Why do so many people in the Balkans (and eastern Europe in general) think that women should prioritize family over career?

Probably because a career can't and won't care for you. Your boss will replace you, your colleagues will forget about you, and the corporate helltrain will carry on without you.
I feel pity for anyone that prioritizes their career over anything regardless of their gender.
tinmanjk@reddit
not being suicidal maybe?
Brbi2kCRO@reddit
As if taking artificial social norms will make one happier in life simply for having the generic choice in life
Brbi2kCRO@reddit
Someone “should” do smth is a dumb statement because it should be evaluated case by case rather than grouping a whole group of people whose whole life is evaluated based on… sex organ. It should be mutual agreement rather than a “should”.

In countries where men contribute little to the family, other than going to work, there is strong pressure for women to fill that void and prioritise family over career. Classic patriarchal thinking.
Some_General_3740@reddit
That was 30 years ago. I don't have a single friend that's now a dad and just goes to work.
trisul-108@reddit
And do they all think their wives need to give more priority to the family than to careers? Do they also do that themselves?
Hareholeowner@reddit
Because womens are slaves/s
Obvious-Desk4573@reddit
Couple of possible reasons:
Feminism was/is not as popular in the Balkans and Eastern Europe as it was/is in North America and Western Europe.
The Balkans have not yet fully experienced secularisation/de-Christianisation; Christianity and Islam emphase having children as the typical path to salvation.
The Balkans simply have kept their traditional (i.e. pre-1900) mindset moreso than Western Europe. A large aspect of that mindset is continuing the family bloodline, and you'll be looked at crazy by your own family if you say you do not want to have children, no matter the reason/s.
scanfash@reddit
And it will be better for it. Same people talking about not wanting kids will be the ones crying when the pension system stops functioning and no one has visited them in a year

Glad to see this sub isn't infested with people who unironically call most other people "breeders" and "crotch-goblins".

To expand on my point, although most people don't go to church or the mosque regularly, one of the few times most/all people will go is to get married.

Nothing more important than building a family.
crivycouriac@reddit
Ironically, the green countries have on average had higher fertility rates than the red one in recent years
tinmanjk@reddit
due to the subcultures their having the same beliefs as the Balkan people...........
onakos@reddit
There are for sure plenty of people in the "less infetile" part of Europe, who either fled during the balkan war e.g. to scandinavia or migrated later and contribute to some extent to the birt rates but I think there is an even more fertile "subculture".
E.g. somali women I kept seeing in Sweden had a shitton of kids orbiting them at all times and those ladies were all wrapped up in all sorts of upholsery.
It gave me the feeling that they are used as breeding machines that their men wouldn't even let dress they way they want.
Saying that the higher birthrates in those places have anything to do with the emancipation, empowerment, whatever of women is quite ridiculous. If anything it is the imported opression that keeps the numbers up.
maximhar@reddit
I see little correlation actually. France has a relatively high birth rate and is quite green. Spain has an abysmal birth rate and is also very green. Bulgaria also has a relatively high birth rate and is very red. Poland has a pretty low birth rate and is also quite red.
DeInking@reddit
That’s not true. Look at recent statics. Bulgaria has a fertility rate of 1,7-1,8 while Germany has a fertility hate of 1,3.
Defiant-Ad-8472@reddit
You forgot Immigration to these countries
holyrs90@reddit
That is simply not true, young ppl from red countries migrate to the green countries, lowering fertility rate of red countries and increasing that of green.
Some_General_3740@reddit
Cuz without women wanting kids, we'll cease to exist as a species. Only capitalism benefits from brainwashing people that work is good and kids are a burden. Twice the work force, same wages over 50 years.
Young_Owl99@reddit
Not only women, men should do it too but both also need to find money somewhere otherwise our population will keep decreasing
Lucifer_893@reddit
Career? Wtf is that? Almost nobody has careers anymore, this isn’t the 90s. Gone are the days of climbing the corporate ladder, increasing in income and status as you get older. We all work in bullshit dead-end jobs now.
voja-kostunica@reddit

Poglavnik_Majmuna01@reddit
Well we are currently living in a world where prioritisation of career over family is leading to an economic collapse of the west.
You’d have to be a moron not to believe that family comes first.
HoliAss5111@reddit
How do you handle taking care of your kids and working?
Poglavnik_Majmuna01@reddit
You don’t, which is the issue.
The first hurdle is reforming the economic system so that a single parent can actually provide for the whole family. Once that is achieved, the next hurdle is convincing women that family matters more than their careers.
floare_salbatica@reddit

