bad thought. Generally the parking brake is on a different system than normal braking. If both systems failed, they are in a world of hurt. But in a loss of braking scenario, pulling the parking brake is definitely a step.
Strict_Pipe_5485@reddit
Only 2 Hydraulic systems for the brakes, one for front wheels on each bogie, one for aft wheels on each bogie, emergency mode (park brake handle) bypasses the computers. Electrical issues should be isolated to each subsystem as the cabling runs a different route so one damaged wiring harness won't take out everything at once.
Hydraulics could easily be an issue but having 2x engine driven pumps on each engine offline along with both electric pumps offline is unlikely. I've seen hydraulic fuses popped but never more than one at a time and this would require 4 at once. Leaks would cause low hyd resivior causing low pressure but that's the job of the fuses to isolate.....
Failure logic follows that chances of having 4x computer failures plus 2x hydraulic system failures at the same time is exceptionally low.
Maruan-007@reddit
Well to early to ask this question but if it was actually a brake failure and lost all the brake systems you can’t slam the parking brake.
Strict_Pipe_5485@reddit
Yeah look I grant it's early with little info, but pretty much the only scenario where the brakes don't work is dual hydraulic failure which is not something you can ignore, the flight deck becomes VERY noisy.
At this point there's still hydraulic accumulators where you have 3-5 brake applications before the brakes run out, so either they took the risk hoping they had enough accumulator left knowing they had no hydraulics available or they had brake management computer failures in which case the park brake would have worked perfectly.
The architecture of the primary, alternate and emergency braking systems is designed to make this scenario expectionally hard to end up at and even if you do you stop.the aircraft somewhere ona. Taxiway....
Personally I would have expected they requested to be towed on bay if brakes weren't working.

Comes weeks after the door of an A350 was damaged - same airline.

that was china airlines (taiwan) not china eastern (mainland)

Yes but the video is sped up for sure.

In Attenborough’s voice
*restrained by her brakes, the mighty Airbus has had enough. She strikes fiercely at the aero bridge. Taking down her long needed prey not once. But using her impressive reverse thrust to strike at it again.*
*The other aerobridge looks on haplessly. It’s going going to be a long night at the gate.*
*The XWB has had its meal*
Puzzlehandle12@reddit
Nice! Very well written, did you use ai to polish the wording?

Alleged ecam messages indicating multiple break failures.
Awesome_coder1203@reddit
Interesting! Where can I see this? Do airlines publish their aircraft’s fault messages?
HeReddItNotMe@reddit
No they don’t. It’s accessed via SHM (airbus) or AHM (Boeing) through airline access
laforet@reddit
Yes, somebody from within the company leaked it on social media.
It was accompanied by another alleged message from dispatch informing the ground operations at SHA that they saw these indications from remote monitoring but thought it was a instrument error rather than actual brake failure, which might have factored into the decision by flight crew to not call for a tug after landing.
Strict_Pipe_5485@reddit
Wow ECAM would have been having a party, that should have been towed on bay for sure with customers on board. Brake resivior low pressure is a no go stop in place where I come from precicley because of the risk of what just happened.

LogExpert5281@reddit
I don’t know how you can blame brakes for this.
If I run over someone. Then back up a little bit. And then run over them a second time, can I blame brakes failure, too? (Asking for a friend 😝)
Migglle@reddit
Thats not how it works. Theres no neutral gear. You either go in reverse (idle reverse thrust), or you go forwards (idle thrust).
The pilot clearly put it in reverse to stop them from hitting the jet bridge, but didnt want to hit anything behind them, so put back in normal idle instead
