Best DFW area places to eat Mexican food?

It's a birthday dinner for a 12 year old, so kid friendly environment is preferred. Looking for more tex mex options but open to more traditional food too. She wants enchiladas so if you know a good place for those xD
relztneg@reddit
Salsa Tex Mex!
Business-Tomorrow-90@reddit
gatekeeper! don’t need an even longer wait at Salsa Tex Mex!

Fantastic grilled anything there. Also, it's actually in Dallas, which I'm assuming the op was after.
FIalt619@reddit
We love Hacienda Ranch in Frisco.
boldjoy0050@reddit
Yes, Mariano's and their parent restaurants are sooo good. Delicious margaritas too.
fakejacki@reddit
It is the best Tex mex.
Ojeda’s on maple is also excellent for a much more casual experience.
Dawnzarelli@reddit
It smells so good in there. Definitely lively and family friendly.
TakingSorryUsername@reddit
Also the birthplace of the frozen margarita! Not at the new location, but same restaurant.
lithraviel@reddit
Slightly inaccurate. He invented the frozen margarita machine, but the frozen margarita isn't theirs to claim.
Top_Issue4421@reddit
Mi Dia from Scratch has great margaritas!

Everyone knows. Is that place ever not crowded?

JohnDoe_85@reddit
My kids that age just love Gloria's. It's easy and the food is good!
Designerfrog@reddit
Not Tex Mex.
JohnDoe_85@reddit
I suspect a 12-year-old who wants something "more Tex Mex" and possibly "enchiladas" will not draw a fine hair distinguishing "authentic Tex Mex as deigned by /u/Designerfrog's exacting standards" and Gloria's "Authentic Salvadoran & Tex-Mex Cuisine."
I also suspect you are more fun at parties than you are on reddit.
Moneyley@reddit
1st generation mex am... he's right though. You dont have to patronize him for his fairly accurate view. The post says Tex Mex. Not any other fusion. Its my opinion that El Ranchito has the best Mexican food but they label themselves as Tex Mex. Yet, by what is Mexican culture, tortillas are made in house for all to view. They have plates that are so uniquely Mexican (like cabrito), they have mariachi and all their staff speaks Spanish. Yet, they claim Tex-Mex. Thats just what it is. When I think of Tex-Mex I think of On the Border, El Fenix or something like that. Gloria's has had identity issues and I feel (the brand not the staff) is disingenuous. They've labeled themselves as "Latin cuisine" but try to appeal to Mexican patrons by selling fajitas which arent a staple of El Salvador. So yea, designerfrog is right "Not Tex Mex"
yourdailyorwell@reddit
“Since 1986, our family-owned and operated restaurants have been serving authentic Salvadoran and Tex-Mex cuisine across Texas.”
From their website.
It’s a good rec, their food is delicious.
Moneyley@reddit
Yes, Salvadoran food isnt Tex Mex. Its a marketing gimmick. Respectfully, few if any Salvadorean restaurants make it here. They piggyback off Tex Mex. Its like if a place from Sudan said "Tex Mex cuisine" but most of their plates were from Sudan.
by_lucky@reddit
Idk why you are getting downvoted over this. I went to Gloria’s once excited about Tex Mex, everything they served me was “good” but not what I wanted when I left my house. Sucked because it’s more than I needed to spend also. I never went back.
yourdailyorwell@reddit
Except it’s not a marketing gimmick, it’s like half the menu (or considerably more depending on one’s definition of Tex mex).
It’s been mentioned repeatedly in a thread for Tex Mex recommendations.
OP specifically mentioned enchiladas. They have plenty of options and, if their 3 sauce plate is any indicator, they’re all delicious.
Gloria’s is a solid rec.

