Do you leave truck on while fueling?

Just seen a vid of someone saying they leave the truck on to keep the music going while fueling. I’ve been out here for bout a year always turned mines off because of habits is this normal lol.
LittLeSaucyHood3rd@reddit
LoL I Do, Always Have 😂🤷🏾♂️
Nyucka89@reddit
Laughing at yall working away at crappy megas. Slaving away for a crap bonus while those scolding you sit in HVAC offices for 10hrs, then get to go home.
I'm at work, trucks running. Hot/cold, it's running. Doesn't take but 10mins tops to refuel, so I'm not worrying about it unless I need to check under the hood
Osamabinsexi@reddit
All of these comments are odd. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone turn the truck off unless they were bullshitting around. Aka pretrip, checking something under the hood, getting a snack/drink, or all of the above plus a 30. I don’t go out to the NE but I’ve never even seen people in cali doing that
Rough-Method8876@reddit
As an O/O…I limit my idle times. Seems silly to save that $1.60 or so every time I stop for 15 minutes. But stopping 3-4 times a day that's $6 a day…and $1560 a year. Isn't much in terms of income. But it'll pay for half of my oil changes throughout the year (I change my oil every 12,000 miles). So it's worth it to me.
meizhong@reddit
And then $800 for a new starter. Maybe. I'm not sure how many starts you get out of a starter. If it last a year even with multiple starts a day (which it definitely would, probably a few years) then you're making the right call.
Mindes13@reddit
The fuel savings from turning the truck off when fueling or whenever will pay for several starters every year when it goes out in 5 years.
Rough-Method8876@reddit
Exactly!
Rough-Method8876@reddit
To be honest, unless I have problems with it…I normally ball park 3 years lifespan. I often replace parts on a calendar or mileage schedule rather than “it's broken…oh shit” schedule. So I try and replace a starter every three years (plus or minus a few months…im not as strict on these) Unless I have some weak batteries or a really really bad winter and the truck starts hard. Might wear the brush out earlier. Should still be worth it!
meizhong@reddit
That's a good plan. Although I can usually tell when a starter is beginning to fail. It doesn't work perfectly then just quit unless maybe the solenoid burns up. Last time one quit on me, it started slowly for 2 weeks. I told my boss, but if course he waited till I finally called him and told him it wouldn't start.
I own my own truck now, I'd be interested to know more about your schedule and what else you replace and when. Maybe post it if you have time.
Rough-Method8876@reddit
I'll absolutely either comment or post it!
Laffenor@reddit
I've never had a starter give out on me, and certainly not twice a year.
meizhong@reddit
I said it would probably last a few years.
Crowhop11@reddit
It’s as simple as most company drivers dgaf cuz it’s not their money lol. As an owner op, I absolutely don’t idle unless necessary.
redrhino606@reddit
Im a company driver. Always shut my truck off when fueling.
Thismechanictrucks@reddit
I agree that they were odd. I leave that sucker pumin and thumpin. I only shut it off if im not in eye view of the truck.
Azzacura@reddit
Always off when fueling, because there are laws against that and if something happens you'll be fucked
primmmel@reddit
Please show this “law”
Quelix_@reddit
There actually is. Someone posted it elsewhere in the comments. Usually when I'm getting fuel though, I've had my truck on for about 15 minutes total for the day. I'm not about to turn it back off, especially since the fuel injectors suck on my truck. They're so bad that the check engine light is on, but the mechanic won't fix it until the truck dies.
primmmel@reddit
NFPA 30A is a code that's adopted by several places, not a law. The most that can be enforced is idling laws or local laws/ordinances. Some states may have the law but Nothing federally controlled.
greedybanker3@reddit
so over here in rhome texas a guy did that. his truck started a regen. the fuel overflowed. and the entire fuel area 12 aisles burnt down. the cashier showed me the video. it was BAD. so no i dont leave any vehicle running when fueling because even though it is very safe the danger is burning everything while the gain is nothing.
BedAdministrative619@reddit
Did the truck running lead to the pump handle failing? I understand that a hot exhaust plus a fuel spill can lead to a bad time, but did it relate to the truck being on?
greedybanker3@reddit
yes it did relate to the truck being on. because the def system doesnt regen when the truck is off.
BedAdministrative619@reddit
I meant the fuel spill, the hot exhaust could have been caused by a regen right before the fueling process and would have still been pretty hot. I'm not sure of the exact temp of a regen versus the needed temp to ignite diesel, but I would blame the faulty pump handle and the inattentive driver before I blamed the truck being on.
greedybanker3@reddit
yeah and its your carpentry skill to blame for loosing a finger. the fact you were carving towards yourself instead of away had nothing to do with it. we turn the truck off for a reason.
