Goodbye Converse/Vans š

57F: I have worn Converse and Vans for 50+ years, but now my aging feet need custom inserts (probably from wearing subject). I just recently found out that I have extremely high arches, which is hilarious considering Converse are flat hard skateboard shoes. For whatever reason, it never really bothered my feet all these years; I even wore bedazzled glitter Converse with a formal dress to a wedding last year (yes, it looked rad). Because of this I started thinking about wardrobe identity and how much it brings comfort. Most of my wardrobe could pass for that of an 80ās teenage boyā¦vintage concert Tshirts, hoodies, subject sneakersā¦etc. I am curious to know if any of you align your clothing with your true self - a visual representation of your personality?
THE_Lena@reddit
I have over 200 pairs of Chucks and yeah my feet no longer like them. I have now been wearing nothing but Birkenstocks.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
200!! What will you do with themā¦since you no longer wear them?
THE_Lena@reddit
Be sad about it. Lol

Never thought about inserts. And duh, ;) vans were a sk8ters shoe and cons are a hipsters/rockers shoe
Estef74@reddit
Chuck taylors were a low buck sketer shoe before hipsters were a thing(at least in my area). I remember buying chucks at Montgomery ward for $15 every couple months when I was a kid
Worldly_Olive_6484@reddit
Female, in my 60ās, still wear Vans. I buy the menās though because they fit better. Super comfortable shoes.
JustMeOttawa@reddit
Why not just put any orthotics into your converse or vans? I still wear both with custom orthotics. I have to size up like half a size so the inserts fit but still can wear them and do quite often.
Aggravating_Peach_94@reddit
I find that the vamp in chucks is too low for an orthotic.
JustMeOttawa@reddit
I think it depends on the orthotics, as mine fit and donāt feel too low.
qriousqestioner@reddit
If you try on one pair of classic, cork Birkenstocks you'll be amazed by the healing powers. I hated them with a passion until I worked retail and have never looked back. Cured my mom's shin-splints and I switch to them ASAP when my back or joints bother me because you can't believe how they adapt to your specific feet while instantly correcting your gait. I swear they're miraculous. I've aged into unflattering bare feet and even wear them with socks rather than look cool and be significantly less comfortable.
(Keep it simple--the Arizona sandal with two straps or the Boston mule/clog with an open heel. They now make lots of styles, some that try to pass for regular shoes, but I only know these two work. And you don't need a backstrap to keep the sandal on--the ridge under your small toes does this and supports your posture/gait at the same time. Step into genius-level comfort.)
Totally my shoes reflect my personality! My only chucks experience was purchased to last feet that had stopped growing and have me blisters.
I did Doc Martens in college for miles of daily walking across campus with flair and comfort; added Birkenstocks and Tevas for retail and nature hikes through gorges. I then moved up to Fluevogs for function and flair. Totally prioritized caring for the only pair of feet I will ever have and I'll spend good money on shoes that help. I'm fairly non-conformist and these all appeal to that part of my identity. You'll also never catch me waiting tables between more professional gigs without Dansko clogs popular with surgeons, chefs, and nurses.
I'll also choose a shoe shaped like a foot over a wing-tip every time. When I lived in a cold climate, I wore the heck out of contractor boots to office jobs that allowed jeans or khakis. I'll spend extra money on shoes and glasses every time. The rest of my fashion is boring and largely classic staples with a little more color than most men (used to) feel comfortable wearing, but my feet and my eyes need consistent quality that will last and keep me waking and seeing.
Honest-Western1042@reddit
You can buy Birk inserts too! Keep the chucks!!
Useful-Badger-4062@reddit
Birk inserts? And they can go in any shoe?
qriousqestioner@reddit
Yes. I had some and they were not Birks, but they were good.
Greasystools@reddit
I had Birkenstock inserts in my Doc Martinās to wait tables and it was brilliant for my knees
360Trees@reddit
I had no clue! Thank you for this.
pieohmi@reddit
I just commented about birks too. Got my first pair a year ago and it was life changing. Iām not over exaggerating either. My feet used to always hurt and now they hardly ever. Itās very freeing.
norfolkgarden@reddit
Birkenstock flip flops FTW.
THEY STOPPED MAKING THEM. sadness.
The Birkenstock sole is the only thing my feet are comfortable in. They take a while to get used to. Only wear them for an hour at a time for the first few weeks. Go up to a few hours for the next few weeks.
They are remodeling your feet to the shape your foot was always supposed to have. I am comfortable walking barefoot again.
OkSympathy9686@reddit
My shoulders n knees and hands n other stuff hurts all the time, but never my feet. Pretty sure itās the Birkenstocks I wear all the time
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I LOVE my Birks! Theyāre so old now that Iām embarrassed to reveal the footbed. š

