Get Your Vaccines

Three years ago my husband had started this issue with his eye. Tears and snot lots of it and pain. Multiple trips to the er which they did numbing drops and he was fine and told to see an ophthalmologist.
Since it kept going away and the ophthalmologist was almost 2 hours away he never went. Today it flared up again and he saw my ophthalmologist which he found out takes his medical insurance not vision. He has shingles in his eye he refused the vaccine when asked. Get those vaccines.

I never had chickenpox despite being directly exposed so I might be immune but is it a good idea for me to get the vaccine at 53 now that it’s available? I know I can’t get shingles not having had chickenpox but wasn’t sure about the vaccine for CP at my age
Intrepid_Practice956@reddit
Talk to your doc...they can check for immunity to cpox. I was in a similar situation--very mild, 2 pox. They checked and I just went straight to the shingles vax.
canoe_yawl@reddit
Exactly. They can do a titer test for antibodies. I got mine done before getting the shingles vaccine, only to find I had no antibodies at all (either no exposure as a kid, or very mild exposure and no more antibodies present). I got the chicken pox vaccine instead, asap.
canoe_yawl@reddit
Literally just posted this in another thread: get your titer tests to make sure you still have immunity to various diseases from earlier vaccines, and to see if you have immunity acquired from illness.
I had my family doctor do a titer test a while back before getting the shingles vaccine, only to find that I had no antibodies to chicken pox. Apparently I had never had a case of it, or my immune response to that exposure was no longer there, so instead I got the chicken pox vaccine ASAP. You apparently really don't want to get it as an adult.

There is increasing evidence that shingles vaccine may have a role in preventing dementia
Mysterious-Agent-480@reddit
50% decrease in vascular dementia.
Personal_Secret_234@reddit
Really? Where are the studies?
How long have we had shingles vaccines?
Mysterious-Agent-480@reddit
Those sound like questions you can easily search. Give it a try.
TERRADUDE@reddit
I just received the second dose of my Shingrix this morning. As a kid I had an awful case of Chickenpox - a week in bed, high temp and lesions over 90%. I believe I had a mild case of shingles about 5 years ago during the dark covid times - no pain, just itchy. But I have heard that the single most effective thing to prevent dementia is the shingles vax. Get your vax.
SamePhotographs@reddit
Ive heard that the shingrix vaccine can help prevent Alzheimer's, but what's the mechanism? Does having shingles increase that risk? I take an absurd amount of gabapentin, due to Post Herpatic Neuralgia, and they say even a small amount of gabapentin can increase the risks of Alzheimer's.
Personal_Secret_234@reddit
Got off gabapentin after liver issues started such as liver failure. I was on 3000 mg a day .. not any more ..
SamePhotographs@reddit
How long did you take it prior?
I know someone who's going through issues likely due to gabapentin.
I'm at 2700mg daily, it's been 2 years at this dose, and I've taken it regularly for 7. This past week I've had incredible pain along my face, enough so that I'm watching for a rash to pop back up :(
banksy_h8r@reddit
I don't think this is known. Only correlation, but the study was based on a very wide population in the UK NHS based on an age cutoff so it's unlikely that it's any other factor.
TERRADUDE@reddit
They are still looking into the mechanism but the relationship has been demonstrated by the referenced study and since confirmed by multiple additional studies. Quite something.

Got my 2nd shingrix yesterday! For about 4 or 5 hours today I felt kind of achy and maybe the start of chills, took some Tylenol, and that was it. Same with the 1st. Feel fine now.
Starbreiz@reddit
I'd love to but despite having Shingles at age 35, insurance will won't cover the vax until I'm 50.
hordaak2@reddit
Just curious, how much is the vaccine?
Starbreiz@reddit
nearly $300 per dose and theres 2 doses.
My dr doesn't seem to think its too important but its just so dumb they wont cover it before 50 when our generation was getting shingles so early. I could've been saved from so much suffering, I still have nerve issues on my sides where it was.
hordaak2@reddit
Wow that aint cheap!!! Im surprised they dont give it to you as the care you'll need if you got it is probably alot more expensive!!!
Starbreiz@reddit
Yeah welcome to how stupid US Healthcare is.
Personal_Secret_234@reddit
Ditch uhc and get a different carrier!
Starbreiz@reddit
How would I do that? In the US, health insurance is tied to employment. I couldn't afford the plan on my own.
IKnowAllSeven@reddit
If you want the vaccine, still ask the pharmacist. I found out that my asthma counts as a pre existing condition, and because of that I can get the vaccine before age 50.
Being on ozempic counts as a pre existing too
Rimailkall@reddit
You're probably not at risk until then anyways, but you could ask the doctor how much it is out of pocket. I have no idea how much it is.
PudgyGroundhog@reddit
Do they make an exception if you have a prescription from your doctor? I would think past medical history would be a factor. I'm sorry you can't get it - our health care system is so broken.

I just lost my younger brother 2 months ago to Influenza A. He refused to get any vaccines. He wouldn't go to the doctor and just tried to treat it himself at home. He ended up overdosing on Benedryl and DM cough syrup, which killed him. I can't stress enough how important vaccines are!
Personal_Secret_234@reddit
I'm so sorry
Beegkitty@reddit

goaway432@reddit
Thanks. It was a completely unexpected shock. He was only 54.
CJK_Murph@reddit
Yep, my cousin almost lost his eye because of shingles! Terrifying. I got my round one vax as a fiftieth bday present to myself. Round two scheduled for June!
automator3000@reddit
Shingles in the eyes? Fuck me sideways.
My ex-wife had shingles when we were in our 20s. It sucked for her so bad, but of course us 20somethings still teased her for getting an old person’s disease.
Komaisnotsalty@reddit
If you've never had chickenpox, do you need to get it?
I know very little about it, but thought that if you're immune to chickenpox, you can't get shingles.
Is that true?
Pristine-Lawyer-3260@reddit
Get the damned vaccine!
Komaisnotsalty@reddit
Chill, bud. I had it quite awhile ago. I asked a question, not plot the downfall of the planet.
Pristine-Lawyer-3260@reddit
Dude, we just worry about you, that's all ... :)
Sweaty-Blacksmith572@reddit
When you get chicken pox, the symptoms go away, but the virus lives in you forever. (It’s called Varicella zoster virus, or VZV.) Shingles is just the chicken pox virus reactivating and causing symptoms again. So you are correct- if you’ve truly never been infected with the Varicella zoster virus, then you won’t have shingles. Can’t have a virus reactivate if the virus isn’t even in you!
However, you should still look into vaccination and talk to your doctor. It could be you did have chickenpox as a child; sometimes symptoms are mild or are mistaken for something else, or the illness was forgotten. Your doctor may want to test, and if it turns out you did have chickenpox, they will likely recommend that you get the shingles vaccine. But, if you really never had chickenpox, your doctor will likely recommend that you get the chickenpox vaccine, because you could get it as an adult, and the shingles vaccine, although it prevents reactivating of VZV in someone who already has it, will not prevent you from getting an initial infection of VZV. Or did you mean you already got the chickenpox vaccine, and that’s why you never caught the chickenpox? Is that what you meant when you referred to being “immune to chickenpox”?
Komaisnotsalty@reddit
What I meant:
I nwver got chickenpox as a kid, despite the good ole chickenpox parties of the '70s.
I have been vaccinated against shingles.
ChrisRiley_42@reddit
That doesn't mean you haven't been exposed to it. Just that the viral load didn't reach the threshold to become symptomatic. It's possible you weren't exposed, or that you were and never showed it.
wandernwade@reddit
I had chicken pox as a kid and got shingles in my 30’s. My kid got the chicken pox vaccine, and still got shingles!
loaves2121@reddit
So your child had shingles?
steelthumbs1@reddit
Adults can get the chickenpox if they didn’t have it as a child.
I got the shingles vaccine \~5 yrs ago. And, I never got CP as child.
lissabeth777@reddit
The opposite is true.. If you've ever gotten chicken pox, you are much more likely to contract shingles. But you should get the shingles vaccine anyways because shingles fucking sucks. And you don't just get it once, it lives in you forever and can come back at any time.
blueeyedaisy@reddit
I got shingles in my ear. Not a fun time. I have had shingles three times and am not convinced the shot is for me at this point.

