"A 36 year old man" was arrested and questioned. I'm sure this anonymous individual is terrified at the thought of his impending wrist slapping. I'm sure this time people will finally understand they can't keep getting away with doing things like this over, and over, and over.
ozExpatFIRE@reddit
It's interesting that you don't see such attacks in Muslim countries with Christian minorities but for some reason in the only democracy in the Middle East they are daily occurrences.
big_cock_lach@reddit
In Iraq, the Christian population fell from 1.2m in 2011 to 120k in 2024. In Syria, the Christian population fell from 1.5m to 300k over the same time period. Both nations have seen their population grow over this period (particularly Iraq which has grown massively), so it’s not due to a natural decline. The main cause for this mass exodus of Christians in these nations has been due to persecution and repression.
You don’t see such attacks in these countries, instead you see massacres and forced conversions. Israel might be a far cry from the utopia they present themselves to be, but that doesn’t mean Christians are safer in other countries in the region. Israel is a much safer country for Christians than other countries in the region.
Now let’s see the Iranian and Russian bots downvote en masse and resort to bad faith arguments for not repeating the propaganda they need to sell.
Odd-Woodpecker-4103@reddit
Fascinating how previously high christian populations in Iraq and Syria saw a dramatic decrease in the early 21st century. I wonder if something happened to cause that. Surely US and Israeli imperialism had nothing to do with it, though.
SpontaneousFlame@reddit
The US and Europe armed fundamentalist muslim terrorists to overthrow Assad. Who knew they would embark on murder sprees? (Oh, wait, anyone who spent 5 minutes talking to them…)
SpontaneousFlame@reddit
u/loggy_sci I can’tsee your response but if it’s the usual “Assad was a dictator who murdered his own people!” then I agree he was, but that doesn’t justify arming mass murderers and doesn’t explain why you have no problem with the dictators in Egypt, Jordan or the Gulf states. It seems that your objections vanish if the murderous dictator supports Israel...
loggy_sci@reddit
You shill for Russia constantly and then have something to say about “arming mass murderers”? Spare me.
SpontaneousFlame@reddit
When have I hailed for Russia? Pathetic.
MaestroRozen@reddit
Did US and Israel say to the Islamists "go, kill Christians"? Yes, they're to blame for arming these fundamentalists, but what followed is to blame on the backwards Islamism that makes the Dark Ages look like a futuristic utopia in comparison, and Islamism only. They did to their minorities what they always wanted to do - the only thing that changed is that now they had the means to do so. It's an equivalent ot arming, say, the KKK. They're xenophobic pieces of shit, weapons or no weapons, and the only thing thay changes is their capability to carry out their rotten ideology.
But of course, stupid brown people have no agency of their own, am I right? They're wholly incompetent of making their own decisions and only capable of being manipulated. Whenever an Islamist waste of oxygen does something, it's actually the West that is to blame.
Possible_Top4855@reddit
We should never be arming religious fundamentalists. They’re pretty much all the same, whether Christian, Jewish, or Muslim. American evangelical Christians are responsible for pushing for homosexuality to be punishable by death in several African nations. Israeli lawmakers support the use of rape against Palestinians in their custody. Fundamentalism has always been a problem among the religious, but by us arming them, they were able to grow their influence and gain more support for their cause. Oh, and let’s not pretend that the Jewish people in Israeli aren’t also xenophobic as fuck. These sentiments aren’t exactly new in Israel. It’s just that it’s finally getting attention. The only reason why Israel paused its ethnic cleansing in Gaza is because it got too much attention. Since then, Israel has continued the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank with the illegal displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank to make room for more Jewish only settlements.
Blarg_III@reddit
No, but they did bomb the Iraqi economy into the stone age, took over, detained huge numbers of Iraqi soldiers in the same camps they used to imprison islamic terrorists and then later fired almost the entire Iraqi army with no severance pay, releasing millions of radicalised armed and trained young men into an economy with no jobs and then acted surprised when the country devolved into a decades long civil war that killed millions of people and spread into neighbouring countries.
capt_fantastic@reddit
both iraq and syria were destabilized by the US and israel. the power vacuum was filled by militant sunni proxies who didn't just go after christians, in iraq they slaugtered shia, kurds, yazidi, et c. to then attempt to correlate the reduction of christians with islamic extremism without provide context is an attempt at whitewashing.
snarfy666@reddit
Are you just that ignorant or just a payed bot?
Christians have been attacked in the middle east for decades. In Iraq alone you are looking at over 1 million people displaced, enslaved or murdered.
The reason you don't hear about it is because no jews no news.
Tangata_Tunguska@reddit
Which countries do you mean? Many in the middle east have few Christians left in them
cambeiu@reddit
Egypt alone ahs between 8-9 million Christians.
One third of the Lebanese population is Christian.
meister2983@reddit
Now there's a very bad example of Christian-Muslim harmony
historicusXIII@reddit
Also "one third", I remember it being 40% a decade ago.
Tangata_Tunguska@reddit
I think you might just be assuming because you don't hear about it on reddit, that it doesn't happen:

thebolts@reddit
You think it happens at the same rate in Israel?
Tangata_Tunguska@reddit
I think persecution of Christians happens vastly more outside Israel, it just isn't reported on

And yet Christian villages are being targeted by settlers within Palestine, bombed and wiped out in Gaza and Lebanon.

Egypt, Lebanon and Syria have sizeable Christian populations.
The_Aim_Was_Song@reddit
You do know that Copts in Egypt are regularly murdered in Islamist violence, right? In Nigeria, Islamist militias are conducting large-scale massacres against civilians from the Christian minority. It remains to be seen whether al-Sharaa's "cuddly Islamist" government in Syria will protect Melkites and Assyrians in the futute, but historically they haven't fared well as a minority at the hands of their neighbours.
When you're making this sort of categorical, falsifiable claim, it would make sense to do even the barest diligence to make sure that it's not, well, false. Seems better to ground one's opinions on actual facts rather than one's hatreds and, well, vibes.
bimbosoupqueen@reddit
“Despite the spike in anti-Christian attacks, the Christian community is not one of the predominant targets of political violence in Nigeria. While Christians make up roughly 50% of the population, violence in which Christians have been specifically targeted in relation to their religious identity accounts for only 5% of reported civilian targeting events.”
This is per ACLED. The narrative about Nigeria murdering Christians is from Trump and being spread by Fox News. It completely ignores the scope of the violence and the driving forces behind it.
Simple_Map_1852@reddit
So? Attacks on Christians is not one of the predominant targets of political violence in Israel either. What's you point?
bimbosoupqueen@reddit
Did I say anything about Israel?
The_Aim_Was_Song@reddit
Oh wonderful.
Islamist violence against Christians in Nigeria is dwarfed by even larger-scale violence of other types. Your pointing that out occludes the fact that it's happening at a far higher rate than Israel, which was the comparison being made.
But I'll draw your attention back to the word-for-word claim:
Nigeria, being a Christian-minority country with a Muslim majority, shows that clearly-stated claim to be clearly untrue. As does Egypt, Syria, &c.
I couldn't care less what Fox News says, and Trump is as feckless as they come. I'm a Canadian who straddles the line between "social democrat" and "democratic socialist," and neither Trump nor Fox News are sources that I consider relevant or reliable.
Unfortunately for the "you don't see such attacks" claim, there are plenty of actual reliable sources to tidily show that the assertion was a lie.
bimbosoupqueen@reddit
The violence in Nigeria is horrific. Millions are displaced. Your attempt to paint it as Islamist violence against Christians in order to make it fit your narrative is disgusting. You clearly don’t actually give a shit about what’s happening to the people there. Take some time to learn about the ongoing violence before you warp real peoples’ suffering into an attempt to defend the genocidal state of Israel.
> Nigeria, being a Christian-minority country with a Muslim majority
Christians make up roughly 50% of the population… do you understand math?
tmfink10@reddit
Is pointing out that this isn't a problem exclusive to Israel really defending them? I don't think saying "this is a bad guy, and there are other bad guys" is the same as saying "this guy isn't so bad". Why does a problem have to be exclusive to Israel to be considered a problem?
protonpack@reddit
Why does it have to happen anywhere else in the world before you give a shit? Stop pretending to have consistent values.
tmfink10@reddit
I'm brand new to this conversation. I'm not sure what you think you know about my values or the consistency of them. Frankly, this doesn't even rank in the top 10 of things I'm concerned about, I just don't like logical fallacies.
protonpack@reddit
I just realized how funny this quote is:
Do you think comparisons with sectarian violence in Nigeria are something a citizen should be proud of? That's almost like an American bragging about having better access to healthcare than Libya.
protonpack@reddit
I don't think pointing to a country with worse living conditions and more violence overall really shows much of anything. What conclusions are we supposed to gather from this comparison to violence in a moral state like Israel?
SamuelClemmens@reddit
