Glasses

Hey guys,
Looking to see what sunglasses you guys use for the pilots with glasses. Ones that you can wear over your glasses
I don’t wanna wear contacts every time I go flying as I’m wasting pairs and could save some money not needing to buy a whole bunch every time
friENTofthepeople@reddit
Fit overs work but they look goofy and the optics aren't great. I got a pair of prescription RayBans through ez contacts for a fraction of what my optometrist quoted and they've been perfect
Expression_Possible@reddit
I currently have a very light frame aviator style sunglasses with my prescription and the transition lense which does wonders, but i also have started to use contact lenses for my IFR rating because its much more comfortable
flyingron@reddit
I've had no problem getting the exact same prescription of my regular glasses in sunglasses.
If you where contacts, you can get a set of cool raybans.
Fancy_o_lucas@reddit
You can get perception lenses in most Raybans too.
flyingron@reddit
Yeah, never did that, but I had Seregeti Drivers done up as prescription for years until the end of the availability for glass prescription lenses (a sad day for me).
Kein-Deutsc@reddit
I’ve never used sunglasses, anyone else? No hate, just never wanted to ig
Lord_Giles@reddit
I've forgotten sunglasses twice... i used squints, or my hand. Flying below clouds or using the entire earth works too (flying at night)
Long term non-use of sunglasses increases odds of macular degeneration, cateracts, and cancers.
You do have to be careful with sunglasses though... if the lenses are crap, they might have a coating that reflects the uv and is seperate from the tint. The coating can wear over time without visually effecting the lens so your eye adjusts to the lower light and gets more uv damage than you would get without sunglasses.

Idk 🤷♂️ I don’t think I’ve ever owned a pair of sunglasses in my life. The only issues with the sun I ever encounter are with heat.
I’ll look into it though, I do want strong eyes for a long time to come
Willflyfordrums@reddit
Prescription sunglasses. Non polarized.
Dingletonius@reddit
The correct answer. Wasn’t cheap for me, but I am so happy I did this.
Effective-Scratch673@reddit
Try eyebuydirect next time. My prescription unfortunately keeps changing so I use it as an excuse to buy a new set of regular glasses + shades every year. Still cheaper than going to brick and mortar optometrist and just changing the lenses.
jmkdeluxe@reddit
Second eyebuydirect. I get 3 pairs of clear glasses and 2 sunglasses all for under $200 total every year since my script also keeps changing
Kemerd@reddit
You can also get I shit you not transition polarized lenses now they’re amazing
Roger_Freedman_Phys@reddit
Same. I also have polycarbonate lenses (which will not break in the unhappy event that a bird cones through the windscreen and hits me in the face) and photogray (so the lenses automatically become sunglasses, even inside the cockpit).
TheGreatestAuk@reddit
I HATE contacts, so I bit the bullet and bought prescription sunglasses. I use Randolph Aviators, I was dubious about the bayonet temples, but they hold tight, and they really work under a headset.
I had a pair of Ray-Ban Caravans, but the Randolphs are a thousand times better built. The lenses are great, they're made from heavier metal so they'll stand up to proper abuse, and the screws are peened so they'll almost never come loose.
Make sure you go non-polarised. Polarised are nicer to use, but they'll black out a glass cockpit, so they're a pretty obvious no-no.

Love my Randolph glasses, get the ones with the arms that fit under the headset better

Polarized all the way.

Flying Eyes with their magnetic sunglasses attachment.
bddgfx@reddit
Prescription Ray-Bans, non polarized with a gradient (makes the panel easier to see).
No-Brilliant9659@reddit
I have polarized prescription sunglasses. The polarization can interfere with screens in your aircraft, but I haven’t had any issues yet (as in, no interference, I have to turn my head 90° for it to degrade/black out the screen). You can also get non polarized lenses but I found those aren’t as dark as polarized.
Antique-Kitchen-1896@reddit
Flying eyes frame with prescription transition lens. Remembering to bring another bit of stuff is for chumps lol.
Effective-Scratch673@reddit
You are not allowed to call anyone a chump while wearing transition lenses. It's the dorkiest option, let's be honest here.