ThatAnt8823@reddit
90% of jobs are completely useless soul sucking bullshit, you have to be mentally ill to think that a crap office job is more important and fulfilling in the long term than family or kids, and that goes for men and women.
Poglavnik_Majmuna01@reddit
You can be as disgusted as you want but at the end of the day our societies cannot function in the long term without enough children.
Everyone has the right to choose their own path in life, but it is obvious which one is selfish and which one is beneficial to society.
Emergency-Buddy-8582@reddit
What about all the people who raise freeloaders and even criminals?
TheRealPizvo@reddit
The question isn't "what's more beneficial to society" it's "why should we care about what's beneficial to a society that doesn't seem to care about people anyway".
If we cared about our society, we wouldn't be as corrupt and as blind to crime. We would practice our beliefs and principles, not use them to hit others on the head whit them while doing the opposite. We would work together to solve problems, not accuse one another while doing nothing. We would work on elevating all levels of society, not trow them under the bus for our small personal benefits.
There are many ways our society failed us, it's only fair we failed it back. All the talk about society and values and what's right is hollow rehearsed virtue signaling and purely performative in nature. A society with crumbling school and daycare systems, over indebted hospitals, barely functional social care, that turns a blind eye on domestic violence and celebrates criminals doesn't really care about the kids. We have a government that "endorses fertility politics" and then halts the National children's hospital indefinitely, cuts funding for disabled children, stops ordering meds for rare child diseases so their "partners" can steal public funds through the medical supply chain, fixes reconstruction projects in favor of their friends who then fumble construction on homes and schools, pretends heavy abuses in child centers doesn't exist etc. etc.
In short - fuck the society. If we were any good at it, would would survive. I'm not producing the next generation of taxpayers and working myself into an early grave so their kids can keep stealing my money.
Poglavnik_Majmuna01@reddit
I don’t think that screwing over ourselves and younger generations as a way of showing the middle finger to society is exactly an ideal philosophy. At the end of the day we will be the ones directly affected by the collapse of the welfare state and mass immigration from the third world.
Surely it’s better to reform society to create a future where people can both afford children and are willing to have children.
Sure the economy is a problem, but so is the rise of individualism that views children as a burden.
BeneficialAd8431@reddit
And convincing women is easy under his plan, so is making sure 1 single parent can sustain 1 family. The solution is easy, just ban women from working 😂😂😂
Poglavnik_Majmuna01@reddit
I never said it was easy, there is a reason why country on earth has been able to find the solution to the issue.
HoliAss5111@reddit
Sounds like you want someone else to take care of the work and you to just exist
Okramthegreat@reddit
Traditional values and not as influenced by Western Liberalism
faffy16@reddit
Traditional values and yet in the West it is far more common for women to have 4-5 kids and stay at home to raise them.
The Balkan woman works alongside her husband and has always done so, plus taking care of the house and the kids.
Traditional values here has usually meant you do double the work while he drinks rakia with his buddies.
From my group of friends growing up, a lot of us had our mums saddled with taking care of finances while our dads although present in the picture and not bad people were woefully inadequate when it comes to financial responsibilities and taking care of your family.
I see things are changing in recent years and yet I know a lot of millennial women in the above scenario.
Zinc-Roof_22@reddit
The title and content of the map post contradict each other.
Minskdhaka@reddit
If they don't, is there any chance of having a fertility rate of 2.1?
Elias_Sideris@reddit
I personally wouldn't use the word "should" when it comes to choices that impact one's personal life. Everyone is free to choose how they want to live. However, I keep women who prioritize growing a strong healthy family in high regard. Children are the future of this world and they're the best investment one can do. If children ain't for you, this is 100% respectable.
Happy-Hour88@reddit
In Bulgaria at least keast many women think they must find a husband and have a child to have their life in line. It's a badge of honour to say they like cooking and would be a trad wife. The sad thing is many guys really want such a wife. Another sad thing is most women want to marry a millionaire but have to settle for a 9 to 5 employee.
ExoticFortune2439@reddit
Portugal once again proving that it's part of the Balkans. 💪
DeInking@reddit
It’s kind of irrelevant because it means something completely different in different parts of Europe. In Germany only 33% agree but all the German women are choosing some poorly paid professions and working part time most of their life. In Bulgaria the majority agrees but part time work is basically non-existent and all the women are working full time.
RougeBasic100@reddit
Looks like the questionaire was answered by men. Women were too busy taking care of the kids, house and their career.
HamzaFire@reddit
🇸🇮I think they should prioritize family over career. So should men. I feel like if you want a family it should be a priority and career focusing on how to take care of your family best. I enjoy my job, but at the end of the day I do it for my family. Same mindset with my wife. She works part time gradualy going back to fulltime. She could advance at her job but instead we decided to have a family and ofcourse there were setbacks. Doesn't regret it one bit. If someone doesn't want kids I understand that completely. But if you want them then everything else is secondry.
Zrva_V3@reddit
Why should they not?
amazingamy19@reddit
Serbia is below average in terms of fertility rate in Europe, so i don’t know about this, also women are more educated, on average, than men.
Maybe it’s the truth, but the thing is, you are expected both to work, and have a job, as a woman in Serbia.