SwissyRescue@reddit
Oh no, that’s so sad. I hope your mother is able to kick oxy and get her life back.
IpsaLasOlas@reddit
She never did. She died a user. For a woman who didn’t drink or use recreational drugs it was tragic.
SwissyRescue@reddit
I’m so sorry. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Final-Definition-512@reddit
Wow sorry to hear that. I got the vaccine last year as my mother also got shingles when I was younger and she said it was horrible.
ButterflyStock1791@reddit
I had shingles in my 30s, then again when I was 50. As soon as I recovered I got the single dose vaccine. Several years later I got a very mild case and decided I should get the double dose. I still occasionally get a little nerve pain but no outbreaks.
Correct_Security_742@reddit
I've always been curious about this because Shingles comes as a biproduct basically from having had Chicken pox as a kid. So, Shingles is like the adult second go around of Chicken pox. Which if you do have shingles, you can given Chicken pox to other adults and children who haven't had it during that time... Now, if you had Chicken pox as a child It lays dormant in our bodies as adults. I've always been Curious that a vaccine has been given as the answer. How can we vaccinate against that when It basically happens and confess up from within because of a weakened immune system. So that's it. I get what vaccines do, but it's usually too keep you from catching something. You dont catch Shingles, you basically just weaken enough for it to become active again in your body.
mettaCA@reddit
"Vaccines train the immune system to recognize and fight specific pathogens by mimicking an infection without causing the disease. They stimulate the production of antibodies and create memory cells, allowing the body to defend itself faster and more effectively against future exposures. This process builds long-term, protective immunity safely."
VanillaHuel@reddit
Having known people who had horrible shingles, I was waiting to get the vaccine as soon as possible. But there was a shortage! I was monitoring both the VA and CVS waiting to see who would get it first. And then I was prompt to get the second shot too. I had chicken pox at five and am NOT risking anything!
RHCP1031@reddit
No. Why do you think it’s ok to tell random strangers to “get their vaccines.” We have immune systems. The issue isn’t whether you get the vaccine or not, it’s how well you take care of yourself. Is your husband overweight or obese, does he have diabetes or any other co-morbidities?

CGS_Web_Designs@reddit
When I was 35 I got it, and I was in the best shape of my life at the time with the lowest stress levels I’ve ever had. Makes no difference. As soon as I turn 50 I’m getting the vaccine cuz I never wanna go through that again. You do you, but I hope everyone here ignores your advice.
Last_Pick_2169@reddit
Don’t wait. There is not a magic cutoff on your 50 bday. Trust me.
CGS_Web_Designs@reddit
I know that, but the 50th birthday IS an insurance thing so there's that. I'm not too worried because I'll be 50 in about 15 months and according to the research, I'm very low risk so I got 'boosted' having shingles at 30.
radioactivecat@reddit
Oh well, if hospitalization or death and not severe discomfort and potential permanent disability is your calculus, then by all means don’t get your fucking vaccine.

Getting the shingles and pneumonia vaccines were my gift to myself when I turned 50. Being a genx, I grew up with chicken pox "parties". So, yep, not gonna mess with either of those
mjh8212@reddit (OP)
We were just discussing those parties. When he got them as a kid the parents sent over their kids and it was the same with me. We think this is why our generation is getting shingles so much
Own_Celebration5462@reddit
True, but I get the rationale behind it back then. Getting it as children was a much easier experience than getting it as an adult. As it was endemic, it would likely happen sooner or later, so sooner seemed like a better idea.
Intrepid_Practice956@reddit
I remember being horribly disappointed when I had mild chicken pox and my grandparents (who I'd usually see about 4 times a year) couldn't stop in on their way home from Florida because my granddad hadn't had it, and it's worse as an adult. A friend had it in college and my husband had it as an adult too.

My two(!!) rounds of shingles were both on my face. I was 'lucky' that it chose to travel down the mandibular nerve branch, and not towards my eye.
Intrepid_Practice956@reddit
I think thats where it was on my grandma iirc. A high school friend had shingles in early high school (around one side of his ribcage. Seeing those scars--yikes.
OddSand7870@reddit
I got the vaccine after a buddy of mine got it in his eye. I said screw that!
notevenapro@reddit
Let me freaking scare you.
I got shingles a couple years ago and it was miserable. 6 weeks ago I got some face pain and then I got the signature shingles nerve pain shocks. Right side of face , hurts to even touch my hair. The pain migrated from my right, center to left and started its cycle again. Went away for two days and now its back. I am miserable.
Go to the doctor? Of course. I am in the medical field. I went to primary care and they prescribed me valtrex. No relief. Then I went to a neurologist and got three MRI scans of my brain. All good. Ophthalmologist. No shit in eyes. Good to go. ENT? Good to go.
400mg of motrin erases the pain for 7 hours then I get home and eat a 10mg gummy.
Get your vaccine.