Ninja-Storyteller@reddit
Team Driver with the other guy sleeping in the back? Truck stays on.
Solo? Truck turns off.
WHODUNNITT303@reddit
Idk how yall team drive, I can’t sleep with the truck shaking
Ninja-Storyteller@reddit
I was always fine sleeping on the interstates. Mostly straight with moderate curves.
But when you take exits, like truck stops or arriving at shipper/consignees? Those turns and stop/starts would wake me up.
Cardinal_350@reddit
Used to get a fuel bonus. Dropping $75 worth of fuel in the tank guaranteed my $400 fuel bonus
WHODUNNITT303@reddit
Smart man
SaltAndBitter@reddit
Only at 10°F or colder
TruckinTuba@reddit
Yes, but I also don't turn it off December-February
Natural_Elk541@reddit
I turn mine off because I get a fuel bonus if my idle time is below 40% and my fuel economy is over 7mpg for the month. I’ll get a $250 bonus this month
Shabibble@reddit
My company doesn't care about idle time but this quarter wants 9.14 mpg (we do full trailers)
_Aech_@reddit
Idle time under 40%?
My company just put out a warning that if our short idle time goes over 9%, they start disciplinary action up to termination after suspension or two. I'm usually in the 3-4% range so I'm not really worried about it. They also make an exception for "driver comfort" if temps are too high or low.
40% idle time seems really high to me though, to still get a bonus for.
John9250@reddit
You know normally I would talk shit about things like that, but with fuel prices being what they are, I really don’t blame them. That shits killing everyone’s bottom line even with discounts
bingius_@reddit
That sounds rough, I get dispatch errors that come to my building all the fucking time. Like an every day occurrence. And their errors usually involve telling their drivers the pick up is ready, when it’s being live loaded and it’s a far lane so it usually takes the whole day to finish the load. It’s bidded out as a 1am dispatch because we also tell them it will be live loaded all day.
They’ll still send someone 24 hours early because the contract expectation is a trailer to be loaded into before operations start. With how some of these megas jerk around third parties and then third parties jerk around drivers, it almost seems infeasible to me to expect an under 9% idle time.
Just because I’m already bitching, I’ve seen these fuckers send their drivers every single pickup number and not tell their driver where he’s going. And just expect him to figure out behind a 9 digit number which one is the Kansas, Portland, Orlando, Maryland, etc. Like some of these fuckers in dispatch have the planning skills of a toddler, let the god damn driver know where he’s going because I’m just going to pick the one I know I can cancel and let my drivers take.
Top-Rate1395@reddit
40%, I’ll get a call if I go above 12%
targetjohn@reddit
Mines around 56% right now. Doesn't help i was told to leave it running for almost a month straight due to the cold.
Jak_Nobody@reddit
Right? I just got talked to because my was at 16% for some reason, when I'm usually at like 7% or 8%...
mike-2129@reddit
Can you even hear the music with the truck running doors shut and people's reefer reefing? Sounds like they be obnoxious as fuck
John9250@reddit
Na I’m only there a few minutes anyway. I will at a terminal though. The shop guys like to come out and talk sometimes
Megalodon7770@reddit
When it’s-40 yes
Whitehoneybun666@reddit
Back when I was working for a mega I wouldn’t turn the truck off for nothing id even leave it idling while I showered
Robjla@reddit
For me, it depends most of the time I turn it off if I slept at it loves and I just started it and went to the fuel island. It’s below zero if it’s 110°. No
DepressedDragonBorn@reddit
Only when I was having battery issues and didn't want to risk the truck not turning back on.
Left the truck on an entire week until I got back to a terminal.
MostlyUseful@reddit
That makes sense. I’ve always told anyone that needed my help with a jump start to make sure they don’t turn it off again until they are at their shop.
MostlyUseful@reddit
I turn mine off at every opportunity because fuel is expensive af
Brilliant_Sound2596@reddit
I’ll leave it running if the outside temperature drops below 15F because I don’t want to deal with my fuel gelling-up. (But then, I’ll make a point of adding anti-gel to the fuel.)
Cheap_Speaker_5481@reddit
When you pay for your own fuel you learn to shut it off
bcsublime@reddit
I haven’t driven in years, but back when I did every truck was always on at the fuel island.
It doesn’t carry the same fire risk as normal gasoline
Ur_Fav_Step-Redditor@reddit
Only if it regens. Never let your truck regen at the pump, there’s a video of a fire starting like that. It’s not just diesel on the ground, there’s oil and more. And a lot of trucks have the exhaust pointed straight at the ground
bcsublime@reddit
Very great point.
Boring-Picture-7349@reddit
I was at 0.7 percent idle time last week. Use your apu.
mr-doctor2u@reddit
No never. My daily driver is also a Diesel and I don't turn that off either.