I can sleep on my side but converse have been a No No for a long time now. Go for some cool Nikes and walk right past the New Balance. At least appease your child self by not wearing the old person shoes yet
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
Haha! The thought of buying NB or Sketchers terrifies me. š¤š»
Wind_Responsible@reddit
Iām not afraid to move forward in a fashionable way. New balance and sketchers arenāt that so itās a giant no from me lol. Nike or ASIC just feel better. Look better too.
giob1966@reddit
I'm nearly 60 and have flat feet, so it's Sketchers for me. I can live with it.
IMBD-Shadow@reddit
Me, too. My Hokas arch are too high for extended walking/wear, as are Birkenstocks (A few of the Tevas & knock offs are less high or just more squishy and I wore Keds I painted or bedazzled because Vans & Converse were too flat for my flat narrow foot :( I feel like Molly Ringwald & Ducky now, LOL Nike is my go-to with Sketchers next.

I am 50 and canāt seem to graduate from wearing jeans and funny/sarcastic t-shirts and hoodies. I wear Keens, Taos, and sometimes bright colored tennis shoes.

I havenāt worn any funny or sarcastic tshirts yet, but my most complimented shirt is a retro design of cats. Every time I wear it someone stops me.

Oh, I gotta look this one up. Like it very much
Pick-Up-Pennies@reddit
57F here, too; I got my first pair of Taos sandals, because I'm not doing Birkenstocks. I'm still... figuring it out.
Outrageous_Watch_583@reddit
Hey I kno exactly the dilema. Aging sucks for the back and feet! Everywhere really tho tbh. Anyhoo.. Im a die hard myself and one day i got stuck with my only shoes being these sandals and it was raining and cold outside. Well my best friend she said here use mine and she handed me some sneakers. I was like what the hell are these and she says oh God try them on. They're called rocket dog and you know what they're fantastic, nice and wide through the toe and good cushion. I love them. I have to admit
harpejjist@reddit
My prescription orthotics fit in my converse.

Love the visualization of the bedazzles and formal dress.
Someone made a snippy comment about me wearing Docs (freshly waxed and clean) with a suit at a wedding once. My reply was āwhy the f do you care?ā That was the end of the interaction. The groom had a fauxhawk, so not sure why anything else was in question.
MinusGovernment@reddit
I've worn cargo shorts, jerseys and sandals to the last 4 weddings I've been to (not counting step daughters that I was a part of so I had to dress up). I never heard 1 complaint. If there had been 1 it would've made its way through the grapevine somehow if I hadn't heard it myself, without a doubt.
Apprehensive_Judge_5@reddit
I wasn't a bridesmaid, but I wore Docs with a dress to attend a wedding.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I also wore them with rolled up acid wash 501ās and an AC/DC hoodie last week. Docs are both casual AND dressy! āļø
SillyNluv@reddit
Try compression socks with your supports before giving up. They make really cute beginner socks that have worked literal MAGIC for both my and my husbandās feet.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
Do you recommend a certain brand?
SillyNluv@reddit
I bought this brand for myself and two others. We all like them. The first link are low socks that I really didnāt think would help but they surprisingly make a difference.
https://a.co/d/0fN9K2vS
These are midcalf because I was worried about the socks pinching at my knee and I am so grateful because they do prevent much of the discomfort I was experiencing.
https://a.co/d/04Hu875n
And Iām including these because they have so many good reviews and more fun designs (I work with kids). Iāve got these on y list to buy next.

Good luck!

Youāre so kind to send links! Thank you! āļø

Dude. Chuck 70s are 50% more expensive, but last twice as long...and they have actual arch support! (Not cardboard and fuzzy soles so they can be imported as slippers)
saramole@reddit
I found HRT "solved" my horrible plantar fasciitis beyond what custom orthotics even did.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
HRT made me ravenous for 3 months. I gained 12 pounds.
MinusGovernment@reddit
I've been buying Skechers for about a decade and they always have a BOGO 1/2 off. I haven't bought a pair of shoes with laces in at least 15 years. My boots I wear when there's snow were a Christmas gift from my parents. Everything I've bought is slip-ons, sandals or slides.
Cargo shorts and tank tops or jerseys when it's warm and cargo sweats over the cargo shorts with a long sleeve shirt under a short sleeve shirt under a hoodie when it's cold.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I am currently rethinking my aversion to Sketchers. š
East-Garden-4557@reddit
Nithung has really changed for me. I wear jeans, sneakers, and tshirts( mostly band tees). In winter if I really have to I wear a sweatshirt or hoodie, but I don't like layering up if it isn't necessary.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I initially did not realize that Nithung was a typo for nothing, Googled it thinking you were recommending a brand of shoes. Welcome to menopause! š

