NEOGEO AES+ Announce Trailer

The most expensive and over the top game console of the early 90s is back and being sold at an affordable price.
Back in the day a single Neo Geo game cartridge would cost almost as much as a SEGA Genesis console. I only saw it on magazine ads as none of my friends was anywhere near wealthy enough to own one.

Hard to imagine using that controller in this day & age!

Some carts were in excess of $400 (not adjusted for inflation). Now I have an MVS in my basement and a bunch of carts I paid almost nothing for.

I had a neighbor that would occasionally rent one. I didn’t care for it.

I mean, if you had a passion for arcade perfect SNK fighters, it was worth every penny. Arcade perfect KOF was something to behold when you could sit and play it in your living room. Had a room mate who bought one used for some still crazy price. I think he owned maybe 3 - 4 games for it, I remember KOF '97 and Samurai Showdown. I think he also had Magician Lord and some really forgettable golf game. They came with the machine and he couldn't afford to buy any other games for it. Awesome though they were, yeah, I was happy enough with my Sega Saturn XD

I was deeply, deeply obsessed with Samurai Shodown II. Desperately wanted a Neo-Geo for the real experience. MSRP for the console was $650, but they were going for like $200 more than that because of scarcity. The game alone cost more than a SNES; together, they cost more than I made in a month.

My room mate at the time was obsessed with Neo Geo fighting games in general, so he would comb the want ads looking for a used one. When he found one, I think he paid, like, 500 for it and a handful of games. 500 was a LOT of money for a used console at the time x.x He only ever had the handful of games that came with it, he couldn't afford the 200+ per cartridge XD
He was trying to get one of the arcade cabinets, too, but that never quite panned out. I'm not sure where in our little apartment he thought he was gonna put it if he DID find one, but luckily we never had to address it XD

Saturn was superior kit anyway.

Saturn's version of Darkstalkers...

Yes Sir! Awesome ports of Street fighter Alpha series too!

I was embarrassingly good with Dan on Street Fighter Alpha. XD Saturn's fighting game ports were top notch.

I was a ryu/ken player. Dan was the character you used to humiliate someone.
Did you ever get into imports? Man if you got an action replay ram cart, Japan had some bangers we didn't get in the states. SF Zero 3, Vampire Savior (dark stalkers 3), Xmen vs SF series and if you were into shmps, so many to choose from.

I had KOF '95, '96, and '97 imports for my Saturn. They had an extra RAM cart that came with them and they were, for all intents and purposes, near arcade perfect. I also had Princess Crown, Silhouette Mirage, Dragon Force 2, Fighting Vipers, and I think all of the Dark Stalkers stuff. I had mostly whatever my local shop could get in ^_^

SNK made some great fighters as well. The Saturn was my favorite console of the 32but gen.

I loved my Saturn so much ^_^ I was so upset when Sega let it die =(

At the core, the NG is really just a supercharged Genesis. Better colors, same CPU, but faster, higher cartridge capacity, more on screen sprites and more sound channels. It can do sprite scaling, but I can't remember if it was actual hardware scaling or brute forced with software and CPU power. I'm sure someone will come along and disagree with that, but that's my take.
Waffuru@reddit
I still can't afford it. XD

Never saw one in the flesh until they became ‘vintage collectibles’.

The rich kids with the memory card for the arcade and home, and the smell of the food court.