GabtsbyForaDay@reddit
Only to let the turbo spool down if i drove over 20 min. It’s best to let any turbo vehicle spool down. If short trips it only needs 30ish seconds but if you have been driving on the freeway for over 30 minutes you need to let it spool down on a scale up to 5 minutes if you have driven a couple of hours.
shadowmib@reddit
I used to leave it on because my bluetooth would disconnect if i turned off the engine but i got a new radio and it doesn't now
DukeBradford2@reddit
No
D-Gemini@reddit
I turn my truck off but it’s not for a big reason. It’s really just a habit. I have had to let a truck run while fueling but that was because the battery was low and I didn’t want to risk it not starting.
Mustang_man_351@reddit
Yes, almost always, im not gonna be there for long so why bother shutting it off
mblack1993@reddit
You dirty law breakers

Only if it's so cold, I'm worried about the truck not restarting.
MaxedT-H@reddit
Yep that's a fear of mines. It's happened to me before. If I'm using my card she's running until I get to my destination.
mattattack3212@reddit
As an owner op. definitely not
MrBigNorre@reddit
Why not? I’m getting my trucker license now and just wondering
asparagus_piss_jug@reddit
Price is diesel is all over the place. Idling can sick up a gallon a hour
Rough-Method8876@reddit
Yup
cwhite225@reddit
I shut mine off. It’s too loud and I’m already have slight hearing loss in my right ear.
Horchata415@reddit
No it’s always off when I fuel
MuphDiesel@reddit
No need to.
Donald_Trumpy@reddit
I leave it running usually. Company driver so I don’t pay for fuel and I’m always just trying to get fuel and haul ass out of there anyways
Great_Value91@reddit
I turn my truck and apu off, company policy plus we fuel in a building so it’s load as hell.
CaliThunder559@reddit
I shut it down. Only time I didnt is during training and trainer was asleep in the back so the air conditioning wouldn't cut off
Wheres_Jay@reddit
I haul fuel, and only turn my truck off to load. (Because the terminals won't allow us to leave them running.)
DecadentEx@reddit
If under 15 degrees yes. Otherwise, my truck is off.
Still, why would anyone want their music on while they fuel? Nobody else wants to hear it. Delusional people need to stop thinking everyone else is impressed by your playlist.
fakename010690@reddit
Yup. Normally im a loaded road train at 100 tonne. That engine is working hard and hot. By the time I let it idle down im almost finished. If im stopping for any longer than 10min I will shut it down.
xoutlawtrucker@reddit
Nobody wants to hear someone else's music no matter how good you think it is. Radio off, do whatever you want with your idle. On/off Its just white noise at this point, but bad music is just pollution.
zelgran@reddit
I'm in a team operation so I don't turn it off. The deafening announcements are bad enough, don't want the lack of air conditioning to wake up the guy in the bunk.
Ill-Year-3141@reddit
As an underpaid/overworked company driver, I leave my truck on most of the time... Meh, not my fuel bill.
Diesel isn't like gasoline, you're not going to blow your truck up, and 90% of the time it's either, oddly enough, very cold or very hot out, so either my heat or AC stays running.
azziptac@reddit
As O/O you always leave on. Especially during summer to prevent coolant hose expansion & turbocharger damage. By the time you're done fueling, if you arrive straight to the pump. You'll be back on the truck to pull foward. Max 5 minutes. 0 reason to turn off truck simple as that.
ZipTieTechnicianOne@reddit
I turn my truck on when I start, I turn it off at the end of the day. You don’t just turn off a diesel after running it hard. Like a horse it needs to be walked.
Laffenor@reddit
Yes, you do. This isn't 1972.
nerdariffic@reddit
Them turbos need a cool down before shut down.
Bandit359@reddit
Yeah I always idle the truck until the pyro drops under 300 degrees
DFA_Wildcat@reddit
At -40 it doesn't get shut off unless it's plugged in. I turned it off if it's above freezing. You would need to deliberately torch diesel to get it to burn when it's below freezing, no random spark would ever be able to start a fire.
tidyshark12@reddit
I always leave it running so the ac doesn't turn off for my co-driver
WW903@reddit
My truck stays on from the time I leave the house until I’m back. Turbo needs time to cool off before shutting down, and it usually doesn’t take me long enough fueling to give it adequate time. Besides, fuel island is the last place I’d like to be stranded when the starter goes bad.
RothonTalvanen@reddit
I leave it on until I go to sleep for the night if I can help it. Not giving the engine at least a good few minutes to cool off before shutting down is a great way to damage it.
valboots@reddit
I normally leave it running so it can cool down. In the time it takes you to fuel, you can park in a designated parking spot for your 30 and shut your truck off then.