Relative_Specific217@reddit
Redditors will hate but I will always recommend Joe T’s for a birthday. Best atmosphere, family friendly, food is simple but I think it’s delicious and definitely Tex Mex
Drekkful@reddit
Don't EVER let someone convince you to try Joe T Garcia's
It's a cool venue but the food is absolute ass. It's dry, under seasoned, and fucking expensive (cash only)
Sorry I know that's not what you asked, but it's a PSA
toodleroo@reddit
I disagree. I really like the food. The fajitas aren’t the conventional grilled meat but it’s very tasty. I like the nacho, and I LOVE the jalapeno relish. The portions are pretty generous.
Relative_Specific217@reddit
That freakin jalepeno relish mixed with the beautiful atmosphere does something good for my soul
J4browny@reddit
Mexican here. I’m with you on this one. Food is good and very fast, ambiance is good, prices is not bad for the portions. I do prefer the food at Esperanza’s around the corner.
toodleroo@reddit
Honestly never understood the hate for the food at Joe T's. Is it the best tex mex on the planet? No. But it's good, and of course the patio is fabulous.
Broad_Mushroom_8033@reddit
People don't like it because it's popular and well known. I think that's all it is.
playballer@reddit
Glad to hear but also this invalidates any Tex Mex reviews you give ever again. Seriously don’t give anyone advice please just say you’re not qualified
ttujr1972@reddit
I'm with you. I don't understand the "love" for Joe T Garcia's
GoldenFrog14@reddit
TCU alum here:
A lot of people associate it with fun nights out in college (the drinks were good and strong, at least back in the day). As a result, the food gets massively overrated (and the lack of variety has always annoyed me)
HondoGonzo@reddit
The margaritas will still knock your dick in the dirt.
No_Entertainment670@reddit
Your comment made me laugh hard.
GoldenFrog14@reddit
Glad Joseph is still holding it down
Drekkful@reddit
Thank you for the explanation! The marg was strong but it was also $12 for a small one, which is totally unreasonable considering it was a batch made cocktail out of a machine and not individually shaken by a bartender.
GoldenFrog14@reddit
Agree with every bit of that
Skunk_Gunk@reddit
It’s real just the awesome patio. The margs are pretty good too
3wtflyrod@reddit
I’m glad you said it. I gave the same opinion on another sub, they threatened to ban me. I do not understand the hype of this place.
Drekkful@reddit
Must have been r/ ft worth
They get uppity about their city. Every once in a while I check in with a comment like "ft worth is just a suburb of Dallas"
Organic-Class-8537@reddit
I’ve never understood this “Ft. Worth is the same as Dallas mentality. For 25 years we lived in a NYC suburb—15 min by train (station was a couple blocks from my home). We’re there certain things about the city we knew well because we were there all the time (for leisure, etc) and in my case all the time for work. Still, I’d have never presumed it was “just like” living in NYC. . That’s weird.
Mendozozoza@reddit
Joe ts is trash, but somehow Esperanza’s is pretty good.
Ok_Software2677@reddit
Sorry, but I think something is a little shady for a place that only takes cash. Went there once and just could NOT see what the rage was about.
playballer@reddit
The patio
Ok_Software2677@reddit
I won't disagree, but that's about the only thing.
Lightzephyrx@reddit
All cash to skirt taxes, obviously.
Ok_Software2677@reddit
Yep
playballer@reddit
The free big ass nacho is all I eat there now. I just ask for a full plate of them to myself. Margs and vibes are worth it on a nice patio weather day and those nachos are good with the jalapeño relish
kcipsirhc@reddit
💯 garbage. They were a staple back in the day, but fame went to their head.
dicklessanus@reddit