Ya, I get you want this to be an "Israel bad" post, and are pivoting to "Trump bad"
But its basic verifiable fact that religious minorities do not do well in devoutly religious nations.
Even Malaysia routinely has the police disappear Christians.
bimbosoupqueen@reddit
I didn’t say anything “bad” about Israel or Trump. It’s true that Israel is committing a genocide. It’s true that Trump and certain conservative media outlets have spread this Christian persecution narrative. My comments were about the purposeful mischaracterization of a conflict in Nigeria that many in the West are ignoring or don’t care enough about to understand.
I do agree with your sentiment about the dangers of being a religious minority in devoutly religious nations. Egypt and Syria are better examples of this.
ParadoxPosadist@reddit
I honesty think even if al-Sharaa actually wants to have all the ethnic and religious groups get along convincing his coalition to follow along is going to be incredibly difficult. The Syrian Civil War had so many factions that getting everyone on the same page seems unlikely.
Paradoxjjw@reddit
"Regularly murdered" and it shows less than 1 incident per year since 2018 with less than 1 average death per incident.
The_Aim_Was_Song@reddit
I can hear the sound of goalposts scraping.
That was an interesting exercise in weasel-wording to compare two vastly different levels of violence in order to invert how they actually compare. "Murders" and "violence" are two metrics that are so different that a careful reader can only assume you were conflating both terms to obscure rather than outline.
Yes, Israel has more violence than Egypt has murders. It also likely has fewer violent incidents against Christians compared, and it certainly has fewer murders than Nigeria. Once the comparison is apples-to-apples, your sleight-of-hand falls apart pretty quickly.
At any rate, the claim that I was responding to was "you don't see such attacks in Muslim countries with Christian minorities." That's demonstrably false to the point of intentional dishonesty, and the fact that you were upset by my correction tells any reader quite a bit about your motivations here.
Bobambu@reddit
Oh my god Canadian debate lords are are the worst.
Okay, how about this; Islam is actually a more progressive religion regarding its tenets about women than both Judaism and Christianity.
NS8821@reddit
You can’t be serious lol
LeftieTearsAreTasty@reddit
Lol how is allowing the use of women and children as war booty and sex slaves more progressive?
IRA didn't capture and sell English women in open markets like the ISIS did with yazidi women.
All Abrahamic religions are rubbish but Islam is the worst of them all
SuperKiller94@reddit
Using ISIS as an example when they are radical fundamentalists is pretty typical. Which Muslim country recognized by other countries has markets where you can purchase women?
LeftieTearsAreTasty@reddit
I compared fundamentalists to fundamentalists.
Also all Western countries have laws more progressive than Islamic sharia when it comes to women.
The op wanted to compare religions not controlled countries. Now you want to shift goal posts?
protonpack@reddit
So you acknowledge Israel is run by a fundamentalist party and you're here defending them.... Why?
LeftieTearsAreTasty@reddit
No one mentioned Israel anywhere, I compared the ISIS with IRA
So you acknowledge that you do not know how to read properly?
protonpack@reddit
Oh my lord, you come into a discussion about Israel only to say nobody was talking about Israel. You guys are getting less and less rational in your desperate arguments.
LeftieTearsAreTasty@reddit
I was replying to a comment about Islam and how it was most progressive for women. Context is a thing abdul
protonpack@reddit
Yeah you replied to a guy clearly interested in making a theological argument with some stupid deflection about ISIS. If the Westboro Baptist Church took over, could we judge Christianity by them?
If you're not the person to engage in a theological argument with that poster about the subject (I'm certainly not), don't pretend like you're trying to do anything more than waste people's time.
LeftieTearsAreTasty@reddit
Listen buddy, the Quran allows sex slaves and war booty because the prophet of Islam considered the perfect man ever took sex slaves and sold them. This is not a fringe belief.

thebolts@reddit
So just to be clear you think it’s ok for those settlers to mistreat and abuse Christians in Jerusalem? Is Israel actually doing anything to protect or prevent these kinds of attacks?