Pilot discovers RX Sunglasses.
I buy from eyebuydirect.com , quick turnaround, an off-brand pair is less than $100 if you don't require any hard correction. They also have Brand frames that add a couple hundred dollars on top of that, depends on your budget.
If you need a new prescription, most places will do it like for $99 without insurance (never get vision insurance if only used for prescription glasses, it's a scam)
SaratogaFlyer@reddit
If you want the best, get prescription Aviators from Randolph Engineering. I know they say not to get polarized for flying but I have no problem seeing my screens with them and polarized is so much better in my opinion. I do have backup/non polarized sunglasses
bridgefour_@reddit
Ombraz.
If you send them a copy of your CFI Cert (if you have one) they set you up with a “Pro Account” which gives you a huge discount. They look kinda silly but I rock them every day on the 145 “cause I’m a stud. I’m ballsy. I don’t take shit from anyone.” -Arnold Schwarzenegger

BackgroundJelly4552@reddit
I second this! They are amazing and the cord doesn’t break the noise canceling seal of headsets. They don’t have non polarized rx sunglasses as an option when purchasing online but if you email them they are happy to work with you to get a pair non polarized for flying.
Kandranos@reddit
American Optical Geoffrey's non polarized. Light weight for long legs and flat sides so headset sits over them well without breaking seal.
mvpilot172@reddit
Prescription RayBans with non-polarized lenses for screens in the cockpit.
Desperate_Exercise13@reddit
Prescription sunglasses.

When i was in training, I eventually had to get glasses to have 20/20 in both eyes. I pretty much only wore them to fly, and got those goofy ahh clip-on ones that flip up and down.
Eventually though, the time came to both wear my glasses more and also have proper sunglasses for flying, so prescription lens time. I know Costco optical frequently runs deals like buy one/get another half off (last I checked their sunglasses were only polarized though). Just like an iPad and headset, it’s an investment. Even if you’re the clumsy type, you’ll take care of and keep track of them better than you would a cheapo set.
EngineerFly@reddit
Depends on your cockpit and how your eyes work. I can’t see well inside my cockpit with sunglasses, so I found a pair (prescription, special order, and $300) that are dark on top, clear on the bottom, and have medium distance correction on the clear bottom part.
Tman3355@reddit
Unless you wanna get a pair of sunglass clips then your best bet is another pair if rx sunglasses.
Fight_Or_Flight_FL@reddit
I used some Zenni glasses with extra sets of flat magnetic clip on sunglass fronts. Saved up some scratch and bought the flying version of the same idea. Regular glasses with little magnets in the frame to snap on sunglass fronts. I bought extra because I tend lose them all over the place.
xtalgeek@reddit
Prescription wraparound non polarized gradient sunglasses. Best investment ever for flying.
Hung_Like_A_Mare@reddit
Bruh… get Rx sunglasses.
kkirchoff@reddit
Yes. It also, I bought some over the sunglasses from Amazon for $20 and they actually work well. No interference and sometimes I forget that I have them on.
Of course it’s better to get prescription glasses which is what j eventually did.
They look godawful but as a bonus they don’t let the sun shine in the sides.
BUY THEM WITHOUT POLARIZATION.
Environmental-Block1@reddit
Randolph Engineering, hands down. Get the prescription lenses and, as @Hung_ said, swap when needed.
Weasel474@reddit
This is the way. Got a side pocket for my case- if it's sunny, swap. When night falls, swap. Pretty easy.
kevinossia@reddit
I own non-polarized prescription sunglasses.
Yes, sometimes that means I walk around outdoors with two pairs glasses of glasses on me (one on my face, the other hanging by my collar). I'm fine with that but apparently some folks find that annoying.
Prescription sunglasses are the best way to go. Get yourself a nice pair of aviator shades.

Flying GA with an over-ear headset, I use a pair of glasses that fits a magnetic sunglasses attachment (check out zennioptical.com) but like 5-10 magnetic clip ons (they’re only a few dollars each). You’ll have enough for when you lose them, scratch them, or when you just give up and throw them in your pocket at the end of the day and break them!
Flying jets, I just use RX sunglasses with an in-ear headset.
Atom_Tom@reddit
I use Flying Eyes - Luzon with the magnetic clip on sunglasses. Work perfectly, very comfortable, very tough and super quick to change from sunglasses to normal as and when I need to.
I'd never use normal clip ons, they look awful.
MehCFI@reddit
Sunglasses that fit over glasses are gonna suck with a headset. You could wear clipon sunglasses, that’d be the only over-glasses option.
You could also get prescription sunglasses.
For instrument training, highly recommend these clip on foggles instead of trying to swap pairs on short final.
I switched to contacts tho and honestly well worth jt