It's been said I'm guessing, But Converse does make wide widths. I bet they'd be more accommodating to custom inserts.
ExtremeJujoo@reddit
I have to wear special orthos for my back/hip and I can insert them into my Chucks!! So donāt give up the hope!
Loud_Ad_4515@reddit
Not addressing your question, but this is about Converse quality.
I was never a huge Converse fan (too lazy for socks and laces, lol). But my daughter loved them. Their quality just wasn't there. Within a couple months the soles were coming apart, or the canvas tore, even with light wear because she wore so many pairs on rotation. I exercised the warranty, which they would only honor for shoes purchased directly from them. I just couldn't justify buying them anymore.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
They are absolutely NOT known for their quality. That is true. It does seem odd that they have such a cult following considering theyāre also not the most comfortable shoes (compared to running or Sketchers). I think itās more of a stylistic allure and connection to good memories.
Loud_Ad_4515@reddit
My daughter finally had to admit (at age 16) that they weren't great in quality or fit. The toe box is quite narrow, and always squeezed her toes, and she just has average feet.
But you're right - even when she was a toddler, she was wearing Converse or Converse-style sneakers, and it was a huge part of her fashion identity. She was sad to let it go.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
Btw, I adore those toddler Converse! I always think of buying a pair based on how cool they are. I even considered creating original pen artwork on them.
icrossedtheroad@reddit
I have two American made pair. I ran to buy a pair of Chucks in 2001 when I found out they would be made in China or wherever. After many years of use, they only just started to deteriorate where my big toe hit on the rubber. That was only about 6 years ago. Now all of the later ones separate on the sides between the rubber soles and the canvas. Sucks.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I still have one āmade in USAā pair from the late 90ās. Theyāre off white and have a giant hole in the toe box. I donāt wear them anymore.
icrossedtheroad@reddit
I have a pair of high tops from '87/'88. They are still in great shape as they are now a full size smaller than my feet. I can't describe them cause I'll out myself, but they are different that any I've ever seen.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
Out yourself as a Gen-X with spectacular taste?
icrossedtheroad@reddit
Yyyyaaaasss!!!!
CrumblinEmpire@reddit
Dude they make new Converse mid-tops that are thicker and have a way better sole. They are as comfortable as my Hokas and they are easy to put on.
fatrockstar@reddit
Those would be the Chuck Taylor High Street - I have two pair, padded ankle and heel support with better arch support than the classic style we remember.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
Are those the same as Chuck Taylor Malden Mid?
fatrockstar@reddit
They share the padded ankle, but the High Streets have a panel(?) that wraps around the heel to the top grommets, and is available in two-tone colors.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I saw those but only for men.
fatrockstar@reddit
I have two pair and I'm a woman - one in grey/grey and one in red/black. I have only ever seen chucks as unisex since they have both sizes on 'em. Seriously comfortable, but you'll have to try them on.
zjunk@reddit
Thereās also the Chuck 70ās - look just like the original, but have better insole and cushioning. Mine are a huge upgrade. Only way to tell the difference is the black tag with white writing instead of white with black at the base of the heel. https://www.converse.com/shop/p/chuck-70-canvas-unisex-high-top-shoe/162056MP.html
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I tried those on and they are definitely more comfortable than the original Chucks, but still not enough arch support for me.
thirtyone-charlie@reddit
I already gave in to the Sketchers
BigBaboonButt5@reddit
Me too. Just last week. I still canāt bring myself to wear them in front of my friends though!
thirtyone-charlie@reddit

thirtyone-charlie@reddit
Sketchers.