IN MY DAY there were only 2 entree choices. i’m sure more than margs were offered but pitchers were the way to go lol
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
Joe T's is not that bad. Other than the cash thing, the food is alright and the atmosphere is great. It's not the best tex-mex in DFW, but it's not that bad.
Adjective_Noun4377@reddit
You say it's not that bad, okay; it's not that good either.
berserk_zebra@reddit
You leave my grandmas comfort food out of this. Been going since a child. It’s hard to not go there.
Wizzmer@reddit
Maybe the 12yo wants margs on a patio?
GuairdeanBeatha@reddit
It was good in days gone by, but the quality has slipped away.
NewMexicoJoe@reddit
I had a damn good time at Joe T Garcias on my first trip to Fort Worth. Great weather sitting outside on the patio, and food was good enough for me.
Super-Committee-5094@reddit
Second that. So gross.
PodricksPhallus@reddit
Just get a pitcher of margs and enjoy the patio
Relevant_Ad1303@reddit
E Bar Tex-Mex on North Haskell and Munger is one of my husband and I’s favorite spots! Good margs too :)
ChicagoRay312@reddit
Ojeda’s on Maple Avenue. Great menu and venue. It’s large and nobody will be concerned about the volume of kids.
mabezard@reddit
Someone told me recently that Ojeda's is kindof the father of Esparza's in Grapevine. I might be wrong, but it was said the founder of Esparzas in the 80s started as a busboy at Ojeda's in the 70s.
Sguidroz@reddit
Best margarita swirls ever!
Adjective_Noun4377@reddit
I totally forgot about esparzas. I used to love that place. Is it still there?
mabezard@reddit
Oh yea definitely
Adjective_Noun4377@reddit
Yesyesyes! I was looking thru thru the thread for this. Ojedas will make certain she has a great birthday! Food is on point and they are very reasonably priced. Adults can enjoy adult beverages as well. They will even sing for her.
GuairdeanBeatha@reddit
I first went to Ojeda’s in, I believe, 1972. It was the original gas station location. In 1978 It was the first place I took my now wife out to eat. The food and service have never changed.
fakejacki@reddit
Just said this. We moved to the suburbs and for my husband’s birthday I always go get like 4 jars of their salsa.
Dizzy-Bat4776@reddit
I highly recommend Don Pepe’s off Arapaho and Hillcrest. Sits right on the shopping plaza’s park and playground with lots of shaded outdoor seating so you can watch the kids play
Sguidroz@reddit
Pro tip. Just get the tacos and nachos à la carte and drink plenty of margaritas!
No_Entertainment670@reddit
Downtown Oak Cliff has amazing Mexican restaurants. I can’t remember the names. I was the passenger in the car when my family and I went.
On a side note, I’m a Mexican food snob. My aunt who used to babysit me, always made homemade Mexican food. Her rice and beans are delicious. That’s why I say I’m a Mexican food snob.
UpYours3265@reddit
Gonzales on Jefferson Dallas
OhPossumMyPossum1@reddit
I don’t know if it was an off day or what. But I haaaaated Gonzales! It smelled like garbage inside and the salsa tasted of just raw onion. The tortilla was more like a pita bread than a tortilla, it tasted good but the consistency was weird. On the other hand, I loved El Ranchito.
liberal_texan@reddit
That's just down Jefferson from El Ranchito which was going to be my suggestion.
UpYours3265@reddit
El Ranchito is over priced in my opinion. They do not consider themselves tex mex Gonzales does.
liberal_texan@reddit
I don't know what you mean by "consider themselves tex mex", the menus of the two are very similar.
Also, picking a few random dishes:
Gonzales:
Chile Relleno - $16.95
Chicken Enchiladas - $14.96
Carne Guisada - $18.95
El Ranchito:
Chile Relleno - $15.95
Chicken Enchiladas - $16.95
Carne Guisada - $18.95
I'm not sure where you're coming from. They're about the same price and I think El Ranchito is slightly better.
UpYours3265@reddit