Czart@reddit

exegenes1s@reddit
Your source does not imply anything 'regular' about violence against christians in Egypt, with 5 incidents leading to 3 dead in the last five years. That's better than hate crime rates in the US.
SenuOfTheNile@reddit
I'm Egyptian and whatever you say is a horseshit. Egypt does not have ethnic minorities. "Copts" are a broad definition of the Christian population in Egypt. If you think is anywhere remotely close to what happens in Palestine and Jersualem to Christians and Muslims then you're simply delusional and misinformed.
And you'd probably deny there is any genocide in Palestine or apartheid actions done by the Israelis.
"Regularly murdered" damn you're horrifically dense.
IsNotPolitburo@reddit
They're not misinformed, they're a zionist.
somethingbrite@reddit
So you haven't been paying attention to the ongoing atrocities in Sudan then...
An_emperor_penguin@reddit
might be more revealing to ask; why did this random attack in Israel get posted and upvoted but none of the similar attacks in Muslim countries (or anywhere else in the world really)?
moonlandings@reddit
That has to be one of the most insanely uninformed things I’ve seen said on this sub in a while.
Azurmuth@reddit
Really?
Paradoxjjw@reddit
Yeah i'm sure a christian persecution fetish website is a reliable source that won't overexaggerate to an extreme degree. Just looking at a few of the things they mention in that article they consider a Christian being sentenced for any reason to actually be persecuted for their faith.
Azurmuth@reddit
There's also the BBC, the University of Birmingham, University of Notre Dame, Genocide watch warns of a risk of genocide against, among others, christians, in Egypt, Syria and Yemen.
Do you want more?
Paradoxjjw@reddit
I like how you moved the goalposts from "muslim countries" to "terrorist group opposed by every muslim country it operates in".
ojsage@reddit
But you do. Friend I hate to tell you but many of the world’s refugees that are Christian have fled from Muslim countries due to persecutions much more brutal than this.
Does that make this any less horrible? No. But I truly encourage you to try and not get into the mindset of “one is bad so the other must be good” any country ruled by a religious regime is going to be bad.
azure_beauty@reddit
Your ignorance is not evidence of anything sinister.
Check_Me_Out-Boss@reddit
What an absolutely crazy thing to say.

EternalAngst23@reddit
I can guarantee that if it was an Australian who pushed over a rabbi, the Israelis would be calling us every name under the sun. But when they harass nuns, or demolish Australian war graves, it’s “oops, we didn’t mean it.”

Prosthemadera@reddit
Pointing out hypocrisy has never done anything. The only thing that does anything is pushing for the change you want to see.
seiryuu-abi@reddit
Western media has always been partial to violence against Christians compared to other groups. This could be because their audience cares more about Christian victims than non-Christian victims. I mean you could tell in the headlines from how they described Palestinian vs Israeli deaths. Sometimes depending on the incident they can’t even find it in themselves to write that a Palestinian was killed in the headline.
Probably the biggest example of this bias was before the India-Pakistan airstrikes started they kept saying “gunmen opened fire” and completely removed that tourists were separated, lined up by their religion, and shot if they were identified as non-Muslims.
cambeiu@reddit
Just like how Europe and Canada were fine with US imperialism for decades, until the US kicked them out of the "whites only club" and started to treat them like as if they were brown people.

do i really have to do this? australia is a secular nation. israel is not. if anyone but a jewish person had stopped a jewish attacker assaulting the nun they probably would have been arrested.
only if viewed contextually as a standalone incident. however, the broader context shows there are hundreds of videos of Christians being persecuted by israelis. from the daily occurrence of spitting on Christians and churches, to the targeting of Churches in gaza by snipers, missiles and bulldozers. on the other hand, there are no videos of wide spread persecution of jews in australia, and certainly not prior to the genocide in gaza.
