What do people think of the RSPB bird seed restriction request?

RSPB have requested that people do not feed wild birds seed through the summer in order to stop the spread of disease. Bird feed companies are saying it will starve more than it saves from disease and that it is not needed throughout the entire country anyway as only certain areas are affected. I feed the birds where I am and they are almost all sparrows; hundreds of them! The RSPB have said feed mealworms and fat balls etc instead, so I have been doing this for a week now. Unfortunately, the birds are not eating it and the numbers coming to my garden have almost dried up. I'm not sure if to take no notice of the RSPB and feed them seed.
