Fertiliser boss says war puts 10 billion meals a week at risk. - BBC

"The interruption to supplies of fertiliser and its key ingredients due to the war in Iran could cost up to ten billion meals a week and will hit poorest countries hardest, according to the boss of one of the world's biggest fertiliser producers.
Svein Tore Holsether, chief executive of Yara, told the BBC that hostilities in the Gulf, which have blocked shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, are jeopardising global food production."

This entire situation was totally avoidable.

Sorry had to cater to genocidal ethnostate Israel and their bat shit evangelical supporters

It's high time to get off the fossil fuel backed chemical fertilizer industry and back to focusing on fostering actually healthy soil that doesn't need chemical fertilizers, while also growing foods with much more nutritional content again.
Sunshine_Carly@reddit
That sounds nice but it won’t feed 8 billion. Or, to do it we need a lot more space, so, deforestation.
There_Are_No_Gods@reddit
Modern science would like a word. The myth that petro-chemical based farming is necessary to feed the world has been debunked.
It turns out that if you actually take care of your soil, the nutritional content of the food is about 30% higher, the yields are comparable, the crops are extremely more resilient to drought and flooding, and many more benefits.
If you want proof of this working at scale, I encourage you to look into Gabe Brown. He's a large scale farming that's been putting his money where his mouth is for many years.

More likely just switch to fertilizer made with renewable hydrogen

Yep, too bad a couple billion poor people have to die to get us there /s

But then people can eat the same food everywhere all year around.
Think of the industrial farming and fast food chains!!

It will be, they just don’t want to talk about it to “not scare the public”, just like with Covid, and for that the public who are not informed will be paying the price for it.
PossibleMicrophone@reddit
Blindsiding the public is a goal here. The fewer people prepared, the more people scared, ready to accept the next Hegelian proposal. The politicians of the world care more about Lucifer than the whole of us.
EldritchTouched@reddit
Elite panic is a bitch like that...
agent_flounder@reddit
And as always it will be the poor public that pays the highest price.
CosmogyralCollective@reddit
It's simply less visible than the immediate 'price at the pump went up'.
Ooutoout@reddit
It absolutely should be. When people go hungry they go looking for greener pastures. We should expect a lot of human migration in the next few years.
Lews_There_In@reddit (OP)
Crime is going to spike like crazy even in countries that won't suffer major shortages. People who can't afford to eat in better off countries will turn to crime to feed themselves.

It 100 percent will be. Africa, LATAM, SEA and Papau New Guinea will all see mass exoduses due to economic and food instability
India is okay for this planting season, but they are in the same boat more or less. They just have enough reserves until the next monsoon.

How many people did Stalin/Hitler/Mao kill? Trump might be trying to become king of that list too
Zxvasdfthrowaway@reddit
He already did, with the way he handled Covid. His first admin also 86ed the pandemic response plan or team that had been developed by previous admins. That was done before COVID was even a thing.
Autocorrect changed covid two different ways and then didn’t change anything the third time I typed it, weird.
GloriousDawn@reddit
That and the mask nonsense caused up to an additional 350,000 US deaths compared to what was expected in a rational response scenario. Trump 45 was already a decent mass murderer. Trump 47 is vying for a spot on the podium.

Because of the dismantling of USAid, researchers are predicting nearly 4 million people will lose their lives directly from that decision by the year 2035(give or take a year, I've can't remember the exact year off the top of my head).

For reference we are operating over the carrying capacity of food for humans by 45%. Nitrogen and Phosphorus have been pouring out into our waterways for decades. Eventually we are going to have to pay the tab.

How do we even rectify this? I could come up with a lot of solutions and I’m not that smart. Some of you here if you put your heads together, could come up with something workable.
But the problem is have the country probably more is too obsessed with sacrificing them themselves and their families for the benefit of these billionaires, which, for some reason they idolize.
How do we recover quickly from this insanity? I don’t think we do.