I got my first shingle vaccine last year, but forgot to go in and get the second one. A few months ago I ended up with shingles. Thankfully it was a mild case, but still rather painful. A couple of days ago I went in and got the second vaccine. I almost got the pneumonia vaccine at the same time but decided to wait. The second shot kicked my ass for 2 days. But definitely worth it to help ward off future outbreaks.
RealtorRVACity@reddit
I did a Covid booster, pneumonia, RSV and flu, all in one session, no reaction just shot site pain. I was told by my RN friends that we ALL need to get measles/mumps boosters as well as MMR. Two friends had no coverage when they got tested so it would be a good idea to do so based on what I am hearing.
jaydrian@reddit
This is the first time I've had a reaction to a vaccine. Hopefully this is the last! I had asked about getting an mmr booster last year but the PA dismissed my concerns. I'm seeing someone new, so I'll bring it up with her when I go back for the pneumonia vaccine.
Dry_Particular_5162@reddit

fuzzybunnyslippers08@reddit
I feel a little bashful saying neither the first nor second shingles shots impacted me much. But I also took the covid shot at the same time as the second shot and that always makes me feel a little run down/feverish. Two days after the shot it was all good

I got shingles in my freaking ear at 43! Ugh 😩
I was “too young” to get the vaccine before that. Absolutely nightmare experience, and I’ve lost some hearing as a result.
Reddisuspendmeagain@reddit
I didn’t know you could get it in your ear.😳. I just read that you could get it in your eye too! I really thought it was only a skin rash. So glad that got the vaccine, I saw my sister suffer with it and the booster was killer, I can’t fathom having the actual disease
SamePhotographs@reddit
This is where mine started too. It felt like lightning bolts shooting out of my ear. It was absolutely awful. I spoke to a few health professionals about it, and because of my age, no one thought shingles. Even when the blisters started to appear. They all said dermatitis, as I was trying to resolve that blasted earache (heat and oil compresses..) after a few days, when the head ache wouldn't subside is when I sought treatment. Right at that cusp of is it too late to start treatment or not. Which could be why I'm still struggling with PHN. It's also no joke.
RUN_DMT_@reddit
It took me longer than it should’ve to get my diagnosis as well! You’d think they’d have realized by now that people under 50 can, and do, get shingles! I was in agonizing pain, I couldn’t turn my head, I was in literal tears. I finally went to a local urgent care right as the blistering started, and a young PA figured it out very quickly. Honestly, I was shocked to hear shingles too! Originally they thought it was something dental or related to my TMJ issues. Then after much googling, I was convinced I had mastoiditis (which usually affects little kids) because of the massive amounts of swelling and redness in my ear area. I was able to start acyclovir that day, dunno how much it helped, but I took it.
SamePhotographs@reddit
Yeah, the doc walked in the room and said you have shingles. I didn't even get to say much before that. The first script he wrote was for Dilaudid, which was funny to me, because I'm here to see you for a head ache...
The second time I got shingles - in the same place, I knew what it was. The first day, it was hot and sore. None of the shooting pains, though when I think back, I had complained of increased pain a day or two prior, from the PHN I was still suffering. I was also on a boat load of gabapentin, so what I'm actually feeling is very very muted. It still hurt like mad. I was in a foreign country, and knew I needed treatment.
I now carry a course of valtex on me when I travel, just in case.
RUN_DMT_@reddit
You’re lucky they gave you good pain meds! That was not my experience 😭
Reddisuspendmeagain@reddit
I’m sorry that happened to you. I can’t imagine the pain. And no one thinks it could be Shingles in your ear. So glad I got the Shingles and pneumonia vaccines.
Gulfhammockfisherman@reddit
Damn, that absolutely sucks.
Bad enough that you need hearing aids? The good news is a lot of Gen X needs them anyway
RUN_DMT_@reddit
I don’t need a hearing aid, at least not at this time. They warned me it could affect my hearing, so I wasn’t totally caught off guard. Was a little terrifying though, I was afraid I’d go completely deaf in that ear. Mostly what I’ve lost is some higher pitched sounds. I test like I’m 15-20 years older than I am at the audiologist. I think decades of standing in front of speakers at concerts did some damage too 😂 I’m sure I’ll need hearing aids at some point. Sigh…
miata90na@reddit
First shot was fine. Tired for a day and weird rash at the site for a few days. Shot 2 next Friday.
Had shingles 2 years ago on my face and scalp.... worst experience of my life. I don't give a shit if the next shot sucks, it won't be 5% of the misery shingles brings.
PurplePenguinCat@reddit
I had it on my face and scalp when I was 42. It suuuccckked hairy balls. I ended up with Postherpetic Neuralgia, so the areas that I had the shingles rash will flare up with pain randomly. It's like "Oh I guess I'm not brushing my hair today because my scalp is on fire."
I'm still too young to be eligible for the shingles vaccine.
miata90na@reddit
I would check with your doc. Since you've already had it they usually recommend it younger.
I'm a woman and I cut all my hair down to a couple inches after a day. Couldn't stand it on my head a moment longer. It's the devil's work for sure. How long have you had the flare ups after healing?
PurplePenguinCat@reddit
I had shingles in 2019, and I still get pain. There is one particular spot on my scalp that is sore to the touch all the time. Sometimes it's so much worse than sore. It's a burning feeling. My doctor said any pain after 18 months is permanent.
It's about the size of a dime, I think. It's in the back so I can't be sure. All the hair came out there when the rash scabbed over.
I'll ask my doctor about getting the vaccine! I remember reading that the younger you have it the first time increases your chances of getting it again. 🤬
miata90na@reddit
Jesus. I'm sorry you're suffering that :(
Def check with your doc, they should have offered it to you.

He’s had eye exams and cataract surgery during this. Shingles in the eye is only detectable when it’s flaring so he would’ve had to see the eye dr while he’s having a flare nearest one his insurance suggested was 3 hours away and I don’t drive. He called my eye dr and they take his medical not vision and got in the same day it started flaring and was diagnosed.
mapleleaffem@reddit

MienaLovesCats@reddit
No; never; I almost died at 18 months old. Because I had a severe life threatening allergic reaction to the "safe" common childhood vaccines.
ChrisRiley_42@reddit
How is an allergy the fault of the vaccine? If you are allergic to Magnesium chloride hexahydrate, then it doesn't matter if you first encountered it as a vaccine, a magnesium supplement, or by eating some tofu...
MienaLovesCats@reddit
🙄 I am not allergic to magnesium chloride or any forms of magnesium. I literally take magnesium every day; because I am now in perimenopause.
ChrisRiley_42@reddit
I was using it as an example. There was something in the vaccine you were allergic to, and it doesn't really matter where you first encounter it, you would be allergic to it in any application.

I haven't planned on the shingles shot since I had such a mild case of chicken pox. I was convinced the school nurse was conspiring with my mom (also a nurse) to keep me from trick-or-treating. I literally had like 3 pocks, no fever or other symptoms, but I did get a week vacation from school.
Own_Celebration5462@reddit
Haha, conspiring to keep you from trick or treating. Kids are funny. I had a mild case as well, but still got the shingles shots. A mild case can still be reactivated as shingles. My sister and brother in law both got shingles, and it was no joke.
LisaLisaPrintJam@reddit
Yeah, I should have been a comedian 😄 You're right, the severity doesn't matter, and I've been counting on my luck (never sick until Covid knocked me down in the pre-vaccine days). I also understand there's a genetic component, and the most unhealthy health skeptics sharing my DNA haven't had shingles.
I will schedule the shot before a 3-day weekend, and hope I don't wind up whining and whimpering the whole time.