UnKnown_Tree_Stump@reddit
I keep it off while fueling while on my own. If I am team driving I will keep it running while fueling just so the guy in the back can still have his HVAC controls and the idling of the truck is more soothing than a stopped truck. Just from my experience team driving.
Every_Intention269@reddit
I only shut it off when I remember to check the oil.
bmf1989@reddit
If the weather is nice I turn it off. If it’s cold or hot as hell I’m gonna keep the air/heat going.
madbillsfan@reddit
Only if the trailer leaks air after I turn it off. I try not to inconvenience the driver behind me.
HighwayStar71@reddit
If I'm in North Dakota or Saskatchewan in winter, and it's subarctic temperatures, I'm not shutting the engine off.
Safe_Fail_568@reddit
I turn it on when I first get in it and I don’t turn it off until I get back to the yard after a week
GumbysDonkey@reddit
only in winter when it's cold as fuck.
rico13331@reddit
For 5 yrs left mine on, then an old timer lectured me about it. Afterwards, I noticed everyone turned their truck off and so I followed suit. That was 15 yrs ago. Now no one has common courtesy. They all park in fuel lanes, throw their trash wherever, do 60 in the middle lane, etc. Gets worse every year.
tvieno@reddit
How unreliable are trucks today that they don't seem to start after being turned off? That seems to be everyone's reason to leave it idling while fueling.
RuneScape420Homie@reddit
Yes. Like pretty much always.
joepancakez@reddit
I say follow your dreams. I turn it off, but sometimes I leave it running if it was super hot or cold.
warwgn@reddit
I must be the only one who shuts my truck off while fueling.
The only time I leave it running is when it’s hot enough to need A/C when sleeping in the summer.
I even shut the truck off and only use the Espar bunk heater when it’s -35°C
SnooChipmunks6620@reddit
I've had it on when refuelling. No issues.
vanishing_point@reddit
I start the truck on Sunday morning, and it runs 24hrs a day until I get back to the yard on Friday morning.
juxt417@reddit
My Volvo starts running weird if I fuel up with the truck running, idk why
pianodude01@reddit
No, but only cuz i have 1 key and I gotta lock the doors before I go in and pay for fuel
Alecvinrvra@reddit
Leave your truck on you have any drivers I've seen stuck at the fuel Island for turning their truck off whether you're an owner operator or a company driver ultimately you'll be the one stuck there waiting for somebody to come turn your truck on or the hook to come drag you out that diesel engine is meant to run 24/7 and if your truck is on when you walk away it should be on when you walk back only turn it off where you're parked get a location that in the event it does not turn on you won't be in anybody's way and nobody be telling you to move your truck that doesn't run now all of a sudden
Niko120@reddit
I never turn mine off because I have to go back through all of the menus turning off all of the annoying safety features again every time it restarts
Dropnhook@reddit
Peterbilt?? I have to put in a code and hit a start up switch and go through 4 different prompts to get the hud clear. I understand this and I turn it off when I’m going to sit a while but that’s it on till back at the yard
librarydirective@reddit
Never.
coldafsteel@reddit
Most of the time no, shutdown when ever im not moving.
But, I do look at the turbine inlet temp and if it's high I let it idle for 5 min or so to cool down a bit.
anvilaries@reddit
Thats what the turbo timer is for. I have mine set for 4 mins and flick the horton on if the engine and exhaust temps are high. Bit excessive when empty, but swings and roundabouts
Snappypants9@reddit
wat?
FileCareless@reddit
Hell no keys with me at all times. It’s expensive and time consuming when you lock yourself out. I’ve done it enough times where I don’t chance it anymore but that’s just my opinion.
Wasabi-Kungpow@reddit
Mine shuts off after 5 minutes. I left it on once and when the truck shutdown it spit one of the fuel hoses out and made a mess. So I shuter down now unless im getting reefer then it stays on.
Responsible_Egg_3260@reddit

Yeah, if it’s like negative degrees outside, it’s just diesel. I actually just turned mine off though it’s not a big deal.

i used to leave my truck on when i was new and was driving long. now i always turn it off. nothings going to happen to my batteries/inverter if i leave the truck off for 10 mins to fuel up. even if my batteries do die, i have a 24v noco jumper so im good. long as u maintain ur truck ur good. btw some fuel stations actually have it posted that you gotta turn ur truck off before fueling.
red_dirt_ranger@reddit

NorthTxbourbon23@reddit
I believe that leaving it running can negatively impact the Evaporative emissions system (EVAP).

I turn mine off cause the fuel gage doesn't read properly when you leave it on while fueling.
disturbedrailroader@reddit
My truck stays on from the time I start my day until I go home. It could be 8-12 hours faster, it could be a few days later. The only exception is if I have to pull into a building, which is extremely rare considering train wheels at the places I deliver to are never stored inside.