Converse has always been horrible. Vans has had "Ultra Cush" insoles for years now; get em.
notabadkid92@reddit
Thank you Vans! You didn't leave us behind
GrumpySnarf@reddit
Got plantar fasciitis at 30 and had to give a lot up. I still dress creatively. But with my custom orthotic insoles and knee brace.
ancientastronaut2@reddit
Same! I can't even walk barefoot in my house. I have a couple pairs of cloud slides for the cushioning that are my indoor only shoes.
RealtorRVACity@reddit
Yeah, nobody told us that you lose a lot of your foot padding as you age. I went from "Fred Flinstone" feet to these skinny bony ugly feet. Got rid of all my old leather shoes and switched to ON sneakers and Nike Recovery slides for the house, life changing! My "dress" shoes are Cole Haan with the Nike Air sole and leather tie up shoes by Doctor Scholls, yes that one.
ancientastronaut2@reddit
In addition to the plantar fasciitis, it seems like my feet are wider now too, like they've spead? Because a lot of my shoes that used to be comfortable hurt my feet now, like the second I put them on. Or I can't even get them on!
Val-E-Girl@reddit
Before you throw anything away, try swapping out footers to one with arch support. They may swap out seamlessly.
Next, check out Taos brand sneakers as an alternative. They have the flat sneaker vibe with amazing arch support. They arent cheap, but very comfortable.
BetteramongShepherds@reddit
Taos were my solution for replacing my Vans.
Double_Sweet_3404@reddit
I love my Taos!
mmmpeg@reddit
Yes, I had to get custom orthotics because of my really high arch.
BurdenedEmu@reddit
Just wore my Chucks to Sick New World and stood around on concrete for 12 hours. Oddly enough feet were fine but my hips took about 3 days to recover. Regardless, someone will be prying them from my cold, dead hands.
PlayfulLake2249@reddit
But how was the show? : )
BurdenedEmu@reddit
Awesome!! 1st time seeing Acid Bath and as usual Ministry stole the show. It got cold and very windy right before System played and we were dressed for "77 and sunny" (which it was during the day), so we dipped before they ended but we've seen them a ton and are going to round 2 in Ft. Worth in October so we figured "not worth freezing for." That did mean we were able to get back to our place easily without battling 80k other people for the monorail/a ride, though! Love that festival, always a great time!
PlayfulLake2249@reddit
Sounds great! I want to get there one of these years. I actually got to meet Serj from SOAD a few years ago at a book signing, he was so nice!!
Witty-Ad9507@reddit
If you get skate or premium vans the inserts come out and you can put your personal ones in. That is what my old feet need. And actually the insoles in the skate models work great for me. Don't give up on the best shoes ever, there is always a work around to keep us looking our best.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
They truly are bitchin shoes. When I see people my age wearing them their coolness factor skyrockets.
PeterPunksNip@reddit
I still fo, and always did. I am a punk / goth dude, and I always expressed it in my clothing style. I toned it down with the years, not by necessity but for practical reasons : goth clothes tend to be really fragile (lace, velvet, PVC.. ) and wouldn't want to crack my pleather pants in public and expose my tired ass š.
I always had very flat feet with pointy toes that were perfect for 80's winklepickers... but it's hard to find a pair now, so I wear my Docs or Vans.
GrumpySnarf@reddit
"wouldn't want to crack my pleather pants in public and expose my tired ass" the pain is real
Fit-Distribution2303@reddit
On the flip side converse are the only shoes I can wear. I stand all day at work and shoes with any kind of padding kill my feet.
But Chucks make my feet happy.
ElkIntelligent5474@reddit
I have high arches and a few years ago for the first time my feet started to ache. As I was tired of my double chin, I decided that if I could do nothing about the wrinkles, I could do something about the double chin and started losing weight. As a result, my feet no longer ached.

The only shoe I have almost given up on are docs. Theyāre still in the closet- just reserved for a very short night out - maybe once a year! Then I can wear the not-run-shit Birkenstocks.

Misc. Docs + Thotic insoles for me , and the same Birkenstocks Iāve had for 20 years now. I love seeing other docs in the wild and usually say something to others. Meanwhile Iāve got a pair of Doc Marten Vonda boots which are super comfy and they have a red rose embroidered on them. I canāt walk five feet when Iām out sometimes without someone commenting on how great they are. I also have their sandals too but they are heavy AF (super comfy though)

I owe Converse all stars man. In 8th grade, my mom had just dumped my alchy dad and left her with massive debt so we were DIRT poor. We couldn't even afford SHOES. Added tips: use two boxes if your hair is past shoulder length. Cover everything in the bathroom in plastic, like you're Dexter and you're about to commit a murder, because this stuff stains like a mofo. Shampoo every couple of days in cool water. Wear a shower cap or bonnet when you sleep for the first couple of days because there's a little transfer of color onto fabric, and I ruined about 117 pillowcases before I got smart.
Also, prepare yourself to be asked about your hair a lot, because it really is striking and it starts conversations lol