You don't normally need the vaccine if you have had shingles, as the infection will have retrained your immune system.

incorrect. i work for an eye clinic and every patient we've had come in with shingles in their eyes has had it at least twice. i do not know what any of their vaccine status was.

Incorrect. I had shingles twice, once in my 30s and once in my 40s. I got the vaccine as soon as I was eligible at 50.
depthchargethel@reddit
That is very harmful misinformation. You can have multiple shingles outbreaks ( I’ve had 15+ over 30 years) and each one has the potential to do permanent and painful nerve damage. The vaccine will help your immune system keep shingles under control.

It varies by insurance provider, but it’s typically 50 in the USA. How much does it cost out of pocket for you?
I had the shingles, I would have paid $10k to have made that go away. Most painful experience of my life! Scary stuff. See if you can pay for the shot!
patroklus68@reddit
£460 in total, but i think it’s worth it to avoid some of the horror stories I’ve seen here. My partner had shingles a few years back. Mild case but it seemed pretty awful nevertheless
BmanGorilla@reddit
That’s steep, but I would pay vs take the chance for years and years. I was told about $350 where I am in the States, but I’m chancing waiting another year
Odd-Currency5195@reddit
Hi. From your name are you 57/58? I'm in UK and want this jab now too. Where did you go?
patroklus68@reddit
Boots will do it. You can reserve a slot online £230 a shot so £460 in total. Ouch!
Odd-Currency5195@reddit
So 230 then some months later another 230, so spread out. Painful, but doable. Thanks! I'll look into this.
NoRestForTheWearyFTW@reddit
I believe you have to get the second jab within 6 months of the first
NoRestForTheWearyFTW@reddit
I got Shingles at 48... silly that you have to wait...
tia2181@reddit
I had shingles at 25..
CatPurrsonNo1@reddit
I’m counting down the days until I can get my shingles vaccine! The horror stories are terrifying.
I’m also a biologist and pretty pro-vax.
Illustrious-Bat1553@reddit
My eyes swelled up after the first shingle vaccine and got a strong fever. Luckily I had some medicine to lower the eye infection and didn't need to go to the doctor. The second vaccine i began i to get have mild nerve spasms and it still hasn't gone away after a year.
RHCP1031@reddit
This is the stuff they don’t talk about. The vax injuries. I’m so sorry this happened to you. Try finding a doctor who works specifically with autoimmune and maybe stem cells. You can reverse these symptoms. I beleive that. Your body wants you to heal!
Illustrious-Bat1553@reddit
Thanks for the advice. Im looking into natural therapy. Luckily, the nerve spasms are mild
Long-Trade-9164@reddit
I got chickenpox in the 8th grade. Anybody know if I need the vaccine at 56? I was 13 or 14 at the time I had it.
Sir_UlrichVonL@reddit
I had chicken pox twice as a kid and got shingles at 21. Yes, you need the vaccine.
Own_Celebration5462@reddit
Shingles is caused by the reactivation of latent chicken pox. So yes.
nikki1234567891011@reddit
Yes.
xiphoid77@reddit
About 30% of people will get shingles. 75-80 % have pretty bad side effects from the Shingles vaccine. You have to do the risk benefit. Do you want a guaranteed 2 long weekends of feeling like crap, or a 70% chance of never getting sick. I'll take the 70% any day. No vaccine for me until they create a new one with just one shot or less side effects.
Sir_UlrichVonL@reddit
I hope you rethink this. Shingles is so, so incredibly painful. I had it at 21 - couldn’t sleep, couldn’t function, & it felt like my skin/under my skin was on fire. I’m counting down until I can get my vaccine because I *never* want to go through that again.
MeatPopsicle_AMA@reddit
I had chicken pox as an adult and spent time in the hospital because of it. If shingles are worse, I’m definitely getting the damn vaccine because it was HORRIBLE.
susanrez@reddit
Your risk analysis is way off.
The 30% chance of incredible reoccurring misery over months and weeks vs 80% chance of 2 days mild probable misery.
Is not an equal 30/80 analysis.
I hope you don’t invest your own money.
rangipai@reddit
That weekend ist a fraction of the full blown shingles expierience. I take the shot.
zeitgeistincognito@reddit
I had no side effects from the vaccine, either shot. I've had friends who've gotten shingles before age 50 and I'd like to avoid the suffering they experienced, thank you!
lambent_ort@reddit
I was 19, studying in a foreign country when I had chicken pox. It was all over my body, everywhere, from my feet to my scalp. I couldn't sit down properly because it was all over my ass and could only eat ice cream because it was all inside my mouth and down my throat. I looked like I a plague victim in some medieval movie. Two weeks of pure agony and misery, and the marks stayed with me for years. The elderly doctor who looked at me said it was the worst case he had ever seen in his entire career. He also told me that while there's a slim chance I would ever get chicken pox again, there's a high likelihood that I would get the shingles when I'm older. I'm 50 now. I've never had shingles. But I don't know if I should get the vaccine. Should I?
emptiedglass@reddit
Call your health care provider first thing Monday morning and get that shit booked ASAP.
If you can, schedule the day off in case it kicks your ass. My first dose did, but YMMV. I recommend doing it on a Friday (or whatever day the end of your work week is). I had some side effects that I couldn't shake until later into day 2. Again, YMMV, but it's best to be prepared!
Own_Celebration5462@reddit
I did mine on Fridays as well. First dose, nothing except an itchy knot that was a few inches from the injection site. Second one, flu-ish feeling on the weekend. Fine by Monday.
sherlockjr1@reddit
Felt like someone punched me in the arm HARD
emptiedglass@reddit
That was actually the most pleasant of all the side effects I experienced haha!
Lost-Platypus8271@reddit

Eastern-Joke-7537@reddit

Even after getting shingles, they still recommend getting the vaccine.
CoderPro225@reddit
Get the vaccine. I had a horrible case of chicken pox at 13. I also have an autoimmune disease and am diabetic, all of which compounds my risk. I got it at 50 as soon as I possibly could. My mom got shingles. I’m so not interested in getting it!!
NoRestForTheWearyFTW@reddit
Yes. I had THOUSANDS of pox. In my eyes, up my nose, bottoms of my feet.. (when i was a kid). Got Shingles at 48...
sherlockjr1@reddit
I was 14. Still pretty old to be getting it. Not quite as bad as yours but I still have scars from it
Personal_Secret_234@reddit
Ditto at 5 for chicken pox almost as bad as the poster with it in his mouth.
I still have scars too from it. I have not gotten a shingles vaccination. To sound stupid as hell, if this crap is dormant in our body and we can never get rid of it, then we're screwed either way.
I've gotten vaccinated for a few things- like the Flu a few years back and got the worse case of the flu. After that I said screw it. I was forced into getting covid shits by my then job and also got sick as the Dickens from it. In bed for a week.
With everything going on in the CDC now and HHS, I think I'm going to sit them out til 2029.
sherlockjr1@reddit
My boss got shingles in his eye. I booked the shot the next week.
Paperwife2@reddit
My case was just like that. It was horrible. I have my shingles vax scheduled next month.
DearTumbleweed5380@reddit

You can walk right into CVS and get it. As a nurse I can tell you that shingles is painful af. No joke.