At Gonzalez Restaurant you will experience true Tex Mex traditions & culture. Visit us now and have a bite of our Award Wining 'Best in Texas' Flour Tortillas as you experience an authentic Tex Mex Restaurant in Dallas Texas.
liberal_texan@reddit
Which is it, Tex-Mex or "the most authentic Mexican food"? Those are not the same thing.
UpYours3265@reddit
So your issues is their wording on the website?
liberal_texan@reddit
No my issue is with your weird comparison.
riceu@reddit
Gonzales has better food, portions and prices.
El Ranchito has an unmistakeable atmosphere that is better suited for a fun dinner.
UpYours3265@reddit
You are right on everything but atmosphere. If you want a mariachi band blaring music in your ear while you are trying to have a nice dinner . Don't get me wrong I like mariachi but it's too much when the fn trumpet is in your ear because they come table side.
riceu@reddit
This is exactly what a 12 year old birthday dinner needs
UpYours3265@reddit
Interesting observation 🤔

Birria taquería y cortez!

La Atoron in east Dallas is really good. They make the tortillas from hand. I love the tacos and tortas from there.
Laz3rfac3@reddit
Best enchiladas I've had were from Senaidas in Rowlett
RedwallLover@reddit
El palote pandering. It's on Buckner Blvd near Scyene right. In Dallas, TX.
DobleWho@reddit
Apologies if this comes off as snarky, but there’s a notable difference between Mexican and Tex-Mex. Conflicting ask in the title and body.
boldjoy0050@reddit
For sure, and we have so many lousy Tex-Mex and Mexican places in DFW. My coworkers brought me to El Fenix a few weeks ago and that food was barely better than Chilis.
I moved here from Chicago and was expecting better Mexican food, but somehow the majority of taco places here are worse.
Maybe the difference is that Chicago has more 1st and 2nd generation Mexicans whereas Texas Mexicans have been here for longer, so the restaurants they run are more Americanized?
Laz3rfac3@reddit
You should go to Garland more
Designerfrog@reddit
Just go to Mariano’s and Mia Dia from Scratch.
MAN_UTD90@reddit
It depends where you go. South Irving is full of 1st gen Mexicans and there's a lot of decent to really good Mexican food there.

Mariano’s would be my FIRST choice. Uncle Julio’s would be SECOND. Both are kid friendly, both have great food, and I know the staff sings Happy Birthday at Mariano’s. BTW, the frozen margarita machine was invented by Mariano Martinez.

12 yr old miiight be aging out of the novelty of this, but…
Ponchos! It’s not fancy, it might even be a little run down, but if there are picky eaters the buffet gives lots of options, raising the flag for service is a hoot, and it’s perfectly fine greasy spoon TexMex.
If it’s a bit too rundown for your tastes though, Lupe Tortilla in Addison has great food (kids might love the queso fundido) and that cantina look without instead of a whitewashed “upscale” feel that you get from Gloria’s/Mi Dia (love’em, but they lose a bit of soul in the aesthetic department).
SilentSerel@reddit
My son is 14 and has loved Pancho's for years, mostly because of the AYCE aspect.

Mariano’s or Mi Cocina at Klyde Warren Park to let off some steam after eating. Worst experience in Dallas : Odelay and Enchilada.

Uncle Julios. Kids love the chocolate piñata dessert.
Randy-Popcorn_Price@reddit
I went to a from scratch location a couple of weeks ago and the waiter told me that the company is being sold.
webra1@reddit
Could have sworn it was sold many years ago. The menu used to be VERY different.
Randy-Popcorn_Price@reddit
I guess it's happening again. The from scratch menu was different from the time I was there before, which prompted the conversation about what was going on with the restaurant.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
I make better fajitas at my house. Can’t make a chocolate piñata though.
Personal_Might2405@reddit
Rafa’s has always been a go to.
Designerfrog@reddit
I really don’t like it. More for you.
Personal_Might2405@reddit
To each their own. If we’re talking straight Tex Mex, maybe the most competitive category in terms of sheer number of options you can try on any given corner in Texas - the list of 50+ years in business, family owned decision not to scale to multiple locations or franchise and made it through COVID - in Dallas that’s a short list.
Radixx@reddit
Mia’s
GrandRefrigerator263@reddit
I almost don’t want more people to know about Mia’s. But I’m from San Antonio, and it’s the only real TexMex place in Dallas I like.
GoldenFrog14@reddit
Moved from San Antonio about 5 years ago. That's all I needed to hear. Thanks!
AccomplishedGolfer2@reddit
Any Tex-Mex places you recommend in San Antonio around the Riverwalk area?
Twisted_lurker@reddit
Casa Rio is the original River walk restaurant in a great location and their menu hasn’t changed much. I’ve always been a fan of their salsa. Some people don’t care for it.
Acenar is pretty standard. It is a safe choice, you won’t go wrong.
If you’re open to strolling away from the river a bit, Mi Tierra and La Margarita in Market Square are a fun experience. Rosario’s in Southtown is also very nice.
GrandRefrigerator263@reddit
Acenar is touristy but really good Tex Mex. The patio is pretty dope and real date-y. It’s pricier than the spots further away from the Riverwalk but you’re paying for location.
Free unsolicited advice, there’s an Italian spot down there at the SAMA called Tre Tratoria that is sublime. It’s my favorite spot on the Riverwalk.