I havenāt worn my Vans in a while, and I have 2 entire hanging shoe racks full of them. Every color, solids and checkered. But I broke my foot in 3 places in 2024. 2 weeks before my daughterās wedding. I was in a walking boot, but I couldnāt wear the shoes that Iād originally planned because the uneven walking gate it gave me. I wore the boot and one Doc to her wedding. Thankfully my daughter was chill about that! Oof! But ever since the foot fiasco, I even have a hard time wearing Under Armor tennis shoes. I feel your pain literally. I'm dealing with planter fasciitis and flat feet from wearing crocs. I also have the ortho insert. As long as the shoe has removable inserts and good foot support we are good. I have allot of shoes that I have to get rid of because no outside foot support like your shoes. But that means new shoes! I have a shoe problem that probably stems from growing up with little money and wearing shoes until they fell apart one pair at a time. I will however recommend Vans Ultra Range. They are the companyās answer to competing with the running shoe world. I am mid 40ās and I work on my feet all day on a concrete floor and sometimes donāt walk around too much. The Ultra Range donāt require an insert like my regular Vans, theyāre lightweight and super comfortable. Worth the money.

High arches here too. It resulted in plantar fasciitis about 10 years ago so Iāve tried lots of shoes. Birkenstocks have been the answer for me but it took a lot of different brands before finally finding the right brand.

My Vans collection is my pride and joy - glad you found some tips so you can keep rocking your style!
PowdurdToast@reddit
I have really high arches that fall flat when I step, which has resulted in some pretty bad knee problems since my foot kinda turns inward with each step. And Iām supposed to wear stability support shoes for this, buuuuuttt I just CANNOT let go of my chucks. I know Iāll regret it in the future.
blackpony04@reddit
I have really high arches as well and can only wear the VANS with the special cushioning, and even then only for a few hours.
If you have a narrow foot, I highly recommend Salomon Speedcross trail runners. Totally off the wall as far as tenners go, but holy shit can I wear them all day anywhere, even on concrete. I have a concert to attend tomorrow and would love to wear my posh VANS, but they will destroy my feet. Those Salomons save me every single time. Again, a narrow foot is a must, but I am shocked at how good they fit. They also last over a year and I have been wearing them for over 10 years now with 3 active pairs (one is 2 year's ago's pair that are my yard work shoes).
BlakeMajik@reddit
I have multiple pairs of Vans but I don't wear them every day. I'd recommend trying other shoes with a bit more structure and save the Chucks and Vans for occasional situations, especially when you don't expect to be walking or on your feet a ton.
Sad-Corner-9972@reddit
I wouldnāt be working without prescription orthotics.
boulevardpaleale@reddit
56 here. Been in converse nearly my entire life. I have found that using the āOld Bonesā therapy insoles have seriously help keep these shoes comfortable. I just add them right over the ones that come with the shoes. Without them, the ādefaultā insoles will wear out way too quick and just start to hurt. I am rough on shoes. I go through a pair about every six months.
ThisWorldIsOnFire@reddit
I recently bought a new pair of converse and theyāre super comfy. I have high arches and walk on concrete floors at work AND they didnāt need any breaking in. No rubbing/blisters. Also Gen X and wouldnāt say itās part of my identity but that look so good with so much that I wear.
Public-Air-8995@reddit
Arch support is everything!Ā
nadiaco@reddit
I still wear docs and lots of boots and mostly black simple clothes, lots of gap and banna Republic thrifted. I have extremely high arches and just wear oTC orthotics. I walk about 2-6 miles 5 days a week just fine.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
You walk 2-6 miles in your orthopedics or docs?
nadiaco@reddit
In my docs or my sneakers. Depends on day.
Background_Dog927@reddit
Plug for good feet store orthotics. Not cheap and store are sparse put I can wear the thins or mediums with nearly any shoe. I can throw my orthotic right over the original insole , or pull it out if I need more room.
Shapoopadoopie@reddit
Not Chucks, but if you need a good arch support sandal look at the brand Strides. Some of the styles are actually pretty cool, it sounds like we have a similar tastes. I like the 'capri' that is a toe loop. I have a few black pairs that have held up forever. They work with my grunge band T shirts and jeans.
My feet hate flat flip flops and shoes, but these are heavenly on my feet.
I too put arch support in my Converse and that works as well.
Awkin-Sopwith@reddit
I was always about the Converse basketball shoes. Rocking a black pair of Converse Weapons high tops on the court was the height of cool as far as I was concerned.
CharmCity6022@reddit
I have several pairs of Chucks and I love them for their thick soles. However, I'm in my 50s and also have high arches so each pair has added arch supporting insoles. I wear these more than any other shoes I own.
Apprehensive_Judge_5@reddit
I've worn prescription orthotics in my shoes since junior high school and still wear Chucks and Docs.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I hope to find ones that fit soon.
theREAL_BalloonBoy09@reddit
I trade off with chucks and vans. When itās time for vans, I get my standard with Pop Cush. Itās like walking on a cloud.
RuggedLandscaper@reddit
I just bought 3 weeks ago a nice size 11 green vsn skateboard shoes. I call them my " street shoes". We know what good shoes are iut there. Ill be 87-95 wearing skateboard shoes. F the world!
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I love the green! š
Leading-Fly-4597@reddit
I wear my green pair at work! I've tried other shoes and I just can't move on.
godofthebasement@reddit
I gave up on Converse a long time ago. There are several factors: my size (190 lbs.), long history of foot pain, gout, and even the size of my feet (US 13). All together it makes the old school shoes hell on my feet. I wear work boots in the winter and stability running shoes when itās warm, both work fine for metal concerts all year round, just get them in black.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I just learned from this thread that both Converse and Vans have created new versions with lots of cushion and arch support. All of mine are mostly vintage old school or badly glued canvas with zero padding.
Tank-Pilot74@reddit
52m and still rock my vans and connies! Show me a better quality brand at that price⦠Iāll wait! Speaking of which, anyone else miss the OG stussy?! Iāve still got the utmost respect for the dude that started up that label.Ā
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
Unfortunately, I do not own one pair of Stussy-designed vans. š
katchoo1@reddit
I had to ditch my chucks in the 1990s. I inherited my fatherās terrible feet. Also very narrow heels so never could wear vans. You had a good long run OP!