I've had adult chicken pox and shingles twice. I'm getting the vaccine next year when my dr will finally give it to me. My first shingles left me with sciatica for 7 years.

I had chicken pox at 34. The doctor didn't believe at first that's what I had. I don't remember what he gave me, but I spent most of the next three days sleeping, and glad for it, because being awake was hell.

Multiple bouts of shingles. My right eye is f*cked, can't see in the dark from retinal scarring. Face still itches when I'm stressed. I got the vax at 40 and paid a fortune but soo worth it. Also got it again once I hit 50.
I still periodically get shingles (always different nerves) but it goes away in a day or two and is very mild.
Kid_Ymkus@reddit
I got the vaccine about a year ago. Are you insinuating that you need a booster or the vaccine again in a number of years?
Ancient-Space1260@reddit
Probably not. But I wasn't messing around and once I hit 50 it was covered so I did it again.
TraditionalEgg3804@reddit
Really?? I thought the vaccines prevented it. How naive, I guess. So, when you have flare ups, do you take anything or it just goes away?
Ancient-Space1260@reddit
Just goes away. I have valacyclovir on hand if I need it but the outbreak usually lasts less than a day before it starts going away on its own.

It sometimes baffles me, how different the US and Europe are. I don’t know a single person who’ve had the shingles vaccine or even considered getting it and I don’t know anyone who’ve had the shingles.
Redkris73@reddit
It's not just the US , I'm in Australia which actually has a good general vaccination program...unfortunately the shingles vaccine is only free for immune compromised people and people aged 65+. I do know quite a few people who've had shingles.
Agrippa_Aquila@reddit
Same for Ontario, Canada. If I want to get the shingles vaccine before I'm 65, I need to pay approximately $300.
Reader47b@reddit
Maybe people just don't talk about having the shingles as much where you live? In Europe, incidences of shingles are 7-8 per 1,000 in people 50 or over, about the same as in the U.S. Now, vaccination rates are considerably lower in Europe. (There are some exceptions, like the UK, where vaccination rates are similar to the U.S..) So it's interesting that with lower vaccination rates, and a larger 60+ population (as a percentage of total population), Europe doesn't have higher rates. I wonder why that might be? If we looked at it country by country, the comparison might be different, though. Europe is pretty broad.
ThirstyWolfSpider@reddit
You might also see improvement in severity with vaccination even if you don't see improvement in incidence.
britlover23@reddit
i know so many people that have had shingles, and it’s truly terrible. i had a minor reaction to the second shot and that’s it. highly recommend this vaccine.
UncleBoopBetty@reddit
Guess you’re fortunate. I know several people who’ve had shingles, and it’s incredibly painful and lasts a very long time.
SomethingClever70@reddit
I know plenty of people who’ve had the vaccine, and some people who have had the disease. The ones who have had the disease all described how horrible it is. Isn’t it great that we can avoid something awful by getting 2 shots? The shingles vaccines made me feel terrible for about 24 hours each time (started with soreness at injection site, then later felt like I’d been hit by a truck), but I will take that over getting the shingles.
NotWifeMaterial@reddit
you can have long-term effects after having a shingles infection. One of my colleagues has been sick nonstop for the past six months. I also encourage everybody in our age group to get the pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine. It is very effective.
And especially if I had grandkids, I would be vaccinated for RSV to protect those babies
TheGrumpyYankee@reddit
I'm getting my 2nd shingles shot next week. Had no side effects with the first shot, hope this next one goes as well. Worth it either way!
tommyalanson@reddit
I got the shots. First was mid, 2nd was not great for 24 hours and then I was fine.
Better than getting shingles.
LayerNo3634@reddit
Husband wouldn't get the vaccine until a friend of a friend got Shingles in his groin. Yes, it was as bad as it sounds. Husband got the vaccine the next day.
CollectsTooMuch@reddit
I got my shingles shots. The first one was no big deal. The second one fucks you up so do it on Friday so you have the weekend to recover. I had a ton of vacation days so I burned a couple. It was like the flu on crack the way my joints and muscles hurt.
But I’m good till they out me in a box.
MaximumJones@reddit
The mild symptoms of the shingles vaccine beats the ever loving hell out of getting shingles.
NoRestForTheWearyFTW@reddit
Yeah... I have no clue if it ever really goes away... but 7 years now... it still surprises me... Painful! (And I had a mild case on the outside of my thigh. Still would never wish this (or God forbid, worse) on anyone... and I've had multiple spinal surgeries and both knees replaced, ankle reconstructed... this was way worse
LolaBabyLove@reddit
Yep. Bells Palsy that was triggered by shingles and my facial nerves still aren’t right ten months later. Get the vaccine.

Got the shingles vax. A very interesting side effect of the vaccine is how much it's slowed down/ pretty much stopped my herpes outbreaks. Spring and fall allergies would cause it to flare and pretty much guarantee I'd be walking around with a sore on my face but since the vax no major break outs. It's a nice unexpected result.
bonkersyeti@reddit
You know, I hadn't even noticed this until I read your comment. I used to get cold sores when I was stressed out, but I haven't since getting the shingles wax. It didn't occur to me to connect the two.

I’ve tried to get the vaccine. I fit the criteria for early vaccination in the uk as I am severely immunocompromised. I wrote in to my dr who turned it down flatly. Had to actually then speak to a second dr who told me to book in with a nurse and get it done.
What a waste of time though. Surely prevention is better than me having to go to hospital for urgent transfusions if I develop shingles??

Personal_Secret_234@reddit
Wait.
So if you can still get it, then the vaccine is ineffective?
The reason to get the vaccine is NOT to have an attack of the shingles. If I can still get it it defeats the purpose of the jab.
ActionCalhoun@reddit
It’s much less likely to get it and it much less worse if you do but it is still possible. Like how getting the flu shot or the Covid shot doesn’t guarantee you’ll never get those, it builds up your resistance.

Having never got them, I don't have to take a shingles vax.
My daughter is vaxxed from CP and caught chickenpox anyway when she was 8, which her doctor said if she was at least 20 years older he would swear it was shingles. She's 14 and had shingles last year again. A third time and he's going to vax her.
Meanwhile...I have to avoid those with any variation like the plague.
banksy_h8r@reddit
Had you considered the possibility that you had an asymptomatic case?
Also, you might want the vaccine anyways. I've heard full-blown chickenpox as an adult truly sucks.
FabricArsonist@reddit
I had one with my son and it put me in icu.
I don't have an immunity to it as far as they can tell. I do have an immunity to TB and small pox and some other bad nasties (weird testing for not coming down to both when heavily exposed....so they had fun with my blood), so I guess it was a bio trade off?
I catch it every few years and other than when I was a baby, have never gotten more than 4 areas of it. I catch it, and my immune system goes nuts.
It is classified as a weird autoimmune disorder. My immune system is fantastic except for vitiligo, and another autoimmune disorder, but on the other hand...I'm a middle aged woman and my bone density is better than 99% of people. This "weird" autoimmune dis is a lot like the movie unbreakable. Although I have broke bones, what takes 6 to 8 weeks is usually healed in about 2. And I really have to break it, i don't get hairline fractures. Like falling 20 feet on my elbow or having a car fall on me from a jack (broke my arm).
When my immune system goes into overdrive, I don't get sick as such, but I get extremely fatigued, run a fever (my body temp naturally is 100.9, this is like 102-103 area), and have no motivation for anything.
I also don't hardly bruise, i rarely bleed (i do, but i cut my finger and wipe it off and it's done or will seep for a minute or two), and have very little feelings in my fingertips. Yes, I can turn food without a spatula.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk about weird shit.