Same. I still wear chucks but only when I donāt have a lot of walking to do.

Gotta see a podiatrist. I have flat feet, creating knee pain, so I had custom orthotics made. Theyāre made of super rigid plastic with a forced arch in them. Iāve had them going on 30 years now.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
Yes, thatās what I did. I know have $300 custom inserts that donāt fit in Converse.
Big_Earth_1010@reddit
Ortho Feet, same multi layered arch support insoles. Custom cut/trim as needed. The layers as needed too. $75/pair.
Choice_Student4910@reddit
Thatās great. Weird they donāt fit in Converse, maybe too wide?
Mine only go from heel to just past the arch and are as narrow as my feet. My brother, who had just become a podiatrist back then, made them for me.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
No, Converse are too low-profile and these inserts raise the height of your foot.
Choice_Student4910@reddit
Ah got it. Makes sense, your situation is exactly opposite of mine. I have low volume feet so I tend to wear low profile shoes.

Two weeks ago I stumbled in to a skate shop, and bought a new pair of Vans! They have the new PopCush insole, and are soooo comfortable! And theyāre way lighter than my other pairs.

deetman68@reddit
You are a rockstar for making it this far.
I had to ditch my Vans about 6 years ago (58 here). I still keep a couple pair of custom ones around for āonce in a whileā but they just absolutely KILL my feet. Iāve got a really wide foot also so inserts wonāt cut it for meāI tried. Womp Womp.

Break those customs out when you have people over the house for sofa-lounging wine parties. No walking required! Lol.

I wear compression socks and only compression socks. My collection is wide and extensive and the more garish the print the better - I save the real gross ones for work (last day in they were neon yellow with watermelons all over). Just grabbed up some that are made from some super bright, clashing colours fibre that I love.
Seeing as I line in jeans and polo at work and leggings and sloppy T-Shirt at home I figure I'll use my socks to show off my atrocious colour sense.