I heard a theory that when everyone would get chicken pox, adults were being exposed to it every few years, and our bodies would fight it off and not get shingles. Now that kids get the chicken pox vaccine, those of us who actually had chicken pox aren't ever exposed to it, so we aren't able to fight off the shingles erruptions. Never heard of them in the 80’s! Heard of them somewhat recently(few years ago). The anti-vaxers were having the chickenpox parties. Just parents setting up their kids for shingles. I just checked that the chickenpox vaccine is 51% effective in preventing shingles.
temerairevm@reddit
I think it’s just perception. When you’re younger you tune out old people talking about their medical problems or they just don’t tell you. Now it’s your friends.
liddybuckfan@reddit
Exactly--my mom had shingles and I remember that but I would have had no idea about what other adults around us had shingles.
Dangital@reddit
This is answer.
happyvector@reddit
Yep. My mom had shingles when I was a kid, and again when I was in my 30s. It wasn’t extremely uncommon - I think you’re right in that we just tuned them out
2014Subaru@reddit
The first shot kicked my butt for a few days, second one, nothing
Bflatclar1981@reddit
I got Zostavax and when appropriate, Shingrix. They really didn't hurt or make me sick after. I did get the very lightest case of shingles during the pandemic on a small area right flank. You could hardly see it, like light goosebumps, that just annoyed the crap outta me. I can imagine what it would've been like without vaccination. I took the antiviral and got relief in 12 hours. Thank you medical science.
arrasonline@reddit
I get all my vaccines my doctor recommends. My family has shown me what happens when you ignore medical advice. It ain’t pretty ignoring medical advice.
ratbastid@reddit
I got my second one this morning!
Ok-Mulberry7195@reddit
Have the Tylenol handy. I was so glad the pharmacist warned us about shot two. About 12 hours after getting it, fever kicked in and felt pretty awful for 24 hours. Well worth it though!
MistakeMaterial4134@reddit
The shots were horrible but much better than getting shingles!
CaliJaneBeyotch@reddit
Man, that shingles vax knocked me down but better than getting shingles.
Electrical_Fishing81@reddit
Getting it on my bday this year. Been begging for it.
Odd-Animal-1552@reddit
I did the shingles vax a couple of years ago. Both took me out for a couple of days but worth it. Got a text from my pharmacy that the age for the RSV vaccine was lowered to 50. I’m definitely getting that one, too. Had RSV last year. Straight up NOT a good time!
Illustrious_Leg_2537@reddit
Have a friend who lost an adult family member to RSV. 😞
Odd-Animal-1552@reddit
I am so sorry. RSV is no joke. I was sick for almost two months. Three rounds of antibiotics for the bronchitis that developed as a lovely follow up. I had trouble breathing for months afterwards. First time in my life getting prescribed an inhaler.
Illustrious_Leg_2537@reddit
Glad you came through it. Sounds like you had a battle with it for sure.
Odd-Animal-1552@reddit
The worst part was that I am not an unhealthy person. That ish hit hard and fast. Everyone needs to take RSV seriously.
loaves2121@reddit
I did not have chicken pox, so I’ll pass on the vaccine.
DanDanDan0123@reddit
Get the chickenpox vaccine!!
jkinatl2@reddit
I got both of my shingles vaccines this past year and they were a nothingburger. Maybe my arm was sore that weekend? I know YMMV but the way the pharmacist was timid asking me about it made wonder/afraid if it was going to be some horrific event? It wasn’t. I mean, I’d probably not offer to help somebody move that weekend just in case. But it’s two injections, I think about six weeks apart? And Insurance covered it. Now that I just turned 60 they are harassing me about getting my hepatitis B vaccines. So I guess I’ll be able to talk about that soon as well. Greetings from the lower end of generation X.
I_Am_Become_Air@reddit
The worst bit of the Hep B shots is to remember the darn second shots!
SuitableHope7813@reddit
Or to take both doses then find out you’re a non responder on a titer test and get to do them again.
Putrid-Tale-5114@reddit
That & finding out via titers TWICE that your levels are suboptimal so you have to restart the series 🙄 I love being in healthcare
PahzTakesPhotos@reddit
I get my vaccines when I need them, so I'm never really worried... but I had NO IDEA you could get shingles in your eye. That sounds painful and terrifying.
DanDanDan0123@reddit
You can get shingles internally too! I wouldn’t want to learn how that feels!!
Artichokeydokey8@reddit
That’s why i got the vaccine!
MishmoshMishmosh@reddit
Omg!! Yes I got all the vaccines my doc recommended and my husband too
Imaginary_Penalty_33@reddit
Had shingles in my right eye 10 years ago. It left scarring that affects my vision still.
Weary_Commission_346@reddit
I got the shingles vax series a few years ago.
First one, eh. The second shot had awful side effects that knocked me out for a day or two. The third one, not so bad.
But I’ve heard horror stories from older friends who have suffered shingles, so the vax was worth it! I do not want to risk that kind of damage and pain.
msjammies73@reddit
Three? I thought it was just a 2 shot series?
Blodeuyn13@reddit
Hmm 3? It's 2 shots where we live in the US.
liddybuckfan@reddit
My mom had shingles and I remember how painful it was for her. There was no vaccine back then. The shot sucks for a few hours, but it is way better than getting shingles.
Blodeuyn13@reddit
Just had my 2nd shingles shot last week. Sore arm for 4 days, but much better than the first one. Also got the RSV vaccine at the same time. That arm wasn't really sore at all.
JSmuttyCM@reddit
No shot
essdeecee@reddit
Everything I hear about shingles absolutely sucks. While I wasn't feeling great after my second shot, it still seems way better than getting shingles
tandem_kayak@reddit
A friend got it and it absolutely wrecked him for about two months. I got my vax without hesitation. No way I want to go through that.
Munchkin_Media@reddit
And they come back. I don't know what doctors are playing at. When you get shingles young they absolutely come back.
Munchkin_Media@reddit
I have recurring shingles. Ramsay Hunt on my nerve. It's been a nightmare. I second this. GET THE VACCINE!!!
petuniabuggis@reddit
Recurring shingles. Didn’t know that was a thing. I’m so sorry!
Munchkin_Media@reddit
Yes it's a nightmare and don't believe doctors when they say it's impossible. I was hospitalized as a child with chicken pox. My trigeminal nerve has been compromised since birth so the virus attacked. I had a craniotomy to try to help with the constant pain. I can't have another because the shingles got into my brain and I was in a coma for a week. For the love of GOD please everyone get the vaccine!
Lonely-Anything@reddit
My doc had two patients lose their sight due to shingles. Damn straight I got mine.
dancingfirebird@reddit
The shingles vax is already on my calendar for when I turn 50 in a few weeks!
ecdc05@reddit
Same! My coworker got shingles six weeks before he turned 50. Four months to go for me, I better not get it…
jaxbravesfan@reddit
The pharmacist brought it up to me a couple of months ago, and I declined, telling him I was seeing my doctor in a few days and would ask him about it. When I asked my doctor, he told me he wouldn’t worry about getting it until I hit 60. So that’s what I was planning on doing. Until my friend, who is a few years older than me, but still in his 50s, contracted shingles a week and a half ago. Every time I text to check up on me, he tells me how absolutely miserable he is. And this is one of the toughest guys I’ve ever met. So yeah, I’m getting the first shot soon.
StreetMolasses6093@reddit
I had shingles at 48, and the pain is indescribable. It went on for six weeks. The vaccine is so worth it.
Manacure@reddit
Millennial here - I had chicken pox when I was 4 and on my 22nd birthday, I got shingles that started in my ear and spread throughout the right side of my scalp. I had a couple of scary blisters really close to my eye and mouth. Shingles is no joke. I was stuck in my house for over 3 weeks waiting for the blisters to scab over and heal. I’m sorry to hear about your hubby’s eye. I still had nerve damage in my ear and developed psoriasis at the base of my hairline which I believe is also from shingles.
PSA if you’ve never had chicken pox, you can absolutely get it if you’re exposed to someone with shingles. And then from there you can get shingles. Good stuff Maynard.
Heliotrope88@reddit
I never had chickenpox (that I remember) so in the 90’s my doc told me I could get the “new” chickenpox vaccine. Should I still get the shingles vaccine? My current doctor was like, “yeah sure, can’t hurt.” I still have a year to go. Has anyone had the shingles vaccine but not had chickenpox that they can remember?
Bookishly_o_O@reddit
I never had it. Mentioned that to my son’s pediatrician when he got his chicken pox shot. Doc scoffed (we of an age when practically everyone got it) but drew for a titer. Came back with the news that I truly had never had it. He ordered me a chicken pox vaccine right then. But in recent years my current doc urged me to go ahead and get the shingles shot too. So I’ve had both vaccines and neither illness (woo-hoo!).
missblissful70@reddit
Yes. My mother also didn’t remember my having chicken pox. But my doctor said the shingles vaccines were absolutely imperative either way.
Otherwise_Object_446@reddit
I’ve had ocular shingles and it was miserable. You can still get the vaccine afterwards but my former (terrible) GP made me wait a year after my shingles developed. Most practitioners tell you to wait a month or two.
FortheloveofSuki@reddit
I had chicken pox twice. I definitely need to get the vaccine. Thanks for the tip.
Far_Eye_3703@reddit
Best wishes to your hubby. My GP had a patient lose an eye to Shingles. He said if he (GP) needed a half dozen vaccines but could only get one, he'd get the Shingles vaccine.
littlescreechyowl@reddit
I never had chicken pox but I’m immune compromised so I got my shingles vaccine at 43ish.
A friend just had them in her eye and it was gross and she said it hurt so bad.
Unique-Variation7077@reddit
I got shingles last October on my right side for the first time. Still have a slight rash, it sucks I keep putting anti itch ointment though so it's slowly getting better. Can't get vaccine til I'm 50. I got a year to go.
temerairevm@reddit
You can just pay but it’s a couple hundred bucks. A friend of mine did it. Everyone in her family gets shingles.
NightGod@reddit
You can get them before 50 now, you just might have to fight your insurance for it
IGHOTI907@reddit
100%. Shingles follows specific nerve chains. I got it on my scalp and around my eye. Doctor told me that one nerve chain over and I would likely lose sight on the affected side. As bad as the vaccine is, (shot #2 suuuuucked), shingles the disease was far worse
Numerous_Office_4671@reddit
So you got the vaccine after you already had shingles? Or did you get the vaccine and still get shingles?
IGHOTI907@reddit
I got shingles before I reached the vaccine age cutoff. Then I was forced to wait until I crossed the threshold. Maddening
blueblocker2000@reddit
This is why I got vaxxed. My eyes suck as it is. Someone on here also mentioned they got shingles and it attacked some main nerve in his weener. Homie don't play that ****!
Flababulous@reddit
Jumped all over the shingles vax(xes) when I turned 50. Had chicken pox 2x as a kid (guess I'm special), have seen other friends and family struggle, no way I was going to tempt fate.
PortentProper@reddit
I have CP 2x as well!
baconAndOrCabbage@reddit
Me too. As a child and an adult. I wasn't really sick for either but still have a few scars.
SewerHarpies@reddit
I never had chicken pox! I was offered the shingles vaccine early due to autoimmune issues, so I jumped on it.
BookNerdUnicorn@reddit
I got the shingles vax at 46 because I am immunocompromised. I had chicken pox as a kid. I was all over that.
ArtSea4151@reddit
Same here. I had it when I was small then my friend got it in high school. I still hung out (and obviously ridiculed) with him since I already had it but I ended up with a mild case.
cruisereg@reddit
+1 for having chicken pox twice as a kid. First case was mild and I was exposed again to it when friends had it and my mother assumed I was immune. Picked up while keeping them company….. ugh
Pristine-Lawyer-3260@reddit
I got pox during my study abroad in Austria at 21.... Oy.
I jumped on the vax during COVID when I turned 50.. the pharmacy saw me anyway!!!