I got diagnosed with flat feet in the 90ās and went full in on Birks, ASICS, feeling for high arches in all the shoes I wanted to buy. Superfeet inserts in my work boots. Last fall I tried on some flat Addidas skate shoes. All the numbness in my feet started to diminish. It was sooooo awkward trying to walk in shoes without all those contours and aggressive supports. I wore court shoes in the 80ās and 90ās so I gave it time. After a month, I bought some NIKE court vision low shoes. Alternated for a month. The Addidas have slightly more padding than Chucks, but as the numbness faded, throbbing in my heels arrived. The Nike have the right balance for now. With the flatter shoes, Iāve been able to roll my ankles in and out as a stretching routine. Seems to help a lot. Weāll see where this leads. Wish I could wear Docās and Converse, but canāt. I did read that there is a better option than Docās though.
https://us.nps-solovair.com/
SadRepublic3392@reddit
Yep. A solid ASICS person here. Found the best Addidas a few mos the back for $55 and had to have them. Man did my hip hurt. Radiated down my leg. One day in my ASICS and I felt normal again. Now the Addidas wait for special days when the baggy, wide leg jeans come out to play.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I actually have the same numbness from shoving my high-arched feet into flat skate shoes. Solovair also manufactured Docs many years ago - they partnered. I donāt know if they still do.
JitteryTurtle@reddit
I donāt think Docs and Solovair are connected at all anymore.

I still wear Vans (almost exclusively). BUT! I only wear the "Skate"(formerly Pro) models. They have insoles with arch support and a heal cup.
I can't do the one's with a piece of canvas glued to thin rubber.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
Vans with arch support!? I will check those out. The first ever Vans store was about 2 blocks from my childhood home in Los Angeles.
JCo1968@reddit
Look for the shoes with "POPCUSH" insoles

Yep, pulled it out of a pair of slip-ons to take that picture.

I'm a 58M. I wear custom inserts. I just rip out the inserts already in them and replace.
I recently went to Sketchers slip-ons. They are the most comfortable shoes I ever put on my feet.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I would wear Sketchers if I could somehow hide the S on the side. I did actually try a pair on, and my god theyāre heaven. I just donāt care for how they look.
Infinite-Lychee-182@reddit
I can respect that!
I'm disabled with lots of stuff. Both of my feet are service connected, and I had to get my left big toe amputated last year. Now, it's all about comfort, lol. I have so much old people crap the Sketchers are the least of my issues, lol.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
Totally get that! Iām a veteran too (Desert Storm). It was the running in combat boots for miles and the shin splints that service connected everything.

I was laid off last spring due to organizational closure to happen in December. In October we had a goodbye gathering at a local pub. As it had been a habit of mine for 20+ years to dress up for Halloween, I went as 90s me. Dyed my hair orange, band shirt, plaid shirt tied around the waist, ripped jeans, Converse sneakers. Good thing I had a name tag that said āHi! Iām 90s me!ā because no one knew I was in Halloween attire. š
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)

emiliethestranger@reddit
I totally relate to this. My daily uniform is sneakers or Docs, leggings, and a t-shirt or hoodie and that will probably never change now that I don't have to wear heels to work every day. Still get dressed up for events from time to time, but am always happy to get home and tear off the stilettos. Chucks never fit my feet right but I love them for what they represent. They're so Gen X. I don't know if anyone saw Sofia Coppola's version of Marie Antoinette, but there's a scene where the camera pans over all these fancy period-specific slippers in velvet and silk and right smack in the middle is a pair of light-blue Chucks.
Chrissy086@reddit
I remember loving that movie at the cinema; the soundtrack was awesome.
justmyusername2820@reddit
I wore heels for years. Nothing crazy but 3 1/2 - 4 inch stilettos on the regular basis. Then I broke my leg and ankle and had to go to flats for a couple years, works my way back up to block heels with an ankle strap but now whenever I wear them I get terrible cramps in my feet and legs at night.
I was already upset that my shoes are limited to a certain style and now it seems Iām back to flats. I work in an office as a Director and like to dress the part. I donāt think flats look right with certain outfits - at least on me but somehow others can get away with it and it looks great
CApeaches@reddit
I switched to platform heels. Way more comfortable than stilletos. I canāt wear flats.
justmyusername2820@reddit

fredout1968@reddit
The Vans BMX slip-ons with the waffle soles have much higher arch supports. I have high arches and could never where Vans or Converse despite liking the look. My son turned me on to the BMX Pro line and they are super comfortable.
Capital_Pea@reddit
My feet are way too wide for converse as much as I love them. Theyāre almost too wide for the sketchers i wear even. Having wide feet really sucks when it comes to cool shoes.
SuspiciousChicken@reddit
You can get Converse in "wide"! They used to be more common, but now you pretty much have to order them direct.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
Several people in the thread recommended wide Converse, but I havenāt tried them so I donāt know how truly wide they are.

We live in the PNW so weāve both fully embraced jeans, flannels, and cowboy boots, along with the occasional Chelsea lug boot for me. I also have super cute gladiator wedge heels that I break out during the summer with jeans, but even then I usually just switch back to my chucks with jeans. And now Iām old enough to where I have the whole array: bell bottom, boot cut, and skinny. No I will NOT wear barrel mom jeans EVER, thank you very much. I (51f) have a bunch of fun, colorful converse/vans but I can't wear any of them. I have to use an afo and it doesn't work in those shoes.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I had to Google AFO. I can see why that would not work in Converse. Someone in the thread recommended buying Converse in wide; perhaps that would work?
Little-Jelly-8789@reddit
I doubt it. I have to wear a shoe 1 & 1/2 sizes bigger to fit the dang thing. It's not only wider, it's longer too. So while I could go buy 2 pairs of shoes to make one pair for me to wear, I have my shoe collection sitting there taunting me. I can't get up the courage to get rid of them, and I can't wear them.
Embarrassed_War_6779@reddit
I buy my Converse a size larger for my orthotics.
palabrajot@reddit
I can only wear my Vans for non-walking-intense errands, but I do love them for that! I will say, my constant house shoe companions are Haflinger clogs. I have high arches and bony, not-even-padded-on-the-bottom feet. They completely mold to your feet over time, and I swear they have eliminated some metatarsal pain I was getting (and had gotten a couple steroid shots for). Theyāve helped make my feet more tolerating to occasional Vans/flat shoe wear. My go-to walking shoe is now On Cloud Cloudmonsters. Amazing, and unlike any other shoe Iāve worn (better than other On Cloud models Iāve tried on, too)
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
My neighbor wears OC. I just canāt get past the huge bottoms, but I guess thatās what makes them so comfortable.

I wish I could wear Vans or Converse but for me they're too flat and heavy. Back in the day, I really liked that I could go to a Payless shoe store and buy the cutest shoes for real cheap even if they were murdering my feet. Now in my mid 50s, I wear shoes that are comfortable versus what I was wearing in my 20ās. I am not willing to deal with the pain anymore.
My favorite pick for shoes right now is my Dansko MaryJaneās. I have a red pair that gets compliments from all ages, and they don't stray far from the little black China MaryJaneās that I used to buy in the 80ās. I buy Hokas in bright colors for the gym, On Cloud shoes for work and Tevas for everything else.
Being older for me is understanding when to choose comfort over style without compromising longstanding fashion choices.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit (OP)
I would love comfort AND style. That seems to be a bit more difficult lately. I have a really cute pair of J41 Mary Janeās in red that I get compliments on all the time.
nevermeansoul@reddit
I too had a pair if J41 Maryjane's, they got lots of compliments and were super comfy. Spot on friend
spoodlat@reddit
I got the cutest pair of Mary Jane's from Sketchers of all places! And so freaking comfortable.
I have to dress up for work when we have clients come in.
Otherwise I wear my Converse, Vans or Bob's (Sketchers brand) I do have inserts for the Converse, and they have been a lifesaver.

Still rocking converse almost daily 57M. I still mostly wear classic chucks but I did order a pair of 70's that arrive tomorrow. A little more padding in them and they have a removable insole for those that need to swap it out. It will be interesting to compare the fit and comfort. Still dress much like I did as a kid. I wear Leviās, shorts, t-shirts - some silly, some band shirts, some solids. But now the jeans have a stretchy waist, less band shirts in rotation, more solids, and I traded my Reeboks for Hokaās with inserts, which are amazing for my feet. I never could do the flat shoes.
ZzzzzPopPopPop@reddit
Have you discovered the stretchy belt? In the golf section of your sporting goods store you should be able to find decent-looking belts that are pretty elastic, like the stretchy waist jeans they wonāt bite into your belly like a leather belt does
ddraig74@reddit
No! Good tip! I got me a really solid leather belt years ago. It was not cheap, but it has outlasted every single belt Iāve ever owned. But, I wouldnāt mind adding a stretchy belt or two to the wardrobe.

Same here. Grew up wearing Chucks and Vans. Can't do it anymore. Probably since I was 40-45. My feet can't handle the flat bottoms. The only shoe I found that works for me now is Reebok ZPrint. If you're getting custom insoles you can still wear the Vans. Just pull the original insole out of the shoes and put the custom in. I wear sketchers and do the same. Also, ask your doctor if you really need custom or just medical grade inserts (not Dr Scholls). I had custom due to Plantar Fasciitis, but even with insurance they were $120 a pair. My doctor advised me to use PowerStep insoles (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DFE3WDK) if I wasn't willing to pay for custom. They also have high arch insoles, but obviously talk to your doctor to make sure you get what you need.