I seriously wonder how easy life has to have been for you to be afraid of a stupid vaccine or even worse, unafraid of getting shingles.
mjh8212@reddit (OP)
He wasn’t afraid but I have no idea why he didn’t get it. He goes for a physical every year it should’ve come up. He’s had chicken pox so he knew it was a risk.
ugglygirl@reddit
I’d rather call a stranger afraid than call him a dumb head. 🤣
mjh8212@reddit (OP)
I already called him that so your good
rahah2023@reddit
If you had chicken pox you are susceptible to get shingles
MamaPajamaMama@reddit
I just got home from my second Shingrix shot. I've never had shingles, not sure if it's because I had a very mild case of the chicken pox at a late age - I was 17. Still got the shot though.
whirlydad@reddit
Got my shingles shot along with a couple others last month. I thought my arm was going to fall off. Worth it, but space them out!
i_like_beer23@reddit
I had TDAP and the first shingles shot on the same day. The next day I felt like I got hit by a truck… The second shingles shot was much better overall, but I had injection site tenderness for a few days.
cugamer@reddit
I turn 50 this year and as soon as I can get it, I'm taking that vaccine.
soonerpgh@reddit
I have Muscular Dystrophy and am considered a "high-risk" person for just about everything. I don't get them as often as I should, but i can confidently say that the years i have gotten vaccinated (flu, etc.) have been easier than the years i haven't. I still usually catch stuff, but the vaccines make it a much milder and shorter illness than without. Get pricked! It's better than losing a week to fever.
VonGrippyGreen@reddit
I got my shots at 47. Too many horror stories floating around about how bad the affliction is. Plenty of stories of the shots being tough as well, but I asked my doctor for the shots, and she was fine with me getting them "early".
FTR, my first shot was nothing. Second one was sore arm for a couple days. Everybody's different, but I can vouch for some of us not having the awful three days or whatever.
And even if I had the awful reaction, it still sounds a fuck of a lot better than actual shingles.
RedditSkippy@reddit
I got my first dose the Friday after I turned 50, and then I got my second dose over the summer. I have known a few people who got shingles and everyone said it was awful.
iloveairportsushi@reddit
My grandmother got it - had to take morphine for the pain
iloveairportsushi@reddit
50 here, just got my first dose. Free for me but it’s not free until you’re 65 in Ontario Canada. Get the shot!
Darkwing873@reddit
Shingles is one of the most widely known bad things to get, why would anyone refuse that shot? My mother in law was suffering for months and months with shingles.
TheFonzDeLeon@reddit
Some people believe nothing is real unless it happens to them. Plus massive fear mongering around vaccines for decades has convinced people Alex Jones is more qualified to talk about healthcare than their actual doctors.
Oh-THAT-dude@reddit
I am so sorry to hear this. A friend of mine suffers from this and he was quite miserable for a long time.
The Shingles vaccine isn’t cheap but boy is it worth it.
Pontiful_Poc@reddit
Will I get autism at 55? /s
PudgyGroundhog@reddit
It also depends on how much Tylenol your mom took while pregnant. Don't worry, ivermectin will help you out. Or maybe snorting some cocaine off a toilet seat.
Lopsided_Tomatillo27@reddit
I’m getting my second shingles shot in a few days. It took me losing half of my foot to start taking my health seriously.
BookNerdUnicorn@reddit
I am sorry to hear this. Did you have that complication from shingles?
Lopsided_Tomatillo27@reddit
No, it was unrelated. I got an infection in my foot and tried to “walk it off” for a week like an idiot. By then it had spread to my bones.
I didn’t have health insurance between the ages of 19 and about 50. I’m 53 now. I was lucky to have good health. Never got more sick than the flu. Didn’t have any serious accidents. So the idea of going to the doctor was reserved for life threatening emergencies.
The amputation was a wake up call that I can’t just ignore my health and hope for the best anymore.
AdEastern9303@reddit
Worked with a guy about 5 years older. He got shingles on his head. After seeing him go through that, my wife and I got the vaccine as soon as we turned 50.
Silvaria928@reddit

altairstarlite@reddit
Conan O'Brien talks about having shingles in his eye once. Wouldn't wish that on most of my enemies.
1043b@reddit
I had shingles for the first time when I was 20. It suuuucked. I have relatively minor cases twice since. I still can't get the shot due to previous auto immune disorder.
Would definitely recommend preventative care for those who are eligible.
cruisereg@reddit
Thanks for the PSA! I just got my first shingles vaccination a few weeks ago and I’m silly for waiting this long. I will get the second shot inside the prescribed time window! I do NOT want to deal with stuff like this, I have enough other things that are going wrong health wise.
PudgyGroundhog@reddit
I just turned 50 - getting both my first shingles shot and pneumonia vaccine next week. I've already cleared my calendar in case I get a reaction. Would still rather have that than shingles!
Shingles in the sounds painful - I hope he gets it worked out.

It’s apparently quite protective against dementia as well. My dad is currently severely impacted by dementia. You damn right I’m getting the shingles vaccine as soon as I turn 50.
Plenty_Cress_1359@reddit

HedgeCowFarmer@reddit
Absolutely. My person didn’t and has recurring symptoms. Said it was the very worst thing ever for the five week bout. Get em!!!
I-used2B-a-Valkyrie@reddit
I just turned 50 and I’m 4 weeks post-mastectomy but AS SOON AS I GET CLEARED, I’m getting my shot! I was going to do it on my birthday last month but they said no way, too close to surgery (48 hours) and to wait until I’m 8 weeks post op at least.
GrumpySnarf@reddit
I had both shingles shots recently. It was a big ado about almost nothing. It was less intense than a flu or COVID shot. My left hip arthritis flared severely the next day and I couldn't put weight on it without a cane for about 20 hours. But the Dr who examined me said she didn't think it was related. I am not so sure of that. BUT IT IS STILL WORTH IT to reduce risk of serious illness from shingles. Eff that noise.
mrshatnertoyou@reddit
The shingles shots suck but shingles is much worse.
dormouse6@reddit
It’s different for everyone. I had no problem besides a sore arm. I feel much worse after the Covid vaccine.
Barragin@reddit
why do the shots suck?
mikescha@reddit
I never react to vaccines except for maybe a sore arm for a bit. About 8 hours after my second shingles vaccine, I developed a serious fever and my wife was considering taking me to urgent care. It went away after a few hours but that was a rough night. I'd still rather have that than shingles, though!
mrshatnertoyou@reddit
You feel miserable, the first one was for about a half a day and the second one put me out for whole day, felt so sick.
EternalNewCarSmell@reddit
It's a live attenuated virus vaccine so most people will feel like shit to some degree for a day or two after.

IANAD and YMMV, but alpha lipoic acid is what finally controlled my post-herpectic neuralgia that I battled unsuccessfully for eight years. I got shingles at age 37 and didn't find relief until I started using alpha lipoic acid to relieve neuralgia in my leg after a back injury. It was prescribed by a pain medicine specialist. It is a supplement that has been used in Europe for years.

I watched my dad suffer with it. Promised myself I'd not do that. I'll agree with your statement - get that vaccine!
bizzybaker2@reddit
As a 55yr old I got shots x 2, felt really rough after the second one but it was nothing that rest, fluids, and ibuprofen/acetaminophen did not cure. As a nurse who has cared for people with shingles (including involving an eye like OP's husband), and seen the misery of people sick enough to be hospitalized, it was a small price to pay.
Mindless-Baker-7757@reddit

There is a thought that exposure to live pox (or possibly shingles) is enough to stimulate an immune response. Some countries do not mandate the vaccine for kids because they worry without that exposure the older folk will have more shingles eruptions. We will see as the real life data comes in.
Soggy-Bottom_Boy@reddit
Oh wow that is terrible. I hope he gets over it as quickly as possible.
